Abstract:
The Contemporary American Survival Filminvestigates and breaks down the contemporary American Survival Film (fromCast Awayonwards), focusing on film, television, literature and video games. In the contemporary (and highly popular) American survival film, a lone figure is lost, trapped or stuck. Whether a desert island, cramped canyon, floating raft or the Alaskan tundra, the space cuts the characters off from their loved ones, communication technologies, transport or a means of escape. The sun burns flesh, the dry air dehydrates, the lack of food starves, the snow chills bodies and the sharp r

Abstract:
As the first cultural history of Palestinian aviation,Palestine in the Airreveals civil aviation’s role in the ‘question of Palestine’ over the past century. How do Palestinians—as individuals, communities, and as a nascent state—engage with the air? How does their systemic exclusion from aerial agency inform dominant and counter-narratives of culture and modernity? International civil aviation is a powerful tool for the disenfranchisement of Palestinian statehood, connectivity, and mobility. Yet, Palestinians have constantly sought to harness aviation as a legitimate component of modern state

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the relationship between 1940s radio and cinema. While classic noirs began to flourish at the cinema, most Americans listened to radio for about four hours a day over some nine hundred stations, most of which were affiliated with one of four large commercial networks that centralized content. During these years, drama formats were second only to music as the most common network offering in the evening; crime and mystery shows prospered especially well. Although constituting only 13 percent of evening drama in the mid-1930s, the category rose to 33 percent during the war,

Abstract:
Drawing from over a decade of research and writings, this book takes you on an epic journey through the history of Indian Parallel Cinema (1968 – 1995). India, the late 1960s. Something was in the air. A film manifesto penned by passionate cinephiles called for a new cinema. An exciting generation of iconoclastic filmmakers were on the march, the first to graduate from the newly incarnated Film and Television Institute of India, seizing the moment to forge one of the first major post-colonial film movements. What emerged was an unprecedented level of creativity, merging international influence

Abstract:
For more than a century, the origin story of the American film industry has been that the founders of Paramount and Fox invented the feature film, that Universal created the star system, and that these three companies (along with the heads of MGM and Warner Bros.) were responsible for developing the multi-billion-dollar business we now know as Hollywood. Unfortunately for history, this is simply not true. Andrew A. Erish's definitive history of this important but oft-forgotten studio compels a reassessment of the birth and development of motion pictures in America. Founded in 1897, the Vitagra
