In the cemeteries of Graeco-Roman Alexandria, archaeological investigations initiated more than a century ago attest to a usage of water for specifically funerary purposes : this is well documented by the frequent discovery of wells, cisterns, basins and drain pipes, whose most reliable remains can be found inside the antic hypogea themselves, or in direct connection with them. From a separately volume which inventory the hydraulic installations that were carried out, the different modalities of water management are first described in their diversity. The reasons that explain their presence are next analysed : water needs concerned the maintenance of locations, the irrigation of gardens, the care of corpses or the commemoration of the deceased, above ground and in the underground graves designed to accommodate the regular visits that the families paid to their dead. The imported and flourishing Greek culture often explain theses practices, but the special case of funerary libations, related to the belief of the thirst in the hereafter, allows one to emphasize the question of the specific influence of Egypt and its religious customs

During the seventeenth century and into the first half of the eighteenth century, organ music in northern Germany underwent tremendous change. From the simple forms of the sixteenth century, still represented by Jacob Praetorius (1586-1651), the repertoire evolves toward the great preludes, toccatas, chorales and chorale fantasies of Dietrich Buxtehude, Nicolaus Bruhns, Georg Boehm and Vincent Lubeck. Two reasons can explain this phenomenon : the first lies in the fact that all the musicians were in the Lutheran church and obligated to the prescriptions of the workship services; the second is the major development of organ-making, due, notably, to Arp Schnitger, and culminating in the four-manual, sixty-seven-rank organ wich the constructed at saint Nicolas in Hamburg (1586-1651). The parallel study of the composition, the liturgy, and the instrument-making brings to light the total symbiosis among them. This study confirms that, in northern Germany, not only are these three elements indissociable, but they constitute the culture of an entire people

A " Haitian Intellectual " is a person who, by all sorts of practices, product ideas that tend to define, question Haitian society. The study takes as its starting point, the Constitution of 1801 and ended with the restoration of the republican regime in 1859. Haitian intellectuals themselves as defenders of Haiti but also present as the embodiment of the capacity of countries access Civilization. This objective gives rise to a dual strategy of positioning. It is, first, to address the external stakeholders, as must be met defamatory writings of the ancient settlers and opponents of the project of a new state born of the struggle against slavery. It was then express a clear desire to distance themselves from other social groups in the country who do not share or do not master the accepted and dominant at the time social codes. The thesis therefore explores how such recognition sought out. The quest for recognition of intellectual expresses himself through a claim of Haiti's ability to access the civilization and progress, but also by the development of a knowledge that legitimize their political power. A practical effect of their application for recognition through the rehabilitation ofthe "black race. " This thesis shows how the Haitian intellectuals fail to think the relationship between universalism from their westemized training and the particularity of other cultures existing in Haitian society

The French notion of “ailleurs” is the central term of this thesis. It derives from Latin and can be translated as “elsewhere”, “in another place”, “other part”, “in another mind”, “at another home”, or “in a different set of ob-jects”. Despite such variations, the notion of ailleurs can be said to refer to ideas of “otherness” and “difference”. It also contains a spatial element, the act of “being away” or of “shifting”.The idea that one might occupy a space as “other” and conceive of the “subject” in relation to this otherness, is the main problematic of this work which aims to explore romanesque images of the “other place” and of the “other space” from the point of view of different contemporary travel writers. These travel writings are taken from 20th and 21st Century literature and represents different forms of literature and have different countries of origin, they are drawn together to create a profile of “romanesque traveller”. The present thesis therefore focuses on the conception of the space by approaching the concept of otherness and its reality from a romanesque, literary and contemporary perspective.Plurality and alterity are essential components of this work: of the elements that constitute a space, a place, a landscape, a view, a reality, and a presence.Over the course of three chapters, an examination is conducted of the themes and spatial notions related to the notion of ailleurs: ‘home’, ‘distance’, and ‘elsewhere’.In this work, an image of space is constituted that reflects the complexity of appearances, sensations, expressions, revelations, symbols, ideas, dreams, projects, intentions which exist as a consequence of the individual experiences that are acquired by the “romanesque traveller”. The six contemporary books that served as main sources for this thesis are: Towards Another Summer by Janet Frame (New Zealand), Terre des hommes by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (France), Başka Yollar by Enis Batur (Turkey), Le poisson-scorpion by Nicolas Bouvier (Switzerland), L’Africain du Groenland by Tété-Michel Kpomassie (Togo) and On the road by Jack Kerouac (United States)

"hortillons" is a group of market gardeners in picardie region. Their fields, named "hortillonnages", are ruled in squares by a network of channels. This lead to the problem of controlling water level : rising or falling of it is still inauspicious for cultivation. The social relation of the group become disorganized with the decrease of the number of its number. The main hortillon's patrimony is landed estate. Two important means are used to get it : the purchase and the inheritance. The goal is to keep patrimony inside the family and to avoid to divide that land. To reach this goal the group practice professional endogamy and recuperation system of goods by purchasing and exchanging between the heirs

The author of this thesis placed Les avantures du baron de Faeneste by Agrippa d'Aubigné within the genre of table-talk literature found first in the Greek and Roman classical literature. He analysed the anecdotes and the dialogues of the text. He also established a classification of the anecdotes, so as to make the reading of the book easier and to put forward its main motifs. In addition, the author analysed the different subject talked about in this book. These subjects are : Paris, court-life, the province, the State, nobility, the Catholic Church and the life of Faeneste who, by telling his life reaches the status of literary character. .

The united-states and china have always in the first place tried to isolate themselves from the outside world, but international conflicts and the globalization of the economy do not allow them to make that choice any more. Until 1949, the united-states upheld any government in a position to preserve their interests. The breaking up of relation between the prc and the soviet union as well as the increasing role of china in international affairs prepared the ground for the establishment of diplomatic relations. The end of the cold war and the evolution of us/ussr relations left china without its counterbalancing role towards the ussr. In addition, chinese arms exports and american military aid to taiwan are a never-ending source of tension between the two nations. However, mutual economic interests alleviate differences of opinion about democracy or human rights. Commercial relations greatly developped during these last 20 years but benefit essentially the coastal regions of south china, hong kong, macau and taiwan. Chinese and americans give a high priority to their country's sovereignty, are proud of themselves and convinced of their intellectual and moral superiority. Their relations increased considerably during the last 30 years but were preceded by a long period of hostility and even armed conflict through third nations. If the united-states wish to become central figures in asia, they should take into account long term chinese interests. On the other hand, improvements in human rights will certainly help china play a more important role in international affairs and ease tensions with washington. Finally, more cultural and academic exchanges between those two giants would promote mutual understanding and appreciation. Will they ever be friends?

The griffin of the Archaic Period in Greece is the result of the import of the pattern from the Middle East. If its popularity at that time was obvious, it drastically decreased at the end of the Greco-Persian wars. However, when it reappeared in full force during the fourth century BC, it was completely changed. Ancient sources reference a tale, a Scythian myth in which the griffins are in perpetual conflict with their neighbors, the Arimaspians, over the glittering gold that is plentiful where they roost. In the arts, the griffin was no longer represented as a bronze protome on cauldrons dedicated to various deities, but rather on terracotta vases. Apart from its morphology, the creatures associated with each support are widely different in style, and the motif is nigh unrecognizable. What might have occurred for the griffin motif to have changed so much ? The Hellenization of the pattern in the fifth century through art and writing is difficult to discern. As for the Roman texts, they are of dubious reliability due to interpretations that do not necessarily reflect the thought process of the originals artists. However the Hellenization of the plastic and litterary motif is easily perceived through the stylistic development of the plastic pattern and the presence of the griffin in a pseudo Greek Scythian Koine fabricated.

This doctoral thesis is dedicated to a manuscript belonging to the Berlin National Library : D-Bds Mus. Ms. Autogr. J. V. Meder 1. Although it is classified among highly valuable sources since 1850, this score of a St. Matthew Oratorio-Passion hasn't been the subject of any research yet. Though, the title page being lost, the composer as well as the composition place and date of the unique remaining source were unknown. Basing on the analysis of the source (paper, inks and handwritings), this thesis sets out how the three versions forming this manuscript have been updated. Considering that the Passion has been performed in Riga throughout the 18th century, the study of the historical context of the work in that city, revealed as the actual place of composition by the watermarks, allowed to determine the meaning of the apocryphal versions in comparison to the original one. Lastly, the analysis of the materials characteristics in the perspective of the sources of that time, as well as the dating of the chorals melodies in the manuscript, permitted the final identification of the Actus Musicus de Passione Jesu Christi, composed by Johann Valentin Meder in 1716. This research restores to favour a Passion that is wrongly identified and edited in current publications (MGG, New Grove or Das Chorwerk edition), making it therefore the prelude to a critical edition

This study is about the water management in rural and urban communities of the roman provinces of Africa and Spain. Those regions can be described as dry to semi-arid in summer, when very irregular and unpredictable rain is typical in winter. During the period between first century BC and fifth century AD, those provinces remain under institutional, administrative and judicial authority of Rome. A particular attention will be focused on the local institutions, in cities as well as in the countryside, through Roman law. It will allow describing how those institutions manage to take the water administration in charge, and how they handle it in their relationship with provincial and central roman authorities. Roman law sheds a specific light on local institutions from the city and from rural communities. It allows describing how is water managed at this level and through the relationships between centre and periphery. This study deals with the various rules settling how is responsibility shared amongst those communities’ institutions, their main purpose being protecting from flood or water shortage. In a second time will be analyzed on what is based such a collective management, which can be defined as a consensus. This notion is relevant as it allows our understanding of collaboration, and of overcoming conflicts and crises. All those questions have to be understood as part of a more general understanding about institutional relationships between roman provinces and imperial government, and about local self-government. Key words: Roman law – water management – provincial institutions – centre and periphery – irrigation – Roman Spain – Roman Africa

Gatulle, Pierre. "Mécénat, patronage et clientèle autour de Gaston d'Orléans (1608-1660)." Paris 10, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA100128.
This study seeks to describe the operations of the patronage of Prince Gaston d’Orléans within the networks linking him with his clientele. This social bonds involved fostered exchange based on gratitude and service, and contributed to constructing the figure of the Prince. His patronage produced, among others, court divertissements, ballets, plays, literary and musical works, various collections, scholarly exchange, as well as the development of the botanical garden within its surrounding architecture. In return, his patronage created the reputations and hence the social and professional identies of the beneficiaries, within a framework of friendship, favour, service and fidelity, with an acute awareness of the rank accorded to each individual. The Prince’s network in turn generated others centred on each beneficiary. The full complexity of a Prince’s clientele, which was built up during a long period of subversive plotting, can thus be revealed. Unlike his circle of favourites, the Prince’s clientele remained surprisingly constant : no one fell from favour, broke off relations with or was abandoned by him as a consequence of his rebellious enterprises. His clientele network, centring on his housewold, sometimes intermingled service due to the Prince and the King, simultaneously or separately. At the same time, many of the Prince’s protégés, through their contact with other spheres – aristocratic, scholarly or religious – in Paris, Blois or the Languedoc region, enriched their reputations by their association with controversial polemicists, e. G. The libertins. These complexities make for a new conception of Gaston d’Orléans and his political activities

The present thesis is intended as an investigation of certain socio-economic aspects of the Iranian history. By examining the demographic and economic situation of cities, villages and nomads in two western provinces of Iran –Hamadân and Kurdistan of Ardalân (today the province of Kordestân) - at the beginning of the eighteenth century, we try to clarify various aspects of the urban and rural life and to throw light on urban-rural relations in the areas considered. This study will use some unexplored Ottoman documents, the tahrîr defterleri, or cadastral records, of western Iran. Now preserved in the Archives of the Prime Ministry in Istanbul, Turkey, these records are the products of several Ottoman occupations of Iran between the late sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries. These registers record in detail the names of each settlement of tribal group, its administrative affiliation, and a list of tax payers and amounts of taxes. To draw the best party from these administrative document, we established databases that contain almost all the information of the registers. To expose the result of the analysis of these databases, we show tables, graphs and maps of various types. This work is supplemented by a bibliography and indices

There are in these dissertation three chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction is explaining the idea of literary scooping out, its evolution and its function in the XXe poetry. Moreover, the critical method is developed in this part. The first chapter whose title is linguistic scooping-out, is divided into two levels : a) syntactical scooping-out is showing the syntactical proceedings used by Reverdy's poetry to scoop out the language. B) Spatial and temporal scooping-out is analysing the enunciation system and more particularly the shifters. The second chapter is explaining the rhythmical scooping-out and wants to show in a first part the formal proceedings which are subverting metrics. The second part : scooping-out and spatialisation shows how the typographical structures, the difference between graphemes, may participate to textual scooping out in Reverdy's poetry. The third chapter : image, imaginary and scooping-out, is showing, first, that image is missing, its causes and functions, while, imaginary and scooping-out is talking about several scooping-out topics

If some people think that the tragedy died, the tragic as for him rest an always current theatrical category. At Eugène Ionesco, playwright of the second half of the XXth century, we find the sense (direction) of the tragic in its works even if this one differs from the antique time (period). The ionescien tragic is inspired on a vision of the world fundamentally absurd. So, following the example of his contemporaries as Samuel Beckett for example, Eugène Ionesco proposes a tragic humble (cf. Games (sets) of massacre: tragic = absence of outcome (exit)), a tragic political in the measure of the upheavals of the century (cf. Rhinoceros, King is dying, Macbett, etc.). On the place (square) of the heroes fighters, we have at Ionesco the marionettes which gesture, objects which proliferate (cf. Chairs); a human language which is questioned (implicated) (cf. The bald Opera singer "tragedy of the language"). The theater of Eugène Ionesco arises rather from the crisis of the humanism

The main source contains 1539 acts of homage and feudal recognition from Rouergue and Southern Cévennes to princes of Armagnac between 1308 and 1400. The study of these acts provides better knowledge of the history of thne Armagnac family in the fourteenth cent. And of the geography of their rouergat and cevenol estates. These estates cover the county of Rodez which is attached to the county of Armagnac, and the viscounty of Creissels (near Millau) et the barony of Roquefeuil-Meyrueis which are attached to the viscounty of Fezensaguet. This work illustrates the vitality of feudality in this area during the late Middle Ages. Feudal-vassalic relationships affect not only the whole nobility of the principality, but also the diocesam high clergy, rich townsmen, officers and countrymen. Recognitions concern both large patrimonies and small land-holdings. Feudal ties are still used by rising princely power. This princely power comprises increasingly significant staff including of university trained lawmen who introduce into acts Roman law terminology, thus at the same time granting local rights of justice to feudatories, magnify the prince's authority, now uncontested
Coissard, Guillaume. "Lectures matérialistes de Leibniz au 18e siècle." Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSEN052.
In this dissertation, I study the unexpected reception of Leibniz's philosophy in the 18th century French materialism. The aim is to identify the leibnizian concepts, arguments or images that are used by La Mettrie, Diderot, d'Holbach and Helvétius to build their own thoughts. Three kinds of results are shown. Firstly, to understand better the origins of French modern materialisme and particularly its relationship to 17th century metaphysics. In this perspective, this stydy shows that materialists do not necessarilyu reject metaphysics but rather use it for their own goals. Secondly, to show the role of Leibniz in the in the elaboration of a so-called radical philosophy, which means to question the common idea that radicalism originates from spinozism. Lastly, by looking at the materialists uses of Leibniz's concepts, it tries to identify new possible interpretations of his philosophy, more precisely to consider the historical reception of leibnizian philosophy as a way to reveal his theoretical potential. This work is divided in two parts : in the first one, it studies the mediations by which Leibniz's philosophy was introduced in France in the 18th century (Wolff, Du Châtelet, Maupertuis). In the second one, it examines four different uses of the leibnizian philosophy, namely, in La Mettrie, Diderot, d'Holbach and Helvétius

In the mid-XVIIth century, the best minstrels in town and country begin to be admitted in the ranks of the royal musicians, while wind instruments made of turned wood are improving to meet the new demands. A repertoire is born from this context, and evolves through vocal and instrumental music. Various influences contribute to the improvement of organological specimens whose form and sonority remains linked in people's mind to the pastoral, country life, or at least to sweet gentility. An analysis of the historical and musical contexts leads us to a study of each repertoire: transverse flute, recorder, flageolet, three-holed flute, oboe, bassoon and court musette. This analysis is supported by a systematic study of the whole of the known published repertoire, and by examining some fifty lyrical works. An overview of the repertoire, organology and techniques, is enlightened by an acoustic study, and by various ethnomusicological comments on the modern world
