Motion in Maps, Maps in Motion argues that the mapping of stories, movement, and change should not be understood as an innovation of contemporary cartography, but rather as an important aspect of human cartography with a longer history than might be assumed. The authors in this collection reflect upon the main characteristics and evolutions of story and motion mapping, from the figurative news and history maps that were mass-produced in early modern Europe, through the nineteenth- and twentieth-century flow maps that appeared in various atlases, up to the digital and interactive motion and personalized maps that are created today. Rather than presenting a clear and homogeneous history from the past up until the present, this book offers a toolbox for understanding and interpreting the complex interplays and links between narrative, motion, and maps.

The reconstitution of consciousness offers a more historical and thus critical alternative in conceptualizing colonial violence than the politics of identity. The Orphan of Asia exhibits the symptom of channeling political impossibility into a personalized struggle over identity. It presents a parable of Taiwan's gradual “coming into being” with the intensification of colonial rule and its disillusion with Chinese nationalism. It also became indicative of the historical moment when the intensifying Pacific war had precluded any revolutionary or reformist corrective to Japanese colonialism, and when China and Chinese nationalism no longer provided a clear and viable alternative to Taiwan's emancipation.

This chapter offers an alternative to more conventional versions of identity politics—transformational identity politics. Transformational identity politics represent nonbinary models of identity; differential subjectivities; an expanded, deeply multiplicitous concept of the universal; and relational epistemologies that facilitate the creation of new forms of commonalities. Although identity politics originated in a space of intersectionality that embraced multiple, complex identities, this chapter argues that contemporary uses of identity politics have become too oppositional to effect radical change. However, rather than entirely rejecting identity-based politics and the personalized experiences on which they're based, the chapter redefines identity by anchoring it in a metaphysics of interconnectedness. Through an analysis of Paula Gunn Allen's, Gloria Anzaldúa's, and Audre Lorde's threshold positionings (their creative use of identity politics, as it were), this chapter illustrates some of the forms transformational identity politics can take.

What kind of book was dedicated to what Montaigne describes as a domestic and private end (in ‘Au lecteur’)? Chapter 2.4 offers two case-studies of manuscript life-writing and annotation intended for descendants in times of religious strife. Sir Henry Slingsby, a Yorkshire gentleman caught up in the beginnings of the British civil wars in the 1640s, keeps a book of personal commentaries modelled on Florio’s English Montaigne. Pieter van Veen’s copy of the Essais becomes a personalized emblem book and a ‘Memoire’ of the manner in which its owner (a Catholic) survived the religious troubles without leaving his home. Van Veen lived in The Hague until the 1620s, and has a minor place in the history of Dutch painting; his brother was the more famous Otto van Veen. These examples help us contextualize the Essais as a work of art made for friends and family in specific historical circumstances.

Disaster films and storylines overwhelm, shock, and immobilize publics. They offer little in the way of possibilities for social transformation or revolution. The individual crisis, the individualization of global catastrophe in its miniaturization in small disasters, like the sinkhole, personalizes ecological crisis and, quite literally, brings it home. Many of the popular media stories about sinkholes describe them as unpredictable and arbitrary events in which entire houses are consumed, streets and sidewalks cave in, and people and their pets are absorbed by hollow chasms in and around their homes. The sinkhole crisis demands expediency for the immediacy of its threat. The real threat of a sinkhole might be more effective in changing the relationship of individuals to the environment.

Exile has received relatively little attention in dance studies, although forced migration in the mid-twentieth century reconfigured artistic and intellectual landscapes on multiple continents. This chapter turns to German dance during and after the Third Reich, while drawing on theoretical and historical treatments of exile developed in other disciplines, as well as constructions of national identity. Such perspectives on displacement suggest that it is not the place of exiled artists, which needs to be reassessed within national dance histories; rather, these artists offer an opportunity to assess the contours of the historical narrations themselves and, with them, other forms of belonging. The case studies of Valeska Gert and Kurt Jooss highlight the micropolitics of exile’s transnational exchange. These intricate, personalized crosscurrents were catalyzed by survival strategies that registered in the work itself and left traces in history, which can only be seen by engaging with multiple forms of otherness.

This chapter focuses on the platformization of the health sector. A burgeoning field of online health platforms has emerged, ranging from personal fitness apps to medical platforms that are used by patients, doctors, and researchers. A global industry of health-related platforms is being stacked onto, and interwoven with, the infrastructural core of the ecosystem; developing sectoral health platforms is a potentially lucrative and data-rich area that major operators are keen to invest in. Examining health platforms, the chapter unravels a peculiar double-edged logic in how their benefit is argued: they offer personalized data-driven services to their customers, while simultaneously serving an overarching public interest in medical research, the outcomes of which ostensibly benefit everyone. Using the platform mechanisms as an analytical prism, the chapter scrutinizes three single platforms, which are illustrative of the health sector: 23andMe, PatientsLikeMe, and Parkinson mPower.

This book brings thirty-nine small democracies into the comparative politics canon for the first time. For over fifty years, scholars have debated the complex and dynamic process called democratization: currently the discipline thinks that economic growth, cultural homogeneity, institutional design, party system institutionalization, and geographic location explain why some transitions consolidate, and others do not. But this work has systematically overlooked the world’s thirty-nine smallest states (with populations of 1 million or less), located in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and Caribbean, which constitute 20 percent of all countries. These states are much more likely than larger states to be democratic. Existing theory is tested against these understudied cases using a combination of statistical analysis and cross-case comparison. A new theory is then built, based on extensive qualitative research in small states. The personalization of politics is highlighted as ubiquitous in small states, regardless of region, history, institutional design, and level of economic wealth; and as strongly shaping the practice of politics in these countries. Many factors that democratization scholars argue predict successful consolidation do not fit small states: democracy can and does persist against all odds. This hopeful finding is significant in a world of rising democratic pessimism. The book’s optimism is tempered, however by showing that the hyper-personalized politics common to all small states is not without problems, including executive domination, patron-client linkages and extreme polarization. These offer cautionary lessons for all democracies in an era increasingly defined by populism and rising citizen disaffection with representative institutions.

Negative symptoms are considered to be the fundamental symptoms of schizophrenia. This book provides up-to-date, practical information on the management of negative symptoms in schizophrenia by describing the concepts, definitions, long-term course, evaluation (including rating scales), and treatment of such symptoms. Along with symptoms based on clinical interview and observed behaviour, the subjective experience of people with negative symptoms of schizophrenia is also described. The book helps the reader understand the link between the latest research in this field and offers an expert insight into the various approaches that are adopted by some of the most prestigious schools of psychopathology. The first chapter guides the reader through the complex and sometimes contradictory interpretations of negative symptoms. It also describes the most commonly used negative symptom rating scales. Some of the scales or parts of them are included in the Appendix. The chapter on the basic symptoms of schizophrenia and their relationship to negative symptoms can lend support both for early intervention programmes and for the long-term follow-up of patients. It describes the evaluation of basic symptoms and provides information on currently used rating instruments developed for the standardized evaluation of such symptoms. The delineation of the long-term relationship between primary negative and positive symptoms and between primary and secondary negative symptoms in the Chapter 3 can be instrumental in the diagnostic process and personalized treatment of schizophrenia, which is characterized by complex and varying psychopathology and comorbidities (e.g. depression, extrapyramidal symptoms). Chapter 4 on the subjective experiences of patients with negative symptoms contributes to a better understanding of patients with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. It also includes a description of a number a rating instruments focusing on the subjective experiences of the patients. Chapters 5 and 6, on treatments, including the pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for negative symptoms in schizophrenia, provide evidence-based recommendations for clinical practice.

This volume compares the two most powerful authoritarian states in global politics today: Russia and China. For all their power and money, both regimes have faced difficult trade-offs in seeking both political stability and reliable information about society while confronting the West and its international influence. They have also made different choices: Russia today is a competitive authoritarian regime, while China is a non-competitive authoritarian regime. Despite the different paths taken after the tumultuous events of 1989, both regimes have returned to a more personalized form of authoritarian rule. By placing China and Russia side by side, this volume examines regime-society relations and produces new insights, including what strategies their rulers have used to stay in power while forging political stability and gathering information; how societal groups have resisted, complied with, or responded to these strategies; and what costs and benefits, both anticipated and unexpected, have accompanied the bargains political leaders and their societies have struck. The essays in this volume change the way we understand authoritarian politics and expand the terrain of how we analyze regime-society relations in authoritarian states. On the societal side, this book looks not just at society as a whole but also at the specific roles of public opinion, labor politics, political socialization, political protests, media politics, environmental movements, and nongovernmental organizations. On the regime side, this study is distinctive in examining not just domestic threats and the general strategies rulers deploy in order to manage them but also international threats and the rationale behind and impact of new laws and new policies, both domestic and international.
