Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been in commercial use since the1980’s and over 8-12% of its current uses are in the agricultural sector, but only involving limited uses like surveying, mapping and imaging, which is expected to increase to 47% according to AUVSI with the association of Artificial Intelligence over the next decade. Our research is one such effort to help farmers utilize advanced sUAS technology coupled with Artificial Intelligence and give them meaningful results in a widely used and user friendly interface, like a mobile application. The vision for this application is to provide a completely automated experience to the farmer for a repetitive and periodic analysis of his/her crops where all the instruction needed from the farmer is a push of a button on a one time configured application and ultimately providing results in seconds. This would help the farmer scout their crops, assess yield potential, and determine if additional inputs are needed for increasing grain yield and profit per acre. For making this application we focused on user-friendliness by abstracting crop algorithms, minimized necessary user inputs, and automate the construction of flight paths. Due to internet connection not always being available at farm fields, processing was kept to on-board compute systems and the mobile device to give live results to farmers without reliance on cloud-based analytics. The application is configured to work with DJI Aircraft using OpenCv for video processing and mobile vision, GIS and GPS data for accurate mapping, locating device, sUAS on the mobile application, and FFMPEG for encoding and decoding compressed video data. An algorithm developed by Precision-Ag Lab at the K-State Agronomy Department was implemented into the sUAS application for providing real time yield estimations and nitrogen recommendation algorithm for winter wheat.

In Sweden there is a continuing effort to develop a more effective construction industry with a focus on environment, quality and control. When compared to the industrial sector it has been acknowledged that the construction industry has lagged behind the current environmental and quality requirements and standards. The construction industry has been developed and digitalized tremendously over the last few years; however some small businesses have not been able to follow.A couple of examples of this are the digital methods for work orders and registrations among craftsmen. In this study I will look at the possibilities of digitalization and the methods to produce work orders and registrations more effectively. This thesis aims to examine if it is possible to improve the control, quality and economical aspects of construction companies by using a mobile phone application.I have chosen to use theory concerning environment, quality, control and financial where I have studied the aspects which are influenced by a digital device in form of a mobile application and its functions. There is opposing consensus among the officials who are affected by the mobile phone application. It appears that the workload can be reduce clearly and the possibility to improve the control using the application. I can state that the mobile application must be simplified to get a total usage among the craftsmen.

This project is made for creating a stabil and useful mobile application developed in Java. The purpose of this project is to make the access and communication easier between the student and the student portal. The product of this project is the unofficial app of Mid Sweden University, called Mittuniversitetets Android-app, that in first hand is limited to Android-devices. By doing research, both by letting students answer a survey online on Mid Sweden University's student portal and by asking student physically at Mid Sweden University campus Sundsvall, the investigation tells which parts of the student portal students would like to have in the mobile application and it is according to those answers that the direction of the application has been developed. The product, which is the application, is considered complete when the students are able to for exempel reach their information and get the information presented in a good way. Three different suggestions for a solution is given and by comparing the benefits of those only one solution is chosen. The solution chosen is ”direct-connection as solution”. To be able to give the reader better basical and understandable knowledge some parts are explained in more detail in this report. The report also shows that the access to the student portal is more effective now that only 5 taps are required by using the Mid Sweden University application to get a students information instead of 24 taps by using the web-browser on the cellphone. All goals in this thesis is considered accomplished and screenshots shows this in the report. Finally there is also suggestions for some future works given in this report.

People now live within an electronic sphere of heterogenous devices providing similar services. From now on they can freely choose the best interface corresponding to their needs, switching from a device to another while enjoying a same service. This freedom leverage new mobility issues that directly impact the user experience. The state of the art introduces two services types with specific properties : applicative services commonly known as local or remote applications and telecommunication services based on standardised infrastructures. The study of the mobility constraints and the existing approaches shows that current solutions in this domain are incomplete and cannot assure an end-to-end continuity : selection, transfer, adaptation, etc. We implemented continuity mechanisms in the ims and web environments for telecommunication and multimedia services in order to emphasize the lacks of the existing solutions and identify the basic features of a unified mobility management model. These works led to a more abstract vision of the service concept, required to define a generic continuity model adapted to the user’s heterogeneous environment. We introduced innovative concepts and original mobility mechanisms, which we implemented in a "distributed Service Manager". Finally, we evaluated this model with qualitative and quantitative tests on a prototype according to a transfer scenario of text-edition service in a heterogeneous environment. Results are very satisfying, they prove the feasibility of our solution and its adequacy with the temporal and contextual constraints

The breakthrough of mobile shopping applications is a recent phenomenon. The increasing use of smartphones in retail stores (i.e. more than 70% of consumers) has led retailers to develop these tools to help consumers make smarter purchases. However, similar to Self-service technologies (e.g. automatic cash registers), mobile applications raise many issues, particularly regarding the factors that create customer value. The objective of our research is therefore to measure the value of a mobile purchasing support application for the customer in the context of a retail store. It also involves determining the consequences on the relationship with the retail store. This work is based on the literature on the concept of value and on mobile purchasing assistance applications. Qualitative exploratory research in the form of focus groups highlights the benefits and costs associated with the use of mobile applications in the retail store. Various conditional elements that can moderate the link effects of these applications are also identified: type of retail store (food versus multimedia), type of application ("Pull" versus "Push") and level of personalization (personalized versus non-personalized). This leads us to the construction of a scale for measuring the value in use of an application and to the development of a conceptual model that incorporates the hybrid approach of value. This model aims to describe the creation of global value resulting from the use of a mobile purchasing assistance application and to identify the impact of this global value on loyalty. This model is tested using an experimental methodology for which fictive applications have been specially designed. Five successive quantitative studies are conducted on a total sample of more than 1000 students. Multigroup analysis are used to measure the moderating effects of conditional elements: The results show that the global value induced by the use of these mobile applications influences loyalty to the point of sale. Each of the conditional elements has moderating effects on the model links. The moderating effects of the "Push" application type combined with the high level of personalization achieve the best results with the creation of a significant global value impacting loyalty to the point of sale

This thesis studies the relationship between media production and citizen practice in the mobile applications industry concerning sustainable development contents in France, Brazil, and - to a lesser degree - in the United States between 2009 and 2011. Within this framework, sustainable development was chosen as a basis for discussion as it illustrates the notion of the common good. We study the construction of technical innovation and digital content production. We highlight the interests of the relevant players - operators and stakeholders. The notion of the various interests involved is the central theme of our study. We focus on the role of professionals as specialized intermediaries, who ensure the interaction between the interests involved. Do we detect a civic involvement of these professionals torn between their technical and creative qualifications and societal responsibilities? This is the underlying theme of this thesis

Not bounded by time and place, and having now a wide range of capabilities, smartphones are all-in-one always connected devices - the favorite devices selected by users as the most effective, convenient and neces- sary communication tools. Current applications developed for smartphones have to face a growing demand in functionalities - from users, in data collecting and storage - from IoT device in vicinity, in computing resources - for data analysis and user profiling; while - at the same time - they have to fit into a compact and constrained design, limited energy savings, and a relatively resource-poor execution environment. Using resource- rich systems is the classic solution introduced in Mobile Cloud Computing to overcome these mobile device limitations by remotely executing all or part of applications to cloud environments. The technique is known as application offloading. Offloading to a cloud - implemented as geographically-distant data center - however introduces a great network latency that is not acceptable to smartphone users. Hence, massive offloading to a centralized architecture creates a bottleneck that prevents scalability required by the expanding market of IoT devices. Fog Computing has been introduced to bring back the storage and computation capabilities in the user vicinity or close to a needed location. Some architectures are emerging, but few algorithms exist to deal with the dynamic properties of these environments. In this thesis, we focus our interest on designing ACOMMA, an Ant-inspired Collaborative Offloading Middleware for Mobile Applications that allowing to dynamically offload application partitions - at the same time - to several remote clouds or to spontaneously-created local clouds including devices in the vicinity. The main contributions of this thesis are twofold. If many middlewares dealt with one or more of offloading challenges, few proposed an open architecture based on services which is easy to use for any mobile device without any special requirement. Among the main challenges are the issues of what and when to offload in a dynamically changing environment where mobile device profile, context, and server properties play a considerable role in effectiveness. To this end, we develop bio-inspired decision-making algorithms: a dynamic bi-objective decision-making process with learning, and a decision-making process in collaboration with other mobile devices in the vicinity. We define an offloading mechanism with a fine-grained method-level application partitioning on its call graph. We use ant colony algorithms to optimize bi-objectively the CPU consumption and the total execution time - including the network latency

User churn is a big problem for mobile applications, and in particular for healthapplications. Because mobile applications is such a new industry there is almost no research on churn in mobile applications, and none at all regarding health. The purpose of this research was to explain what dimensions a mobile health application company need to take into account when analyzing churn, and provide them with the tools to analyze churn in the future. The study was done in the form of a case study at the mobile health company Lifesum. An extensive literature study was conducted to create an initial framework for analyzing user churn in a health application. Interviews were conducted with both users and with Lifesum employees, with questions based on the initial framework. The results of the interviews were then used to augment the initial framework, to represent a more accurate image of user churn in a mobile health application. The results of the interviews were also used to create an overview of churn in the specific case study of the Lifesum app.The outcome of the study was a framework with many different dimensions, with intricate connections between them. The main dimensions influencing user churn are user satisfaction and switching barriers, and they are in turn influenced by other factors. The analysis of churn in the Lifesum application shows that churn is complex. Users have many different purposes for using the app, and even more reasons for why they stop using the application. A diagram mapping the different users is presented, with analysis regarding how the app needs to change to cater to the different user groups. A recommendation is also given for companies to investigate which type of users they want to cater to, based on both what they can do and what direction they want the application to go.

Nowadays, mobile devices host many applications that are directly downloaded and installed from mobile application stores. The existence of such a large amount of apps for a myriad of purposes imposes a huge overhead on users, who are in charge of selecting, installing, and executing the appropriate apps, as well as deleting them when no longer needed. Moreover, these applications have mostly neglected to take into account the user’s context, as they propose static non-evolving scenarios. These applications serve for specific purposes and get deleted or forgotten most of the time after the first use. Furthermore, these apps fail to consider the, soon coming, connected world due to their monolithic architecture implemented to work on single devices. The proposed long-life application provides a new way to respond to the user’s needs dynamically and distributedly. It evolves at runtime by including/excluding business functionalities, updating the interaction mode, and migrating executions on multiple devices according to the user’s preferences. While he/she moves in his/her surroundings, the app detects the occurring events and builds contextually-described situations. So, this work aims to offer a new type of mobile application able to detect, formulate and understand the users’ context then react accordingly

Ogunleye, Olalekan Samuel. "Supporting mobile developers through a Java IDE." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/16643.
There exist several challenges in supporting mobile applications. For example, creating a separate target application for each device type, leaving developers with a huge maintenance chore. Most desktop applications run on largely homogenous hardware so instead of writing the same code over and over again, developers only need to write modules to implement a particular need. This is because even though there are differences in PC hardware configurations, the same desktop application will work fine on any hardware as the operating system provides an abstract layer. This is the way mobile applications are expected to work. However, this has been divided into dozens of ill-assorted versions. Java mobile applications developers spend more time rewriting code to run on different versions of mobile devices more than they do actually creating application in the first place. This is an intolerable burden for small mobile developers, and it stifles mobile software innovation overall. Mobile devices differ in a variety of attributes, such as screen size, colour depth and the optional hardware devices they support such as cameras, GPS etc. The differences often require special code or project settings for successful deployment for each device a developer is targeting but this creates a huge logistical overhead. One potential solution that is shipped with NetBeans IDE is to add a new configuration for each device, modify the project properties, add some pre-processing code, then build and deploy the application. In most cases, one configuration for each distribution of the Java Archive (JAR) one plans to build for the project is created. For example, if a developer is planning to support three· different screen sizes using two sets of vendor specific APIs, one needs to create six configurations. This reduces the performance of the application drastically and increases the size at the same time. This is not acceptable for mobile devices where memory size and processor performance are limited. The goal of this research work is to support mobile application development through a Java IDE (the NetBeans IDE in this case). Therefore, our approach will be to modify the NetBeans IDE to better address the difficulty that was mentioned above - namely targeting applications for different platforms. Our solution is to integrate another type of a preprocessor into the NetBeans IDE that will help alleviate the problems of the existing tool. Our approach is to directly implement this inside the NetBeans IDE to further support mobile application development with the NetBeans IDE.
