Abstract:
The genus Apotropina (Diptera, Chloropidae) has a global distribution with more than 80 valid described species, of which 22 are known to occur in Australia. The Australian Apotropina fauna is poorly studied, with many species known from single type specimens, more with the morphology of the other sex unknown, and there have been no new species descriptions since 1959. Here, we describe two new species from Australia, A. maculigena Riccardi, sp. nov. and A. popeye Ang, sp. nov., and provide an updated illustrated key. This study explores the identity and function of the mostly unnoticed figure of Shaʿtiqatu, a creature who plays a pivotal role in the story of the Ugaritic King Kirta. The exploration of this under appreciated figure is situated in the context of Ugaritic apotropea and within the better documented Mesopotamian cultural backdrop. A counterpart article provides the philological and epigraphic analysis to the Shaʿtiqatu Narrative found in ktu 1.16.5.10–1.16.6.14.1

Abstract:
In the early Middle Ages, the Crimean Goths had jewelry that were endowed with apotropaic or healing properties: hollow jewelry — containers for amulets (cylindrical cases, bulla pendants, earrings with a polyhedron); bells, the ringing of which was believed to ward off evil spirits; composite “noisy” metal pendants with a core of wood, walnut or fruit stone; “brooch” necklaces with large beads and unusual pendants. The article characterizes these objects, identifies a group of analogies, and determines their purpose on the basis of written sources and ethnographic data. On the basis of the st

Abstract:
This chapter poses the question of the conditions under which dance is inscribed on the Western stage. From the point of view of general anthropology, the history of choreography as such extends only over a few pages. Choreographic history isolates a relatively recent—and probably distinctively Western—institution against a background murmur of millennia of festivals, trance, apotropical rituals, and cures for the possessed. Choreographic spectacle separates dances from their social or religious effects, depriving the participant of any real involvement with what they see. This Western inventi
