This work reviews studies of bovine K-casein and specifically K-casein macropeptide. Properties of K-casein, its structure and heterogeneity, proteolytic activity of some milk clotting enzymes on K-casein, and K-casein sensitive bonds are discussed. Macropeptides of other species are also presented. The carbohydrate moieties of bovine macropeptide together with their biological and physiological functions are reviewed. This thesis report investigates the effect on cellcell junction proteins when the Na,K-ATPase (NKA) is inhibited. The main goal is to develop an understanding of how the NKA activity regulates the cell junction proteins. The investigated proteins are the adherens junction protein ECadherin, and the tight junction proteins Occludin and Claudin7.The NKA is inhibited by introducing the cardiotonic steroid Ouabain to the cells. The activity coefficients of glycylglycine and DL, alpha-aminobutyric acid in four aqueous electrolyte solutions (+NaCI, +NaBr, +KCI and +KBr) were obtained at 298.2K. The mean ionic activity coefficient of the electrolyte in aqueous solutions containing these biomolecules was determined from measurements of the potential differences of a cation and an anion ion-selective-electrodes, each measured versus a double junction reference electrode.<br>For systems containing glycylglycine, the results show that the nature of the anion has a major effect on the activity coefficients of glycylglycine.

Abstract Since 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMI) has a relatively wide antibacterial spectrum, and low toxicity to humans, it is widely used as a bactericide and fungicide, or a slime control agent for a cooling tower. The minimum inhibitory concentration of CMI for E. coli K-12 was 1.6 mg/l. Short-time (~45 min) exposure of E. coli K-12 to 20 mg/l CMI prolonged the lag phase of cell growth. Abstract:
We have taken a molecular approach to clone cellular targets of calcium/calmodulin (Ca2+/CaM). A 35S-labeled recombinant CaM was used as a probe to screen various cDNA expression libraries. One of the isolated clones from petunia codes for the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) which catalyzes the conversion of glutamate to g-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The activity of plant GAD has been shown to be dramatically enhanced in response to cold and heat shock, anoxia, drought, mechanical manipulations and by exogenous application of the stress phytohormone ABA in wheat roots. p-Methoxycinnamic acid (p-MCA) is a cinnamic acid derivative that shows various pharmacologic actions such as neuroprotective and hepatoprotective activities. To examine the insulinotropic activity of p-MCA, the perfused rat pancreas and a pancreatic β-cell line, INS-1 were used in the studies. P-MCA increased insulin secretion from the perfused rat pancreas and INS-1 cells in a concentration-dependent manner.
