Each exhibit is located in a space of authenticity. Its localization depends on the operations applied since the original sampling in the nature until the presentation to the public. Two axes define the space of authenticity: naturality and realism of the object. The object, partially denatured, sometimes artificialized, is nevertheless invested a function of mediation for the visitors. This work approaches preliminary questionings as well as constraints and advantages of the artificial. It shows that the artificial cannot be used without precaution. Moreover, even if artificialisation may add difficulties to the mediation purpose, the formidable potential of the artificial artefacts should not be denied. This study is useful for designers who wish to give a "true" place to the "false" in their exhibitions. It permits to help them to make the good choice in what concern the adequate artefact in harmony with the mediation purpose of the exhibition

This PhD thesis is related to the field of Science Didactics (Science Education) and aims to enrich the question of teaching and learning content in the context of primary school visits to science museums. Indeed, School and Museum are different institutions, so the moment of visit is a real issue regarding content. By reconstructing the school visit as a didactic situation characterized by specific content and by considering scientific literacy as involving diverse content (content knowledge, practical knowledge, values, attitudes…) with social uses and multiple references; it is as well the disciplinary learning of students as the training of visitors that is examined. The miscellaneous data – online educational documentation from French science museums, open questionnaires intended for primary school teachers and museum guides, observation of six ordinary school visits – enable to concentrate on the content of the school visit in the space of recommendations, the space of representations and the space of practices. Content, considered as a speech, is then reconstructed on the basis of the saying and doing of the didactic subjects in context. Finally, an incursion through another theoretical framework (that of the joint action theory in didactics) allows a general thinking on the nature of content, on its apprehension in contrasted didactic approaches and on the specificities of these approaches when it comes to study teaching and learning situations outside the classroom.Ultimately, this work shows how the content of school visits is articulated between scientific awareness and familiarization with the museum and its specificness. However, the analysis shows a persistence of the schoolarization of science exhibitions and museum experience. The disciplinary content in science is central when the content of visitors’ training is secondary

This doctoral dissertation deals with the visitor's involvement depth through his trajectory in a scientific or technical museum exhibition. A synthesis about the visit experience and a feature of exhibitions analyzed are offered in the first part: exhibitions with a stage immersion. A map of the latter is drawn according to representative styles and integration techniques the visitors will be subject to. The second part concerns investigation processes and more particularly the use of the open investigation in relation with four immersion exhibitions sustained. The ultimate of those gathers three features derived from the immersion experience - the body object, a destabilization phase and a revelation experience-. It then offers a categorization which reveals the involvement outcome through visitors' accounts. This categorization work results in the presentation of five visits configurations according to what is called the "immersion-distanciation"

Historically, science museums and science centers have emerged as scientific and cultural institutions that detain scholarly knowledge, which confers them a certain authority. Currently, however, socio-scientific issues and new kinds of relationships between science and society put to challenge the modes of communication of these institutions. Then, how do these institutions deal with such issues? Do their staff members take a stand on these issues? In order to address these questions, this thesis examines the example of climate change. Two theoretical frameworks are mobilized: science communication approaches inspired by STS (Science and Technology Studies) which question the deficit model and the theory of arenas to study public problems. Four science museums and science centers are studied: Science Animation in Toulouse, Cap Science in Bordeaux, La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris and the Science Museum in London. At least in France until 2009, climate change has been has been built on a consensus in the scientific, political and media arenas. Indeed, different actors converge around the same definition of the problem. The science museums and centers studied adopt a similar definition: scientific consensus as found in the conclusions of the IPCC, depolitisation of the problem, warning and call for action but no strong focus on the individual dimensions of the issue. The thesis identifies four models of communication: a mode of rupture, an informative mode, a reflexive and critical mode, and a solving. The professionals met during the study all take different positions. Nevertheless, most of them find it important to represent validated knowledge in an impartial way and refuse interventionist approaches. However, some elements of the displays studied revealed such an approach. A discourse concerned with alerts and calls for action was also at play. This contradiction might be a sign of the weight of the dominant definition of the problem of climate change, instituted as a cause without opponent. More generally, it could be explained by the importance of sustainable development as a new social and political norm

This work consists of a phenomenology study of the language of the scientific and technical museums, language which is represented by the aesthetic experiment. The essence of the phenomenology praxis proposed by Natalie Depraz, Francisco J Varela and Pierre Vermersch, like methodological application in our thesis, makes it possible to define the field in which the aesthetic experiment and art in the museums scientist and technical are spread. From this field, that enables us to apprehend what concerns the diffusion and the scientific popularization by the means of what the scientific and technical museums bring to renew the aesthetic experiment. The question of the awakening, suggested by the phenomenology praxis, emerges as the interviewed subjects take part in our experiment of research by revealing their own experiments of life and the experiments of museums in the scientific and technical museums. It is what comes out of what we have experienced, through our own acts of conscience and through the comprehension of what is given to us. We can thus consider the fiels of aesthetic and art in the scientific and technical museums. The exposures are revealed to us by the originators, the project leaders, the police chiefs and the perceived visitors. Our descriptions made it possible to show and affirm the concrete possibility, its practical realization in the descriptive form constitute the necessary starting point which makes it possible to outline an analysis of what is already object of philosophy. That is aesthetic and the way in which the work of art are present in these museums

The museological relations developed between France and North America have been explored by researchers in museology but these have hardly exploited the wealth of information contained in the French collections of North American objects. The history of the making of the Fayolle Collection, which gave birth to the Cabinet of Sérent at Versailles has been studied over a period starting with New-France and going as far as our present days, in order to gather material that could be of help to future research by art historians and French curators. The private origin of this collection dating 1767 has been explored at length to favour a more objective writing of the history of the museums in France, among which that of the short-lived Versailles National Museum. This collection has proved to be a case study of the development and culture of French museology in contact with a North American material culture, exceptionally preserved in the space of French museums. Its collecting practices have been approached not only from the point of view of a French institutional history but also considering it as a North American museographical heritage. An actual history of the places, but also a descriptive work of the actors of this heritage has been written using archives and documents either rediscovered or mostly unpublished. The major role played by individual and social interactions within museum environments in the interpretation of French collecting in American territories has been reaffirmed. The analysis going as far as 2007 of the exhibition of the objects of this cabinet as a patrimonial element of French museography has testified to the existence of a cultural continuum between France and North America. Over the period of time under study a French-American praxis of museology has been revealed through the diversification of professional and academic circles of French museology. Moreover museum logics specific to spaces devoted to North American collections in France have appeared. Those conclusions characterize the Fayolle collection, a witness to a shared theorization of the field that is Museology

This dissertation analyzes the evolution and the way of exposition in museums of natural history in the 19e century till the beginning of the 20e century. The analysis is based on the development of the « Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle » of Paris, the British Museum of London, and the national museum of natural history of Leiden. The first chapter describes the creation of natural history collections in Holland within the tradition of collecting from the 16e century till the creation of the National Museum of Natural History in 1820. The second chapter traces the creation of the three above mentioned museums. Here, the internal and external factors which played a role in their realization are investigated. The third chapter analyzes the role of the museum in Leiden in relation with the university. The fourth chapter describes the important ideas concerning the arrangement of museums of natural history and how these ideas affected the practice of presentation of the collections

The Cabinet des médailles et antiques in the French National Library holds a particular place in the vast constellation of Parisian museums. Home to the so-called « bijoux savants » that founded western collecting culture since the Renaissance, it is at once a universal coin cabinet, one of the worlds foremost collections of cut stones and gems, but also a miscellaneous collection of antiquities representing all periods and places. As described in 1930 by one of its curators, it represents a « parangon of amateur cabinets from another time ». This thesis does not directly deal with its prestigious origins but tells one chapter of its long history, looking at how, from the period of the Restoration onwards (beginning with the direction of Désiré Raoul-Rochette in 1819) until the passing of Ernest Babelon in 1924, this cabinet of antiquarian culture and collections adapted and developed to the modern Republican museum age. The life of the department is first considered as a means of understanding the role of material culture and the place of the museum inside France’s national library in the nineteenth century. It then goes on to consider the development of the collections themselves and their scientific and museological exploitation in light of the rapidly expanding practice of archaeology and highly specialised auxiliary sciences of history

Collaborations with aboriginal communities appear to be increasing in Canadian museums, with the communities shifting from speaking in a context of claiming theirrights to being given a voice in the museum context. In keeping with the questioning about ethnological museums, taking into account the voice of the aboriginal peoplesprefigures since the eighties the time for recognition. But the word recognition is used indiverse museum contexts.Based on a communicational approach, our research considers the links between thepolyphonic and recognition modalities of the exhibition media. We have attempted toidentify and understand the processes induced and generated by exhibitions’ interactionaland intertextual systems. The polyphonic system is conceptualized in three mediation moments in the production and reception spaces of the exhibition: acknowledgment, monstration, and interpretation of aboriginal points of view. They correspond to there cognition intentions of the exhibitions and designers-museographers, then visitors’recognition. We have conducted four field studies in eleven different Canadian museums : participant observation; one-on-one interviews with museum professionals; discourse analysis ; group interviews with native and non-native visitors. We have studied the collaborative practicesand these four types of museum discourses to demonstrate the recognition potential ofexhibitions dedicated to the aboriginals’ perspectives. Our research reveals several recognition modes manifest in the combination andinterlinking of aboriginals’ and practitioners’ voices; it identifies logic in the polysemy ofthe word recognition. This interpretation essay reveals patrimonial and socio-historical conflicts that generate regulation mechanisms through assimilation/accommodation. A permanent recognition phenomenon emerges from the adaptations implemented by themuseums since the beginning of aboriginal patrimonialization during the colonizationperiod. Our research proposes to apprehend the museum as a recognition place of heritage, but also of the general public and the peoples, whether donors or donees of that heritage

What do we know about art museums’ visitors? This question can appear very trivial. Visitors of art museums seem to belong to educated elite. At least, this is the image that cultural participation surveys rightly spread. Nevertheless, this perspective focuses mainly on the characteristics of the population who do not visit museums, rather than on the characteristics of the museums' visitors. These surveys help indeed to define the sociodemographic particularities of visitors, with regards to the general population but do not investigate a possible diversity within the visitor population. They show that cultural democratization did not really happen but can we really conclude that the audience constitutes a homogeneous mass of snobs defined by a precise relation to the culture?
This presentation aims to go beyond this traditional approach in sociology that focuses on sociodemographic criteria and to show how diverse can be the audience. It intends to illustrate that visitors have heterogeneous cultural profiles (described by their tastes, cultural and creative activities, and more ordinary leisure), even if they tend to be similar from a socioeconomic viewpoint, and to evaluate which impact these cultural profiles have on the way of visiting a museum.
With the use of a multiple correspondence analysis and an ascending hierarchical classification, six different classes were distinguished among the visitors of six museums of modern and contemporary art in Belgium (N: 1900) according to their cultural profiles. Each cultural profile is considered as a bricolage of different cultural repertoires: low versus high culture (Bourdieu), univores versus omnivores (Peterson), voraces versus non-voraces (Sullivan & Katz-Gerro), classical versus young culture and traditional versus modern values. Instead of observing an unidirectional change from snobs to omnivores, my results suggests indeed that several repertoires interact with one another to structure cultural profiles and to give meaning to them. Finally, with selected interviews among the different six classes, it will be demonstrated that people with an analogous cultural profile tend to share similar interpretations of museums and act as "interpretative communities" (Fish; Hooper-Greenhill). Therefore, the meaning of a museum visit for visitors requires taking into account their cultural profiles.

The Study of natural sciences in Rouen in the nineteenth century, in its widest meaning, allows to reveal social, cultural, economic, political practices or, in a more general way, scientific and philosophic ideologies. From the first botanical garden of the Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Rouen to the opening of the Parc zoologique de Clères, not forgetting the creation of the natural history museums of Rouen and Elbeuf, this thesis offers a panorama of the history of this discipline trough the prism of the museography, popularization and scientific networks. It questions and confronts the cohabitation between research and scientific popularization, both at the origin of the development of the discipline for this century. Theses relations are examined by the entermise of study of three phases which presided over the full development of natural history in Rouen. It returns at first time on the origins and the implanting of this science in Rouen, by lingering over the first private collections, then public specialized. The phenomenon of institutionalization of the natural sciences is studied through the history of the Natural history museum of Rouen and the creation of the public gardens of the city. Finally the last part becomes attached to dissemination tools of this discipline, by returning on the history of its teaching and local learned societies. It proposes being interested in the consequences of this dissemination by observing the use and the dissemination of the scientific theories during the Third Republic and the museographic creations of these years. Finally, the study concludes with the notion of exhibition of alive perceived as entertainment and popularization

In science museums and science centers, "presential" mediation positioning a mediator and the public in the co-presence of objects within a dedicated environment, remains relatively unknown. From a Communication Science perspective, analyzing actual situations transcends the simple provision of information, and focuses on the significance of third party forms within the construction of meaning. Presential communication is transient and centered on the words and gestures of an embodied third party. It provides a greater potential for interactions around practical situations, unlike other media (i.e. an exhibition). The purpose of this research is to question the rightful place of these specificities within mediation processes in the Pavillon des Sciences, a french science center. Using qualitative methods and an immersive approach (observations, interviews), this research has enabled the analysis of mediation situations and adopted the viewpoint of both the explainers and the public. Scientific mediators propose different forms of access to scientific knowledge to the public, based on the exploration of a theme and presentation of an experimental approach. These results renew a hybrid form of sui generis communication, between museal interpretation and sociocultural activities, through the presentation of a variety of signifiers

This study of the Egyptian elements in the arts and sciences in Toulouse, from the seventeenthto the twentieth century is based on a corpus of archives and an iconographic corpus belongingto both scholarly and artistic academies and the city’s museums. It makes it possible to lookinto the way Toulouse scholars have created, trasmitted and modified representations of ancientEgypt over four centuries. Certain elements are favoured such as the pyramid, the obelisk, theSphinx as well as the gods Isis and Osiris. Their meaning and function in the dynamics of thefashioning of identities and heritage, shed light on the role played by antique elements in thesocial fields. While maintaining a strong and stable symbolic over time, they are constantlyreinterpreted to fit into a specific rhetoric. The crossing of the artistic and academic knowledgesof Egypt has yielded three choice fields to be used in Egyptian references: the relationship tonature, the relationship to knowledge and the relationship to power. Within each of them, ancient Egypt acts as a binder, a mediator between the events of the past and the contemporaryreinterpretation that is translated and staged in the city’s various museums

Resting on a rich archivistic documentation, this study analyzes the institutionnalization processes and the life of the swiss ethnographic institutions. It tackles also the scientific paxis, in the field and at home. It reveals the ambivalence of the disciplinarization-institutionnalization relation, presents the detail of the praxis, presents new perspectives for the history of the discipline and offers to renew its chronology

The subject of this thesis is the study of natural history exhibitions and their development in France during the 19th century. In a time frame extending from the beginning of the 19th century to the commencement of the 20th century, we shall show the increasingly spectacular way in which natural objects were displayed. The dense visual milieu characteristic of the urban environment of the period introduced new norms and methods of display into museums and natural history collections. Furthermore, in the second half of the 19th century, the universal expositions, international events combining entertainment, science and mercantilism, provided an ideal space to exercise and emit new techniques for displaying scientific themes. The main author of these displays of natural history pieces is the scientific auxiliary, whose profession consists of transforming the specimens into objects for exhibition. In order to do this, he associates the sciences to the arts, thus playing an important role as a mediator between the scientific milieu and the public. Moreover, given the orientation of natural sciences towards experimental practice and more conceptual forms of representation, the scientific auxiliary is increasingly oriented towards the popular activities of society, such as the preparation of ornamental articles and the creation of wax cabinets and dioramas. As a result, on the eve of the 20th century, natural history museums actually became sites for show and amusement in the urban landscape

The work of this thesis also reports that the combined blockade of calcineurin and CD28 signaling, two key and distinct elements needed for an effective immune response, effectively blunted the immune-mediated destruction of dystrophin expressing myofibers expressed after AdV-Dys delivery. As an alternative to host modification (regeneration and immunosuppression) that can be associated with potential toxic effects, we have explored a strategy where by the recombinant AdV vector contains a less immunogenic transgene utrophin. We report that overexpression of utrophin and dystrophin by AdV-mediated gene transfer in adult immunocompetent mdx mice produces differential effects on muscle cell function in adult immunocompetent (mdx) mice.
