To discover why parasuicides who resolved their difficulties repeated self-harm within three-month follow-up at the same rate as those who had not resolved problems, a group of 30 repeaters was compared with 156 non-repeaters. The repeaters had a history of more frequent episodes, beginning younger. Their problems were more severe, the acts of self-harm potentially less lethal. They experienced greater feelings of externally directed hostility, powerlessness, and ‘normlessness'. A constellation of nine variables correctly predicted 81.5% of the repeaters and 77.5% of the non-repeaters. At follow-up the non-repeaters had improved on several parameters but the repeaters were essentially unchanged. The resolvers among the subgroup of repeaters were more like repeaters in the overall sample than the resolvers, which may explain why some parasuicides repeat in spite of resolving their problems.

Local repetitions in genomes are called tandem repeats. A tandem repeat contains multiple, but slightly different copies of a repeated unit. It changes over time as the copies are altered by mutations, when additional copies are created by amplification of an existing copy, or when a copy is removed by contraction. Theses changes let tandem repeats evolve dynamically. From this statement follow two problems. TANDEM REPEAT HISTORY aims at recovering the history of amplifications and mutations that produced the tandem repeat sequence given as input. Given the tandem repeat sequences at the same genomic location in two individuals and a cost function for amplifications, contractions, and mutations, the purpose of TANDEM REPEAT ALLELE ALIGNMENT is to find an alignment of the sequences having minimal cost. We present a survey of these two problems that allow to investigate evolutionary mechanisms at work in tandem repeats.

How does feasibility of efficient repeated trade depend on the features of the environment such as persistence of values, private information about their evolution, or trading frequency? We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for efficient, unsubsidized, and voluntary trade, which implies that efficient contracting requires sufficient congruence of expectations. This translates to bounds on persistence of values and on private information about their evolution, and distinguishes increasing patience from more frequent interaction; the latter need not facilitate efficiency even when the former does. We also discuss second-best mechanisms and extend the characterization to general dynamic collective choice problems. (JEL C73, D82, D86)

Background. While recent studies have found problem-solving impairments in individuals who engage in deliberate self-harm (DSH), few studies have examined repeaters and non-repeaters separately. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether specific types of problem-solving are associated with repeated DSH.Method. As part of the WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Suicidal Behaviour, 836 medically treated DSH patients (59% repeaters) from 12 European regions were interviewed using the European Parasuicide Study Interview Schedule (EPSIS II) approximately 1 year after their index episode. The Utrecht Coping List (UCL) assessed habitual responses to problems.Results. Factor analysis identified five dimensions – Active Handling, Passive-Avoidance, Problem Sharing, Palliative Reactions and Negative Expression. Passive-Avoidance – characterized by a pre-occupation with problems, feeling unable to do anything, worrying about the past and taking a gloomy view of the situation, a greater likelihood of giving in so as to avoid difficult situations, the tendency to resign oneself to the situation, and to try to avoid problems – was the problem-solving dimension most strongly associated with repetition, although this association was attenuated by self-esteem.Conclusions. The outcomes of the study indicate that treatments for DSH patients with repeated episodes should include problem-solving interventions. The observed passivity and avoidance of problems (coupled with low self-esteem) associated with repetition suggests that intensive therapeutic input and follow-up are required for those with repeated DSH.

Recent work on counter-insurgency, client states, foreign aid, and proxy wars uses a principal–agent framework to study the principal’s ability to induce an agent to exert effort on the principal’s behalf. This work broadly emphasizes the moral hazard problem and the actors’ limited commitment power. The latter is usually addressed through the logic of repeated games in which reneging on an agreement triggers future punishment. This study analyzes a related incentive problem that undermines the principal’s ability to induce an agent to exert effort on its behalf. The repeated-game’s enforcement mechanism tends to break down if the principal is trying to get the agent to resolve a problem that, if resolved, (i) creates an ongoing problem for the agent and (ii) simultaneously significantly reduces the agent’s ability to impose future costs on the principal. The principal cannot induce the agent to exert much effort in these circumstances, and the problem persists.

The eigenvalues of a gyroscopic system depend on a parameter, and the system may become unstable when eigenvalues collide. For continuous systems, the eigenvalue problem is represented by a matrix with transcendental elements. A method is developed to determine the value of the parameter that causes eigenvalues to collide. The method is implemented using a certain formula for the determination of the derivative of a matrix determinant without the use of symbolic expansion of the determinant. This formula simplifies the computational task considerably. Applications of the method are demonstrated by problems involving buckling by circulatory forces and oscillations of a gyroscopic system.

The article covers the issues of organization of rehabilitation at the post-hospital stage for patients who have suffered an acute cerebrovascular accident. According to statistics, almost half of patients who have suffered an acute cerebrovascular accident have a risk of a repeated stroke in the next five years of life against the background of manifestations of post-stroke depression. It is established that in these cases, one of the causes of repeated cerebrovascular accidents is the failure of patients to take prescribed antidepressant medications. The article analyzes two groups of patients who were observed in dynamics up to 6–12 months after the rehabilitation treatment in the Department of Neurology of the hospital. The main group included the patients with diagnosed post-stroke depression. The control group included patients without signs of clinically apparent depression. As a result of a retrospective study, it was found that 85,7 % of patients in the main group who had a repeated stroke did not adhere to the regime for taking antidepressant medications. Among the patients who continue to take antidepressants, there have not been repeated cases of cerebral circulatory disorders. Therefore, timely detection and correction of post-stroke depression in the early stroke recovery period and maintaining the principle of continuity at the post-hospital stage of rehabilitation contributes not only to the recovery of neurological deficit, but also reduces the risk of developing repeated disorders of cerebral circulation.

Verbal problems that involve multiplication and division are difficult for children to solve. Many of these difficulties arise because of their limited under tanding of these arithmetic operations. Their experience with the different kinds of situation that call for these operations is also limited. At the same time, these problem cannot be categorized easily because the situation that require these operations are varied. Nonetheless. multiplication is often taught only as “repeated addition” and division only as “repeated subtraction.” Children must have specific instruction in all the situation that require multiplication and division as arithmetic operations if they are to apply them successfully to verbal problems.

This experiment was designed to investigate the development of problem-solving strategies by subjects in a sentence-verification paradigm which permitted repeated exposure to problems of the same type. While it was predicted that subjects would show a general improvement across trials as a function of repeated exposure to similar sets of problems, nevertheless it was predicted that some types of problem would show little or no improvement across trials, while other problems would show significant improvement as the subjects determined more efficient strategies to use to aid in rapid solutions. The results illustrate that certain types of sentence-verification tasks allow the development of efficient strategies which significantly decrease reaction times across trials, while other problem types produce uniform response rates across problem sets with negligible improvement as a function of practice. The results ate interpreted in terms of the relative availability of problem-solving strategies for the different types of verification task.

Purpose Many Japanese hay fever (HF) sufferers wear a hygienic face mask to prevent pollen inhalation, but most find it very uncomfortable. The purpose of this paper is to identify the problems associated with mask wearing through repeated surveys. This information can be used in the improved design of a hygienic face mask that can be worn without discomfort by HF sufferers. Design/methodology/approach In 2009 (n=1,519), 2012 (n=2,994), and 2015 (n=3,213), repeated surveys of university students were conducted. HF sufferers were queried regarding symptoms, countermeasures, and problems associated with wearing a hygienic face mask. Holistic perspectives for each year were obtained by a co-occurrence analysis of the aggregated data. The triplet co-occurrence of specific problems was compared among the surveys using the χ2 test. Temporary and contemporary co-occurrence relationships were also determined. Findings Most Japanese university students with HF wore a hygienic face mask. In each survey, the most common problems associated with mask use were related to its thermal, hygroscopic, and air-flow properties. Contemporary problems with co-occurrence relationships were “humidity,” “breathing difficulty,” and “mist over eyeglasses” for males and, “humidity,” “breathing difficulty,” and “make-up coming off” for females. Originality/value The results of this study will contribute to improving hygienic face mask design. The co-occurrence of contemporary problems related to mask use was identified by comparing the results obtained in each year. The thermal, hygroscopic, and air flow properties of the mask cause these problems, and the air gap between the mask and the wearer’s face influences the inherent physical properties of the mask. To measure the air gap, a suitable hydrostatic pressure-balanced experimental method was applied, and the data were demonstrated experimentally.

Crowdsourcing markets have emerged as a popular platform for matching available workers with tasks to complete. The payment for a particular task is typically set by the task's requester, and may be adjusted based on the quality of the completed work, for example, through the use of "bonus" payments. In this paper, we study the requester's problem of dynamically adjusting quality-contingent payments for tasks. We consider a multi-round version of the well-known principal-agent model, whereby in each round a worker makes a strategic choice of the effort level which is not directly observable by the requester. In particular, our formulation significantly generalizes the budget-free online task pricing problems studied in prior work. We treat this problem as a multi-armed bandit problem, with each "arm" representing a potential contract. To cope with the large (and in fact, infinite) number of arms, we propose a new algorithm, AgnosticZooming, which discretizes the contract space into a finite number of regions, effectively treating each region as a single arm. This discretization is adaptively refined, so that more promising regions of the contract space are eventually discretized more finely. We analyze this algorithm, showing that it achieves regret sublinear in the time horizon and substantially improves over non-adaptive discretization (which is the only competing approach in the literature). Our results advance the state of art on several different topics: the theory of crowdsourcing markets, principal-agent problems, multi-armed bandits, and dynamic pricing.

We analyzed use of the commutative property for solving multiplication problems by children who learn about multiplication in schools and by street vendors who solve multiplication problems through repeated addition. Subjects were Brazilian street vendors with irregular school attendance, who had received no, or very little, school instruction on multiplication, and 1st- to 3rd-grade Brazilian school children. Results from 2 studies show that use of commutativity to solve multiplication problems is closely related to use of multiplication. Street sellers who rely exclusively on repeated addition to solve such problems may, however, use multiplicative commutativity if it represents a clear reduction in the number of computational steps needed to reach a solution. But their justifications for its use are often based on knowledge about multiplication.

Combinatorial optimization assumes that all parameters of the optimization problem, e.g. the weights in the objective function, are fixed. Often, these weights are mere estimates and increasingly machine learning techniques are used to for their estimation. Recently, Smart Predict and Optimize (SPO) has been proposed for problems with a linear objective function over the predictions, more specifically linear programming problems. It takes the regret of the predictions on the linear problem into account, by repeatedly solving it during learning. We investigate the use of SPO to solve more realistic discrete optimization problems. The main challenge is the repeated solving of the optimization problem. To this end, we investigate ways to relax the problem as well as warm-starting the learning and the solving. Our results show that even for discrete problems it often suffices to train by solving the relaxation in the SPO loss. Furthermore, this approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approach of Wilder, Dilkina, and Tambe. We experiment with weighted knapsack problems as well as complex scheduling problems, and show for the first time that a predict-and-optimize approach can successfully be used on large-scale combinatorial optimization problems.

Abstract Context.—The Laboratory Accreditation Program of the College of American Pathologists monitors the performance of its subscribers in proficiency testing (PT). Failure to perform as expected prompts the program to query the laboratory. Objective.—To determine whether laboratories are correcting apparent problems when contacted by the program about repeatedly unacceptable performance in a diagnostic test. Design.—Retrospective analysis of 1 year's records (2002–2003) from the College's Proficiency Testing Exception Summary correspondence, which identifies clusters of PT failures. The analysis focused on those laboratories in which the Proficiency Testing Exception Summary algorithm identified repeated failures over 3 or 4 testing events; PT performance is monitored as a condition of accreditation. During 1 survey year, approximately 6300 accredited laboratories collectively tested approximately 1 205 000 analytes and submitted results to their PT providers on more than 3 500 000 PT challenges. During the period of observation, 14 085 Proficiency Testing Exception Summary reports were mailed to participants. Educational materials were included to help laboratories identify and correct each PT failure. Results.—There were only 1304 cases of repeated PT failures after the initial correspondence from the accreditation program (9.3%). Of these, there were only 119 cases of unsatisfactory results on the subsequent PT event (9.1%). All systematic problems were resolved by the conclusion of the third round of correspondence. Conclusions.—Accredited laboratories generally perform well in proficiency testing. Identification of clusters of PT failures by the accreditation provider can help those laboratories having analytic difficulties to investigate and correct the problems.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is currently performed as a therapeutic strategy for the management of the cervical carotid artery stenosis. In our clinic, PTA was performed successfully in all 24 patients initially. Restenosis was observed in 4 of 24 patients who received 3 to 6 month follow-up angiography. Repeated PTA was performed in 4 patients, 3 of whom were successfully treated, while severe wall dissection occurred in 1 patient. Furthermore, asymptomatic re-restenosis was noted in 1 of 4 patients who received repeated PTA. Dissection was noted in 5 of 28 procedures, which occurred more often in the patients with calcified or restenotic lesions. These results suggest that stenting or emergent surgery should be prepared in PTA of the carotid artery stenosis to avoid major complications, especially when the patients have calcified or restenotic lesions.

Background. The use of cannabis and other illicit drugs (OIDs) and their co-morbid misuse are frequently reported in the literature. Correlated vulnerabilities and causal or gateway influences have been implicated in this association. We investigated the source of this co-morbidity between cannabis use (experimentation, early and repeated use, and problems) and OID experimentation and problems using genetic models proposed by Neale and Kendler (American Journal of Human Genetics 1995, 57, 935–953).Method. In a sample of 4152 same-sex male and female adult Australian twin individuals, we fit 13 genetically informative models of co-morbidity to data on experimentation, early use, repeated use of cannabis and co-morbid OID experimentation, and to abuse/dependence (A/D) problems with cannabis and OIDs.Results. Model-fitting results suggest that common genetic, shared and unique environmental factors are responsible for the association between cannabis experimentation, early use, repeated use and A/D problems and OID experimentation or problems. The liability causation model, which is a reduced form of the correlated vulnerabilities model, also fit very well. In women, we found evidence for high-risk cannabis experimenters and repeated users to be at increased risk for OID experimentation, despite being below the risk threshold on the liability distribution for OID experimentation (extreme multiformity).Conclusions. Co-morbid cannabis and OID use and misuse are due partly to a common predisposition to substance use disorders. Putative causal effects could not be ruled out. These models warrant further research, so that features of the correlated vulnerabilities model and the gateway models can be studied jointly in a single series of adaptive nested models.

A new model for predicting the performance of a subgrade during soil compaction by rollers as a function of contact pressure and the strength characteristics of soils was developed. The model can be used to develop improved methods of pavement design, considering that the accumulation of plastic strains may continue under additional load repetitions or may cease to increase with time, indicating adaptation or shakedown conditions. To develop the mechanistic model of a subgrade, the homogeneous semi-infinite elastoplastic half-space under repeated loading was considered. By using a Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the boundary loads for which shakedown conditions or the steady state will be attained were determined. The residual horizontal normal stresses in the half-space were calculated and were shown to be in agreement with the measured distribution with depth. The theoretical and experimental results as they apply to soil compaction and pavement design problems are discussed. The required compaction contact pressure and the thickness of the compacted zone are estimated. The structural pavement design approach, considering residual normal stresses in a subgrade, is presented.

This paper discusses a nonstationary, heterogeneous Markov model designed to estimate entry and exit transition probabilities at the micro level from a time series of independent cross-sectional samples with a binary outcome variable. The model has its origins in the work of Moffitt and shares features with standard statistical methods for ecological inference. We outline the methodological framework proposed by Moffitt and present several extensions of the model to increase its potential application in a wider array of research contexts. We also discuss the relationship with previous lines of related research in political science. The example illustration uses survey data on American presidential vote intentions from a five-wave panel study conducted by Patterson in 1976. We treat the panel data as independent cross sections and compare the estimates of the Markov model with both dynamic panel parameter estimates and the actual observations in the panel. The results suggest that the proposed model provides a useful framework for the analysis of transitions in repeated cross sections. Open problems requiring further study are discussed.

Historically, the idea of reaching consensus through repeated averaging was introduced by De Groot for a structured time-invariant and synchronous environment. Since that time, the consensus, which is the most ubiquitous phenomenon of multi-agent systems, becomes popular in the various scientific fields such as biology, physics, control engineering and social science. In this paper, we give an overview of the recent development of applications of quadratic stochastic operators to nonlinear consensus problems. We also present some refinement and improvement of the previous results.

Arithmetical operations were assumed to remain attached to primitive behavioral models that influence tacitly the choice of an operation even after the learner has had solid formal-algorithmic training. The model for multiplication was conjectured to be repeated addition, and two primitive models (partitive and quotative) were seen as linked to division. A total of 623 pupils enrolled in 13 Italian schools (Grades 5, 7, and 9) were asked to choose the operation needed to solve 26 multiplication and division word problems. Violations by the numerical data of the constraints imposed by the assumed tacit models (for instance, when the operator was a decimal number) constituted particular sources of difficulty at all three grade levels. The findings seemed to confirm the impact of the repeated addition model on multiplication and of the partitive model on division. The quotative division model influenced the pupils' choices only at the ninth-grade level.

Swift solving of geoacoustic inverse problems strongly depends on the application of a global optimization scheme. Given a particular inverse problem, this work aims to answer the questions how to select an appropriate metaheuristic search strategy, and how to configure it for optimal performance. Four state-of-the-art metaheuristics have been selected for this study; these are simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, and differential evolution. To make a careful comparison, each of these metaheuristic optimizers has been configured for two real-world geoacoustic inverse problems. The influence and sensitivity of specific performance parameters have been studied by analysis of repeated problem-solving. It is concluded that a proper configuration and tuning is just as important as selection of the best optimization scheme. The application in this work is geoacoustic inversion, but the argumentation on selecting and configuring an appropriate metaheuristic has potential for any indirect inverse problem.

This investigation examined the effects of eight sessions of intensive teaching of motor tasks on children with poor coordination. The 24 children, aged 5 to 9 years, were grouped by age and assigned to 1 of 10 teachers. These teachers were then randomly assigned to either Task Treatment Group 1 (TTG1) to teach both the overarm throw and hopping to their allocated children or Task Treatment Group 2 (TTG2) to teach target kicking and the volleyball bounce and catch. Each group acted as the other group’s control. Repeated measures ANOVA of pretest-posttest scores showed that intensive teaching of the overarm throw, target kicking, and the bounce-and-catch task resulted in significant gains for the respective groups.

In this paper, we introduce the corresponding problems in the setting of polynomials over a finite field, and completely solve them in the large finite field limit.

Lamella flanges (Fig. 1) have lately grown popular with the designers of steel bridges –in their belief that these flanges provide us with the possibility of avoiding very thick flange plates in steel bridge structures. This belief is based on the assumption that the lamellas are perfectly plane and, therefore, in perfect contact everywhere, so that the loading from one lamella is transmitted into the other via pure compression, and that the perfect interaction of both lamellas is materialized by means of boundary fillet welds connecting both of the two lamellas. This simple assumption is, however, far from reality: it is not in the means of steel fabricators, not even in the means of those which are very progressively equipped, to produce perfectly plane flange lamellas. Then both lamellas exhibit unavoidable initial curvatures, which in combination form a gap between the lamellas, and consequently the directly loaded lamella is pressed into this gap. As the loading acting on every bridge is many times repeated, the aforesaid phenomenon is also many times repeated, (we can say that the lamellas „breathe“), and then an unavoidable cumulative damage process in the lamellas comes to being.

In this study, dyslexic and normal subjects rapidly repeated a series of phonologically complex and simple phrases. Dyslexic subjects repeated the phrases at a significantly slower rate and, in the complex condition, made significantly more errors. An examination of errors suggested that dyslexics may have difficulties in the planning stage of speech production. Findings are discussed in reference to other phonological deficits and oral reading problems in dyslexia.

Vaginal bleeding is an uncommon problem in childhood. In infants and children, vaginal bleeding may result from the hormonal fluctuations of precocious puberty.1-4 However, many cases are related to local vaginal problems. We report a case of recurrent vaginal bleeding caused by infection with Shigella flexneri that was difficult to diagnose and treat. This patient was considered by her general pediatrician possibly to have precocious puberty because of her repeated episodes of bleeding. CASE REPORT The patient was a 2-year-old Peruvian girl who was suffering from severe nonbloody, nonpurulent diarrhea when she met her adoptive parents in July 1989. The diarrhea persisted for almost 2 months, and although stool cultures in Peru were unrevealing, she was treated with 10-day courses of both trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and metronidazole.
