In the pursuit of eco-efficiency, resilience, and self-sufficiency, sustainable cities focus on long-term environmental goals instead of only short-term economic ones. To do so, many of them rely on servitization, the practice of replacing tangible solutions for intangible ones. Considering steel’s wide range of applications and its pervasive presence, this article’s goal was twofold: Not only to understand how servitization helps sustainable cities, but also the contributions and challenges of the steel present in service-providing. To do so, the criteria of sustainable urban metabolism and circles of sustainability were used to analyze three case studies of servitization: energy, housing, and mobility. The results showed that servitization can provide significant benefits to sustainable cities, while also being able to substantially alter the supply-side dynamics of steelmaking by affecting, most notably, demand. This brought to light how important it is for steelmakers to pay close attention to the service-providing initiatives that may concern their clients and products. Nevertheless, further research is necessary to fully understand all of the effects that servitization can have on all of the commodities involved in its implementation.

Анотація:
The aim of this paper is to explore how manufacturers becoming service providers by adding service offerings to their total offering. We investigate the extent to which existing internal capablity of manufacturing companies and external factors affect the level of servitization. This paper presents the state-of-the art of servitization within a manufacturing context. Our findings indicate a need for recursive iterations between different elements of separated and integrated processes in line with new business model. Thus, servitization is pozitiviley related to business model and product complexity. There is a need to improve the connective mechanisms and dynamics involved in business model development. Finally, this paper contributes to the development and rafinement of the process to shift from selling products to selling integrated products and services that deliver value in use for customers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the strategic management of a technology-enabled shift from a product-centric to a service-centric logic and to identify the sociotechnical dynamics underlying this transition. The study focuses on how manufacturers manage to create value in industrial markets through digital servitization. Design/methodology/approach An abductive research approach is used to investigate two manufacturing firms, and an interpretive framework is used as an analytical template. A cross-case analysis is conducted. Findings The case companies strategically managed sociotechnical processes of digitization to co-create value. Their service orientation delineates dissimilarity in terms of digital servitization. It reflects a viable ecosystem that moves toward datatization through adaptation in one case and a viable ecosystem that moves toward digitization through reconfiguration in the other case. Practical implications A theoretically grounded, empirically informed framework is proposed to detect transformational mechanisms to manage value co-creation in digitally servitized contexts, thus contributing to ecosystem viability. Originality/value This is the first study to adopt a system perspective such as the viable system approach combined with service-dominant logic to reconceptualize the overall sociotechnical processes and the underlying mechanisms leading to digitized value creation. In line with a systems view and a systematic process based on a transformative attitude toward digital servitization, the empirically informed framework identifies specific co-creation activities and recursive feedback loops.

Apparent from the latest pandemic, the dynamics and rate of change in society accelerate on a global scale. Ongoing mega-trends in society, such as digitalization, sustainability, and servitization, fundamentally changes the conditions for manufacturers when developing and providing new products. This study clarifies the combined impact and consequences on product development capabilities in manufacturing firms of the three mega-trends: (i) digitalization, (ii) sustainability, and (iii) servitization. The research is based on a pre-study, complemented with a semi-structured interview study at small, medium-sized, and large Swedish-based manufacturing companies, and a systematic literature review. The research makes evident that the main challenge is to empower engineers and development teams to model, present, evaluate, and develop expected and smart digitalized solutions in a time-limited environment and prioritize the most resource efficient and sustainable solution. Therefore, four complementary support resources are suggested: (i) a knowledge management platform, (ii) a data management platform, (iii) a set of criteria and metrics measuring progression, and (iv) support methods and tools to define, model, and evaluate solutions. When integrated into a digital platform, developers can simultaneously access and process the necessary information needed for sustainable, digitalized, and servitized solutions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how installed base information could help servitizing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) forecast and support their industrial service sales, and thus increase OEMs’ understanding regarding the dynamics of their customers lifetime values (CLVs). Design/methodology/approach This work constitutes a constructive research aiming to arrive at a practically relevant, yet scientific model. It involves a case study that employs statistical methods to analyze real-life quantitative data about sales and the global installed base. Findings The study introduces a forecasting model for industrial service sales, which considers the characteristics of the installed base and predicts the number of active customers and their yearly volume. The forecasting model performs well compared to other approaches (Croston’s method) suitable for similar data. However, reliable results require comprehensive, up-to-date information about the installed base. Research limitations/implications The study contributes to the servitization literature by introducing a new method for utilizing installed base information and, thus, a novel approach for improving business profitability. Practical implications OEMs can use the forecasting model to predict the demand for – and measure the performance of – their industrial services. To-the-point predictions can help OEMs organize field services and service production effectively and identify potential customers, thus managing their CLV accordingly. At the same time, the findings imply new requirements for managing the installed base information among the OEMs, to understand and realize the industrial service business potential. However, the results have their limitations concerning the design and use of the statistical model in comparison with alternative approaches. Originality/value The study presents a unique method for employing installed base information to manage the CLV and supplement the servitization literature.

Purpose This study aims to introduce the special issue on digital marketing and business-to-business (B2B) relationships. In general, only modest attention has been devoted to the study of digitalization in the B2B sector and even less on the importance of the perils and promises of digitalization for B2B relationships. This study’s goal is to help focus scholarly attention on the implications of digitalization on B2B relationships. Design/methodology/approach In this conceptual paper, the authors’ approach is to carefully review relevant literature, and to lay out the field of digital marketing and B2B relationships, conceptualizing it for future research. Findings The authors find that the following areas are critically important to understanding future trends in digital marketing and B2B relationships: coopetition, value co-creation, B2B branding, servitization, innovation networks, relationship dynamics and power and trust. Originality/value The intersection of digitalization and B2B relationships is an under-researched topic. With this paper and the accompanying special issues papers, the authors hope to begin to fill this critical gap.

As an increasing number of companies operates in international markets characterized by global competition, many traditional manufacturers augment their product offerings with services to gain competitive advantage. As servitization needs change throughout the company, many companies struggle on the transition from a product – to a service centric business model. The dynamic capabilities view analyses capabilities in changing environments and could therefore be an interesting theoretical lens for servitization research. Building on existing case research of dynamic capabilities in a servitization context, we analyze the impact of dynamic capabilities and especially of sensing, seizing and reconfiguration capabilities on firm performance in a servitization context. Additionally, we analyze the moderating role of environmental turbulence. The results, which are based on 206 manufacturing companies, show that dynamic capabilities are an essential factor for the performance of a firm in the context of servitization. We find a significant impact of sensing and reconfiguration on firm performance, whereas seizing has no significant impact. We fail to confirm a significant moderating impact of environmental turbulence, which indicates that dynamic capabilities are important in a servitization context indifferent of environmental turbulence. However, we find indication that reconfiguration is more important in relatively stable contexts, whereas sensing is more important in turbulent environments. We contribute to the literature on servitization and dynamic capabilities by creating evidence that dynamic capabilities have an impact on firm performance in a servitization context. This has practical implications as well: Managers in servitizing companies should assess their dynamic capabilities and should especially focus on reconfiguration in relatively stable environments and on sensing on turbulent environments.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine what kinds of capabilities are required by process industry companies as they move toward servitization. The authors proceed in two steps. First, the authors explore the capabilities needed in servitization with a qualitative multiple case study. Second, the authors link the identified capabilities to the servitization steps that were derived from prior literature. Design/methodology/approach Based on earlier servitization literature, the authors build a five-step servitization model for industrial companies. Then, drawing on the empirical study consisting of three focus group sessions with three case companies and 20 interviews in 14 case companies, the authors identify 14 servitization capabilities and link them to the servitization steps. Findings The study reveals how dynamic capabilities are required in servitization. In contrast to operational capabilities, which are geared toward enabling firms to make a living in the present, dynamic capabilities extend or modify operational capabilities in response to market changes. Based on the empirical study, the authors were able to identify dynamic capabilities for all five steps of servitization: identification of current services and customer needs, determination of a service strategy, creation of new business models and pricing logics, improvements in capabilities, and, ultimately, management services as a separate function. Research limitations/implications The current study is exploratory in nature and the number of empirical observations is limited to 14 industrial companies operating in the process industry. Practical implications Most importantly, in servitization, companies need dynamic capabilities to transform their operating capabilities in sales and marketing as well as in quantifying and communicating the value created for customers. Originality/value The study is the first one to make a link between the capabilities needed and the various stages of servitization and also the first to study the specific context of process industry companies.

Dans le processus de servitisation de la fabrication, le gouvernement chinois accorde une grande attention à deux questions, à savoir la relation entre la servitisation de la fabrication et les performances financières de l'entreprise manufacturière chinoise, et la relation entre la servitisation de la fabrication et la performance environnementale dans le contexte de la détérioration de l'environnement en Chine. Sur la base des données spécifiques de la Chine, l'impact de la servitisation manufacturière sur les performances financières et environnementales des entreprises est analysé dans cette thèse.En ce qui concerne le premier problème, une étude empirique du point de vue de l'hétérogénéité régionale, de l'hétérogénéité des sous-industries et de l'hétérogénéité des types est menée. L'impact de la servitisation manufacturière de 30 sous-industries, 31 provinces (villes) et 4 types différents d'entreprises sur les performances financières de la Chine est discuté en utilisant les données obtenues auprès de 512 entreprises manufacturières. Quatre conclusions principales peuvent être tirées : (1) Dans l'ensemble, il existe une relation non linéaire positive entre la servitisation et la performance financière des entreprises manufacturières chinoises. (2) Dans les entreprises manufacturières d'État et les entreprises manufacturières privées, l'impact de la servitisation sur la performance financière des entreprises présente un « type selle ». (3) La servitisation au cube de six provinces (Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Guangdong et Guangxi) a réussi le test de signification, indiquant la relation non linéaire entre la servitisation de fabrication et la performance financière. (4) La servitisation au cube de 9 sous-industries a réussi le test de signification, suggérant la relation non linéaire entre la servitisation de fabrication et la performance financière. Ces sous-industries sont l'industrie de transformation des produits secondaires de l'agriculture (C13), l'industrie agroalimentaire (C14), la fabrication de textiles (C17), la fabrication de matières premières chimiques et de produits chimiques (C26), l'industrie pharmaceutique (C27), la fonte et le calandrage des métaux ferreux. industrie de transformation (C31), industrie de la fonte des métaux non ferreux et de la calandre (C32), fabrication d'équipements généraux (C34), fabrication de matériel ferroviaire, naval, aérospatial et d'autres équipements de transport (C37). En outre, il existe une relation linéaire positive entre la servitisation et la performance financière dans l'industrie de la fabrication de machines et d'équipements électriques (C38).Pour le deuxième problème, la chaîne de valeur mondiale apporte non seulement un commerce de valeur ajoutée, mais forme également une chaîne d'émission de carbone commerciale mondiale. La méthode de décomposition en valeur ajoutée prend mieux en compte les caractéristiques de la servitisation, c'est une explication plus complète des sources régionales et industrielles de la servitisation manufacturière. Une étude basée sur le point de vue de la chaîne de valeur mondiale est menée pour présenter la relation entre la servitisation manufacturière et la performance environnementale, on peut conclure que : (1) Lorsque le niveau de servitisation est faible, une augmentation de la proportion de servitisation dans les exportations manufacturières promouvoir les émissions de carbone du commerce d'exportation, mais lorsque le niveau de servitisation est élevé, l'augmentation de la proportion de servitisation réduira plutôt les émissions de carbone. (2) L'effet d'échelle et l'effet structurel causés par la servitisation de la fabrication entraîneront une augmentation des émissions de carbone. (3) L'effet technologique, l'effet capital étranger et l'effet de régulation environnementale apportés par la servitisation n'ont aucun effet sur la réduction des émissions de carbone
In the process of manufacturing servitization, Chinese government pays great attention to two questions, namely, the relationship between manufacturing servitization and financial performance of China’s manufacturing enterprise, and the relationship between manufacturing servitization and environmental performance in the context of China's deteriorating environment. Based on the specific data from China, the impact of manufacturing servitization on enterprise financial performance and environmental performance are analyzed in this thesis.Regarding to the first problem, an empirical study from the perspective of regional heterogeneity, sub-industry heterogeneity, and type heterogeneity is conducted. The impact of manufacturing servitization of 30 sub-industries, 31 provinces (cities) and 4 different types of enterprises on financial performance of China is discussed by using the data obtained from 512 manufacturing enterprises. Four major conclusions can be drawn: (1) Overall, there is a positive nonlinear relationship between servitization and financial performance of China's manufacturing enterprises. (2) In the state-owned manufacturing enterprises and private manufacturing enterprises, the impact of servitization on financial performance of enterprises presents a “saddle type”. (3) Servitization cubed of six provinces(Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Guangdong and Guangxi) passed the significance test, indicating the nonliner relationship between manufacturing servitizaion and financial performance. (4) Servitization cubed of 9 sub-industries passed the significance test, suggeting the nonliner relationship between manufacturing servitizaion and financial performance. These sub-industries are agriculture sideline products processing industry (C13), food manufacturing industry (C14), textile manufacturing (C17), manufacturing of chemical raw materials and chemicals (C26), pharmaceutical manufacturing industry (C27), ferrous metal smelting and calender processing industry (C31), non-ferrous metal smelting and calender processing industry (C32), general equipment manufacturing (C34), railway, ship, aerospace and other transport equipment manufacturing (C37). Besides, there is a positive linear relationship between servitization and financial performance in the electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry (C38).For the second problem, the global value chain not only brings trade in value added, but also forms a global trade carbon emission chain. The value-added decomposition method better considers servitization characteristics, it is a more comprehensive explanation of the regional and industrial sources of manufacturing servitization. An study based on the global value chain point of view is conducted to present the relationship between manufacturing servitzation and environmental performance, it can be concluded that: (1) When servitization level is low, an increase in the proportion of servitization in manufacturing exports will promote carbon emissions of export trade, but when servitization level is high, the increase in the proportion of servitization will instead reduce carbon emissions. (2) The scale effect and structural effect caused by manufacturing servitization will lead to the increase of carbon emission. (3) The technological effect, foreign capital effect and environmental regulation effect brought by servitization have no effect on carbon emission reduction

Manufacturing firms seeking to create and extend competitive advantage are striving to include more services into their offerings. Meanwhile, there are research gaps such as how frontline service providers influence organizational dynamic capabilities and how organizational dynamic capabilities can be developed in servitization need to be systematically studied and explicitly explained. Although service is characterized by service providers applying own knowledge and skills for the benefits of customers, service providers are traditionally looked as pure decision takers. The influence of service providers upon organizational dynamic capabilities is habitually underestimated.   Because solution is classified as the most common offering in servitization and project-based integrated solution is an essential category in solution the study launched in this thesis focuses on firms providing project-based integrated water treatment solutions. The attempt to fill identified research gaps is carried out in three steps by answering hereinafter questions: What roles the frontline service providers, project manager and team members, play in project-based integrated solution? How service providers can influence organizational dynamic capabilities in project-based integrated solution? What mechanisms service providers can leverage to develop dynamic capabilities in project-based integrated solution?   This thesis builds on the intersection of dynamic capability and servitization literatures and is complemented by insights from project-based organization researches. Knowledge about the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities in project-based integrated solution is generated from literature review. Data on potential strategic roles of service providers, their influence on organizational capabilities, and mechanisms to develop capabilities are collected in semi-structured interviews. In this thesis, the strategic roles which project manager and team members play, and their respective influences upon organizational capabilities are differentiated. Meanwhile, data in relation with the service cocreators on customer side are also collected and analysed, and their influence on project performance is discussed. Overall, this study is qualitative in nature and the theory development follows a deductive in combination with inductive approach.   This study generates at least four theoretical contributions: firstly, it classifies the roles frontline service providers could play; secondly, it deepens the understanding of the influence frontline service providers could have on  organizational capabilities; thirdly, it explores the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities in servitization; and fourthly, it provides preliminary findings about the influence of service co-creators. This study also brings multiple managerial contributions for example providing insights for managers to reconsider firm organizational structure, decision-making processes, human resource and knowledge assets management in servitization. Additionally, this study suggests that there are applicable mechanisms for firms to develop capabilities in project-based integrated solution. Finally, this study emphasizes that, to improve project performance, managers should also put more efforts on developing service cocreators’ capabilities.

Since the 21st century, environmental management issues have become a major concern of the international community. Most consumers would choose more for environmentally-friendly products or services, even more companies are finding cost advantages from being eco-friendly as their green supply chain management or business model. Thus the activities of reverse logistics not only include return, recycle, reuse and remanufacturing, but also a most important way to improve the return and repair process for the reparable products. The international enterprises have to focus on how to satisfy the consumer demand with minimum inventory cost. In this study, we take the motherboard industry as the subject to investigate how inventory policy of sevitization affects the different performance of service standard and inventory cost. Create a system dynamics (SD) model of the strategic decision-making for enterprises choosing.   Furthermore, the development of future industry, companies need to have a good supply chain demand and supply of materials capacity between products to meet customer requirements for high-quality repair services. However, the content from the enterprise’s own operations, including product revenue and profit brought, of course, need more from the market positioning of the product, as well as working on strategies to assess, these reactions are all considerations within the enterprise in the service of the points. Then, be to clarify the issues for research, maintenance strategies for different applications, and systems for its service standards affect the cost of the two performance indicators.

This research focuses on the relationship among knowledge management, Information technology, dynamic capability and servitization, furthermore, whether they can enhance the business performance? Based on the questionnaire survey, a total of 500 questionnaires were issued to the top five hundreds Taiwanese firms in Electronic manufacturing services industry, and 365 valid questionnaires were obtained, the valid return rate was 72.8%. The research hypotheses were confirmed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and the research results show that: (1) knowledge management and IT can affect dynamic capability positively; (2) knowledge management and dynamic capability can affect servitization positively; (3) IT and servitization can affect performance positively. These findings also indicate that knowledge management and IT have positive effects on performance through the mediators of dynamic capability and servitization.

Owing to the fast changing of technological development and customer needs ,many global enterprises are facing fierce competition in the impact of globalization trend .Even large enterprises with stable growth are gradually losing their competitive advantages due to lacking of proper business strategies in response to highly competitive environment. However, because of the rapid rise of emerging countries, enterprises in developed countries have to reconsider their strategy of the future. Many managers in Taiwanese manufacturing companies deeply understand that they have to transform corporate value by innovation and creativity. This study aims to explore a variety of manufacturing servitization taken by enterprises in highly competitive environment. Dynamic capability can lead to business transformation. The purpose of this study is to find out inherent dynamic capabilities within enterprises through multiple perspective of the framework of dynamic capabilities. Furthermore, it would like to explore some of the issues about transformation of sevitization and ways of organizational innovation by analyzing the nature and microfoundamental of dynamic capabilities framework. In prior literatures, the dynamic capabilities were seen as the current position of the firm in industrial structure, determined by its process inside the firm and its path developed by its history. Recently, it was developed as a more concrete structure for presenting comprehensive nature and microfundamental capabilities within the firm. This case study presents how manufacturing enterprises enhance their competitive advantages by the transformation of manufacturing sevitization. Moreover, guided by dynamic capability framework, the study explores various creative ways of reconfiguration in the process of manufacturing sevitization. This research may offer insights for enterprises to develop future strategies in business transformation.

The rapid growth of the service sector and servitization of the manufacturing sector have both contributed to rising competition and have forced managers to look for effective ways to differentiate their services from competitors and competitive edge. Consequently, the value of establishing closer and lasting relationship with customers have come to the fore, and researchers as well as industry practitioners are trying to better understand the best strategies for achieving this goal. This paper evaluates two strategies firms have adopted in trying to build lasting relationship with customers, namely respect and rapport. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the concept of respect and rapport and how they affect customer loyalty. The study draws from existing literature and surveys customers of two service sectors in Asia. The research hypotheses connecting the three dimensions of respect and two dimensions of rapport with customer loyalty were tested using Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis. These findings lead to research and managerial implications that conclude the chapter.

Smart product-service systems (Smart PSS), as an emerging transdisciplinary paradigm, leverages smart, connected products (SCPs) and their generated services as a solution bundle to meet individual customer needs across different engineering fields. Owing to the advanced information and communication technologies, Smart PSS development differs from the existing product and/or service design mainly in three aspects: 1) closed-loop design/redesign iteration; 2) value co-creation in the context; and 3) design with context-awareness. These unique characteristics bring up new engineering design challenges, and to the authors’ best knowledge, none of the existing design theories can address them well. Aiming to fill this gap, a novel design entroy theory is proposed by adapting the information theory with engineering design. In this context, Smart PSS can be regarded as the information container. Hence, the closed-loop design/redesign iteration can be treated as the dynamic change of information and entropy in a balanced system. Meanwhile, the value co-creation process is considered as the exchange of accumulated information via the container. Lastly, the design context-awareness represents the process of eliminating entropy. As a novel prescriptive design theory, it follows Shannon’s information theory to determine the best solutions by considering the three characteristics integrally. It is envisioned this appraoch can largely facilitate today’s industrial companies’ digital servitization towards Industry 4.0 with better performance and user satisfaction.
