This article is focuses on Plato's conception of the soul, through which man as a psycho-physical being, lives with the perspective of immortality. The pre-existence and immortality of the soul is in fact the basis of Platonic philosophy. Plato presents the existence of the soul in the Phaidon Dialogue starting from the hypothesis that something called the soul has existence in the form of pre-existence and post-existence and has an intelligible nature, similar to the structure of Eidos (Ideas). The second part of the research considers the transition from ontology to metaphysics, focused on a different perspective given the patristic thinking in which man is created in his divine image, as a personal being composed of body and soul, a synthesis of the intelligible world with the material.

AbstractThe notion that the soul comes into existence simultaneously with the body at the moment of conception was originally introduced into the Patristic discourse as an alternative to the Origenist notion of a pre-existing soul. Yet from the sixth century onwards it was itself regarded as an Origenist tenet. Now it was claimed that only those who believed the soul to be created after the body were truly orthodox. The present article examines the links between this development and the Christological conversies.

AbstractHumans are pure mental substances, that is essentially souls, who have a rich mental life of sensations, thoughts, intentions, and other pure mental events, largely caused by and sometimes causing events in their brains and so in their bodies. God has reason to create humans because humans have a kind of goodness, the ability to choose between good and evil, which God himself does not have. The existence of these causal connections between mental events and brain events requires an enormous number of separate psychophysical laws. It is most improbable that there would be such laws if God had not made them. Each soul has a thisness; it is the particular soul it is quite independently of its mental properties and bodily connections. So no scientific law, concerned only with relations between substances in virtue of their universal properties, could explain why God created this soul rather than that possible soul, and connected it to this body. Yet a rational person often has to choose between equally good alternatives on non-rational grounds; and so there is nothing puzzling about God choosing to create this soul rather than that possible soul. Hence the existence of souls provides a good argument for the existence of God.

The aim of this article is to show what the standpoint of Christianity in first centuries was among pagan conviction and teaching about reincarnation and metempsychosis. The author of this dissertation analyses Tertullian’s treatise On the Soul in context of Plato’ Dialogues. The first part of article puts in order meaning of terms: life after the death, immortality, resurrection, metempsychosis, metensomatosis, palingenesis, reincarnation, pre-existence of the soul. In the second part are discussed most important aspects of Plato’ view on the soul. Then are presented arguments (15) which Tertullian used to criticize Plato’ teaching about ideas and theory of anamnesis and to overthrow theory of reincarnation and metempsychosis. The conclusion takes recollection of standpoint and documents of the Church with reference to discussed matters.

Kevin Corcoran offers an account of how one can be a physicalist about human persons, deny temporal gaps in the existence of persons, and hold that there is an afterlife. I argue that Corcoran's account both violates the necessity of metaphysical identity and implausibly makes an individual's existence dependent on factors wholly extrinsic to the individual. Corcoran's defence is considered, as well as Stephen Davis's suggestions on how an account like Corcoran's can defend itself against these concerns. It is shown, however, that the difficulties remain in full force and, therefore, that Corcoran's account fails to reconcile physicalism, no gappy existence, and an afterlife.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract in English only.This article reviews Kwan Kai Man’s discussion of whether alleged cases of near death experience can give support to the existence of the soul. Kwan’s discussion strikes a balance between scientific explanations of near death experience and traditional religious views of the soul. The existence of the soul has remained a philosophical problem since ancient Greek philosophy. However, Socrates’s attempt to prove the existence of the soul in the Phaedo clearly shows that a purely philosophical approach is inadequate. The existence of the soul is a cross-disciplinary problem that calls for cross-disciplinary investigation. The philosophical contributions of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) to the intellectual legacy of the Italian Renaissance cannot be overstated; Ficino’s name has become synonymous with Florentine Neoplatonism, and his philosophy of love and systematic defence of the immortality of individual souls has made Ficino one of the most recognised and influential thinkers of the fifteenth century. As the translator of the Platonic corpus, and many Neoplatonic authors besides, the Florentine philosopher-priest was well acquainted with, and indeed, had arguably become attracted to antique notions of the origins of the soul. Situating the doctrine of the soul’s pre-mortal existence within Ficino’s thought, particularly in relation to his understanding of spiritual renewal, this thesis aims to provide a re-evaluation of Ficino as a religious thinker and how he understood the relationship between religion and philosophy. The thesis will thereby offer a more nuanced understanding of his contributions to the religious and spiritual life of Quattrocento Florence. Drawing on Ficino’s Platonic Theology, his commentaries of Plato and Plotinus, and his epistolary correspondence, this thesis adopts a framework which combines social, cultural and intellectual historical methods, setting out to not only establish Ficino’s doctrinal interventions, but to place them within the broader context of Renaissance theological reform. In so doing, the thesis aims to contribute to a scholarly reappraisal of how humanistic, vernacular and rhetorical theologies functioned in Florence, and how we as historians understand these theologies. Focussing in particular on the use of rhetoric, language, literary convention, and socio-intellectual networks in the dissemination of Ficinian theology, this thesis intends to provide new perspectives on intellectual exchange in the later decades of the fifteenth century, particularly in relation to the movement of ideas which advocate for religious and theological reform. With a view to examining the broader implications of the dissemination of these ideas, the thesis also reconsiders Ficino’s relationship to the Tuscan vernacular, and its role in his programme of spiritual renewal. This thesis moreover seeks to re-contextualise thinkers in Ficino’s circle, by highlighting their critical role in the religious transformations taking place in the second half of the fifteenth century, and significantly, in the formation of a new religious subculture. Analysing a number of Latin and Tuscan works, this thesis reveals the reproduction of Ficinian ideas on the origins of the soul in connection to contemplation, conversion and mystical union, as well as nuanced modes of communication, and thereby links intellectual exchange to Florentine spiritual renewal. The thesis therefore aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of the intellectual world on the religious, by demonstrating how the re-emergence and incorporation of new streams of thought, as well as the methods used in that effort, came to bear upon the religious and spiritual life. Contending that Ficinian theology fundamentally informed an intellectually driven programme of spiritual renewal and theological reform in Florence during the second half of the fifteenth century and early sixteenth century, this thesis therefore re-contextualises Ficino’s place in our understanding of the intellectual and religious history of Renaissance Florence, and brings an entirely new set of methods, ideas, and characters into this understanding.

Literature ABSTRACT about childhood attitudes on sex roles has shown that sexism has already taken root by the time the child is three years old. By this age, activities children have already learned that different characteristics, and behaviours are expected of males and females. In fact, sex-role stereotyping as a form of sexism is prevalent in the lives of young children. This dissertation focuses on the exploration of the factors that influence the existence or elimination of sexism in education in terms of young children's sex-role stereotyping in preprimary classes. In Western Australia the preprimary stage, i.e. the year the child turns five years old is currently considered to be the child's first experience of schooling. To effect this exploration a project was initiated and planned by this writer who acted as researcher and undertook the roles of participant-observer and interviewer. The project involved the observations of preprimary classrooms and informant interviews. A sociological phenomenologist stance was assumed for the project. In keeping with this stance descriptions of a more wholistic nature are presented in the context of a detailed case study. The development of some conceptualization of the sociological relationships of influence factors was generated. A feature of this conceptualization was the focus on the preprimary class as a total environment and the nature of the educator's role. Although this dissertation relates specifically to preprimary classes and schools in Western Australia, it may have relevance for similar educational settings in other places.

Au dix-neuvième siècle, Joseph Plateau a décrit la disposition géométrique des films de savons. Leur forme s'explique par leur tendance à minimiser leur aire pour atteindre une position d'équilibre. Les mathématiciens ont abstrait le concept de «surface d'aire minimale s'appuyant sur un bord» et ont nommé le problème de minimisation correspondant, «problème de Plateau». Il fait l'objet de différentes formulations qui correspondent à autant de façons de définir la classe des «surfaces bordées par une frontière fixée» et «l'aire» à minimiser. Dans cette thèse, on généralise aux suites quasiminimisantes, la limite faible de suites minimisantes introduite par De Lellis, De Philippis, De Rosa, Ghiraldin et Maggi. On montre qu'une limite faible d'ensembles quasiminimaux est quasiminimal. Ce résultat est analogue au théorème de passage à la limite de David pour la convergence de Hausdorff locale. Notre démonstration est inspirée par celle de David tout en étant plus simple. On déduit une méthode directe pour prouver l'existence de solutions à divers problèmes de Plateau, même avec une frontière libre. On l'applique ensuite à deux variantes du problème de Reifenberg (frontière libre ou fixe) pour tous les groupes de coefficient. D'autre part, on propose une structure pour construire des projections de Federer-Fleming ainsi qu'une nouvelle estimation sur le choix des centres de projection
In the nineteenth century, Joseph Plateau described the geometrical disposition of soap films. Their shape is explained by their tendency to minimize their area to a reach an equilibrium. Mathematicians have abstracted the concept of "surface with minimal area spanning a boundary" and have named the corresponding minimization problem, "Plateau problem". It has different formulations corresponding to as many ways of defining the class of "surfaces spanning a given boundary" and the "area" to minimize. In this thesis, we generalize to quasiminimizing sequences, the weak limit of minimizing sequences introduced by De Lellis, De Philippis, De Rosa, Ghiraldin and Maggi. We show that a weak limit of quasiminimal sets is quasiminimal. This result is analogous to the limiting theorem of David for the local Hausdorff convergence. Our proof is inspired by David's one while being simpler. We deduce a direct method to prove existence of solutions to various Plateau problem, even with a free boundary. We apply it then to two variants of the Reifenberg problem (fixed or free boundary) for all coefficient groups. Furthermore, we propose a structure to build Federer-Fleming projections as well as a new estimate on the choice of projection centers

This thesis examines the pre and post failure deformation behaviour of landslides in cut, fill and natural soil slopes, and of the deformation behaviour of embankment dams. The deformation behaviour of landslides and embankment dams have been analysed from a database of case studies from a number of classes of slope (and dam) and material type. The database included some 450 landslides in cuts, fills and natural slopes, and some 170 embankment dams. For landslides in soil slopes, methods and guidelines have been developed for use in the analysis, evaluation and prediction of the pre and post failure deformation behaviour. They take into consideration the factors influencing and the mechanics controlling the deformation behaviour for the classes of slope and material types, which are different for pre and post failure. Pre-failure deformations are largely controlled by the effective stress conditions within the slope, changes in the boundary conditions and the response of the soil to those changes in boundary conditions. Whether the soil, under the effective stress conditions imposed within the slope, is contractive (and saturated or near saturated) or dilative on shearing, has a significant influence on the pre failure deformation behaviour. The post failure deformation behaviour is strongly influenced by the mechanics of failure (including whether the soil is contractive or dilative on shearing), the source area slope angle, the downslope geometry, the orientation of the surface of rupture, the material properties and slide volume. Guidelines are presented for prediction of 'rapid' and 'slow' post failure velocity. For embankment dams, methods and guidelines have been developed for evaluation and prediction of the deformation behaviour during and post construction for selected embankment types. They take into consideration the influence of material type and placement methods, material strength and compressibility properties, embankment zoning geometry, embankment height, and reservoir operation, amongst other factors. Guidelines have been developed to assist in the identification of 'abnormal' deformation behaviour, which can be related to internal deformations or a marginal stability condition and the onset to failure.

The aim of this thesis is to explicate Barth's doctrine of the pre-existence of Jesus Christ in the Church Dogmatics. The concept of pre-existence in general has been widely misunderstood in recent times, and has led to misunderstanding and prejudice against Barth's concept of pre-existence in particular. My aim is twofold: a) To investigate comprehensively the doctrine of the pre-existence of Jesus Christ, also referred to by Barth as the eternal Logos ensarkos, or the humanity of God; b) To demonstrate how the doctrine variously functions in Barth's Church Dogmatics. I have brought in Pannenberg as a dialogue partner to show how their different theologies have given rise to different concepts of pre-existence. I have explored the concept of pre-existence in relation to Barth's understanding of the doctrines of a) revelation, b) election, c) time and eternity, and d) reconciliation. In each of these categories I have shown how the concept of pre-existence functions, bringing in Pannenberg by way of contrast. It is my contention that Barth's concept of pre-existence refers to: a) a self-constitution of God in the second mode of God's being, as the eternal Logos ensarkos; and b) that Jesus Christ is really, actually (as opposed to ideally) spiritually present to those who lived prior to the historical instantiation of Jesus Christ. In Barth's theology the concept of pre-existence serves to: a) emphasise God's love of humanity, and the degree of which God regards humanity; b) stress that the covenant between God and humanity is an eternal convenant; c) emphasise that Jesus Christ is the electing God, as well as the elected man; d) function as a political corrective: it stresses the dignity and sanctity of human life; e) function as a theological corrective against natural theology, and theological dualism.

Cette thèse porte sur l'étude de plusieurs problèmes paraboliques non-linéaires sous les conditions au bord dynamiques. Premièrement, on considère l'équation de Burgers dans un domaine borné réel. On étudie les propriétés des solutions de cette équation lorsqu'on impose des conditions dynamiques sur le bord et lorsque la donnée initiale est positive. En utilisant des méthodes de comparaison, on s'intéresse à l'ordre de croissance et au point d'explosion des solutions régulières via une étude du profil de la solution. Ensuite, on étudie les solutions stationnaires de l'équation de Burgers, dans laquelle on ajoute un paramètre lambda. A l'aide d'une méthode de plan des phases, on démontre l'existence de solutions stationnaires sous différentes conditions au bord (Dirichlet et Neumann). Nous observons qu'en faisant varier le paramètre lambda, on provoque une bifurcation dans le plan des phases, ce qui se traduit de profonds changements dans les résultats d'existence des solutions stationnaires de l'équation de Burgers paramétrée sous les diverses conditions au bord considérées. Par le biais d'une technique basée sur l'étude de norme L-1 adéquates, nous démontrons des résultats d'explosion pour les solutions non-stationnaires de l'équation de Burgers paramétrée lorsque l'on se place dans un domaine réel non-borné. Finalement, on étudie le phénomène de Fujita. A l'aide des méthodes de comparaison, on montre que le phénomène de Fujita, connu dans le cas des conditions de Dirichlet et de Neumann, reste vrai sous les conditions au bord dynamiques. Adaptant notre technique, on prouve que ce phénomène est également vrai sous les conditions au bord de Robin.

Анотація:

The Tay people represent an ethnic minority in the mountainous north of Vietnam. As do Shaman rituals in all regions, the Shaman of the Tay people in Vietnam exhibit uniqueness in their languages and accommodation of their society’s world view through their ‘Then’ rituals. The Then rituals require an integration of many artistically positioned and framed elements, including language (poetry, vows, chanting, the dialogue in the ritual), music (singing, accompaniment), and dance. This paper investigates The Art of Speaking of the Tay Shaman, through their Then rituals, which include use of language to describe the imaginary journey of the Shaman into the three-tiered world (Muong fa - Heaven region (Thien phu); Muong Din - Mountain region (Nhac phu); Muong Nam - Water region (combination of Thuy phu and Dia phu) to describe dealings with deities and demons, and to describe the phenomenon of possession. The methodic framework of the paper thus includes discussions of in the comparison between the concept of the three-storey world in the Then ritual of the Tay people with the concept of Tam Tu phu in the Len dong ceremony of the Kinh in Vietnam. Thereby, it clearly shows the concept of Tay people of the universe, the world of gods, demons, the existence of the soul and the body, and the existence of human soul after death. The study contributes to Linguistics and Anthropology in that it observes and describes the world views of a Northern Vietnamese ethnicity, and their negotiation with spirituality, through languages of both a spiritualistic medium and society.

Moldovan cuisine is a real treasure with tasty miracles, where the hearty soul of our people rules. These are the dishes generously and proudly served to all guests, who want to get familiarized with our country and culture. Moldovan cuisine is a part of the culture of the Republic of Moldova. Its diversity is due to the rich natural opportunities of our country. Grapes, fruit, vegetables, cattle breeding and aviculture – all such riches are successfully used in national cuisine. If speaking about traditional cuisine, we cannot but mention such dishes as Moldovan cozonac (sweet leavened bread), Moldovan pasca (Easter bread), sarmale (stuffed grape leaves or stuffed cabbage), zeama de gaina (sour chicken soup), alivanca (custard tart), Moldovan turta (cake), turta cu mac (poppyseed cake), and so on. The traditional dishes of the Republic of Moldova, which were forgotten in the mists of time, are the subject-matter of interest in this thesis paper, since they are less studied but still very valuable. The realized onsite study allowed us stating the existence of a large-scale range of recipes of alivanca, i.e. a peasant dessert, which is specific to Moldova, including: custard tart with sheep cheese (branza), custard tart with whey cheese (urda), custard tart with pork rinds (jumari), custard tart with dill and bunch onion, custard tart with nettle, custard tart with stevia, custard tart with garden orache, custard tart with chervil, custard tart with pumpkin, sweet custard tart.

Psychoanalysis is a branch of science that focuses on the subconscious and unconscious aspects of human beings. “When it comes to the human soul, it is seen that almost the entire human ego is based on psychology.” (Emre, 2006: 16). The psychoanalytic literary theory is a theory that tries to reveal the unconscious and subconscious aspects of the artist in general, and is shaped on the theories of Sigmund Freud. This theory has a feature that reflects the bonds between the identity of the artist and his work. “Until Freud, the origin of human behavior was generally associated with physiology. After long studies, Freud reveals that the unconscious is as effective as physiological conditions and disorders on the basis of human behavior. (Cebeci, 2009: 72). Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, one of the important names of Turkish poetry in the Republican period, is generally known for his mystical and metaphysical poems. There are many uses in his poems that are suitable for psychoanalytic analysis. In the poems of Kısakürek, "subconscious and image, rebirth, sense of emptiness, self-complexity, struggle for existence" etc. elements are included. Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests were performed using the pipe section buried in a clay type of soil with the pH adjusted to near-neutral range. Pipe specimens with various sizes of fatigue pre-cracks ahead of artifical notch tips on the outer surface were subjected to cyclic loading tests. Maximum level of hoop stress was 105% SMYS, and R-value (Ratio of minimum load to maximum load) was 0.5. Growth of cracks was observed from the fatigue crack tips. Fractographic and metallographic examination has confirmed the quasi-cleavage nature of the transgranular SCC that is typically observed in near-neutral pH SCC. Crack depth measurement using DCPD method revealed the relatively high crack growth rate up to 10−5 mm/s. Metallographic examinations showed the existence of many micro-cracks associated with MnS inclusions in the highly strained field ahead of the initial crack tips. The relatively high crack growth rate may be caused by MnS inclusions. The loading rate, dJ/dt, was calculated for each crack condition in order to correlate qualitatively the crack growth rate with the loading rate. J-integral was calculated through non-linear FEM analyses for semi-elliptical cracks based on the stress-strain relationships obtained from the tensile tests using the same X60 steel specimen. Linear relationship was then obtained between the crack growth rate and the loading rate, and therefore the possibility to predict crack growth rates for various loading condition in the field was demonstrated.

Abstracts Conductor setting depth is critical to provide structural support for next drilling sections. The shoe strength must suffice for drilling ahead and avoid any washout and unstable zone. The objective is to design and run conductor smoothly in regards to engineering and operation aspect. Multidisciplinary approach including geotechnical, drilling engineering, and structure, was implemented during planning strategy. The pre-determined conductor setting depth was defined on the maximum mud weight to be used during drilling surface hole section in accordance to the formation strength below the conductor with the purpose of not inducing losses to the formation. Lateral distance between conductor and platform jacket pile was also analyzed to secure the jacket integrity. Anti-collision analysis was performed to prevent collision due to the existence of production well in same platform. Conductor pipe size and specification with some feature was defined to withstand under anticipated load and environment. To determine the way to achieve target depth and the suitability of hammer type, drivability analysis was performed with various anticipated condition. Considering shallow refusal depth, drill and drive was required to reduce shaft friction of soil. Another environmental challenge arise during conductor operation was unable to contain fluid and cutting returns from clean-out process causing return to cover part of the production platform facility. Some of technology were planned to mitigate this challenge. By having comprehensive conductor design, the conductor pipe in all four wells drilled has been successfully installed without any problem on platform jacket integrity and subsequent drilling section. This approach also enabled to efficiency of conductor installation where the number of clean-out and driving run could be reduced. The overflow return challenge could be fully contained by utilizing selfdesigned equipment. The overall operation days of conductor has shown improvement with 1.02 saving days on the last well which equivalent to amount of cost saving around USD 203,500.

In his book The Long Truce (Spence Publishing, 2001) the late A. J. Conyers argues that tolerance, as practiced in western democracies, is not a public virtue; it is a political strat- egy employed to establish power and guarantee profits. Tolerance, of course, seemed to be a reasonable response to the religious wars of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but tolerance based upon indifference to all values except political power and materialism relegated ultimate questions of meaning to private life. Conyers offers another model for tolerance based upon values and resources already resident in pre-Reformation Christianity. In this paper, we consider Conyer’s case against the modern, secular form of tolerance and its current practice. We examine his attempt to reclaim the practice of Christian tolerance based upon humility, hospitality and the “powerful fact” of the incarnation. Furthermore, we bring the late Conyers into dialog with Fethullah Gülen, a Muslim scholar, prolific writer and the source of inspiration for a transnational civil society movement. We explore how both Conyers and Gülen interpret their scriptures in order to fashion a theology and politi- cal ideology conducive to peaceful co-existence. Finally, because Gülen’s identity has been formed within the Sufi tradition, we reflect on the spiritual resources within Sufi spirituality that make dialog and toleration key values for him. Conyers locates various values, practices and convictions in the Christian message that pave the way for authentic toleration. These include humility, trust, reconciliation, the interrelat- edness of all things, the paradox of power--that is, that strength is found in weakness and greatness in service—hope, the inherent goodness of creation, and interfaith dialog. Conyers refers to this latter practice as developing “the listening heart” and “the open soul.” In his writings and oral addresses, Gülen prefers the term hoshgoru (literally, “good view”) to “tolerance.” Conceptually, the former term indicates actions of the heart and the mind that include empathy, inquisitiveness, reflection, consideration of the dialog partner’s context, and respect for their positions. The term “tolerance” does not capture the notion of hoshgoru. Elsewhere, Gülen finds even the concept of hoshgoru insufficient, and employs terms with more depth in interfaith relations, such as respect and an appreciation of the positions of your dialog partner. The resources Gülen references in the context of dialog and empathic acceptance include the Qur’an, the prophetic tradition, especially lives of the companions of the Prophet, the works of great Muslim scholars and Sufi masters, and finally, the history of Islamic civilization. Among his Qur’anic references, Gülen alludes to verses that tell the believers to represent hu- mility, peace and security, trustworthiness, compassion and forgiveness (The Qur’an, 25:63, 25:72, 28:55, 45:14, 17:84), to avoid armed conflicts and prefer peace (4:128), to maintain cordial relationships with the “people of the book,” and to avoid argumentation (29:46). But perhaps the most important references of Gülen with respect to interfaith relations are his readings of those verses that allow Muslims to fight others. Gülen positions these verses in historical context to point out one by one that their applicability is conditioned upon active hostility. In other words, in Gülen’s view, nowhere in the Qur’an does God allow fighting based on differences of faith. An important factor for Gülen’s embracing views of empathic acceptance and respect is his view of the inherent value of the human. Gülen’s message is essentially that every human person exists as a piece of art created by the Compassionate God, reflecting aspects of His compassion. He highlights love as the raison d’etre of the universe. “Love is the very reason of existence, and the most important bond among beings,” Gülen comments. A failure to approach fellow humans with love, therefore, implies a deficiency in our love of God and of those who are beloved to God. The lack of love for fellow human beings implies a lack of respect for this monumental work of art by God. Ultimately, to remain indifferent to the conditions and suffering of fellow human beings implies indifference to God himself. While advocating love of human beings as a pillar of human relations, Gülen maintains a balance. He distinguishes between the love of fellow human beings and our attitude toward some of their qualities or actions. Our love for a human being who inflicts suffering upon others does not mean that we remain silent toward his violent actions. On the contrary, our very love for that human being as a human being, as well as our love of those who suffer, necessitate that we participate actively in the elimination of suffering. In the end we argue that strong resonances are found in the notion of authentic toleration based on humility advocated by Conyers and the notion of hoshgoru in the writings of Gülen.

Анотація:

We exploit mobility restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic to show the existence of a larger potential demand for telemedicine services in a middle-income developing country. We find an increase in the number of calls by 230 percent during the pandemic. The effects were mostly driven by older individuals with pre-existing conditions who used the service for internal medicine consultations. After the mobility restrictions were lifted, the demand for telemedicine services remained high.

Biotechnology offers new ways to use biological processes as environmental sensors. For example, in soil microbial fuel cells (MFCs), soil electro-genic microorganisms are recruited to electrodes embedded in soil and produce electricity (measured by voltage) through the breakdown of substrate. Because the voltage produced by the electrogenic microbes is a function of their environment, we hypothesize that the voltage may change in a characteristic manner given environmental disturbances, such as the contamination by exogenous material, in a way that can be modelled and serve as a diagnostic. In this study, we aimed to statistically analyze voltage from soil MFCs injected with urea as a proxy for gross contamination. Specifically, we used 𝘬-means clustering to discern between voltage output before and after the injection of urea. Our results showed that the 𝘬-means algorithm recognized 4–6 distinctive voltage regions, defining unique periods of the MFC voltage that clearly identify pre- and postinjection and other phases of the MFC lifecycle. This demonstrates that 𝘬-means can identify voltage patterns temporally, which could be further improve the sensing capabilities of MFCs by identifying specific regions of dissimilarity in voltage, indicating changes in the environment.

Climate change does not respect national boundaries or distinguish between big and small polluters. It is one of the truly global problems humanity faces today. In spite of this, there is a reluctance to believe in the existence of climate change even though the scientific consensus is that human influence bears much of the responsibility. In less than 200 years, human activity has increased the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases by some 50 percent relative to pre-industrial levels, leading to an increase in global temperatures. 1 Yet contrarian perspectives abound, given prominence by the media and promoted by fossil fuel lobbies. One such example is Dennis Avery and Fred Singer’s Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, a book whose premise is that “human-emitted CO2 has played only a minor role” in contributing to climate change.

Анотація:

In this paper an isotropic hardening elastoplastic constitutive model for structured soils is applied to the simulation of a standard CPTu test in a saturated soft structured clay. To allow for the extreme deformations experienced by the soil during the penetration process, the model is formulated in a fully geometric non-linear setting, based on: i) the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into an elastic and a plastic part; and, ii) on the existence of a free energy function to define the elastic behaviour of the soil. The model is equipped with two bonding-related internal variables which provide a macroscopic description of the effects of clay structure. Suitable hardening laws are employed to describe the structure degradation associated to plastic deformations. The strain-softening associated to bond degradation usually leads to strain localization and consequent formation of shear bands, whose thickness is dependent on the characteristics of the microstructure (e.g, the average grain size). Standard local constitutive models are incapable of correctly capturing this phenomenon due to the lack of an internal length scale. To overcome this limitation, the model is framed using a non-local approach by adopting volume averaged values for the internal state variables. The size of the neighbourhood over which the averaging is performed (characteristic length) is a material constant related to the microstructure which controls the shear band thickness. This extension of the model has proven effective in regularizing the pathological mesh dependence of classical finite element solutions in the post-localization regime. The results of numerical simulations, conducted for different soil permeabilities and bond strengths, show that the model captures the development of plastic deformations induced by the advancement of the cone tip; the destructuration of the clay associated with such plastic deformations; the space and time evolution of pore water pressure as the cone tip advances. The possibility of modelling the CPTu tests in a rational and computationally efficient way opens a promising new perspective for their interpretation in geotechnical site investigations.

Анотація:

The University of A Coruña is partner of the GRAZELIFE LIFE preparatory project (LIFE 18 PRE/NL002). We contributed to the main aim of the project of promoting sustainable grazing by large herbivores, with the study of the particular case of Galician wild ponies as a natural grazing semi-wild land use model, and alternative land uses of short and long-term afforestation, extensive grazing and abandonment. We selected two sub-areas in Galicia representing different situations in dominant land uses and the wild ponies’ system. Xistral, in the north, is a protected Natura 2000 site covered by wet heaths and bogs, ponies are owned by commoners that are mainly cattle farmers. Groba, in the south, is a drier area with dominance of forestry use and high frequency of wildfires, where ponies are owned by non-professional farmers. We performed twenty personal semi-structured interviews with pony owners, land owners and related experts from different sectors (afforestation, tourism, conservation NGOs), and performed two focus groups. We discussed topics such as their relation with ponies, the challenges they face, their demands and feelings on the policies, including CAP subsidies or compensations for wolf attacks, and their expectations for the future. In the field, we selected representative stands of each land use model in each sub-area and performed a systematic record of plant species, measures of plant biomass, and collected soil samples. Measures were used as proxies of biodiversity changes, carbon storage and wildfire risk, to compare between the selected models.
