This thesis is a comparative study of optimal design-based univariate stratification as applied to highly skewed populations such as those observed in business and agricultural surveys. Optimal stratification is a widely used method for reducing the variance or cost of estimates, and this work considers various optimal stratification algorithms, and in particular optimal boundary algorithms, to support this objective. Abstract:

A series of anthropogenic disturbance conditions have altered the vegetation of the southern Appalachians during the past 200-years. The objective of this research was to identify the nature and timing of these vegetation changes in order to better understand the underlying causes. A total of 304 land surveys were collected for a small agricultural watershed from early settlement in 1787 through to the present day. Witness corners recorded tree species, shrubs, stumps, snags and non vegetative markers. Types of witness corners were tallied and tested for shifts in frequency across time periods

The purpose of this study was to identify the executive skills employed by County Extension Directors (CEDs), Trade Association Directors (TADs) and Team Leaders/Chiefs-of-party (TL/COPs), to determine which frequently used executive skills were common to all three positions and to identify the major source of executive skill acquisition.
