Fatigue is one of the critical design aspects with immense significance where thefatigue life of a material can be stated as the number of cycles that a componentcan withstand under a particular type of loading without failure. This helpsin maintenance and servicing of a component reducing the chance of failure duringoperation of the component. Direct lift control for aircraft has been around in the aeronautical industry for decades but is mainly used in commercial aircraft with dedicated direct lift control surfaces. The focus of this thesis is to investigate if direct lift control is feasible for a fighter aircraft, similar to Saab JAS 39 Gripen, without dedicated control surfaces. The modelled system is an aircraft that is inherently unstable and contains nonlinearities both in its aerodynamics and in the form of limited control surface deflection and deflection rates. Abstract:
This thesis presents investigations on the potential lift augmentation of a Tip Thruster for driving a rotating wing (lifting surface) in a monocopter configuration, to take advantage of the higher efficiency potential for larger lifting surfaces. This has the ability of significantly increasing lift force than what would otherwise be possible by the small Tip Thrusters. Furthermore, low thrust-to-weight hover ability and the exemplification of the monocopter concept can be achieved by the use of a Tip Thruster. Blade Element Theory (BET) methods were developed as a tool for rapid monocopter p

Knepper, Angela Marie. "Examination of three candidate technologies for high-lift devices on an aircraft wing." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/1058.

Abstract:
A research programme was initiated to examine three candidate high-lift technologies, which would, if implemented, simplify the mechanical complexity of the multiple component trailing-edge devices traditionally employed on civil transport aircraft. Experimental studies were undertaken with the aim of examining each technology in terms of its potential to favourably influence boundary layer development and improve the aerodynamic characteristics of a high-lift configuration. Preliminary studies of triangular serrated geometries, at the trailing edge of a modified flat plate, highlighted that t

Nowadays, the competition among airlines seriously depend upon the saving operating costs, with the premise that not to degrade its services quality. Especially in the face of increasingly scarce oil resources, reducing fleets operational fuel consumption, is an important means to improve profits. Aircraft fuel economy is determined by operational management strategies and application technologies. The application of technologies mainly refers to airplane’s engine performance, Weight efficiency and aerodynamic characteristics. A market competitive aircraft should thoroughly consider to all of
