This study aimed to identify the incrusting and sedentary animals associated with the hull of a tugboat active in the ports of Pernambuco and later loaned to the port of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Thus, areas with dense biofouling were scraped and the species then classified in terms of their bioinvasive status for the Brazilian coast. Six were native to Brazil, two were cryptogenic and 16 nonindigenous; nine of the latter were classified as established (Musculus lateralis, Sphenia fragilis, Balanus trigonus, Biflustra savartii, Botrylloides nigrum, Didemnum psammatodes, Herdmania pallida, Microscosmus exasperatus, and Symplegma rubra) and three as invasive (Mytilopsis leucophaeta, Amphibalanus reticulatus, and Striatobalanus amaryllis). The presence of M. leucophaeata, Amphibalanus eburneus and A. reticulatus on the boat's hull propitiated their introduction onto the Natal coast. The occurrence of a great number of tunicate species in Natal reflected the port area's benthic diversity and facilitated the inclusion of two bivalves - Musculus lateralis and Sphenia fragilis - found in their siphons and in the interstices between colonies or individuals, respectively. The results show the role of biofouling on boat hulls in the introduction of nonindigenous species and that the port of Recife acts as a source of some species.

Le concept de fatigue de compassion est courant dans la littérature scientifique du travail social international, bien qu'étonnamment inexistant dans la littérature espagnole. La fatigue peut être définie par la compassion comme un état d'épuisement et de dysfonctionnement biologique, psychologique et relationnel, le résultat d'une exposition immédiate ou prolongée à un stress compassionnel et comme le résultat final du processus progressif et cumulatif résultant d'un contact prolongé, continu et intense. avec des clients ou des clients. patients, l'utilisation de soi et l'exposition au stress. Le maintien du port peut entraîner des images sévères typiques de traumatismes secondaires ou l'apparition de Burned Professional Syndrome (Burnout). Dans tous les cas, si un professionnel du travail social vit ce phénomène, sa capacité à faire preuve d'empathie, à se connecter et à aider ses clients est gravement diminuée. Paradoxalement, la fatigue compassionnelle est, d'une part, nécessaire et inévitable si de bonnes pratiques sont développées ; d'autre part dangereuse et invalidante si elle n'est pas compensée par d'autres mécanismes. La fatigue compassionnelle ne peut être prévenue mais elle peut et doit être palliée consciemment. Accroître la capacité de reconnaître et de minimiser l'impact de l'attrition est une responsabilité du professionnel et de l'organisation dans laquelle il travaille. Enfin, l'ouvrage pose la question de savoir quoi faire face à ce phénomène et comment prendre soin de soi, professionnellement et institutionnellement.

Анотація:
A new nematode genus and species associated with terrestrial gastropods from Vietnam is described and illustrated. Partial SSU and ITS rDNA sequences were obtained and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. Both morphologically and molecularly, Neoalloionema tricaudatum gen. n., sp. n. is closest to Alloionema appendiculatum, another gastropod associate. It is differentiated from A. appendiculatum by the presence of an outstretched vs reflexed testis and the absence of denticles in the stoma, by the parasitic juveniles inhabiting the pallial cavity vs the foot of the host and having six vs two lips and large sucker-like phasmids vs pore-like. The most peculiar feature of N. tricaudatum gen. n., sp. n. is the presence of paired, solid appendages located at the mid-tail region of juveniles from the pallial cavity of the host. The nature of the association between N. tricaudatum gen. n., sp. n. and its gastropod host is discussed.

There has been a recent, rapid increase in both land application of dairy shed effluent in Southland, New Zealand, and the microbial load in ground and surface waters. We investigated the fate of faecal coliforms, a host-specific Salmonella bacteriophage, and a non-reactive chemical tracer (Br–), when applied to large intact lysimeter soil cores (500 mm diam. by 500 mm high), to determine the pattern of microbial transport through typical Southland soils. The soils were a poorly drained Fragic Perch-gley Pallic Soil, and a well-drained Typic Firm Brown Soil. A depth of 25 mm of dairy shed effluent containing faecal coliforms and spiked with bacteriophage and Br– was applied to the soil at a rate of 5 mm/h followed by ~1 pore volume of simulated rainfall applied at 5 mm/h. Resulting leachates, collected continuously over ~1 pore volume, were analysed for the microbial and bromide tracers. The microbial tracers moved rapidly through both soils, peaking early in the leachate at ~0.15 pore volume and then tailing off in a pattern indicative of bypass flow. Bromide moved more uniformly through the soils but peaked at ~0.5–0.8 pore volume. The microbial flow pattern observed indicates that the structure in these soils makes them vulnerable to leaching of microbes into local surface and ground water. The large difference between the rate of microbial and chemical tracer transport indicates chemical tracers should only be used with caution to model microbial transport parameters.

Increasing our capacity to predict extreme storm surges is one of the key issues in terms of coastal flood risk prevention and adaptation. Dynamically forecasting storm surges is computationally expensive. Here, we focus on an alternative data-driven approach and set up a weather-type statistical downscaling for daily maximum storm surge (SS) prediction, using atmospheric hindcasts (CFSR and CFSv2) and 15 years of tidal gauge station measurements. We focus on predicting the storm surge at La Rochelle–La Pallice tidal gauge station. First, based on a sensitivity analysis to the various parameters of the weather-type approach, we find that the model configuration providing the best performance in SS prediction relies on a fully supervised classification using minimum daily sea level pressure (SLP) and maximum SLP gradient, with 1° resolution in the northeast Atlantic domain as the predictor. Second, we compare the resulting optimal model with the inverse barometer approach and other statistical models (multi-linear regression; semi-supervised and unsupervised weather-types based approaches). The optimal configuration provides more accurate predictions for extreme storm surges, but also the capacity to identify unusual atmospheric storm patterns that can lead to extreme storm surges, as the Xynthia storm for instance (a decrease in the maximum absolute error of 50%).

Au début du XIXe siècle, la marine connaît une mutation technique accélérée. Le « vieux port » aux origines médiévales de la Rochelle ne répond plus aux besoins de la navigation, ce qui donne lieu au creusement d’un bassin intérieur effectif en 1808. Cet équipement s’avère vite insuffisant et au milieu du siècle, la construction d’un second bassin hors les murs s’impose et voit le quartier de la Ville-en-Bois se développer à proximité. Rapidement, à son tour, dans les années 1850-1860, ce nouveau bassin ne répond plus aux exigences maritimes modernes. La construction d’un troisième bassin à flot en eau profonde est alors envisagée pour la première fois. La question du lieu se pose. La réponse vient de l’ingénieur hydrographe Bouquet de la Grye, qui, après avoir étudié différentes possibilités de la rade, propose en 1876 un lieu à 5 km à l’ouest de la ville, ce sera la création du port en eau profonde de La Pallice. La venue, en 1878, du ministre des travaux publics Freycinet entérine ce grand projet devenu national. Les travaux débutent en 1880 jusqu’au 19 août 1890, date de l’inauguration par le président Sadi Carnot. Le 5 juin 1891, l’établissement portuaire est ouvert à la navigation et le trafic se développe selon une progression constante. La Première Guerre mondiale met en lumière les avantages de La Pallice et son rôle important dans la défense nationale, mais le port présenté comme moderne en 1890 devient bientôt exigu pour recevoir des navires de plus en plus grands. La construction d'un môle d'escale en eau profonde est adoptée en 1923, pour être en partie opérationnel avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. At the beginning of the 19 th century, the navy underwent an accelerated technical change. The "old port" with medieval origins of La Rochelle no longer meets the needs of navigation, which gives rise to the digging of an effective interior basin in 1808. This equipment quickly proves insufficient and in the middle of the century, the construction of a second basin outside the walls was essential and saw the Ville-en-Bois district develop nearby. Quickly, in turn, in the years 1850-1860, this new basin no longer met modern maritime requirements. The construction of a third wet dock in deep water was then considered for the first time. The question of location arises. The answer comes from the hydrographer engineer Bouquet de la Grye who, after having studied the various possibilities of the bay, proposed in 1876 a place 5 km west of the city, with would be the creation of the deep water port of La Pallice. The visit of the Minister of Public Works, Freycinet, in 1878, endorsed this major project which had become national in scope. Work began in 1880 until August 19, 1890, the date of inauguration by President Sadi Carnot. On June 5, 1891, the port establishment was opened to navigation, and traffic grew steadily. The First World War highlights the advantages of La Pallice and its important role in national defence, but the port presented as modern in 1890 soon becomes cramped to receive increasingly large ships. The construction of a deep-water stopover mole was adopted in 1923, to be partly operational before the Second World War. This thesis, which is part of urban history, also aims to demonstrate how the creation of the port of La Pallice has enabled La Rochelle to renew its great maritime destiny by reviving its marchant economy

Following terrorist attacks on twin towers in the USA and Limburg oil tanker in Yemen, theIMO has defined a supplementary chapter and an appendix named ISPS code to its SOLAS,to prevent similar events in maritime transportation. The ISPS code forces the ports, ships andall organizations, who work in marine industry, to keep their security gates more tightly. Thissituation affects involved parties in good and bad ways. Good impacts like increasing insecurity level, efficiency, effectiveness and competitiveness; and bad effects like increasing inannual costs, administration works and manning.This thesis is based on a study that was run by preparing an electronic questionnaire anddistributing among the Swedish ports to get first hand information about the ISPS codeimpacts on port and port activities. Through them it was found that the ISPS code achieved itsmain goal, which it has been described as less smuggling and less theft in Sweden; whileactually the ISPS is an anti terrorism regulation by its nature.On the other hand, the indirect impacts of the code have played an important role in itssuccess; therefore they have been reviewed as well. The ISPS code’s indirect impacts on portscan be summarized as its effects on efficiency, effectiveness, administration cost, serviceprice, profit, competitiveness, service level, customer satisfaction, damage occurring,documentation, manning , lead time and checking process.

Population growth, urbanization, globalization of human migration, consumerism; technical and information technology development - are just a few trends of the modern society that set challenges to transport geography. To meet growing market demands new technologies and services were developed. With the introduction of ISO containers shipping performance got a tremendous boost for development. Container standardization made it possible to unify transportation and transshipment technologies, to rationalize ship space utilization and develop sustainable logistic chains between countries and continents. Intermodal transportation is proven to be profitable and sustainable on the long distances, while on short distances road transportation is still more attractive and is continued to be used for high varieties of purposes. This master thesis is an attempt to show that intermodal transport may be successfully used for some special cases of short-distance transportation. One of these special cases is intermodal transportation from ports located in urban areas. The aim of this project was to analyze feasibility of the intermodal short distance transportation in regards to the port of Stockholm. For this purpose, the current logistic system of the port of Stockholm was analyzed and an intermodal system that can be used for the future port operation was evaluated. The goal of the case study conducted in the thesis was to understand how efficiency and environmental factors of port logistics network may be improved. To achieve these goals an extensive analysis was performed concerning current demand and flow distributions, available and proposed infrastructure in the region.

This urban design thesis is a study of the urban issues and design principles pertinent to Port Cities. 'Man meets water': Our primordial psyche Man has had a relationship with water since time immemorial. Moving freely from earth to water is an activity which comes naturally to the human being. According to Eastern philosophy, Earth is the most important element. It comprises matter in a solid state, represents stability, physicality and gravity. Water is the second most significant element and represents fluidity, flexibility and adaptability (Ninjutsu.co.uk). Man meets water, in other words, is the moving from one realm to the other. In urban design terms, where 'Man meets water' is the 'in between' space - the interface. This is the area where two worlds come together - an area of interaction, interconnectedness and interrelationship. The area of study is a precinct of Port Louis - the interface between land and sea, as shown in Figure 1.1. The original urban quality of Port Louis has become degraded as a result of post-independence modernisation. The interface has been reshaped spatially and functionally. The original city of Port Louis was founded on the harbour, which was central to social, commercial and residential life. Today, the harbour is segregated from the city fabric. This thesis aims to explore the nature and design principles of places and spaces that lie within this land-water interface in order to formulate an urban design proposal wherein the land is reconnected to the water - an urban intervention for a people-oriented port city.

Port efficiency is a significant element that stimulates port competitiveness and enhances regional development. With increasing international maritime traffic and changing technology in the maritime transport sector, containerisation and enhanced logistic activities, infrastructure might be one of the main determining factors of port competition (Merk & Dang, 2012). Due to the increasing container traffic and the high quality of service required by the shipping lines, Mediterranean container ports are being compelled to enhance port efficiency to improve comparative advantages that will increase cargo traffic and satisfy the customers’ requirements. The Mediterranean Sea is a link point between Europe, Africa and Asia. This research aims to examine the impact of ports' technical efficiency on the improvement of Mediterranean container ports’ competitiveness. The research analyses the competitiveness and the relative efficiency of the top 22 container ports in the Mediterranean basin using a cross-section, panel data and window analysis application of data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the period between 1998 and 2012. The selected 15 year period enables the analysis of Mediterranean container port market dynamics and the benchmarking of the technical efficiency of the selected ports for three consecutive market cycles. This research can be classified as quantitative analytical research. The research follows the concept of the Industrial Organization (IO) and the Structuralism (Harvard school) methodology that analyses the market Structures, Conduct and Performance (SCP) of market players. The study conducts a simultaneous three-stage procedure: in the first stage, the competitiveness of the main container ports in the Mediterranean is analysed through the study of market structure and conduct. Market structure is assessed through measuring and analysing market concentration by using four different methods. These methods are: the K-Firm concentration ratio (K-CR), Hirshman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), the Gini coefficient (GC) and the generalized entropy index. Boston Consultant Group (BCG) matrix is also used to visualize the dynamics between ports in the defined market and assess the ports' competitive position. Market conduct is analysed using shift-share analysis (SSA) to get a thorough understanding of the issue of port traffic development. In the second stage, market performance is analysed through the use of the non-parametric models of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) which estimates the relative efficiency scores and ranking seaports according to their efficiency. Five DEA models are adopted for comparative purpose, the DEA- CCR, DEA-BCC, the Super-Efficiency (A&P, 1993), the sensitivity analysis and slack variable analysis models. In the third stage, to examine the impact of port efficiency on port competitiveness, a number of hypotheses are examined through the use of parametric correlation coefficients (Spearman’s rank order) and Simar and Wilson (2007) procedure to bootstrap the DEA scores with a truncated regression. Using this approach enables more reliable evidence compared to previous studies analysing the efficiency of seaports. The main findings demonstrate that the recent deconcentration tendency of the Mediterranean container port market is due to the increased number of market players which will in turn reshape the market structure, change the container port hierarchy and intensify the competition between ports as the market shifts from oligopoly to pure competition. The research findings also reveal the existence of inefficiency pertaining to the management of container ports in the region, since the total technical efficiency is found to be below 50% on average. This relatively limited technical efficiency of the Mediterranean container ports indicates the need for appropriate capital investments for ports’ infra/superstructure. In particular, those ports whose efficiency is not favoured by some factors such as size, geographical position and socio-economic conditions of the region in which they are located, must adopt suitable reform strategies to promptly improve their efficiency and competitive position. What differentiates this work from previous studies on the subject is that both cross-sectional and panel data have been collected and analysed at the level of individual container ports in the Mediterranean. The study is based on a wide range of methodologies, both parametric and non-parametric, that have ensured the validity of the empirical examination that has been undertaken and the results obtained. The research analysed the Mediterranean container ports competitiveness, benchmarked and ranked their efficiency by considering the Mediterranean in its totality, including South Europe, Middle East and North Africa. The study puts forward a way to assess container port efficiency based on simple, yet validated and meaningful physical efficiency measures.
