Abstract:
Alexander III of Macedon (356-323 BC) has for over 2000 years been one of the best recognized names from antiquity. He set about creating his own legend in his lifetime, and subsequent writers and political actors developed it. He acquired the surname 'Great' by the Roman period, and the Alexander Romance transmitted his legendary biography to every language of medieval Europe and the Middle East. As well as an adventurer who sought the secret of immortality and discussed the purpose of life with the naked sages of India, he became a model for military achievement as well as a religious prophet bringing Christianity (in the Crusades) and Islam (in the Qur'an and beyond) to the regions he conquered. This innovative and fascinating volume explores these and many other facets of his reception in various cultures around the world, right up to the present and his role in gay activism.

Abstract:
The book is a biography of Antigonus II Gonatas, king of Macedon from 276 to 239, and a history of the Greek mainland in the third century BCE. It falls into two parts. The first part covers the salient history of the decades preceding Antigonus’s accession to the throne, including what little is known of his early life, and the second part is a partly chronological, partly thematic account of his reign. The first part, which begins roughly with the death of Alexander the Great in 323, focuses on the history of Macedon, Sparta, Athens, the Aetolian and Achaean Confederacies, and Ptolemaic Egypt. The main recurrent themes of the second part are warfare (Antigonus vs Celts, Antigonus vs the Ptolemies of Egypt, Antigonus vs the Greeks, Antigonus vs Alexander of Corinth), administration (Antigonus’s reformation of Macedon, Antigonus’s methods of controlling the Greeks), and culture (Antigonus’s court). Antigonus emerges as one of the great kings of ancient Macedon, who stabilized the country after a period of chaos and held powerful foes at bay. But the successes of his early years as king were offset by the increasing power of the Greek confederacies, and his legacy was the perpetuation of the hatred the Greeks felt for their Macedonian overlords. This in turn ultimately made it possible for the Romans to replace the Macedonians as the arbiters of the Greeks’ fate.

Abstract:
Eurydice (c. 410–340s BCE) played a part in the public life of ancient Macedonia, the first royal Macedonian woman known to have done so. She was the wife of Amyntas III, the mother of Philip II (and two other short-lived kings of Macedonia), and grandmother of Alexander the Great. Her career marked a turning point in the role of royal women in Macedonian monarchy, one that coincided with the emergence of Macedonia as a great power in the Hellenic world. This study examines the nature of her public role as well as the factors that contributed its expansion and the expansion of Macedonia. Some ancient sources picture Eurydice as a murderous adulteress willing to attempt the elimination of her husband and her three sons for the sake of her lover, whereas others portray her as a doting and heroic mother whose actions led to the preservation of the throne for her sons. Both traditions describe her as the leader of a faction, as well as an active figure at court and in international affairs. Eurydice also participated in the construction of the public image of the dynasty. Archaeological discoveries since the 1980s enable us to better understand this development.
