Abstract:
Alchornea laxiflora is one of the underutilized tropical plants in Nigeria. The extract from the leaf has been shown to contain certain phytochemical principles which have been linked to some of its medicinal uses. The effect of Alchornea laxiflora aqueous leaf extract on the level of the total- and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) - cholesterols in the serum, liver, and kidney of rats was evaluated in this study. Twelve rats were grouped into three containing four each. Group A (control) was administered with only distilled water. Groups B and C were administered with aqueous extract of Alchorn

The antioxidant activities of hexane extract of freshly commuted roots (HR) of Alchornea laxiflora on liver damage were examined using in vivo sodium arsenate-induced oxidative damage model in male Wistar rats weighing between 150 and 200 g. The animals were grouped into two groups of four animals, group 1 animals were given 1ml of sodium-arsenate (2mg/kg) for 2 days and then treated with graded dosage (0.5, 1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg body weight) HR of Alchornea laxiflora for 10days, while group 2 animals were given the same graded dosage HR extract of Alchornea laxiflora for 10 days but in addi

Alchornea laxiflora is used in Ibibio ethnomedicine for the treatment of various diseases such as pains. This work was designed to validate and confirm the ethnomedical use of this plant in the treatment of pain. The ethanol stembark extract of Alchornea laxiflora (141-424 mg/kg) was evaluated for analgesic activity against experimentally-induced pains in mice using acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin-induced hind paw licking and thermally-induced pain models. The stembark extract significantly (p<0.005-0.001) inhibited pains in all the models tested in a dose-dependent manner. The extra

Aims: African trypanosomosis is a zoonotic tropical disease of Sub-Saharan Africa. Its etiology is a group of extracellular protozoans of the genera Trypanosoma which has numerous species including Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Inavailability of vaccines and numerous side effects arising from few available antitrypanosomal drugs gives the indication for search for local alternatives. This experimental study investigates the antitrypanosomal efficacy of chloroform extract of A. laxiflora leaves in wistar albino rats infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The study investigated the median lethal dose and the effects of the aqueous and methanol extracts of Alchornea laxiflora in three mouse models of central and peripheral analgesia, the hot plate, acetic acid-induced abdominal writhes and the tail immersion tests. This was with a view to providing information on the acute toxicity, analgesic effects and the possible mechanism of analgesia. The LD50 for the aqueous and methanol extracts of A. laxiflora in the oral route was > 1600 mg/kg respectively, and found to be safe in animals. However, the LD50 (i.p.), was found to be 400 mg/kg for the
