Abstract:
This chapter extends many of the results from Chapter 29 on single trait-fitness associations to the multiple trait setting. It examines the estimate of multivariate fitness surfaces, starting with quadratic surfaces and then moving to nonparametric versions (which assume no a prior functional form). It also examines path analysis, the analysis of missing data, and multilevel selection.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are World Health Organization grade I tumors and have a low potential for malignant transformation. However, DNETs often affect a patient’s quality of life and can cause medically intractable seizures. The estimated prevalence of DNET is 0.6% to .0.8%; however, they are found in approximately 20% of patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy. Greater than 90% of patients with DNET have onset of epilepsy prior to the age of 20. The most common presentations of DNET are complex partial seizures and simple partial seizures. Abstract:
An unquestionably important, oral-history collection presents the first-person stories of survivors of the genocide in Darfur, a region in western Sudan where the Sudanese government is accused of abetting the murder of an estimated 400,000 persons. The genocide in Darfur erupted in 2003 but its seeds had been planted years before. Following years of attacks on their villages, livelihoods and persons, as well as political and economic disenfranchisement by the Government of Sudan, the black Africans of Darfur rebelled. In retaliation, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir had his troops and an Ara

How jobseekers set their earnings expectations is central to job search models. To study this process, we track the evolution of own-earnings forecasts over 18 months for a representative panel of university-leavers in Mozambique and estimate the impact of a wage information intervention. We sent participants differentiated messages about the average earnings of their peers, obtained from prior survey rounds. Demonstrating the stickiness of (initially optimistic) beliefs, we find an elasticity of own-wage expectations to this news of around 7 per cent in the short term and 16 per cent over the

Chapter 1 introduces the rationale for studying and analyzing the economic aspects of American art as a “category” of art genres and, more generally, it places the market for art in the context of trade for all goods and services. Art, like all traded goods, possesses credence characteristics, but they are present to a significant degree since the requisite assurance of authenticity is often difficult to determine. The chapter also explains why American art can be segmented for study apart from a “homogeneous” art category and also as two markets—one prior to art produced before 1950, and anot

The Economics of American Art focuses solely on critical economic aspects of the full range of American art (as opposed to art produced and traded in the United States). After a brief introduction to the history of this market, simple economics in both narrative and statistical form is used to plumb a number of important topics and issues. Using a unique sample of 14,000 art auction observations between 1987 and 2013 of eighty American artists born before 1950, several important topics related to art and the marketplace are examined. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of disease burden globally. According to the 2017 Global Burden of Disease estimates, there were 14 million new cases of CVD, 80 million people living with this condition, and nearly 1 million deaths attributed to CVD in the Americas. Hypertension is the major risk factor for CVD, causing half of the cases, and is highly prevalent, affecting one in four adults, including 40% of those over age 25 years. To appropriately detect hypertension, accurate measurement of blood pressure is critical, and inaccurate measurement of BP has important conseque
