Three competing phylogenetic hypotheses for the genus Alytes (midwife toads) are evaluated. Based on quantitative coding of protein characters the most parsimonious solution shows a sister taxon relationship for Alytes dickhilleni and A. muletensis. The alternatives in which A. obstetricans has its sister group in either A. dickhilleni or A. muletensis lack support. AbstractWe address the issue of whether call alternation is a mechanism for diminishing call overlap between male midwife toads who are competing acoustically. Additionally, we study the effect of call overlap on the calling behavior of males and on female preferences. AbstractA previous study reported that large males had greater mating success than small males in two species of midwife toads. A behavioural mechanism that would explain such a pattern is sought. Dominant frequency is inversely correlated with male size in Alytes obstetricans and A. cisternasii. In both cases, two-speaker playback tests with synthetic calls show that females have a significant preference for calls with low frequencies. The results shows that female preference may impose directional sexual selection upon a static acoustic character that is correlated with male size. Male Alyte

Straipsnyje pateikiamas hidrocheminis Nemuno upės vertinimas 2006–2015 m. laikotarpiu. Analizuojami ir aptariami hidrocheminių tyrimų duomenys (biocheminis deguonies suvartojimas, bendrasis azotas ir bendrasis fosforas), lyginama upės būklės ekologinės klasės kaita. Tyrimais nustatyta, jog 70 % vidutinių metinių bendrojo azoto koncentracijų atitinka labai gerą ekologinę upės būklę. Bandrojo fosforo kaitos linijinis trendas aukščiau ir žemiau Alytaus turi tendenciją mažėti. The water loss levels are very different between European countries as water loss varies from 7% to 50%. According to data from the Lithuanian Water Supply Association, in 2015 about 124 mln. m³ of ground water was supplied to the network, but only 94 mln. m³ of it was sold, while the remaining share represented water losses – 30 mln. m³ per year. Our overall goal was to engineer crop plants with enhanced resistance to Orobanche (broomrape) based on the inducible expression of sarcotoxin-like peptide (SLP). A secondary objective was to localize small proteins such as SLP in the host-parasite union in order to begin characterizing the mechanism of SLP toxicity to Orobanche.
