Abstract Cortical folding is a hallmark of brain topography whose variability across individuals remains a puzzle. In this paper, we call for an effort to improve our understanding of the pli de passage phenomenon, namely annectant gyri buried in the depth of the main sulci. We suggest that plis de passage could become an interesting benchmark for models of the cortical folding process. As an illustration, we speculate on the link between modern biological models of cortical folding and the development of the Pli de Passage Frontal Moyen (PPFM) in the middle of the central sulcus. For this purpose, we have detected nine interrupted central sulci in the Human Connectome Project dataset, which are used to explore the organization of the hand sensorimotor areas in this rare configuration of the PPFM.

Abstract Identifying the genes that contribute to the variability in brain regions involved in language processing may shed light on the evolution of brain structures essential to the emergence of language in Homo sapiens. The superior temporal asymmetrical pit (STAP), which is not observed in chimpanzees, represents an ideal phenotype to investigate the genetic variations that support human communication. The left STAP depth was significantly associated with a predicted enhancer annotation located in the 14q23.1 locus, between DACT1 and KIAA0586, in the UK Biobank British discovery sample (N = 16 515). This association was replicated in the IMAGEN cohort (N = 1726) and the UK Biobank non-British validation sample (N = 2161). This genomic region was also associated to a lesser extent with the right STAP depth and the formation of sulcal interruptions, “plis de passage,” in the bilateral STAP but not with other structural brain MRI phenotypes, highlighting its notable association with the superior temporal regions. Diffusion MRI emphasized an association with the fractional anisotropy of the left auditory fibers of the corpus callosum and with networks involved in linguistic processing in resting-state functional MRI. Overall, this evidence demonstrates a specific relationship between this locus and the establishment of the superior temporal regions that support human communication.

The regulation of skeletal muscle lipolysis and fat oxidation is a complex process involving multiple proteins and enzymes. Emerging work indicates that skeletal muscle PLIN proteins likely play a role in the hydrolysis of triglycerides stored in lipid droplets and the passage of fatty acids to the mitochondria for oxidation. In adipocytes, PLIN1 regulates lipolysis by interacting with comparative gene identification-58 (CGI-58), an activator of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL). Upon lipolytic stimulation, PLIN1 is phosphorylated, releasing CGI-58 to activate ATGL and initiate triglyceride breakdown. The absence of PLIN1 in skeletal muscle leads us to believe that other PLIN family members undertake this role. The focus of this review is on the PLIN family proteins expressed in skeletal muscle: PLIN2, PLIN3, and PLIN5. To date, most studies involving these PLIN proteins have used nonmuscle tissues and cell cultures to determine their potential roles. Results from work in these models support a role for PLIN proteins in sequestering lipases during basal conditions and in potentially working together for lipase translocation and activity during lipolysis. In skeletal muscle, PLIN2 tends to mirror the lipid content and may play a role in lipid droplet growth and stability through lipase interactions on the lipid droplet surface, whereas the skeletal muscle roles of both PLIN3 and PLIN5 seem to be more complex because they are found not only on the lipid droplet, but also at the mitochondria. Clearly, further work is needed to fully understand the intricate mechanisms by which PLIN proteins contribute to skeletal muscle lipid metabolism.

Coculture with somatic cells is an alternative to improve suboptimal invitro culture conditions. In pigs, IVF is related to poor male pronuclear formation and high rates of polyspermy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a coculture system with porcine luteal cells (PLCs) on the IVM of porcine cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs). Abattoir-derived ovaries were used to obtain PLCs and COCs. COCs were matured invitro in TCM-199 with or without the addition of human menopausal gonadotrophin (hMG; C+hMG and C-hMG respectively), in coculture with PLCs from passage 1 (PLC-1) and in PLC-1 conditioned medium (CM). In the coculture system, nuclear maturation rates were significantly higher than in the C-hMG and CM groups, but similar to rates in the C+hMG group. In cumulus cells, PLC-1 coculture decreased viability, early apoptosis and necrosis, and increased late apoptosis compared with C+hMG. PLC-1 coculture also decreased reactive oxygen species levels in cumulus cells. After IVF, monospermic penetration and IVF efficiency increased in the PLC-1 group compared with the C+hMG group. After invitro culture, higher blastocysts rates were observed in the PLC-1 group. This is the first report of a coculture system of COCs with PLCs. Our model could be an alternative for the conventional maturation medium plus gonadotrophins because of its lower rates of polyspermic penetration and higher blastocysts rates, key issues in porcine invitro embryo production.

Current researches report an actual benefit of a treatment for oral cancer via inhibition of proteolytic matrix metallopro-teinases (MPP) with a peptide drug, called CTT1. However, peptides present poor oral bioavailability. Topical administration on oral mucosa avoids its passage through the gastrointestinal tract and the first-pass liver metabolism, but the barrier function of the oral mucosa can impair the permeation and retention of CTT1. The objective of this study is to incorporate CTT1 into a mucoadhesive precursor of liquid crystalline system (PLCS) as an interesting strategy for the topical treatment of oral cancer. PLCS consisting of oleic acid, ethoxylated 20 and propoxylated cetyl alcohol 5, polyethyleneimine (P)-associated chitosan (C) dispersion and CTT1 (FPC-CTT1) was developed and characterized by polarized light microscopy (PLM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). In vitro permeation and retention across esophageal mucosa, In vitro cytotoxicity towards tongue squamous cell carcinoma cells, and in vivo evaluation of vascular changes using the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model were performed. PLM and SAXS showed that FPC-CTT1acted as PLCS, because it formed a lamellar liquid crystalline system after the addition of artificial saliva. FPC-CTT1increased approximately 2-fold the flux of permeation and 3-fold the retention of CTT1 on the porcine esophageal mucosa. CTT1 does not affect cell viability. CAM tests showed that FPC preserved the blood vessels and it can be a safe formulation. These findings encourage the use of the FPC-CTT1 for topical treatment of oral cancer.

AbstractThis contribution aims to reach linguists and lexicographers as well as generalists and scholars concerned with editing, commenting on, and translating Greek and Latin texts mentioning glass. The article takes the form of eleven stand-alone numbered sections, each addressing individual passages in ancient authors, in the order described below, followed by discussions of the Greek words for glass (kuanos, lithos (khutê), hualos). In particular, it proposes solutions to passages that have baffled editors of ancient texts (Hdt. 3.24; POxy. 3536); it alerts the reader to passages that have been reinterpreted in the light of advances in our understanding of ancient production techniques (Petr. Sat. 51; Plin. Nat. 36.193; Str. 16.2.25) or are placed in a novel context by recent archaeological research (Ar. Ach. 72-3; Ar. Nu. 768; Ath. 5.199f; Diocletian's Price Edict 16.1-9). In order to facilitate consultation and avoid unnecessary repetition, each section addresses one single issue while providing comprehensive background for that issue. An index of citations and Greek and Latin words guides the reader to all sections in which they are discussed; a second index lists subjects relating to ancient glass and (modern) glass terminology.

Contrairement à l'abstention-surveillance, la surveillance active est une modalité de prise en charge curative. Elle vise à retarder le traitement d'une tumeur peu agressive jusqu’au moment où elle le deviendra tout en restant dans la fenêtre de curabilité de la maladie. À travers une lecture de littératures, nous allons essayer de maitre la lumière sur la place et les modalités de la surveillance active, dans les groupes favorables des cancers de la prostate et de répondre aux questions suivantes : Pourquoi la surveillance active ? Pour qui ? Comment l’instauré ? et quand doit-on l’arrêter ? La majorité des essais, cliniques publiés s’accordent à dire, que la surveillance active est une attitude parfaitement adaptée aux patients du groupe favorable d’AMICO, voire même une partie du groupe intermédiaire bas risque. Les résultats en matière de survie globale et d’évènement métastatiques, sont similaires à ceux des patients traités d’emblée par chirurgie et ou radiothérapie, avec en plus moins de toxicité. La surveillance est basée essentiellement sur le dosage périodique du PSA, rebiopsie selon des protocoles propres à chaque équipe. La décision du passage aux traitements invasifs, sera conditionnée par la progression du score Gleason, selon des algorithmes dont certains, sont déjà validés à l’international. La surveillance active, doit faire partie intégrante des décisions de prise en charge des adénocarcinomes prostatiques localisés favorables. Cette attitude nous permet, d’éviter de surtraiter un grand nombre, de petites lésions non évolutives, tout en ayant la possibilité et les moyens, de rattraper les lésions qui progressent.

Abstract We present the mineralogical, micromorphological, and geochemical characteristics of the paleosols and their carbonates from Karahamzall, Ankara (Central Turkey). The paleosols include calcretes of powdery to nodular forms and alternate with channel deposits. The presence of pedofeatures, such as clay cutans, floating grains, circumgranular cracks, MnO linings, secondary carbonate rims, traces of past bioturbation and remnants of root fragments are all the evidence of pedogenesis. Bw is the most common soil horizon showing subangular-angular blocky to granular or prismatic microstructures. Calcretes, on the other hand, are evaluated as semi-mature massive, nodular, tubular or powdery forms. The probable faunal and floral passages may also imply the traces of life from when these alluvial deposits were soil. The presence of early diagenetic palygorskite and dolomite together with high salinization, high calcification and low chemical index of alteration values are evidence of the formation of calcretes under arid and dry conditions. δ13C compositions of the carbonates ranging from -7.11 ‰ to -7.74 ‰ VPDB are comformable with the world pedogenic carbonates favouring the C4 vegetation; likely δ18O compositions of the carbonates are between -3.97 ‰ and -4.91 ‰ which are compatible with the paleosols formed under the influence of meteroic water in the vadose zone

RÉSUMÉ L'analyse géométrique des paléotracés des bassins supérieurs de la Loire et de l'Allier précise leur paléogéographie et définit leurs relations avec le volcanisme et les phénomènes sédimentaires associés. Les données radiométriques récentes et les marqueurs téphrochronologiques fournissent un cadre chronologique à ce schéma. Ces données rendent peu vraisemblable l'hypothèse d'un cours plio-pléistocène de la Loire vers l'Allier. Elles démontrent en contrepartie l'existence probable d'un ancien tracé méridien de la rivière fossilisé par les basaltes du Devès à l'amont du bassin du Puy. Dans le haut bassin de l'Allier, les preuves d'un passage de l'Allier par le bassin de Paulhaguet au Pliocène demeurent contestables. L'existence d'un ancien tracé N-S de la Sénouire, barré par l'appareil volcanique du Pié-du-Roi. est par contre confirmée. Elle peut être considérée comme à l'origine de la sédimentation dans le bassin et du déversement de la rivière vers le nord. Plus au nord, la paléogéographie de la vallée pliocène de l'Allagnon, fossilisée par les basanites du Cézallier, est précisée. À la bordure orientale du Mont-Dore, des modifications de tracés importantes sont mises en évidence dans les drainages quaternaires des vallées affluentes de l'Allier (Couzes). Enfin, à l'est de ce secteur, l'évolution complexe du tracé de l'Allier est retracée avec précision sur plus de 4 Ma, grâce aux jalons fournis par le volcanisme. Ces résultats montrent le rôle direct du volcanisme dans la modification de la majorité des tracés, mais soulignent aussi son rôle inducteur important dans les sédimentations fluvio-lacustres qui leur sont liées. Ils conduisent ainsi à réduire le rôle direct de la tectonique, au profit de celui des dynamiques climatiques exacerbées par le volcanisme.

O texto aborda a partir do pensamento de Deleuze-Guattari a ideia de rostidade, passando pelas configurações de subjetivação, bem como seus possíveis atravessamentos pelas dobras da educação. Como a educação pode fomentar o rosto? Que agenciamentos atravessam nessa produção maquínica de subjetivação? Como Deleuze-Guattari compreendem a produção da rostidade? Um rosto não é encontrar ou procurar, nem equivale a fomentar um conceito, mas ele passa por maquinismo e por um conjunto de vigilância. Ele também fomenta resistência, cava espaço de invenção, produz seus desdobramentos, configurando um verdadeiro criacionismo. Sobre ele, há uma guerra, uma labuta diária que leva a educação e seus processos a se arrastarem por dobras (im)possíveis. Não se chega em um rosto acabado, finalizado, sendo, portanto, uma batalha, uma guerra diária para a criação do rosto. Do mesmo modo que não há um solo unificado, mesmo na luta permanente para compor um rosto universalizante. Pela superfície do rosto navega a multiplicidade, permitindo embaralhar a máquina de codificação. So a frenzied matron cries out to Phoebus as she rushes through an appalled Rome. In CQ 34 (1984), 454f. I pointed out that the words primos in ortus could not here bear their normal sense ‘to the far east’ (as taken by Duff, similarly Bourgery-Ponchont, and others), which in view of the next line would be geographically absurd, and, distraught as the lady was, even so highly improbable. I did, however, then think R. J. Getty right in taking the expression primos ortus as simply = ‘the east’, and adding ‘the epithet primos appears to be otiose’. But I now feel very doubtful about the epithet being viewed as otiose in order that the words may denote Egypt; quite different are the passages noted in OLD primus 6 ‘belonging to the rising sun, eastern’, as Stat. Silv. 1.4.73 ‘occidiias primasque domos’ in the cited Sen. Oed. 116 ‘miles… ausus Eois equitare campis / figere et mundo tua signa primo’ the literal meaning is no doubt ‘on the world's first edge’ (Miller, Loeb), but its development into ‘eastern’ is readily seen. Egypt, however, as viewed by Rome, is but the bare beginning of the east, and that is what primos must indicate above (note emphatic position): see OLD primus 10 b ‘the nearest part of, the entrance, threshold, or sim., of, noting e.g. Ov. Fast. 1.717 ‘horreat Aeneadas et primus et ultimus orbis’, Cic. Fam. 3.6.2. ‘te in prima prouincia uelle esse, ut quam primum decederes’. In a characteristic departure from their stock meaning Lucan's words primos in ortus must then mean ‘to the threshold of the east’, i.e. the delta of the Nile, as explained in the next line (684): contrast 7.360 primo gentes oriente = ‘the nations of the far east’ (Duff). Abstract Aim Blood brain barrier (BBB) integrity in neurological disease is tested with gadolinium-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Pathology studies have shown gadolinium deposits in brains with intact BBBs, thus raising concern. We propose a novel use of Arterial Spin Labelling (ASL) –a MRI technique which ‘tags’ blood-water making it a tracer– as a safer alternative in assessing BBB permeability. ASL’s ability to capture T2 (transverse relaxation time) changes of tagged water in blood vs. in tissue (post-exchange across the BBB) supports its feasibility. Method We developed an ASL protocol and collected data from healthy volunteers (n=5) on a 3T Achieva Scanner with the parameters: echo times (TEs) 30, 40, 50, 60, 70ms; repetition time 4200ms; field of view 240x240x47mm and post label delays (PLDs) 1,000ms and 1,500ms. We calculated mean ASL signal (arb units) from the images at each TE, and then extracted T2(ms) values for each volunteer at each PLD. The primary outcome was the change in T2 across PLDs. Results Calculated mean T2s demonstrated a majority of increasing T2s across longer PLDs (n=3) with mean T2 of 55.3+5.3ms at PLD 1,000ms and 62.1+10.8ms at PLD 1,500ms. However, the results are inconclusive as the sample size precluded statistical testing. Conclusions We developed an ASL protocol that demonstrated changes in T2 of blood water with time passage, indicating water exchange through the BBB. This supports the use of ASL in assessing BBB permeability, but more wide-scale studies need to be performed.

Abstract This note adduces three passages in Seneca the Elder to reinforce a demonstration in CQ 69 (2019), 793–8001 that the text of Plin. HN 7.117 has suffered corruption in one of its clauses and requires emendation to restore Pliny's intent. This additional evidence concerns a trope employed by declaimers which could have predisposed a scribe to alter Pliny's text to state that Cicero proscribed Mark Antony. Such a statement has no place in a list of achievements that otherwise all belong to Cicero's consulship twenty years earlier in 63 b.c.

The study of fluvial dynamics of the Rio das Velhas in the section connecting the Quadrilátero Ferríferoand the Bambuí basin, relying on a compilation of geomorphological, sedimentological and structuraldata indicates a Cenozoic morphogenesis controlled by uplift of regional scale with interference of faultslocated at the contacts of morphostructural compartments. These compartments are strongly adapted tothe Precambrian litostructural domains controlling the geomorphological configuration of the differentparts of the river valley.The initial chronological datum is marked by remainders of the Sulamericana Surface (Neogene).During the Plio-Pleistocene period three levels of stepped terraces were formed. During the Holocene ainner floodplain developed in the Lower Terrace.The level of the Upper Terrace (Pliocene) corresponds to the end of dissection phase which reaches adepth of 150 m and shows a equilibrated longitudinal profile over the whole area. The sediments of theMiddle and Lower Terraces have been deposited after new dissection phases with minimum depths of 60and 10 m, respectively. These data of dissections depths and the stamped position of the floodplain confirmsthe gradual decreasing of the regional uplift intensity during the Pleistocene times.The last three events of the valley formation indicate a superimposition of the Rio das Velhas onto thestructures of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero with formation of a water-gap at the passage of the Serra do curral,named “Fecho de Sabará”. In consequence occurs a strong local retention of alluvial sediments causing aimportant alteration of river dynamics.The decreasing uplift during Holocene times is accompanied by the transition from braided channelssystems, prevailing during the Pleistocene, to a meandering channel type. The effects of historic miningactivity induce the return to the braided system.Tectonic activity by faulting is demonstrated by dislocations in the alluvial sequences of the LowerTerrace and in the longitudinal profile of the Middle and Upper Terraces with a total off-set of 50 m aswell as by river capture younger than the Middle Terrace.

Abstract In modern gas turbines, endwall contouring (EWC) is employed to modify the static pressure field downstream of the vanes and minimize the growth of secondary flow structures developed in the blade passage. Purge flow (or egress) from the upstream rim-seal interferes with the mainstream flow, adding to the loss generated in the rotor. Despite this, EWC is typically designed without consideration of mainstream–egress interactions. The performance gains offered by EWC can be reduced, or in the limit eliminated, when purge air is considered. In addition, EWC can result in a reduction in sealing effectiveness across the rim seal. Consequently, industry is pursuing a combined design approach that encompasses the rim-seal, seal-clearance profile, and EWC on the rotor endwall. This paper presents the design of and preliminary results from a new single-stage axial turbine facility developed to investigate the fundamental fluid dynamics of egress–mainstream flow interactions. To the authors' knowledge, this is the only test facility in the world capable of investigating the interaction effects between cavity flows, rim seals, and EWC. The design of optical measurement capabilities for future studies, employing volumetric velocimetry (VV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), is also presented. The fluid-dynamically scaled rig operates at benign pressures and temperatures suited to these techniques and is modular. The facility enables expedient interchange of EWC (integrated into the rotor bling), blade-fillet and rim-seal geometries. The measurements presented in this paper include: gas concentration effectiveness and swirl measurements on the stator wall and in the wheel-space core; pressure distributions around the nozzle guide vanes (NGV) at three different spanwise locations; pitchwise static pressure distributions downstream of the NGV at four axial locations on the stator platform.
