Retail thinking and tactics are beginning to find their way into health care delivery, further impacting the ability to have strong, dyadic doctor-patient relationships. External forces described in Chapter 2 and poor patient experiences provide fertile soil for their growth. The retail rhetoric consists of heavy emphasis on “value,” “transparency,” “branding,” and “consumer activation.” The implementation of retail tactics into health care shifts the emphasis from relational to transactional forms of exchange, the latter emphasizing short-duration exchanges between buyer and seller, standardized obligations, and economic satisfaction. Retail approaches give large health care organizations greater power given their scale and resources to engage in key retail tactics such as data analytics, market segmentation, marketing, and price competition. There are tangible reasons for bringing some aspects of retail thinking into health care. Their application, however, brings risks for patients and their care, and threatens to undermine doctor-patient relationships further.

Competition and Antitrust Law: A Very Short Introduction draws on case studies from across the EU and USA to examine the benefits of competition and the laws which safeguard competitive markets. Competitive markets deliver lower prices, better quality, abundance of choice, and increased innovation. But while competition benefits consumers, it can prove challenging for sellers and producers who may try to dampen the competitive process. This VSI elucidates the key challenges to competition — cartels and anti-competitive agreements, monopolies, and mergers — and looks at the policy considerations which affect competition law enforcement. There exists a delicate relationship between a free market economy and government intervention.

This chapter, like the other chapters in Part I of the book, uses the concept of “self-narrative” to explore a variety of texts featuring nonhuman animals and human-animal relationships. Self-narratives have been defined by social psychologists as the stories people tell in order to make sense of and justify their own actions—with this storytelling process at once reflecting and helping establish relational ties with others. Using two primary case studies—Lauren Groff’s 2011 short story “Above and Below” and Jesse Reklaw’s 2006 graphic memoir Thirteen Cats of My Childhood—chapter 1 explores how different storytelling media as well as different methods of narration bear on the project of using self-narratives to situate human selves within a larger, trans-species ecology of selves.

The Gettier Problem exhibits how our human cognitive fallibility of representation noted by Sellars and Quine always leaves open the possibility of completely justified beliefs being false. True justified belief, Gettier showed us, may result from the deduction of a justified false belief and thus fall short of knowledge. Justification that yields knowledge must not depend essentially on any error in the background system of the subject that defeats or refutes the justification. The justification consists of the capacity to meet objections to defend the target claim on the basis of acceptances, preferences over acceptances, and reasonings with acceptances contained in the background system of the subject. Errors in the system consist of accepting something false, preferring a false acceptance, or unsound reasonings. Knowledge is a kind of coherence based on defensibility of the target claim that is undefeated by errors and irrefutable by corrections of such errors.

In this short book, I have explored the way Greek and Roman conceptions of love affected their thinking about a range of sentiments in ways that may seem strange or at all events different to us today. The idea that love might erase the boundaries that separate two distinct selves puts in question our sense of what it is that constitutes an individual identity. It raises questions as well about the nature of altruism versus egoism, both because self-interest is often assumed to be the primary if not the sole motive for human action, and because, if friends really are another self, then it becomes difficult to distinguish at all what is done for the sake of another and what is done for one’s own sake. As an emotion, moreover, love stands apart from other motives for social interaction, for example, duty, obligation, a code of fairness or reciprocity, and sheer economic calculation, which is presumed to condition the behavior of the rational agent of choice postulated by modern economic theory....

This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's creativity and publishing record in two niche market genres—weird and the detective fiction—during the war years as his maturing process, both self-taught and mentored, continued. It begins with a discussion of Bradbury's relationship with the editors and publishers of Weird Tales and the frustrations he experienced as he sought to have his weird fiction printed. It then considers Bradbury's venture into detective fiction following the wartime suspension or outright demise of a number of pulp magazines catering to fantasy and science fiction, successfully placing several stories in Detective Tales, New Detective, and Dime Mystery. Under Julius Schwartz's entrepreneurial stewardship, at least thirty-eight Bradbury short stories from this period circulated, but failed to sell.

Not in our wildest dreams would we have imagined, a decade ago, that providers of short-term accommodation would regularly refuse to sell rooms to tourists despite having a vacancy; that thousands of tourists and residents displaced due to a cyclone or an earthquake would be offered emergency accommodation in people’s homes at no cost, with one click of a button; that tourist accommodation would compete with residential rental properties to the point of pushing residents out of their own cities; or that facilitators of online trading platforms would use their direct access to millions of people around the globe to push for societal changes, such as marriage equality. The effects of peer-to-peer accommodation networks entering the hospitality sector have surpassed our wildest dreams. Peer-to-peer accommodation networks are pushing boundaries we did not even know existed.

Chapter 1 explains the early efforts to fix military problems that had been exposed during the South African War (1899–1902) and make the armies of Britain, India, and the dominions compatible. It traces the deficiencies identified by the Elgin commission (1903), the recommendations advanced by the Esher committee for War Office reconfiguration (1904), and the military reforms of Secretary of State for War Richard Haldane to implement Esher’s recommendations, create an expeditionary force for continental warfare, and establish a Territorial Force for home defence duties and, potentially, second-line expeditionary contingents. The British Army, which was perennially short of manpower and operating on a voluntary basis for enlistments, could not afford to ignore potential contributions from overseas. The chapter also explains how Haldane managed to sell the dominions on military standardization and a general staff for the empire.

This chapter examines and criticizes the suggestion that we should interpret the “human” in “human rights” as (i) referring to the appropriate sort of action when certain rights are violated rather than (ii) the (human) universality of certain rights. It considers first a crude version of (i)—the view that human rights are rights in response to whose violation we are prepared to countenance humanitarian intervention; then it considers more cautious and sophisticated versions of (i). It is argued that all versions of (i) distract us with side issues in our thinking about human rights, and sell short both the individualism of rights and the continuity that there is supposed to be between human rights and rights in national law. The chapter does not deny that there are difficulties with views of type (ii). But it denies that the positing of views of type (i) gives us reason to abandon the enterprise of trying to sort these difficulties out.

This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's determined stance to go his own way and write stories to please himself despite the reluctance of slick magazines to publish them. Bradbury's early postwar success in the slicks came with short stories that were basically or with a few dark fantasies that the slicks were willing—very occasionally—to take a chance on. For example, Rita Smith at Mademoiselle had taken three Bradbury stories, but began to draw the line at stories about Mars. Throughout the late 1940s Bradbury's science fiction and dark fantasies were rejected by major market editors, deeming them “wrong” or “not quite right” for their readers. This chapter considers Bradbury's insistence on writing his own kind of story instead of slanting for the slicks and how his change in creative focus enabled him to sell many of his Martian stories, along with many of the other darker science fiction tales, to pulp magazines with little or no need for revision. It also discusses the impasse Bradbury had reached with his attempts at long fiction.

Infants and children are the often-ignored heroes when it comes to understanding human evolution. Evolutionary pressures acted upon the young of our ancestors more powerfully than on adults. Changes over the course of development in our ancestors were primarily responsible for the species and the people we have become. This book takes an evolutionary developmental perspective, emphasizing that developmental plasticity—the ability to change our physical and psychological selves early in life—is the creative force in evolution, with natural selection serving primarily as the Grim Reaper, or a filter, eliminating novel developmental outcomes that did not benefit the survival of those individuals who possessed them, while letting the more successful outcomes through. Over generations as embryos, infants, and children continued to change and to produce slightly different adults, a new species was born—Homo sapiens. This book is about becoming—of becoming human and of becoming mature adults. One theme of this book is about how an understanding of our species’ evolution can help us better understand current development and how to better rear successful and emotionally healthy children. The second theme turns the relation between evolution and development on its head: How can an understanding of human development help us better understand human evolution? The short answer to this second question is that children invented humanity, and that human evolution can be seen as children setting the stage and leading the way to species innovation.
