تطمح هذه المساهمة إلى تبيان بعض مظاهر البحث التطبيقي الذي توجّهه اهتمامات اللسانيات التوليدية، وهو بحث يصدق عليه وصف اللسانيات المُطبّقة (linguistic applied). أما اللسانيات التطبيقة (applied linguistic) فتتحدّد بمُخرجاتها التقنية والصناعية شأنها شأن الفيزياء والكيمياء التطبيقيتين. بالاستناد إلى هذا التمييز، تسعى الدراسة، من خلال استعراض النقاش العلمي الذي يهيمن في الأوساط العلمية حاليا، إلى توضيح كيفيات رسم فرْضية الأساس الفطري للمعرفة اللغوية خريطةا لبحثَ التجريبي الذي يرصد مظاهر النحوية بدراسته الميدانية لحالات موسومة (marked)؛ من ذلك، مثلا، أبحاث بيكِرتون D. Bickerton في إطار فرضيته المسمّاة: البرنامج الأحيائي (bioprogram) التي تبلورت في سياق الدراسة الميدانية-التجريبية لمسار تَحوُّل الرّطانات (pidgin) عبر الأجيال إلى لغات مزيج (creole) ذات بنية نحوية غنية. وقد ساعدت هذه الأبحاث الميدانية في فهم بنية لغة الإشارة المستعملة من قبل الصّمّ-البُكم من خلال دراسة حالة نيكارغوا وقدمت براهين تجريبية لفائدة أطروحة الفطرية. وغرضنا، من هذا، تحقيق غايتين، أولاهما تحديد محتوى معقول لما اصطلحنا على تسميته باللسانيات المُطبّقة. أمّا الغاية الثانية، وهي التي يُحقّقها القسم الثاني من هذه المقالة، فتتوخى عرض مناقشة تشومسكي لأعمال اللسانيات المطبّقة -التي تبنّت إمّا مُقاربة عُضوية للملكة اللغوية وإما مقاربة إيثولوجية (ethology)- في أفق دعوته إلى أهمية توحيد اللسانيات والعلوم المعرفية بالعلوم العصبية وعلم الأحياء.

This paper looks at some of the underlying reasons which might explain the uncertainty surrounding applied linguistics as an academic enquiry. The opening section traces the emergence of the field through its professional associations and publications and identifies second and foreign language (L2) teaching as its primary activity. The succeeding section examines the extent to which L2 pedagogy, as a branch of applied linguistics, is conceived within a theoretical linguistic framework and how this might have changed during a historical period that gave rise to Chomskyan linguistics and the notion of communicative competence. The concluding remarks offer explanations to account for the persistence of linguistic parameters to define applied linguistics

The aim of this article is to analyze the nature of the historical and contemporary social contexts within which applied linguistics in Africa emerged, and is currently practiced. The article examines the challenges ‘local’ applied Linguistics in Africa is confronted with as it tries to amplify applied linguistic programs emanating from Europe and North America. The article argues that seemingly progressive applied linguistic projects interconnect in consolidating a western view of Africa in postcolonial Africa. In this way these projects end up mirroring the very theories which they seek to challenge.

Second language acquisition research (sla) is the systematic exploration of the conditions that make the acquisition of a foreign language possible, both in natural and in instructional settings. Its objects of study are the biological, linguistic, psychological, and emotional makeup of language learners and the educational, social, and institutional context of learning and teaching. Whereas language as a linguistic system is studied through the metalanguage of linguistics (phonology, syntax, and semantics), language learning, as psycholinguistic process and sociolinguistic discourse, is researched through the metadiscourse of applied linguistics: psycho- and sociolinguistics, anthropological and educational linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, stylistics, and composition and literacy studies. These fields illuminate what it means to learn to speak, read, write, and interact in a foreign language, what it means to appropriate for oneself the national idiom of communities that share a history and a culture that are different from one's own. SLA provides the applied linguistic metadiscourse for the practice of language learning and teaching.

Abstract:
This contribution analyses the argumentative premises underlying applied linguistic research conducted in the area of English-medium instruction. Applied linguistics not only studies language as it is used in the real world but is widely understood as an approach through which real-world problems in matters of language can be solved. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that applied linguistics is commonly used as a diagnostic perspective in English-medium instruction (EMI) research where it aims to provide insight into issues in need of fixing or improvement. Such studies are not conducted in an argumentative vacuum: they are embedded in a background process of policymaking, debate and discussion by stakeholders and policymakers who are involved in the introduction of English as an international language in higher education. This paper aims to highlight the argumentative backdrop against which applied linguistic research into EMI is construed and legitimised. Analysing conference abstracts in the field of EMI, the paper seeks to draw attention to everyday logic and beliefs applied linguists engage in when submitting paper proposals for conferences. It calls for a critical applied linguistic research agenda which foregrounds the potential ideological effects everyday conceptualisations of language have on EMI research and, ultimately, on EMI policymaking.

It portrays about the emergence of this field that is changing with different periods by its professional and academic activities. The third part of a study demonstrates the scope of applied linguistics and its relation to other disciplines. It suggests the future development of applied linguistics with the emerging new scientific disciplines. The fourth section highlights a hot debate of a current scenario that shows the vitality of applied linguists with respect to Linguistic Human Rights (LHRs). The paper aims to explain the importance of applied linguistics around with current perspective of World. Later, it reveals the real situation to violation of Linguistic Human Rights (LHRs) that are specifically contextualized within states of Pakistan and India. Along with this, it also portrays the picture of the future World to a case if no sincere efforts are taken to protect the Linguistic Human Rights, it can prove fatal for researchers and teachers of applied linguistics in general. The final section concludes a study with an over view of applied linguistics to its historical perspective and its relation with other disciplines, specifically with Linguistic Human Rights.

In this paper, I look at three polemical issues in Applied Linguistics. I argue, first of all, that the desire for a stable definition of applied linguistics has by no means prevented research in the discipline. Secondly, I contend that the notion or "tradition" of "linguistics applied" (corpus linguistics or lexicography) is broader and more serious than "applicationism" (the use of linguistic formalisms, artificial practices, and terminology) in teaching material that are problematic and motivated by commercial interests. Thirdly, I argue that Educational Linguistics and Applied Linguistics have overlapping research objectives. In the course of the paper, I present some reservations about Educational Linguistics.

Abstract:
Codeswitching between languages is a uniquely bilingual mode of communication. The purpose of this dissertation is to enhance the current body of knowledge dealing with the phenomenon by analysing samples of speech produced by twenty-six Spanish/English bilingual children ranging in age from eight to twelve. Methods of analysis include theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and educational linguistics. A discussion of relevant codeswitching research covering the past thirty years is presented. The data were collected during a reading study focusing on miscue analysis. The children read stories in English and retold them in both Spanish and English. The analysis considers the data from the four previously mentioned points of view. The linguistic analysis looks at the locations of switched constituents within the sentence and the frequency with which those constituents are switched. The data of this study are compared with that of other researchers, and a consideration of a formal grammar of codeswitching is presented. The sociolinguistic analysis addresses the effect of social and stylistic variables on codeswitching. The psycholinguistic analysis of codeswitching covers lexical storage, editing phenomena, and developmental aspects. Finally, some aspects of the education of bilinguals are considered by analysing the effect of the printed word on language switching and dialect shifting . The application of the results of the analysis to both theoretical issues and practical concerns is explored along with suggested areas for future research. The analyses show that young children's codeswitching initially favors less complex structures and is influenced by few social variables. As they grow older, they become more comfortable with switching grammatically complex structures, and they become aware of a greater variety of social factors. A separate grammar is not necessary for a complete description of codeswitching; a modified interdependance model of the two grammars can account for the codeswitching mode. Lastly, the written language becomes part of the speech situation in the classroom and affects the choice of language or dialect spoken.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of creating linguistic taggers for resource-poor languages using existing taggers in resource rich languages. Linguistic taggers are classifiers that map individual words or phrases from a sentence to a set of tags. Part of speech tagging and named entity extraction are two examples of linguistic tagging. Linguistic taggers are usually trained using supervised learning algorithms. This requires the existence of labeled training data, which is not available for many languages. We describe an approach for assigning linguistic tags to sentences in a target (resource-poor) language by exploiting a linguistic tagger that has been configured in a source (resource-rich) language. The approach does not require that the input sentence be translated into the source language. Instead, projection of linguistic tags is accomplished through the use of a parallel corpus, which is a collection of texts that are available in a source language and a target language. The correspondence between words of the source and target language allows us to project tags from source to target language words. The projected tags are further processed to compute the final tags of the target language words. A system for part of speech (POS) tagging of French language sentences using an English language POS tagger and an English/French parallel corpus has been implemented and evaluated using this approach. A parallel corpus of the source and target languages might not be readily available for many language pairs. To deal with this problem, we describe a system for automatic acquisition of aligned, bilingual corpora from pre-specified domains on the World Wide Web. The system involves automatic indexing of a given domain using a web crawler, identifying pairs of pages that are translations of one another, and aligning bilingual texts at the sentence level. Le sujet de cette thèse est la création de marqueurs linguistiques pour les langues qui sont pauvres en ressources en utilisant les marqueurs des langues riches en ressources. Les marqueurs linguistiques sont des classificateurs qui conjuguent des mots ou des collections des mots d'une phrase à un ensemble d'étiquettes. La description de nature grammatical et l'extraction des entités nommées sont deux exemples de marquage linguistique. L'apprentissage supervisé est l'outil principal utilisé pour créer des marqueurs linguistiques. Cela exige l'existence de données de formation marqués qui n'est pas disponible dans plusieurs langues. This study developed out of my own experiences as a high school English teacher and my engagements with the intertwined issues of language and diversity in the classroom.The study foregrounds the nature of students' and teachers' engagements with linguistic diversity and the role of the teacher in critical literacy. In South Africa there is very little classroom based research which shows how students and teachers are engaging with issues of diversity, power and inequality, post-apartheid. This research focuses on how my students and I interact with issues of linguistic diversity in an English Home Language, Grade 8 classroom context using critical literacy pedagogy as the means by which to engage with these issues.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO
O presente trabalho visa investigar a produção escrita de alunos de uma escola pública da rede estadual do Rio de Janeiro, buscando observar o grau de letramento em língua portuguesa como primeira língua, apresentado por esses alunos ao ingressarem no Ensino Médio e quando estão prestes a conclui-lo. A pesquisa insere-se na área de Linguística Aplicada, voltada para a relevância social do uso da língua (Moita Lopes, 2006), adotando uma abordagem textual à escrita (Hyland, 2002) e seguindo pressupostos teórico-metodológicos da Lingüística Sistêmico-Funcional, que se ocupa do estudo da língua enquanto sistema de significados e suas funções nos contextos culturais e situacionais. Enfocando o estudo do uso da metáfora gramatical (Halliday, 1994) em textos escolares, através do emprego de nominalizações, este trabalho propõe as seguintes questões: 1) Os alunos do Ensino Médio empregam a metáfora gramatical em seus textos produzidos em sala de aula? 2) O uso de uma linguagem gramaticalmente mais metafórica aumenta durante o ciclo do Ensino Médio? 3) O uso de nominalizações contribui para a melhoria no letramento dos alunos? O conjunto de textos analisados neste estudo consiste em um questionário social, respondido por 40 (quarenta) alunos de duas turmas, uma do primeiro ano e outra do terceiro ano, para que possamos entender quem são os sujeitos sóciohistoricamente construídos, que compõem estas salas de aula. Exercícios de transformações de estruturas verbais em nominais foram feitos por alunos do primeiro ano e do terceiro do Ensino Médio, e analisados para observar o domínio da metáfora gramatical através do uso de nominalizações. Redações escritas por esses alunos (N=50) também foram analisadas com o objetivo de verificar o uso da metáfora gramatical no momento da elaborar os textos escritos em sala de aula. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam que os alunos apresentam um maior domínio da metáfora gramatical quando chegam ao terceiro ano, entretanto não fazem uso de uma linguagem gramaticalmente mais metafórica ao redigir seus textos em sala de sala de aula, mostrando certa dificuldade em fazer uso amplo de transformações gramaticais na escrita.
The present work aims at investigating the written production of students at a state school in Rio de Janeiro, in order to verify the degree of literacy in Portuguese as a first language of the students as they enroll in secondary school and when they are about to complete it. This Applied Linguistics research, emphasizes the social relevance of the use of language (Moita Lopes, 2006), adopting a textual approach to writing (Hyland, 2002) and following theoretical and methodological assumptions of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, which views language as a system of meanings and functions in both situational and cultural contexts. Focusing on the study of the use of grammatical metaphor (Halliday, 1994) in school texts, through the use of nominalizations, this research proposes the following questions: 1) Do students in secondary school employ the grammatical metaphor in their texts produced in the classroom? 2) Does the use of a more grammatically metaphorical language increase during the cycle of high school? 3) Does the use of nominalizations help to improve the students’ literacy? The set of texts analyzed in this study consists of a social questionnaire, answered by 40 (forty) students in two classes, one of the first year and the other of the third year, so that we could understand who the socio-historically constructed subjects that compound these classrooms are. Exercises that aim at transforming verbal structures into nominal were done by students of the first and third years of secondary school, and analyzed to observe the control of grammatical metaphor through the use of nominalizations. Essays written by these students (N = 50) were also analyzed with the purpose of verifying the use of grammatical metaphor while writing the texts in the classroom. Research results indicate that students have a greater control of grammatical metaphor when they achieve the third year of secondary school. However, they do not use a more grammatically metaphorical language to write their texts in the classroom, showing certain difficulty of using largely grammatical transformations in writing.

Legal study requires not only the learning of new content, but also the learning of a new academic discourse with its own lexico-semantic, syntactic, and discoursal features. This thesis explores the answering of legal problem questions as an important and distinct new genre that undergraduates studying law units need to achieve competence in. In order to delineate the general features of this genre, systemic functional linguistic (SFL) analyses were performed on a series of texts (a tutorial question, an assignment question, and an examination question) written by lecturers in the introductory Commerce course Principles of Commercial Law as exemplars of the answering of legal problem questions. SFL analyses were also conducted on a series of student texts (both native and non-native English speaking students' answers to the examination question) which showed that considerable difficulties exist not only with the content, but also with the linguistic demands of writing in this particular genre. It follows that students may require specific training in "picking up the principles". The pedagogical implications for both content and language staff teaching in this area are explored with particular reference to tertiary ESL/EFL students.

Abstract:
Interpreting as a profession has become the center of interest and focus for many linguists, translation scholars, translators, and professionals. Interpreting has played a vital role in bridging the gap and maintaining relationships among people of different languages. The output of interpreting, unlike written translation is entirely oral leaving behind no written proof. Interpreting is an activity or a process which consists of the facility of oral and sign language communicated either consecutively or simultaneously between two or more speakers who are not speaking the same language. Interpretation is the act of transposing a message from one language to another immediately in real time. The study sheds light mostly upon non- linguistic factors in the process of interpreting which can be of no less important than the linguistic ones. The aim of the study is to provide an overview of interpreting in general with a detailed description of the non- linguistic strategies or skills from the perspective of interpreting process. Bearing these in tactics in mind, the interpreter tackles the interpreting problems and difficulties in a more skillful way.

Abstract:
The process of mastering, systematizing and automatizing systems language skills occupies a key place in the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages and cultures. Following the main trends of modern applied linguistics in the field of multilingual research, we hypothesize the advisability of using the lexical approach in mastering the entire complex of systems skills (grammar, vocabulary, phonology, functions, discourse) in students receiving multilingual education at higher educational institutions. In order to theoretically substantiate the hypothesis, the authors carry out structural, semantic, and phonological analysis of the main lexical units (collocations). After this, linguodidactic analysis of students’ hypothetical problems and, as a result, problems related to the teaching of relevant linguistic and axiological features is carried out. At the final stage of the paper, a list of possible outcomes from the indicated linguistic and methodological problematic situations is given. This article is the first in the cycle of linguodidactic studies of the features of learning and teaching systems language skills in a multilingual educational space.

Abstract:
A growing interest in Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) programs has led to increased attention to bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism. This article describes the writing development in Spanish and English for 49 kindergarten students in a 50/50 Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program. Over the course of an academic year, the authors collected writing samples to analyze evidence of cross-linguistic resource sharing using a grounded theoretical approach to compare and contrast writing samples to determine patterns of cross-linguistic resource sharing in English and Spanish. The authors identified four patterns: phonological, syntactic, lexical, and metalinguistic awareness. Findings indicated that emergent writers applied similar strategies as older bilingual students, including lexical level code-switching, applied phonological rules of L1 to their respective L2s, and used experiential and content knowledge to write in their second language. These findings have instructional implications for both English Learners and native English speakers as well as for learning from students for program improvement.

Abstract:
One of the main tasks of applied linguistics is the solution of the problem of high-quality automated processing of natural language. The most popular methods for processing natural-language text responses for the purpose of extraction and representation of semantics should be systems that are based on the efficient combination of linguistic analysis technologies and analysis methods. Among the existing methods for analyzing text data, a valid method is used by the method using a vector model. Another effective and relevant means of extracting semantics from the text and its representation is the method of latent semantic analysis (LSA). The LSA method was tested and confirmed its effectiveness in such areas of processing the native language as modeling the conceptual knowledge of the person; information search, the implementation of which LSA shows much better results than conventional vector methods.

Public health efforts seeking to reduce disparities and promote equity must be inclusive to reach their full potential. Interventions, programs, and initiatives designed to promote health equity among Communities of Color must be culturally informed. Communities and the cultural values and practices that shape them are closely intertwined, creating opportunities for a more intentional approach to community engagement. Yosso’s framework of Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) emphasizes six forms of capital that People and Communities of Color use to thrive and succeed: social, navigational, linguistic, familial, resistant, and aspirational. We anchor our approach—culturally informed community engagement—in the core tenets of CCW. This paper discusses CCW and its applicability and utility for facilitating culturally informed community engagement in health research. In our approach, asset-based frameworks intersect with community engagement, CCW, and principles of health equity. We discuss how applying CCW to conducting community-engaged research promotes health equity, inclusive science, and authentic relationships with community partners. Lastly, we provide applied examples of community-engaged interventions that leverage cultural assets in Communities of Color to reduce disparities and promote health equity.

The article analyzes transformation of forms of degrees of comparison of adjectives in live television broadcasting. Particular attention is paid to the specific properties of different forms of degrees of comparison of adjectives. To analyze the peculiarities of their use for errors in speech of television journalists, associated with non-compliance with linguistic norms on ways to avoid these errors, to make appropriate recommendations to television journalists. The main method we use is to observe the speech of live TV journalist, we used during the study methods of comparative analysis of comparison of theoretical positions from the work of individual linguists and journalism sat down as well as texts that sounded in the speech of journalists. Our objective is to trace these transformations and develop a certain attitude towards them in our researches of the language of the media and practicing journalists to support positive trends in the development of the broadcasting on TV and give recommendations for overcoming certain negative trends. Improving the live broadcasting of television journalists, in particular the work on deepening the language skills will contribute to the modernization of some trends in the reasonable expediency of the transformation of certain phenomena, moder­nization of some tendencies concerning the reasonable expedient transformation of separate grammatical phenomena and categories and at braking and in general stopping of processes of transformation of negative unreasonable not expedient. This fully applies primarily to attempts to transform the forms of degrees of comparison of adjectives and this explains importance of the results achieved in these study.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the relationship between the views expressed in the minutes of the meetings of the Central Bank of Brazil’s Monetary Policy Committee (COPOM) and the real economy. It applies various computational linguistic machine learning algorithms to construct measures of the minutes of the COPOM. First, we create measures of the content of the paragraphs of the minutes using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Second, we build an uncertainty index for the minutes using Word Embedding and K-Means. Then, we combine these indices to create two topic-uncertainty indices. The first one is constructed from paragraphs with a higher probability of topics related to “general economic conditions”. The second topic-uncertainty index is constructed from paragraphs that have a higher probability of topics related to “inflation” and the “monetary policy discussion”. Finally, we employ a structural VAR model to explore the lasting effects of these uncertainty indices on certain Brazilian macroeconomic variables. Our results show that greater uncertainty leads to a decline in inflation, the exchange rate, industrial production and retail trade in the period from January 2000 to July 2019.

While the knowledge on immigrants’ integration consolidated through the last 50 years, the Roma studies and the research on the Roma inclusion seems at the beginning. The purpose of this research was to assess if and to what extent the Swiss experience in immigrants’ integration may inspire an efficient approach to Roma inclusion in the Romanian society. After highlighting conceptual vagueness, resemblance and difference in the overall social status of Romanian Roma and immigrants in Switzerland and official approaches to the integration or inclusion of each, the research concludes that the Romanian policy on Roma inclusion presumably can be better anchored in the integration conceptual framework and benefit from immigrants’ integration experience. The Romanian choice for framing its Roma policy as ‘inclusion’ rather than for ‘integration’ may be appropriate as it applies to a historic minority of citizens needing social justice. The use of an immigration integration policy as model for a Roma inclusion strategy is limited due to the stronger legit-imation of historic minorities for shared-ownership of public decision-making. That is the Swiss example of immigrants’ integration could only serve Romania as a minimum standard for its Roma inclusion strategy. It can benefit from the Swiss experience on immigrant's integration policy in terms of conception, coordination, monitoring and transparency may be beneficial, while the Roma political participation may find inspiration from the Swiss linguistic communities’ participatory mechanisms. The on-going reciprocal learning process connecting academia and public authorities able to transform science into action and experience in knowledge may inspire the Romanian authorities.
