This article reviews three recent books critical of America's new “imperial” foreign policy, examines whether the United States can properly be compared to empires of the past, and identifies three aspects of contemporary American policy that may well be called imperialist. It also addresses some of the main objections to recent U.S. foreign policy made by American realist scholars and argues that traditional interstate realism can no longer readily apply to the problem ofAmerican unipolar preponderance over an anarchical, nuclear-armed world.

Abstract Recent fiction by Asian Americans grapples with, on the one hand, the waning stakes and political failure of American identity (a democratic realism), and, on the other hand, the allure of Asia’s simultaneous capitalist challenge and alternative to US-based racial form (a capitalist realism). This article argues that the tensions and contradictions of this conjuncture are registered in recent Asian American novels via national allegory and reads the aesthetic partition between comedy and tragedy in Marie Myung-ok Lee’s 2022 novel The Evening Hero as exemplary of this formal approach.I

He argues that despite vast changes in the international system, realism remains relevant as an accurate description of human nature and hence of the interactions among nations. Proposed on the occasion of the First Congress of the Soviet writers in Moscow in 1934, the notion of realism coming about in the theoretical debate on architecture in the early thirties of the twentieth century appears to be an ambiguous notion, straddling between idealism and ideology, innovative research and historicist formalism. The failure of socialist realism and the crisis of its emphatic and monumentalist architectural imagery, clearly shows the utopian character of the realist "dream," but also, in some ways, its imaginative power of striving to build a better world. There are two mentalities of rule, idealism and realism, which differ in their assumptions about how far government policy can be guided by principles alone. The late 1990s were a highpoint for idealism, but the 21st century has proved to be an age of realism. During recurrent crises, American leaders have bent principles and pledged instead to “do whatever it takes” to protect vital interests. The conditions that encourage the realist mentality—turbulence, uncertainty, and danger—will persist in coming decades. We should learn more about how realist statecraft works in democratic states.

The aim of the study is to illustrate the importance of magic realism in American women's fiction in the late twentieth century. The term magic realism, which has traditionally been associated with Latin American men's writing, has been known by different, and often contradictory, definitions. It may be argued that, properly defined, it can be a valid term to describe a number of characteristics common to a corpus of work, and can be considered as an aesthetic category different from others such as Surrealism or Fantastic literature, with which it has often been compared. Although the relationship between literature and science has been a major focus of research in the last few decades, the influence of complex systems science on recent American fiction has not yet been comprehensively documented. In the first section of the thesis, I claim that the origin of systems fiction can be found in the nineteenth-century social novel, which displayed significant knowledge of system function. The year 2020 will be remembered as one of the most challenging in modern history. Latin America and the Caribbean lost 7.4% of GDP, the largest drop on record in a single year. The region is expected to recover in 2021 but faces a hazardous time ahead. Most countries will require some type of adjustment to maintain fiscal sustainability.
