Abstract:

This thesis is based on narrative interviews with older people who live with pain and explores the meanings they develop. From their stories it emerged that constructions of ageing shape the meaning of pain. Pain is consequently constructed as `ordinary', non-disruptive pain that is a natural consequence of ageing. However, the narrators also developed alternative meanings. They constructed their pain as unique and disruptive, contested age-based definitions of their pain, and resisted medical intervention. Suffering is a fundamental experience of the human condition. Whereas the arts and humanities have struggled to make sense of this condition, no concerted effort has taken place in nursing. The intention of this thesis was to demonstrate that, with in-depth analysis, a carefully and deliberately constructed narrative could be revealed within the ceiling paintings of Skelmorlie Aisle, Largs, Scotland (c.1638). The ceiling adorned a burial aisle, which was erected by Sir Robert Montgomerie, seventh of Skelmorlie, in honour of his wife, Dame Margaret Douglas. The view of making sense of a person’s reality through the stories they tell about their lives, developed by Bruner (1991) and McAdams (1993) is the theoretical perspective used to reveal what offenders’ life-stories uncover about their offending action. Interviews with 63 incarcerated offenders and 90 non-incarcerated males’ explored three life-episodes: a Significant Event (SE), crime or deviant act, and life as a film.
