The overall purpose of this project is to develop a cross-platform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) application mainly for iOS and Android devices. This application aims to guide healthcare workers in the different processes and expected medication during cardiac arrest, which can often be a fast-paced and stressful scenario. The application will need to provide time-based and previous action-based recommendations for following medication and steps. Each step taken as well as at what time it was performed will also need to be documented automatically through the usage of the application.  This application is implemented using the framework React Native. Facebook developed React Native in 2015 targeting mobile application development. The base structure of React Native is based on React, a JavaScript library released in 2013 used to build web interfaces. React Native allows creation of mobile applications that can run on iOS and Android devices with a single codebase.  This project resulted in a mobile application capable of running on both iOS and Android platforms. The application has enough functionality to be used in a simulation for the CPR procedure during a cardiac arrest rescue scenario.

Mobile applications can be developed using a variety of different techniques and technologies. One of the most recent of these techniques is the Progressive Web Application (PWA), a cross-platform solution that is built exclusively using common web technologies. The technique has great potential to become a major competitor to native applications but is currently held back by a few rather significant limitations. This project was initiated because of a significant lack of academic research on the topic of PWA, and a perceived poor level of knowledge in the industry about the technique. The goal of the project was to determine if PWA deserved broader utilization or if the current low level of adoption was justified. During the project, two surveys were conducted. The first survey asked mobile application developers from companies in different countries about things such as their knowledge of, experience with, and opinions of PWA. The second survey asked similar questions but was instead answered by lecturers in higher education in Sweden only. The results of this project show that the average level of knowledge of PWAis very low and that developers’ opinions of the technique are quite negative. The limitations of PWA were found to be few but crippling to its potential to achieve widespread adoption.

Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been in commercial use since the1980’s and over 8-12% of its current uses are in the agricultural sector, but only involving limited uses like surveying, mapping and imaging, which is expected to increase to 47% according to AUVSI with the association of Artificial Intelligence over the next decade. Our research is one such effort to help farmers utilize advanced sUAS technology coupled with Artificial Intelligence and give them meaningful results in a widely used and user friendly interface, like a mobile application. The vision for this application is to provide a completely automated experience to the farmer for a repetitive and periodic analysis of his/her crops where all the instruction needed from the farmer is a push of a button on a one time configured application and ultimately providing results in seconds. This would help the farmer scout their crops, assess yield potential, and determine if additional inputs are needed for increasing grain yield and profit per acre. For making this application we focused on user-friendliness by abstracting crop algorithms, minimized necessary user inputs, and automate the construction of flight paths. Due to internet connection not always being available at farm fields, processing was kept to on-board compute systems and the mobile device to give live results to farmers without reliance on cloud-based analytics. The application is configured to work with DJI Aircraft using OpenCv for video processing and mobile vision, GIS and GPS data for accurate mapping, locating device, sUAS on the mobile application, and FFMPEG for encoding and decoding compressed video data. An algorithm developed by Precision-Ag Lab at the K-State Agronomy Department was implemented into the sUAS application for providing real time yield estimations and nitrogen recommendation algorithm for winter wheat.

In Sweden there is a continuing effort to develop a more effective construction industry with a focus on environment, quality and control. When compared to the industrial sector it has been acknowledged that the construction industry has lagged behind the current environmental and quality requirements and standards. The construction industry has been developed and digitalized tremendously over the last few years; however some small businesses have not been able to follow.A couple of examples of this are the digital methods for work orders and registrations among craftsmen. In this study I will look at the possibilities of digitalization and the methods to produce work orders and registrations more effectively. This thesis aims to examine if it is possible to improve the control, quality and economical aspects of construction companies by using a mobile phone application.I have chosen to use theory concerning environment, quality, control and financial where I have studied the aspects which are influenced by a digital device in form of a mobile application and its functions. There is opposing consensus among the officials who are affected by the mobile phone application. It appears that the workload can be reduce clearly and the possibility to improve the control using the application. I can state that the mobile application must be simplified to get a total usage among the craftsmen.

This project is made for creating a stabil and useful mobile application developed in Java. The purpose of this project is to make the access and communication easier between the student and the student portal. The product of this project is the unofficial app of Mid Sweden University, called Mittuniversitetets Android-app, that in first hand is limited to Android-devices. By doing research, both by letting students answer a survey online on Mid Sweden University's student portal and by asking student physically at Mid Sweden University campus Sundsvall, the investigation tells which parts of the student portal students would like to have in the mobile application and it is according to those answers that the direction of the application has been developed. The product, which is the application, is considered complete when the students are able to for exempel reach their information and get the information presented in a good way. Three different suggestions for a solution is given and by comparing the benefits of those only one solution is chosen. The solution chosen is ”direct-connection as solution”. To be able to give the reader better basical and understandable knowledge some parts are explained in more detail in this report. The report also shows that the access to the student portal is more effective now that only 5 taps are required by using the Mid Sweden University application to get a students information instead of 24 taps by using the web-browser on the cellphone. All goals in this thesis is considered accomplished and screenshots shows this in the report. Finally there is also suggestions for some future works given in this report.

Image enhancement improves an image appearance by increasing dominance of some features or by decreasing ambiguity between different regions of the image. Image enhancement techniques have been widely used in many applications of image processing where the subjective quality of images is important for human interpretation. In many cases, the images have lack of clarity and have some effects on images due to fog, low light and other daylight effects exist. So, the images which have these scenarios should be enhanced and made clear to recognize the objects clearly. Histogram-based image enhancement technique is mainly based on equalizing the histogram of the image and increasing the dynamic range corresponding to the image. The Histogram equalization algorithm was performed and tested using different images facing the low light, fog images and colour contrast and succeeded in obtaining enhanced images. This technique is implemented by averaging the histogram values as the probability density function. Initially, we have worked with the MATLAB code on Histogram Equalization and made changes to implement an Application Program Interface i.e., API using Xamarin software. The mobile application developed using Xamarin software works efficiently and has less execution time when compared to the application developed in Android Studio. Debugging of the application is successfully done in both Android and IOS versions. The focus of this thesis is to develop a mobile application on Image enhancement using Xamarin on low light, foggy images.

To remain competitive and successful in today’s globalized market, companies need a strategy to ensure that they are constantly at the leading edge in terms of products and services. The implementation of a mobile application is one approach to fulfill this requirement. This report describes an overview of the topic, by introducing briefly today’s development tools for mobile application development and subsequently focusing on the Soundhailer application, as the application done by the author. The problem in focus is to find out whether a native or web-based application is preferred for an iOS application production strategy for a start-up company. Moreover, the report delivers an insight into a well-structured method that works good for setting up measuring points for a website, also Soundhailer’s, and the factual realization of a development tool for iOS development. This insight is based on a lot of help from a former student of the Royal Institute of Technology, who has had some previous experience within the area. To show prospective similarities and differences between theory and reality, the experiences are subsequently compared to the theoretical part. Finally, the results are critically discussed. Two versions of the application were developed, both a native version and a web-based version, and the results show that both native and web-based applications can be convenient solutions for companies to implement and use. The results also provide a foundation upon which others can build and better understand how an iOS application is used and developed.

People now live within an electronic sphere of heterogenous devices providing similar services. From now on they can freely choose the best interface corresponding to their needs, switching from a device to another while enjoying a same service. This freedom leverage new mobility issues that directly impact the user experience. The state of the art introduces two services types with specific properties : applicative services commonly known as local or remote applications and telecommunication services based on standardised infrastructures. The study of the mobility constraints and the existing approaches shows that current solutions in this domain are incomplete and cannot assure an end-to-end continuity : selection, transfer, adaptation, etc. We implemented continuity mechanisms in the ims and web environments for telecommunication and multimedia services in order to emphasize the lacks of the existing solutions and identify the basic features of a unified mobility management model. These works led to a more abstract vision of the service concept, required to define a generic continuity model adapted to the user’s heterogeneous environment. We introduced innovative concepts and original mobility mechanisms, which we implemented in a "distributed Service Manager". Finally, we evaluated this model with qualitative and quantitative tests on a prototype according to a transfer scenario of text-edition service in a heterogeneous environment. Results are very satisfying, they prove the feasibility of our solution and its adequacy with the temporal and contextual constraints

The breakthrough of mobile shopping applications is a recent phenomenon. The increasing use of smartphones in retail stores (i.e. more than 70% of consumers) has led retailers to develop these tools to help consumers make smarter purchases. However, similar to Self-service technologies (e.g. automatic cash registers), mobile applications raise many issues, particularly regarding the factors that create customer value. The objective of our research is therefore to measure the value of a mobile purchasing support application for the customer in the context of a retail store. It also involves determining the consequences on the relationship with the retail store. This work is based on the literature on the concept of value and on mobile purchasing assistance applications. Qualitative exploratory research in the form of focus groups highlights the benefits and costs associated with the use of mobile applications in the retail store. Various conditional elements that can moderate the link effects of these applications are also identified: type of retail store (food versus multimedia), type of application ("Pull" versus "Push") and level of personalization (personalized versus non-personalized). This leads us to the construction of a scale for measuring the value in use of an application and to the development of a conceptual model that incorporates the hybrid approach of value. This model aims to describe the creation of global value resulting from the use of a mobile purchasing assistance application and to identify the impact of this global value on loyalty. This model is tested using an experimental methodology for which fictive applications have been specially designed. Five successive quantitative studies are conducted on a total sample of more than 1000 students. Multigroup analysis are used to measure the moderating effects of conditional elements: The results show that the global value induced by the use of these mobile applications influences loyalty to the point of sale. Each of the conditional elements has moderating effects on the model links. The moderating effects of the "Push" application type combined with the high level of personalization achieve the best results with the creation of a significant global value impacting loyalty to the point of sale

Mobile applications provide services that can benefit various sectors of the society. It is imperative that the realization of mobile applications be well-planned and based on standards. The interplay of Extensible Markup Language (XML)-based technologies, software engineering principles, and "best practices" formalized as patterns provides such a systematic approach. This thesis formulates a rigorous classification of mobile application patterns into four categories: architecture, process, product, and usage. To express the patterns in a universal manner, an XML-based pattern notation, the Mobile Application Patterns Markup Language (MAPML), is introduced. Based on a requirements analysis and design description, the specification of MAPML is given. MAPML is equipped with a collection of tools that includes formal grammars for MAPML, and solutions for authoring, processing, and presenting MAPML documents on the Web. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the current state of work and directions for future improvement.

This thesis studies the relationship between media production and citizen practice in the mobile applications industry concerning sustainable development contents in France, Brazil, and - to a lesser degree - in the United States between 2009 and 2011. Within this framework, sustainable development was chosen as a basis for discussion as it illustrates the notion of the common good. We study the construction of technical innovation and digital content production. We highlight the interests of the relevant players - operators and stakeholders. The notion of the various interests involved is the central theme of our study. We focus on the role of professionals as specialized intermediaries, who ensure the interaction between the interests involved. Do we detect a civic involvement of these professionals torn between their technical and creative qualifications and societal responsibilities? This is the underlying theme of this thesis

Not bounded by time and place, and having now a wide range of capabilities, smartphones are all-in-one always connected devices - the favorite devices selected by users as the most effective, convenient and neces- sary communication tools. Current applications developed for smartphones have to face a growing demand in functionalities - from users, in data collecting and storage - from IoT device in vicinity, in computing resources - for data analysis and user profiling; while - at the same time - they have to fit into a compact and constrained design, limited energy savings, and a relatively resource-poor execution environment. Using resource- rich systems is the classic solution introduced in Mobile Cloud Computing to overcome these mobile device limitations by remotely executing all or part of applications to cloud environments. The technique is known as application offloading. Offloading to a cloud - implemented as geographically-distant data center - however introduces a great network latency that is not acceptable to smartphone users. Hence, massive offloading to a centralized architecture creates a bottleneck that prevents scalability required by the expanding market of IoT devices. Fog Computing has been introduced to bring back the storage and computation capabilities in the user vicinity or close to a needed location. Some architectures are emerging, but few algorithms exist to deal with the dynamic properties of these environments. In this thesis, we focus our interest on designing ACOMMA, an Ant-inspired Collaborative Offloading Middleware for Mobile Applications that allowing to dynamically offload application partitions - at the same time - to several remote clouds or to spontaneously-created local clouds including devices in the vicinity. The main contributions of this thesis are twofold. If many middlewares dealt with one or more of offloading challenges, few proposed an open architecture based on services which is easy to use for any mobile device without any special requirement. Among the main challenges are the issues of what and when to offload in a dynamically changing environment where mobile device profile, context, and server properties play a considerable role in effectiveness. To this end, we develop bio-inspired decision-making algorithms: a dynamic bi-objective decision-making process with learning, and a decision-making process in collaboration with other mobile devices in the vicinity. We define an offloading mechanism with a fine-grained method-level application partitioning on its call graph. We use ant colony algorithms to optimize bi-objectively the CPU consumption and the total execution time - including the network latency

This thesis investigates embedded databases and graphical interfaces for the MicroBaseJ project. The project aim is the development of an integrated database and GUI user interface for a typical 3G, or 2.5G, mobile phone with Java MIDP2 capability. This includes methods for data acquisition, mobile data and information communication, data management, and remote user interface. Support of phone delivered informatics will require integrated server and networking infrastructure research and development to support effective and timely delivery of data for incorporation in mobile device-based informatics applications. A key research and development (R&D) challenge is to support effective and timely delivery of data for incorporation in mobile device-based informatics applications. Another important aspect of the project is determining how to develop efficient graphics for the small mobile screen. The research investigates and analyses the architecture of a mobile monitoring system. The project developed a generic solution that can be implemented in a number of commercial sectors, such as horticulture, building management and pollution/water management. The developed concept is tested using data relevant to the horticultural area of application. The system also addresses the main issues related to mobile monitoring, including real-time response, data integrity, solution cost, graphical presentation, and persistent storage capabilities of modern mobile devices. Four embedded databases based on J2ME have been investigated. Two of the four have been evaluated and analysed. The Insert function, Sequence Search, and Random Search of Perst List and RMS (Record Management System) databases have been tested. The size of the processed data was limited to 20,000 records when using the wireless toolkit simulator, and 11,000 records when using a mobile phone. Perst Lite reflects good performance and has out-performed RMS in all tests. User interface software such as J2ME Polish for mobile phones has been investigated. Custom J2ME class for graphical interface is developed. This provides the graphical presentation of the data collected from the sensors; including temperature, wind speed, wind direction, moisture, and leaf wetness. The graphical interface, bar charts, and line charts with trace ball for collected data have been designed and implemented. The embedded database performance and project performance have been investigated and analysed. The performances of Perst Lite and RMS are evaluated in terms of the insert, sequence search, and random search functions based on simulation and real devices. The record numbers vary from 1,000 to 20,000. The project performance contains data receiving and storage, and data presentation and configuration. The performance of data storage and configuration can be negated due to the running mode and the response time. Thus, data presenting performance is the key focus in this project. This performance was divided into the categories of initial, data search, data selection, and charting. The initial performance includes the initialisation of the project parameters, and the reaching of the welcome interface. Data search performance refers to the retrieval of the specified data from the embedded database, measured on 48 data points, which only can be presented on the mobile screen from the retrieved data. These four performance types are measured in thousands of record numbers, varying from 1,000 to 18,000 record numbers, with the retrieved data range varying from 1 day to 30 days.

This master thesis investigates studies on fashion oriented people according to the "Outfit-Centric Accessories" concept. The outfit-centric accessories concept originated from recent research study by Juhlin and Zhang (2011) about mobile phone representation in fashion and Aesthetic of Interaction area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The term outfit-centric accessories originated from clothing and wearer. In this concept an outfit is playing a role as the centerpiece and a mobile phone is functioning as a sort of an accessory that can be added to an outfit. The main aim here is to explore design solution for matching the visual appearance of mobile device with different outfit of a person. The first phase of this thesis is based on a research conducted through a literature review on the Aesthetic Interaction and the Experience-Centered design approach. Literature study has been followed by studies the relation between the fashion and technology and the outfit-centric accessories concept precisely. The findings that are presented here are based on field studies on fashion oriented people who are interested in mobile phone design. Filed studies were conducted through gathering input entries from social networking services such as Facebook and Blogger, survey of questionnaire on outfit matching mechanism, and inquiring people around. The findings are described the outfit "Match Mechanism" and the "social activities around the outfit matching" in relation to the concept. These descriptions have led the project to the system design and development phase regarding the outfit-centric accessories concept. This phase resulted in the Android based mobile application named "Mobile Fashion". This application enables a user to match a mobile device with variety of clothing in the form of a background image, cover, or printable sticker (skin phone) and it allows a user to participate in social services by sharing the look with others. It is worth mentioning that "Mobile Fashion" application presented in Vinnova-nytt (June 2011, No.3, p15) and International Joint Conference on Ambient Intelligent (AmI'11 November, 16, 2011, Amsterdam) (see appendix 14 and 15).

This study evaluates the performance difference between hybrid and native mobile applica-tions when accessing the low level API. The purpose of this study is to find out the differ-ence in performance between the different methods for developing applications due to an increasing market for platform independent applications. Several benchmarks were created to measure the performance on the following criteria, execution time, memory allocation and storage space. The benchmarks were developed with a similar behaviour to match the functionality. The Titanium benchmarks were around 8.5 times larger in storage space and used 26-28% larger heap when it came to memory than the equivalent Android benchmarks. Android generally has a lower execution time than Titanium, however there are cases such as the math library where Titanium has a lower execution time.

User churn is a big problem for mobile applications, and in particular for healthapplications. Because mobile applications is such a new industry there is almost no research on churn in mobile applications, and none at all regarding health. The purpose of this research was to explain what dimensions a mobile health application company need to take into account when analyzing churn, and provide them with the tools to analyze churn in the future. The study was done in the form of a case study at the mobile health company Lifesum. An extensive literature study was conducted to create an initial framework for analyzing user churn in a health application. Interviews were conducted with both users and with Lifesum employees, with questions based on the initial framework. The results of the interviews were then used to augment the initial framework, to represent a more accurate image of user churn in a mobile health application. The results of the interviews were also used to create an overview of churn in the specific case study of the Lifesum app.The outcome of the study was a framework with many different dimensions, with intricate connections between them. The main dimensions influencing user churn are user satisfaction and switching barriers, and they are in turn influenced by other factors. The analysis of churn in the Lifesum application shows that churn is complex. Users have many different purposes for using the app, and even more reasons for why they stop using the application. A diagram mapping the different users is presented, with analysis regarding how the app needs to change to cater to the different user groups. A recommendation is also given for companies to investigate which type of users they want to cater to, based on both what they can do and what direction they want the application to go.

As the globalization process in our society grows the awareness about social responsibility of an organization increases. As the 21st century proceeds, the profit creation and an organizations work with sustainability will become increasingly inseparable leading to an intensified influence of Corporate Social Responsibility on stakeholder perception and social legitimacy affecting the economic outcome. The increased influence on stakeholders highlights the importance of communication. Since CSR is a relative question of what constitutes good business practice in the eye of the emerging societal demands that shapes tomorrow’s expectations new ways of communication need to be investigated. The mobility and the novel form of interaction make mobiles and mobile applications suitable for a wide range of different contexts and its suitability for communicating a company’s sustainability initiatives is investigated in this thesis. The empirical findings, based upon a case study on the telecommunication sector, a user survey, mobile technologies, and present sustainability solutions show that mobile applications can be an alternative to existing communication channels used today. However, there are some limitations that come with this medium. The limitations are the usage area of application, the low interest and awareness of CSR communication, the susceptibility among commonalty and what responsibility areas that are suitable to communicate through applications. However, with the limitations of mobile applications as a means to communicate are a few identified solutions and recommendations. The most prominent ones are related to application usage and the ways to adapt sustainability measures to the chosen technology. More specific gamification, visualization, manipulation are identified as vital aspects as well as a focus on application functionalities and providing sustainability as a value add-on.

Nowadays, mobile devices host many applications that are directly downloaded and installed from mobile application stores. The existence of such a large amount of apps for a myriad of purposes imposes a huge overhead on users, who are in charge of selecting, installing, and executing the appropriate apps, as well as deleting them when no longer needed. Moreover, these applications have mostly neglected to take into account the user’s context, as they propose static non-evolving scenarios. These applications serve for specific purposes and get deleted or forgotten most of the time after the first use. Furthermore, these apps fail to consider the, soon coming, connected world due to their monolithic architecture implemented to work on single devices. The proposed long-life application provides a new way to respond to the user’s needs dynamically and distributedly. It evolves at runtime by including/excluding business functionalities, updating the interaction mode, and migrating executions on multiple devices according to the user’s preferences. While he/she moves in his/her surroundings, the app detects the occurring events and builds contextually-described situations. So, this work aims to offer a new type of mobile application able to detect, formulate and understand the users’ context then react accordingly

Mobile web browsers of today have many of the same capabilities as their desktop counterparts. However, among the capabilities they lack is a way for web applications to interact with local devices. While today’s mobile phones commonly include GPS receivers and digital cameras, these local devices are currently not accessible from within the browser. The only means of utilizing these devices is by using standalone applications, but such applications lack the versatility of web browsers. If a mobile browser could utilize these local devices, then a mobile application could run within the browser, thus avoiding the need for specialized client software. This thesis suggests an approach for adding such capabilities to mobile browsers. In the proposed method, scripted access to local device functionality is facilitated by a local Java application. This application acts as a proxy server and allows the browser to call methods exposed by the local Java APIs. Both the benefits and some security concerns of this approach are examined. The benefits are further highlighted through two example web applications which utilize local devices.

Advancement in information technology has influenced various aspects of human lives. The penetration of information technology is likely to increase in future. Therefore, it is imperative that one should be aware of the factors, which encourage or discourage customers towards use of information technology and related products and services. With reference to e-commerce, organizations should analyze preferences of consumers in mobile-commerce environment and based on their findings, should adjust their product or service accordingly. The current research was based on the future research areas highlighted by Pantano and Priporas (2016) and covered the limitations of their study using a larger sample (150 customers) using the context of Pakistan. Shahid et al. (2015) Highlighted that mobile-phone industry of Pakistan is one of the vibrant industries of the world. The mobile-density of Pakistan is one of the highest of Asia. The findings of this research revealed different dimensions of independent variables. For perceived ease of use, these dimensions were understandable and easier for one to become skillful in using MBA. Likewise, for perceived usefulness, these dimensions were opportunity of processing more banking transactions and always available. Further to this, for innovativeness of user, these dimensions were being an unconventional person, prefer to experiment new things in life and prefer to obtain information about new products. Likewise, for design of application, these dimensions were using MBA is secure, using MBA has a pleasant experience on my mood, easier to navigate MBA, can customize MBA according to my needs and MBA gives me an opportunity to compare charges with competitors. Finally, for finance cost these dimensions were using MBA saves transportation cost, to and from stores and using MBA saves time of visiting Bank. In addition, this study helped in identification of relative importance of different independent variables on the dependent variables. It was revealed that perceived usefulness is the most influential factor which influences future usage intentions of the people whereas design of application is least influential factor. Likewise, finance cost and innovativeness of users are also important factors. It was suggested that MBA providers should focus on female segments as well, create awareness of MBA among older people, provide MBA in native language, and focus on promoting MBA using different dimensions such as perceived usefulness and cost efficiency. Moreover, this research contributed to previous research in various forms including identification of important dimensions of select variables as well as relative importance of perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, innovativeness, design of application and cost. Researcher identified various research limitations. Future researchers should overcome these limitations.

In today's era of technology, information can revolve the whole world within seconds via Internet. Devices such as smartphones, tablets and smart applications running on them enable users to access information anytime and anywhere over the air network. Ubiquitous nature of smartphones stimulates the growth of applications development, especially for small scale devices. Protection and security of sensitive mobile applications and their resources against threats are new emerging challenges for mobile application developers. Even competitive enterprise application development organizations lack comprehensive security services for small scale devices. Ultimately unpredictable threats become active anytime and can easily hamper the whole infrastructure within short time frame. In future enterprise applications, to protect entities and overall access of back-end secure infrastructure and services secure and easy to deploy strong authentication and authorization services will play a key role. Complexity of security risks in wireless networks is changing the ways of protection mechanisms for mobile applications. Achieving security balance with convenience becomes a challenging task for application developers. Due to complex blurred picture of an attack in an enterprise applications development, usually the developers don't pay attention against the mitigation of such threats at the initial phase of application development. Due to this, weaknesses appear in latter stages that make an application system vulnerable. Conventionally it is a common practice by application developers to rely on username/password authentication mechanism, and even more secure way that is considered to be a One Time Password (OTP) or complex passphrase schemes. These schemes have a number of limitations and drawbacks regarding today’s diverse wireless environments. In this research we used Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificate-based strong authentication scheme for small scale devices which is a significant step-up from simple username/password, OTP and location-based authentication schemes. Leading standards which we followed FIPS 201 Personal Identity Verification standard and FIPS 196 Strong Authentication Protocol scheme. Our solution is based on secure smart microSD card that can be used for providing high level of security for mobile enterprise applications. Also other considerable security services included confidentiality of exchanged transaction messages between applications and back-end application provider server, integrity of transaction messages, and non-repudiation services.

With the development of the computer networks, mainly the Internet, it became easier to develop applications where the execution is shared between a local computer, the Client, and one located on the other side of the network communication channel, the Server. The hardware advancements in the recent years made it possible to display 3D graphics (games, map navigation, virtual worlds) on mobile devices. However, executing these complex applications on the client terminal is not possible without reducing the quality of the displayed graphics or lowering its processing requirements. Different solutions have already been proposed in academic publications; however none of them satisfies all requirements. The objective of this thesis is to propose an alternative solution for a new client-server architecture where the connectedness of the mobile devices is fully exploited. Several main requirements are addressed: - Minimize the network traffic, - Reduce the required computational power on the terminal, and - Preserve the user experience compared with local execution. First a formal framework is designed that can effectively define and model distributed applications for 3D graphics. Then a model of new architecture is presented, that overcomes the disadvantages of the architectures presented in the state of the art. The core of the architecture is the MPEG-4 standard, which is used to transfer the data between the server and the client in a compressed manner. The last part of explores the design of architectures optimized for running on mobile devices. The design of the new client-server architecture is validated by implementing a game and running simulations.

The existing advanced web browsers in today’s mobile phones open up the door for mobile web applications. By using standard webtechnologies, a web page can be crafted to mimic the behavior of a normal application. The purpose of this master’s thesis has been to look at web application development for mobile phones in general and to implement a web-based Mobile TV client to determine whether it would be a viable alternative to existing clients based on other technologies. The advantages are the same as for any other web application: 1) the user avoids the hassle of installing an application and will always run the latest version, 2) developers benefit from the browser’s ability to render generic content, and 3) it is believed that the differences between browser implementations are less than in other environments in which an application would run, for example Java or operating system specificenvironments.

The use of mobile devices and mobile applications has soared in recent years. People are using mobile devices and applications for everyday tasks. Compared with desktop computers, smart phones have some limitations such as screen size, limited bandwidth and storage capacity that can be a big challenge. Another challenge is to ensure consistency across platforms and devices. In addition to this, a mobile application is short-lived if it is too advanced to be used. In this paper we present the user interface that is adopted in the Smart Media news recommendation project. We are building a mobile news application that retrieves news from all major Norwegian newspapers. The result of this study will be a news system where the main focus will be on the user interface part of the system and how this part can be created. The application can be either downloaded as an app or run on a browser on any mobile devices. It differs from other applications by offering users the ability to change the way news stories are presented. It also offers functionalities such as offline reading/browsing and sharing of news stories through social media. The application has been evaluated both empirically and heuristically during the development process.

Due to improved computing power, connectivity and interaction capability of mobile devices, their popularity and general acceptance in mass population has increased in recent years. Mobile applications are software systems running on mobile hand-held devices such as smart phones and tablets. Due to obvious differences in mobile applications, the evolution studies on them is of high importance. The primary objective is to study and compare the mobile applications evolution with the Lehman's laws of software evolution. Next is to identify and report how the software development team size influences mobile applications evolution. The study is conducted on 9 different open source mobile applications among which 5 were developed by single core developer and 4 were developed by multiple core developers. The selected projects' code repository is cloned into local copy and a number of tools are used on those repositories for extraction of relevant metrics from the artifacts. The Lehman laws are tested graphically, analytically and in some cases statistically. Six of the Lehman's laws are tested for validation in sample mobile applications. Among the six laws, I-Continuing Change is found supportive, III-Self Regulation and VI-Continuing Growth are found partial supportive in mobile applications. The II-Increasing complexity and V-Conservation of Familiarity are inconclusive. The IV-Conservation of Organizational Stability is not supportive in our sample mobile applications. Moreover, mobile applications are developed by a single or a few developers. Small team mobile projects have less time between releases compared to large team projects. The growth pattern of mobile applications is different than that predicted by Lehman laws.

Robots are sophisticated machines which are specially designed to have the capabilities to handle operations, on behalf of human, in many different scenarios. In the past decades, the design of robot systems has been evolving and there are increasing numbers of possible applications of robot. Some systems can even be able to overcome the individual limitations and handle complex problems by combining the strengths of multiple robots. To reduce the risk of human life, robots are now being put into missions under extremely dangerous or hazardous environment where human intervention is not tolerable , such as search-and-rescue missions inside damaged buildings after natural disasters and cleaning up of radioactive materials in nuclear accidence. Even though robots are dispensable, if they are damaged, disabled or trapped, the mission would not be accomplished. Therefore, the longevity of a robot system is always a challenge for robotic operations in such difficult environments. To tackle this challenge, many studies focus on improving the design of individual robot, minimizing the chance of robot failure; or the way that how functioning robots may share the job of the failed robots. The way that how other robots can help failed robots recover, however, has yet to be widely discussed. This thesis studies the feasibility of having multi-robot system with different automatic cooperative recovery abilities on top of its primary functions. A novel cooperative recovery framework is proposed for generic control among system primary functions and recovery behaviours. A number of experiments have been done to study the influence of cooperative recovery on a multi-robot system and how it can affect the system in terms of system performance, sustainability and overhead. An Immunity-based cooperative recovery model has also been created to overcome the drawback introduced by cooperative recovery, finding a balance between the two system objective among system productivity and longevity. Two modified versions of cooperative recovery model are also included in this study to further maximize the system potential.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 95-105).
There exist several challenges in supporting mobile applications. For example, creating a separate target application for each device type, leaving developers with a huge maintenance chore. Most desktop applications run on largely homogenous hardware so instead of writing the same code over and over again, developers only need to write modules to implement a particular need. This is because even though there are differences in PC hardware configurations, the same desktop application will work fine on any hardware as the operating system provides an abstract layer. This is the way mobile applications are expected to work. However, this has been divided into dozens of ill-assorted versions. Java mobile applications developers spend more time rewriting code to run on different versions of mobile devices more than they do actually creating application in the first place. This is an intolerable burden for small mobile developers, and it stifles mobile software innovation overall. Mobile devices differ in a variety of attributes, such as screen size, colour depth and the optional hardware devices they support such as cameras, GPS etc. The differences often require special code or project settings for successful deployment for each device a developer is targeting but this creates a huge logistical overhead. One potential solution that is shipped with NetBeans IDE is to add a new configuration for each device, modify the project properties, add some pre-processing code, then build and deploy the application. In most cases, one configuration for each distribution of the Java Archive (JAR) one plans to build for the project is created. For example, if a developer is planning to support three· different screen sizes using two sets of vendor specific APIs, one needs to create six configurations. This reduces the performance of the application drastically and increases the size at the same time. This is not acceptable for mobile devices where memory size and processor performance are limited. The goal of this research work is to support mobile application development through a Java IDE (the NetBeans IDE in this case). Therefore, our approach will be to modify the NetBeans IDE to better address the difficulty that was mentioned above - namely targeting applications for different platforms. Our solution is to integrate another type of a preprocessor into the NetBeans IDE that will help alleviate the problems of the existing tool. Our approach is to directly implement this inside the NetBeans IDE to further support mobile application development with the NetBeans IDE.

US asthma prevalence increased by five million in the last decade and health care spending for the disease increased from $53 billion to $56 billion. Children are more likely than adults to have an asthma attack and its estimated that 1-in-10 youth has asthma. Despite initiatives to promote adherence to practice guidelines, childhood asthma emergency room) visits, and hospitalizations remain steady while the number of asthma deaths have increased over a 17-year period. Preliminary studies find the majority of adolescents prefer smartphones as a means of education and guidance. A modified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) survey was comprised of 15 statements that explored providers' acceptance of smartphone applications (apps) as an adjunct strategy for management of asthma among adolescents in the outpatient setting. Current insight in adolescent asthma demonstrates multifaceted disparities in care stemming from biological and developmental transitions unique to adolescents. The quantitative, descriptive design of the project assessed two factors integral to the TAM related to provider acceptance and perception: 1) Perceived use (PU), and 2) Perceived ease of use (PEU). The survey sample consisted of 18 providers. Overwhelmingly, the majority of providers surveyed favored use of a smartphone app for adolescent asthma and believed apps had the potential to improve the quality of adolescent asthma management. Most participants agreed; smartphone apps might help accomplish benchmarks for adolescent asthma management. Numerous studies demonstrate adolescents’ preference for technological interventions for self-management of their asthma symptoms. The survey results reinforce the willingness of providers to accept asthma smartphone apps as a potential adjunct management strategy for adolescent asthma. Additional studies involving providers are required to further explore provider attitudes of acceptance and rejection relating to smartphone apps for chronic health conditions.

The growing popularity of smartphones in recent years has led to an increase in mobile application development and use. However, a large number of mobile applications are only used once before being removed. For companies and organizations to spend time and money on application development only to achieve low user retention rates is unsustainable. During their first interaction with a mobile application it is crucial that users find functionality and value quickly to avoid discontinuation of use. User onboarding is often implemented in mobile applications to aid in first time interaction, making onboarding processes subject of investigation for effect on user attitude towards continued use of mobile applications. The study examined mobile onboarding processes and their effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications as well as the difference between onboarding processes effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications. The study was conducted within-subjects through a survey consisting of interaction with two prototypes with different onboarding processes and a questionnaire based on the technology acceptance model in order to investigate the variables of interest. The results of the survey were analyzed to measure the effects of the onboarding processes on the factors of the technology acceptance model and to investigate the differences between the onboarding processes. The results showed that user onboarding has a positive influence on perceived usefulness, attitude towards use and intention to use. There was no significant difference between the different types of onboarding patterns effect on attitude towards continued use. The positive effects on attitude and intention to use confirmed that implementing onboarding processes in mobile applications could be beneficial for value proposition and user retention. The perceived usefulness proved to be the determining factor on attitude and intention to use.

Finding a suitable parking space in busy cities is a time consuming and challenging task. During the searching process, drivers become frustrated and distracted. Motor vehicle drivers might not initially find a free spot, and will leave the area by making a loop to find another spot close to their destination. As a result, there is increased congestion on the road, sometimes causing accidents, and wasting valuable time. To address this problem, we believe that a parking reservation system is necessary and will help reduce the high volume of congestion that might otherwise lead to accidents and have many other environmental and health impacts. The objective of our research is to propose a mobile-based reservation system. The process of finding a free parking space shall be made easy and fast; customers will only be a few taps away from guaranteed and paid parking, based on their preferences. The model presented considers all nearby parking service providers’ ability to satisfy customers’ requirements and will reserve the best parking for the user.

Smart mobile devices are becoming increasingly essential daily companions. Applications (apps) are the interface through which the consumer can leverage unique capabilities of smart mobile devices to interact with people, other devices and firms via the supporting mobile ecosystem. Smart mobile devices and apps are influencing how competition is defined and changing how firms do business by improving internal processes and increasing flexibility and convenience for customers. Mobile apps and devices enable users to move from a portable and mobile communication and computing environment to that of a ubiquitous communication and computing environment [u-space]. Discussion in terms of ‘mobile marketing’ is therefore too limiting, our understanding should be ‘ubiquitous marketing’. Six papers explore ubiquitous marketing further. The retail sector provides a contextual setting for paper one and finds that mobile marketing increases value for retailers and consumers. Integration of all retailer / consumer interfaces with mobile marketing to maximise exposure and connectivity between both parties is recommended. Paper two investigates the sources for mobile app ideas in companies and finds that apps developed externally or within the firm with some outside help, were perceived to be more effective. Apps that leverage the mobile devices unique features is central to the methodology proposed for developing an app in paper three. The next three papers examine the impact that mobile apps and devices have on business activities and customer relationships. Paper four finds increased operational efficiency in a Dental  Practice, while paper five identified the opportunity for increased firm-customer interaction in a medical context. Paper six determines that rather than five dimensions of SERVQUAL, financial service quality of apps consists of three dimensions: Reliability, personal and visibles; and that service success can be derived from providing less service. This thesis contributes to a fuller understanding of U-commerce theory. It advances understanding in how apps are making significant changes in how information technology is managed and controlled from an organisational perspective, and how these technology advances can influence consumer interaction.

As the number and diversity of applications available to mobile users increases, there is an increasing need for developers, network service providers, and users to understand how users perceive the network performance of these applications. MySpeedTest is a measurement tool that actively probes the network to determine not only TCP throughput and round trip time, but also the proximity to popular content providers, IP packet delay variation, and loss. It also records other metadata that could affect user experience, such as signal strength, service provider, connection type, battery state, device type, manufacturer, time of day, and location. The tool also takes passive measurements of the applications installed on the device and the network usage of these applications. My SpeedTest is available on the Google Play Store and currently has 1300+ active users. This thesis presents the design and implementation of MySpeedTest as well as effect of metrics like latency and IP packet delay variation on performance.

Purpose ReadNPlay for a Bright Future develops a variety of projects aimed at promoting healthy living in families with young children in Appalachian Tennessee. The purposes of this research are to collect parents’ and caregivers’ perspectives on healthy eating for the purpose of designing a new book in the ReadNPlay children's book series to be entitled A Farmers Market Adventure and to collect the preferences of parents and guardians related to website and mobile application (app) usage to help shape the development of a new ReadNPlay My Baby Book app. Methods Anonymous clipboard surveys were administered to attendees of regional community events during July of 2014. Survey items asked parents about healthy eating in the context of their families and the role of parenting websites and mobile apps in their families. The results from these surveys were summarized using Excel. A total of 100 surveys were collected. Results It was found that when parents were asked to identify barriers to healthy eating, the most common responses were picky eaters in the household (30%) followed by lack of time (22%). When asked to identify things that have helped parents to encourage healthy eating in their families, the three most common responses were good recipes (20%), good role models (16%), and farmers markets (16%). Twenty-eight percent of parents surveyed do not use websites or apps for parenting, while those who do use parenting websites or apps identified advice from experts (20%) and advice from other parents (18%) to be the two features most commonly desired in such a resource. When asked what they do not like about website and app usage, 20% of parents indicated that these tools are “too complicated.” However, when parents are told that our group of pediatricians was developing a free mobile application for families designed to help them keep track of their baby’s growth, development, and eating habits, 75% of parents said such an app would be very helpful to them (25% said a little helpful). Conclusion These results will inform a new ReadNPlay children's book themed around healthy eating behaviors, overcoming pickiness, and shopping with families at farmers markets and a new ReadNPlay mobile app for families to use in conjunction with infant-toddler well child visits.

In developed countries, the business environment is highly saturated, with large numbers of banks, and mobile network operators. As a result, customers have a range of options in choosing preferential services providers. In Africa, most countries have dissimilar business environments; however, some countries have paved new frontiers in enabling access to financial services mainly through mobile banking services. In South Africa, a different situation prevails even though in certain instances the business environment is more advanced than other African countries. Over the past five years, South Africa reported upward trends in real income for LSM1-5 (living standard measure), and the number of mobile subscribers per household.
