Abstract:

I consider a model for the control of criminality in cities. The model was developed during my REU at UCLA. The model is a system of partial differential equations that simulates the behavior of criminals and where they may accumulate, hot spots. I have proved a prior bounds for the partial differential equations in both one-dimensional and higher dimensional case, which proves the attractiveness and density of criminals in the given area will not be unlimitedly high. In addition, I have found some local bifurcation points in the model.

The regularity theory of the degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equation is studied. First, the equation is considered on a compact Kahler manifold without boundary. Accordingly, some background information on Kahler geometry is presented. The problem of using the α,0 and the α, β-quasi periodic transformations within a finite element method in studying electromagnetic waves in a periodic space is addressed. We investigate an a priori error estimate for both transformations which allows us to solve our problem numerically on a uniform mesh. We study a two-scale coupled system consisting of a macroscopic elliptic equation and a microscopic parabolic equation. This system models the interplay between a gas and liquid close to equilibrium within a porous medium with distributed microstructures.
