Restoration can recover degraded ecosystems and ecosystem services. However, effects of restoration on soil nutrient accrual are difficult to predict, partly because prior land use affects rates of soil nutrient recovery. In tallgrass prairie restorations, land-use legacy effects have not yet been quantified. We investigated topsoil carbon and nitrogen accrual within seven land-use histories: (1) row crop agriculture, (2) pasture, (3) pasture converted from row crops, (4) prairie restored from row crop, (5) prairie restored from old pasture, (6) bison prairie restored from pasture and row crop

The homogenization of freshwater ecosystems and their biological communities has emerged as a prevalent and concerning phenomenon because of the loss of ecosystem multifunctionality. The millions of prairie-pothole wetlands scattered across the Prairie Pothole Region (hereafter PPR) provide critical ecosystem functions at local, regional, and continental scales. However, an estimated loss of 50% of historical wetlands and the widespread conversion of grasslands to cropland make the PPR a heavily modified landscape. Therefore, it is essential to understand the current and potential future stres

Habitat loss has been a primary driver of biodiversity declines throughout the United States. Native prairie ecosystems represent some of the most significant losses in land cover, and subsequently, prairie-dependent species are some of the most imperiled. Therefore, understanding the ecology of species remaining in remnant portions of these ecosystems is important to help manage their populations. Using radio-telemetry, we examined minimum convex polygon (MCP) and 95% kernel density (KD) home ranges of 20 (5 females, 15 males) Ornate Box Turtles (Terrapene ornata) inhabiting two remnant prair

The xeric hypothesis is that bees are more abundant pollinators than anthophilous flies in dry, temperate biomes, and the habitat filtering hypothesis is that differences in the proportions will impact plant community composition because different pollinators favour different floral traits. However, few studies have examined the predictive value of these hypotheses. In particular, differences in plant–pollinator compositions within biomes, such as the Prairie Ecozone, have not been compared. Adaptation drives the diversity of form and function observed in nature and is key to population persistence. Yet, adaptation can be limited by a lack of genetic variation, trade-offs, small population size, and constraints imposed by coevolving interacting species. Highly imperiled Oregon white oak ecosystems are a regional conservation priority of numerous organizations, including Oregon Metro, a regional government serving over one million people in the Portland area. Previously dominant systems in the Pacific Northwest, upland prairie and oak woodlands are now experiencing significant threat, with only 2% remaining in the Willamette Valley in small fragments (Hulse et al. 2002). These fragments are of high conservation value because of the rich biodiversity they support, including rare and endemic species, such as Delphinium leucophaeum (Oregon Depart

Birds are an important component of park ecosystems. They also have a tremendous following among the public, and many parks provide information on the status and long-term trends of bird populations through their interpretive programs. With habitat vanishing, ecosystems being altered, and bird populations declining, we proposed monitoring bird communities on National Park Service lands within the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network. Monitoring breeding birds helps park managers protect birds by providing them with information about the current status and long-term trends in bird populat

Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge (“the Refuge”) in Colorado near Denver, Colorado, has a history (1952-1 989) of producing components for nuclear weapons. The current goal for the area is “to restore and preserve the native prairie ecosystems, provide habitat for migratory and resident wildlife, conserve and protect habitat for Preble’s meadow jumping mouse, and provide research and education opportunities”. The grasslands of the Refuge are surrounded by busy roads to the west (Hwy 93, 18,000 AADT), north (Hwy 128, 4,200 AADT) and east (Indiana St. 7,000 AADT), and there are houses and ass

Fish communities are an important component of aquatic systems and are good bioindicators of ecosystem health. Land use changes in the Midwest have caused sedimentation, erosion, and nutrient loading that degrades and fragments habitat and impairs water quality. Because most small wadeable streams in the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (HTLN) have a relatively small area of their watersheds located within park boundaries, these streams are at risk of degradation due to adjacent land use practices and other anthropogenic disturbances. The 106-acre Yeon Unit of Lewis and Clark National Historic Park lies along the immediate coast eight miles north of Seaside, Oregon. The primary objective of these surveys was to capture the complete lichen and bryophyte flora of the Yeon property with focus on the remnant prairies and the salix swamp, report on any rare species observed or collected, and document the extent and population size of the rare lichen, Pannaria rubiginosa. Surveys were conducted in December 2021 and January 2022. While this report sufficiently characterizes the lichen and bryophyte flora of the Yeon property, it i

The Great Plains of North America are home to some of the world’s largest remaining and most intact grasslands. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) team developed a science-based framework to provide the common vision and coordination necessary to address resource concerns and ecosystem threats across boundaries in the Great Plains. The framework helps guide and target Farm Bill conservation actions spanning multiple states and focal species from 2021-25 in addressing the two most severe and large-scale threats to the Great Plains biome: w
