This thesis explores the inputs and the impact of digital footprints on the understanding of the spatial dimensions of urban tourist practices. Digital footprints are an emerging field of investigation that promises a better understanding of service stakeholders’ expectations (businesses, institutions, academic). From heat maps to dashboards, data is collected, processed, aggregated, smoothed, and synthetized into visualizations that could reveal a new tourist space-time. Applying frameworks from tourism geography and critical data studies, we suggest a critical approach to analyze the way these data are used. A review of the existing literature confirms an uptrend in digital footprints usage / monitoring, identifies what is at stake regarding the observation of tourist cities and points out critical limits. Two complementary approaches are then presented to measure the concrete value of this data regarding the space-time of urban tourist practices. In Biarritz (France), the analysis of a given social media dataset highlights the need for a contextualized analysis of footprints. In La Rochelle (France), a GPS dataset complemented with a series of interviews reveal the potential of elicitation methods to better understand digital footprints and narrate the practice of the tourist city. Eventually, these two approaches confirm our initial hypothesis i.e. digital footprints tend to enrich, under specific conditions, the understanding of tourism practices. The outcomes obtained allow us to advocate the relevance of contextualized and qualitative research on digital footprints in geography

Along with the geometrization of urban space producing a geometric center, a hierarchical vision of space occupation has been developed. The top of this hierarchy has coincided for a long time with this geometrical centrality which becomes the essential element of city's identification, known by the term of downtown or city center. It is essential to note that downtowns have significantly evolved. Like other cities all over the world, the city of Bejaia doesn't escape this phenomenal disruption of these traditional centers, followed by emergence of new centralities. In the framework of a multidisciplinary approach, our study aims to discover different levels of breaks and degree of both conformance and difference between planning policy and socio-economic potentials of Bejaia, concerning its central spaces. Essentially, it searches to identify its touristic predispositions and develop their consistence and coherence in the light of opening up to the Mediterranean area

This research has also a contribution to the qualitative study in the domain of tourism and advertising. In order to get an exhaustive investigation in the process of interpreting advertising language, analyzing the content qualitatively with the integration of a linguistic approach is suggested. The qualitative study reinforces the tendency in tourism advertising since it necessitates careful studies about the topics of tourism and advertising. The objective of this research is not to make a comparison between different figurative devices employed in tourism advertising in the case of Marrakech, but rather to examine the connection between the explored rhetorical figures and discover how they contribute to forming the image of Marakech as one of the best destination the potential tourist may choose and how they make him understand the destination through advertising. These connections go around the context of metaphorical patterns and the wants of potential tourists. Analyzing the content underlines the features of the language used in tourism advertising. These features are extracted from the tendencies in tourism and changes that happen according to the wants and requirements of tourists throughout. Only a subjective interpretation is possible in the case of language in this research area. The unavoidable part of this kind of research is the researcher’s qualified opinion. The researcher generally guides the entire process; he is part of the study because the interpretations of the work are made according to the abilities and the beliefs of the researcher. However, this does not mean that the ideas and points expressed in this work are purely subjective. They rely on complete research that may be confirmed by other researchers in order to be considered as a reflection of general tendencies and wider facts about the practice of language in tourism advertising

Tourism Destination Competitiveness is a new concept in Vietnam and Laos, no study on this subject carried out in the context of heritage cities (in Vietnam and Laos). This study mainly uses the Tourism Destination Competitiveness (CTD) model of Ritchie and Crouch (2003) to analyze the competitiveness of three heritage cities in Southeast Asia: Hue (Vietnam), Hoi An (Vietnam), and Luang Prabang (Laos). To this end, using 7 criteria and 51 sub-criteria, this research applies the Fuzzy Number and the model in Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach allows to classify these three destinations. This empirical study was based on a two-step procedure. The first step consisted of applying the Fuzzy Number to analyze the CTD of three mentioned destinations. At the second step, the TOPSIS process was applied to the ranking analysis. The TOPSIS provided not only the ranking of the 3 destinations according to 7 criteria, but also the final general classification among the sub-criteria. Finally, managerial implications for three studied cities to improve their tourism competitiveness were discussed. The results showed that the Fuzzy Number in TOPSIS can be implemented as an effective approach for the CTD evaluation.Key words: Tourism Destination Competitiveness, Fuzzy Number, Fuzzy Number in TOPSIS, Crouch and Ritchie model

This thesis questions the spatial, social and political reshaping going on in a small, holy, with a rich heritage touristic town. Lalibela is a small town with its churches, registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List, linking intensely the town to theworld. This research is largely based on a field survey resolutely qualitative, with participative observation work and interviews. Space is analyzed in the particular context of a resettlement, that is to say in a time of crisis with the eviction of the inhabitants who lived around the churches and their relocation in the outskirts of the city. The analysis of the legitimization and of the implementation of the resettlement highlights the weight of public power and of different international actors in the reorganization of the local space. With other spaces and other particular times such as religious celebrations, cultural festivals and public consultations, it seems that Lalibela is a small town in which international actors but also Ethiopian actors particularly linked to globalized space are boosting an opening to the world. The internationalization of Lalibela is also achieved locally. It establishes itself in landscapes and new spatial forms with the objectiveof reinforcing touristic attractiveness. In addition, some dwellers are creating a new connection to the world and are reaping advantages from the possibility of interaction with foreigners offeredby touristic activity. But as internationalization grows, Ethiopian political space still remains meaningful in local dynamics. This research shows that spatial, social and political recombination in Lalibela correspond to a three-cornered relationship between local social space, the importance of the State and of an Ethiopian political culture, and the globalized logics and actors

Tourism in Kenya plays a significant role as a source of income as well as a creator of employment opportunities. Using the case studies of Amboseli area, this study analyses the relationship between the tourist-host community, tourism and the environment. How and to what extent tourism development has influenced the Maasai community’s way of life. Why was the tourism industry introduced to the region? With unsurpassed level of tourism growth in the area, a pertinent question remains unanswered: was it initiated for the benefit of the urbanites or the hosts? Is it a development by, with or for the local/host community? In relation to these questions, the overall research question and indeed the theme for this study is: “Wildlife-based Tourism in Kenya: A Form of Domination of the Local Communities?” Based on a survey carried-out on three key tourism interested parties (local community, Kenya Wildlife Service staff and tourists), two groups of stakeholders are identified. The first group, ecocentric, prefers management actions which take care of the tourist interests as a priority. The other group of stakeholders, anthropocentric, favours the utilization of the environment for the local development. Based on the results of the current study and the existent literature, this work concludes that, wildlife-based tourism in Kenya serves the interest of the urban dwellers at the expense of the tourist-host community

Waitresses, without constituting a homogenous group, are often subjected to heavy workloads and low earnings, which can lead to an intensification of stress, fatigue, and illness. The working conditions affect their health and well-being. This thesis analyzes, with a feminist perspective, the unequal relations between waitresses and their male counterparts, their superiors, and their clients. Those relations, clearly shaped by deep class disparities, are complexified by the presence of a foreign clientele. Sexual harassment is omnipresent in some establishments. Waitresses, confronted with poverty and insecurity, risk being drawn into prostitution. In order to escape this trap and to improve their conditions, they develop various tactics and strategies with mitigated outcome. Keywords: waitress, restauration, poverty, gender, class and race relations, gender and development, touristic neighbourhood, tourism, sexual tourism, prostitution, sexual harassment, tactics and strategies.

The objective of this study is to understand how circulates the tourism imaginaries of the city of Tangier through its touristic trajectory. The tourism discourse on the destination rely on a powerful imaginary of the city which configures heterogeneous representations inherited from the past of the city which stood out, early, as city-world then as a literary top-place of the 19th century. The work on the narrative gap in the points of view of the diverse actors in copresence on the territory reveals the modes of consumption and of (re) production of the tourism imaginaries to build or slow down the metropolisation of the postcolonial city. On one band, the dynamics of the action around the heritages allows to understand the role of the tourism in the territorial anchoring of dormant geographical imaginaries. On the other band, the urban project conception by the state actors highlights the way are got back and disinfected the images of the tourism in the elaboration of the relation of the city to the world towards to integrate it into the global economy

This research addresses both the production and the reception of a touristic imagination. Based on an ethnographic investigation conducted on the town of Grasse, in the Maritime Alps, this work highlights the ambivalence of Grasse/perfume and proposes to go beyond this model showing the importance of the association Grasse/Provence. After an evolutionary presentation of the main characteristics of the city, of certain topological social and cultural features which today make it unique and recognisable territory, we show how the municipalities and tourist authorities enhance the essence of the city through urban facilities and local productions. Thus, souvenirs syncretize city discourse transmitted and produced around and about the city contributing to the creation and transmission of representations of oneself, for oneself and for others. The study of the representations of the city of Grasse stresses its local identity logic influenced by touristic promotion - using cultural material such as posters, postcards, souvenirs but also speeches, literature and ideas - available to tourists. The very process of patrimonialization influences the inhabitants. They have been given the opportunity to give their point of view where they stand in relation with the omnipresent tourism imaginaries representations of the city

This work tries to detect the real apparent and latent potentialities of a renewed tourism in two remarkable sites of Tunisia. On the one hand, the hotel chain of the city of Sousse, in connection with the Medina, and on the other hand, the coveted restructuring project for a luxury hotel located in the northern cost of Tunis. It should be noted that this research raises an urgent approach to meet the new requirements for the development and sustainability of tourist landscapes. In this case, Tunisia is a favorite field of application and a predictor of plausible modern horizons for differential spatial scales. Both sites have resources of natural, patrimonial, identity and socio-economic wealth. It has been a question of grasping the various structural and institutional developments of Tunisian tourism, its strengths and its constraints, especially after the period of the Arab spring termed a period of "hesitation". Already, it turns out the simplistic role of the state by articulating the relative rules of control and partial assistance for the development of this economic resource. The private sector has not yet revealed real recovery and recovery capabilities; their actions remain globally chimerical. It is in this context that our research work, which aims to set up a new model of luxury tourism, reinforces the attraction of these hotels and allows them to attribute a cultural and heritage character through a choice of two judicious sites. At the level of the city of Sousse: the methodology followed, is based on a classification of the hotels which lived a total demolition and reconstruction; hotels that have had a partial or interior renovation while preserving the facades; hotels that have kept the original state and hotels that have changed main business. The partial observable dysfunction of the tourist activity requires elements of urgent answers regarding the aspirations and the development of the relations between the hotel structures and the other components of the city, in particular, its Medina. The Medina Rehabilitation Project is an example that can offer another image of a multi-cultural landscape and animation. Today, the diversification of tourism products and services is a necessity, to avoid the uni-functional model based on mass seaside tourism. The latter must be revised while adopting strategies of multifunctionality and territorial valorisation. Surveys undertaken directly from the SERVQUAL grid, have shown that the effort deployed remains below the norms, we record significant indicators. For the northern cost of Tunis: currently, the world of tourism is changing, which has led us to choose a hotel structure being converted into a "luxury hotel". Determinants have been identified to define the design and creation components of this new tourist tropism. A multi-scale benchmark test is proposed so that it is a decision-making scheme for a renovation program in "luxury hotels" in Tunisia. An attempt at labeling was considered "nTulux" to prescribe recommendations and new benchmarks to the Tunisian tourism industry

Saint-Louis, of Senegal, is located in the West African coast. It is a very typical town. It was the first city ever built by Europeans on the Black Continent during the XVIIth century, and inherited a town-planning and architectural heritage which is consequent, because of its diversity and originality. However, those remains of the colonial era are threatened. Nowadays, most of the buildings are in ruins or have vanished, because of economic, climatic circumstances, or because of the wearing effect of time. While the public institutions seemed to be overwhelmed by this issue, the UNESCO gave hope by listing the city in the UNESCO World Heritage. In the meantime, the local government faced reorganization, and made partnerships up in a context of decentralization. Thus, the architectural heritage faces many initiatives of restoration and promotion. It now has become the pretext of a renewed process which is visible in a spectacular way, by the rise of the tourism and the development of trade and services. Moreover, this process is not without some strain, and it even put in question the exploited heritage

The World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat is not only a cultural, historical, and archaeological site but also a living site. This “Pearl of Cambodia” hosts more than 5 million tourists each year and is quickly becoming the keystone of Cambodia’s economic development. However, the development of tourism in Angkor is very recent, having flourished at an accelerated pace after 1998 when the second General election brought political stability to the country.Increased economic development has resulted in the proliferation of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and night markets in the town of Siem Reap, the gateway for all visitors to Angkor. Are local people well-prepared to take part in the development of tourism in Angkor ? Is it possible for the local population to benefit from tourism in the short and long term ? This thesis uses a twofold method, both quantitative and qualitative, to analyze the direct and indirect involvement of local people in the economic development of tourism in Angkor. Ultimately, this study aims to show how the development of tourism has contributed to the social and economic reconfiguration of the local population. This research demonstrates that the participation of local people in the development of tourism is successful only when it contributes to their professional and personal development, such as their financial and non-financial benefits. This is evident in terms of employment in the hotel and catering sectors, although progress is still needed. Greater efforts still need to be made in the indirect participation of local people through agriculture and crafts. At a higher level, this thesis is a contribution to the study of the role of the local population in the tourism sector of a developing country

The historic centres of towns of 2000 to 20 000 inhabitants constitute an undeniable asset for a qualitative tourist development which can be called « Tourism of heritage ». This built heritage requires to be identified, safeguarded, protected, sometimes rehabilitated then developed even staged. Its access must be organized and managed to prevent the potential risks and nuisances engendered by an excessive number of visitors. The numerous economic or public actors concerned by the urban dynamic are sometimes driven by different logics which it is advisable to harmonize. The transfers of competences to intermunicipal management can in this case bring a certain complexity to the governance. The historic centres constitute the medium of numerous actions linked to the animation of heritage. The national label “Cities and Countries of art and history”, introduced and developed by the French Ministry of Arts and Communication, supplies the methodology and the tools needed to use it. The example of the town of Pézenas (France, Hérault, 8000 inhabitants) seemed to us particularly representative of a real policy of tourist development on the long term. The tourist production, which results of the conjunction of initiatives of public and private actors, is marketed thanks to a more professionalized tourist communication, leaning itself on internet and on the actions of city networks. A mastered tourist activity can then generate beneficial social, cultural and economic impacts on the society that receives it

Through the confrontation of experiences between three Palestinian cities (Nablus, Bethlehem and Ramallah), we showed how heritage process, cultural and tourism development are integrated into territorial resilience strategies. Palestinian skateholders of heritage, cultural and touristic making are trying to maintain and strengthen territorial cohesion, threatened by spatial fragmentation caused by the occupation and the Israeli settlements. The heritage process in the historic centers is a way to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. It reveals the capacity of Palestinian stakeholders, financially and technically supported by international stakeholders, to resist the pressures of the occupation, and cope with its many uncertainties and disturbances. Its purpose is the recovery of the Palestinian territory by an inhabit resistance, in order to maintain inhabitants with low income within the historic centers and to attract new ones. Heritage development aims also to participate in the cultural and tourist development of these old neighborhoods and give to the Palestinians the possibility of a new path for social and economic development. After Angkor was listed as a World Heritage Site (1992), Siem Reap town which is situated at its doorway experienced intense urban development. The thesis investigates the processes of urban development and architectural design created under the influence of tourism. The research questions the conflicts between planning and urban development. While the plans carried out by international cooperation produce a domain of action and a conceptual framework through which the territory is apprehended, private stakeholders' procedures and objectives succeed in diverting regulations. We show that the faults which cause the failure of the plans have to be sought in the programs and the rules shaped by Western-based notions now disseminated at the international scale. Without denying the tabula rasa of urban landscapes, we argue that different forms of heritage play a part in architectural design and urban transformations: - the representations of places, produced since the 19th century, shape tourism linked projects; - inherited forms and practices mobilized by the inhabitants are negotiated with exogenous models and lead to original urban shapes

The urban growth of Al-Hoceima is stricken by the same sickly symptoms that usually strike the towns of the underdeveloped countries in general and Mococco in particular. The urban growth of this town hasn't a particular sign depending on the primary sector but it depends on the tertiary sector. The orientation of Al-Hoceima to the tertiary sector is influenced by several factors that combined with each other and which are the result of historical, political and natural circumstances. In fact, the natural conditions are so harsh that they haven't favoured the development of agriculture. Fish, the unique ressources of Al-Hoceima, is either consumed locally or carried away by the middelemen to the other areas of Morocco. The secondary sector faces some difficulties and didn't provide enough jobs to the population. However the factories that treat fish employ a great number of the population. On the other hand the population growth has some effect on the development of tertiary sector activities the unsteadiness of the rural lige and its difficulties urge the population to go to the town. This flood of the countrymen and the high birth rate have provoked a population increase that has played an important role in the enlargement of the tertiary sector, which is the unique chance of the social and economical integration

This thesis aims at understanding the relation to space and the co-presence of individuals living temporarily or permanently in a city subjected to the double process of heritage and tourism. While many "hauts-lieux" which development is based on heritage, such as the ancient centers of Venice or Bruges or Toledo are characterized by the fact that they are invested by tourists day and night throughout the year, we can ask ourselves how urban heritage places, which have a lower level of tourist activity and are more marked by seasonality, operate and evolve. In this sense, small touristic and historic cities constitute a fertile ground of inquiry, especially since they still receive little attention from geographers interested in tourism. Considering urbanity as defined by Lévy and Lussault combining density and diversity, these cities experience various degrees of urbanity, moving from a form of "entre-soi" outside the touristic season to a high density coupled with a high mix in high season. In order to understand the relation to space, we are interested in the representations, practices and modes of appropriation of space of individuals living temporarily or permanently in Dinan (Côtes d'Armor) and Sarlat (Dordogne), two cities with different levels of touristic development and heritage making, substantial but different. Using the typology developed by the Equipe MIT, it will be a cross-reading of a city with a tourist function and a touristified city that will be carried out

Tourist imaginaries are strongly attached to geographical imaginaries. They are constructed through a process of representation where different mental images interact. These mental images are constructed from different information sources that we perceive in our daily lives. Information about places is disseminated through literature, painting, music, movies, television; tourist communication (brochures, posters, catalogs, postcards, photos, videos, television, guides); the experiences of others (travels, stories, etc.). All these idea-images of places circulate constantly on different scales (local, national, international) and shape our geographical and tourist imaginaries. As a result, tourism imaginaries are not fixed, they change over time, they are constantly reformulated or reaffirmed, they transform themselves.Today, with the globalization of tourism, which increases the competition between different territories, territorial actors are faced with the need to create attractive images in order to differentiate from other territories, in order to attract investments and tourists. However, the efforts made by territorial actors to create attractive images fail to give the expected results. This is the case of territories that are associated with negative images - war, violence, delinquency and risks – deeply rooted in the collective imaginary and which affect not only the geographical imaginary of the country concerned, but also that of their tourist destinations.Given these negative images, local actors of tourist destinations will build an image that enhances their own tourist attractions/attributes. However, at the same time, this eclipses its direct association with its own country, in other words, a deterritorialized image of the tourist destination. It is from this paradoxical situation that this thesis examines the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction process of geographical and tourist imaginaries, based on the analysis of a UNESCO World Heritage city, Cartagena de Indias, located in a country associated with negative images since a long time, Colombia. This research work proposes a double analysis, one focused on local actors and their strategies for producing tourist images, and the other on tourists as consumers and coproducers.Particular emphasis is put on the analysis of information from modern media (Internet and social networks) as they actively participate in the circulation of visual and textual content that shape geographical and tourist imaginaries

This research study aims to show the transition from the ordinary use of public spaces to the enunciation of a city narrative in which the social actors are committed in the shared project of an urbanity in the making. Beyond a pure aesthetic preoccupation, the urban dialogism responds to the centrality of the city as a privileged space for the elaboration of social issues. By focusing on the appropriation of urban space during guided urban walks, we will see how they constitute a catalyst for deconditioning participants in their relationship to the city. This research project thus follows three investigation perspectives.First, there is the transition from the pure heterogeneity of urban styles – from a building classified as institutional heritage to the anomie of a vacant lot - to the dialogical interplay between aesthetics in competition. We will be able to understand the interaction of languages, the cohabitation of institutional forms and more individualized and temporary statements, expressed by an ever-changing citizenship picture. Then, it is a question of observing the transformation of the functional itineraries to the displacements according to elective courses going through characteristic elements, allowing an ever-renewed affective grip on the city. Finally, this study constitutes an analysis that is not limited to a taxonomy of practices. Rather, it seeks to account for the management of meaning in interaction - a form of interaction where the appropriation of the city and its objects is not only intimate, but observable because explicit, socialized, and attested by experience
