Hayward, Michael Clifford. "A comparative study of optimal stratification in business and agricultural surveys." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mathematics and Statistics, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5697.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study of optimal design-based univariate stratification as applied to highly skewed populations such as those observed in business and agricultural surveys. Optimal stratification is a widely used method for reducing the variance or cost of estimates, and this work considers various optimal stratification algorithms, and in particular optimal boundary algorithms, to support this objective. We first provide a background to the theory of stratification and stratified random sampling, and extend this through the derivation of optimal allocation strategies. We then ex

Abstract:
A series of anthropogenic disturbance conditions have altered the vegetation of the southern Appalachians during the past 200-years. The objective of this research was to identify the nature and timing of these vegetation changes in order to better understand the underlying causes. A total of 304 land surveys were collected for a small agricultural watershed from early settlement in 1787 through to the present day. Witness corners recorded tree species, shrubs, stumps, snags and non vegetative markers. Types of witness corners were tallied and tested for shifts in frequency across time periods

The subject of this study is the rural settlements in Classical Greece. There is no doubt that there were various factors determined the ancient settlement patterns in Greek countryside. Geographical conditions, socio-economic and political structures can be regarded as major significant factors behind the settlement practices of ancient societies. Analysis of the executive skills employed by CEDs and TL/COPs (the TADs were excluded from this analysis for statistical reasons) revealed 34 frequently used executive skills common to both groups.
