Room-temperature single-crystal X-ray structural characterizations are recorded for hydrated lan- thanoid(III) bromide/2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (tpy) (1 : 1) complexes, showing all to be ionic and of the form [(tpy)Ln(OH2)x]Br3.yH2O, where x and y are 6 and 1 for the isomorphous series Ln = La(-)Er (and intermediate members, by presumption), and 5 and various values for Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu. Crystals of [(tpy)Ln(OH2)6]Br3.H2O are monoclinic, P 21/c, a ≈ 8·5, b ≈ 18, c ≈ 16·3 Å, β ≈ 108°, Z = 4; for Ln = La, Er, conventional R values on |F| were 0·048, 0·080 for No 4027, 1347 ‘observed’ (I > 3σ(I))

Abstract We have developed a colorimetric assay for quantifying alpha 2-macroglobulin-trypsin complex (alpha 2M-TRY) in human serum, based on use of a new chromogenic substrate D-gamma-tert-butyloxy-Glu-Gly-Arg-3-carboxy-4-hydroxyanilide dihydrochloride (PS-3001). Within-run CVs by this assay were 4.76%, 1.57%, and 0.83% for trypsin complex concentrations of 3.1, 12.2, and 48.1 U/L, respectively (n = 10 each). Between-day CVs were 5.38%, 3.12%, and 2.20% at each concentration, respectively (n = 7). Mean analytical recoveries of alpha 2M-TRY added to serum were 100%, 105%, and 101% for 9.2, 15.

This chapter examines Twelver Shī‘ī scholarly treatments of martyrdom, with a particular focus on historical and theological discussions surrounding the figure of the Imām. Shī‘ī scholars attempted to reconcile two potentially contradictory positions: (1) a maximalist notion of the Imām’s knowledge; and (2) a belief that many (if not all) of the Imāms were murdered by their enemies. If both of these premises are true, then is an Imām ultimately complicit in his own death? If he takes no steps to avoid his own murder, then is this suicide?
