This thesis explores current assumptions surrounding why homeless people use outreach service programmes from a social psychological perspective. Prevalence of tobacco smoking amongst those in treatment for opiate dependence is almost five times greater than that of the general population. Despite this, very few of those undergoing treatment for opiate addiction receive help to stop smoking. Contingency management (CM) is a behavioural intervention, based on the principles of operant conditioning, where desired behaviours are positively reinforced with some form of reward.
