Abstract:
On the basis of research in the field of learning disabilities it has been concluded that many learning disabled students can be characterized as strategy-deficient, inactive learners. However, a precise understanding of strategy training procedures is frequently obscured by researchers. The term “strategy training” needs to be defined more clearly so that the approaches are understood more universally. In this article I discuss the rationale for strategy training interventions with learning disabled children, describe three approaches that are currently being studied in the field, and discuss the issues that arise.

Abstract:
Abstract Within a parallel-group randomized control trial, pain training's impact on Respite Workers' (RW) care approaches and training evaluations was explored. RW (n = 158) from 14 organizations received pain or control training following randomization. Researchers were blind until randomization; allocations were not shared explicitly with organizations/participants. Participants completed a strategy use questionnaire immediately before and an evaluation immediately after training completion. Four-to-6 weeks later, participants completed the strategy use questionnaire and semistructured focus groups. No differences in pain approaches were noted in strategy use questionnaires. Per focus groups, both groups acquired a “knowing” about pain and applied pain-related care approaches in similarly. Pain training participants identified need for “growing and strengthening” pain knowledge. Training endorsements were favorable. RW pain training has value and may impact practice.

Abstract:
Personnel training is considered nowadays to be not only one of the core processes in personnel management, but also a signifi cant source of competitive advantage to any organization. Therefore, personnel training should be viewed as the investment in human capital. As any investment is expected to produce payoff to an organization, this highlights the need to assess the level of personnel training eff ectiveness. Numerous experts in the fi eld have attempted to develop a universal model and approach for assessing eff ectiveness of personnel training. The paper considers some of these approaches and provides comparison study thereof. Each organization is free to choose a specifi c strategy for assessing eff ectiveness of training, dependant on industrial context, specifi cs of its operations, personnel composition and profi le, etc. That is why it is important to examine the most frequently used approaches to assessment of personnel training eff ectiveness, as it allows to develop some feasible variations of approaches, which would fi t best to a given organization.

Abstract:
Seven distractible students were given instruction regarding a basic competency in mathematics, the skill to multiply decimal fractions. The effects of two treatment approaches were compared. Strategy training consisted of modeling and prompting attention behaviors and the employment of a specific strategy for solving the problems. Although accuracy rate improved, there were no reliable changes in attention using this procedure. Self-instructional training consisted of modeling, prompting, and the use of self-verbalizations to guide behavior. Attention and accuracy rate improved significantly following self-instructional training. The results provided evidence that self-instructions can enhance performance of distractible students directly in the context of an academic task.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to determine whether instruction in specific cognitive strategies, based on an information processing paradigm, could affect the reading achievement of grade one Native Indian children. One type of strategies dealt with simultaneous and sequential processing which have been shown to improve achievement in older children. The other type of strategies dealt directly with development of specific reading strategies. The study was basically an Experimental/Control by Pre/Post design. Three interventions were designed: teaching information processing strategies based on the Luria/Das model of information processing, teaching reading related tasks felt to improve linguistic awareness, a combination of the strategy and linguistic awareness programs. A fourth group was included to control for experimenter effect. All interventions were taught by certified teachers trained by the experimenter. The 36 subjects were taught in small groups for a total of 15 hours over three months. All continued to receive regular reading instruction in their classrooms. No significant group effect was found on the overall reading measure. At both the pre- and post-testings the simultaneous processing scores were significantly higher than the sequential processing scores. No group effects were found on the information processing scores. Abstract:
This thesis examines approaches consultants use to assist organizational leaders in moving strategically towards sustainability. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), is examined to understand how one can overcome and address the complex challenges that consultants face in assisting leaders to develop appropriate leadership skills and sustainability knowledge that will allow them to lead their organizations strategically towards sustainability. Two consulting firms located in London are reviewed. From this research, an ideal way of using the FSSD called the Strategic Leadership Training Framework (SLTF) is proposed as a tool to guide and supplement current approaches used by consulting firms to improve their leadership training programs. A gap analysis compares the SLTF and the current approaches used by consultants. The SLTF can be used as a tool to assist consultants to find the gaps between the approaches they use and the SLTF. Finally, emotional intelligence and a definition of sustainability are found to be a key factor for a leader to be successful when moving their organization strategically towards sustainability.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
It is widely recognized that learning to read is one of the most crucial learning processes in which children are involved at primary school. However, becoming a proficient reader is not equally easy for all learners. When it comes to the development of reading comprehension many children appear to have persistent problems. In order to meet the reading needs of students in the 21st century, educators are pressed to develop effective instructional means for teaching strategies to improve reading comprehension. The ability to read academic texts is considered one of the most crucial skills that students of English as a Second Language need to acquire. Reading comprehension has become the “essence of reading” (Dreyer & Nel, 2003:349). Literacy, and more specifically reading, is one of many areas where research has provided evidence of the potential impact of technology such as multimedia and hypermedia. If one looks broadly at the issue of technology and literacy, one of the more rewarding issues for educators is the role of technology in literacy acquisition and instruction, especially for primary grade learners (Pearson et al, 2005:3). This study aims to support the growing trend of an increasingly “paired” literacy, namely that of general literacy and computer (or technological) literacy. The study proposes that through implementing an overall blended-learning methodology for teaching learners how to use reading strategies, it will be possible to improve learners’ general reading comprehension levels.

This thesis looks at how Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) be carried out to help society move towards sustainability. It starts by introducing the reader into the essential concepts about Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), TVET, and the barriers to integrating ESD into TVET. It also provides information about the case study conducted in a TVET organization in Ireland which is integrating ESD into TVET. The thesis presents the key aspects that TVET organization need to have in order to successfully support SSD and it also provides a definition of success which is developing a workforce skilled for sustainability where sustainability is defined by the four sustainability principles. After presenting the key aspects, it looks at the strengths and weaknesses, in the lens of the key aspects, of the case study and three other TVET organizations. It later provides with recommendations based on the challenges found integrating ESD into TVET and the presented key aspects in order for TVET organizations to reach the vision of success.

Telma Gomes - phone: 0736280415 - tegomes@uol.com.br Victor Samuel Brizuela - samworks@gmail.com Chen Chen Gu -guchenchen880309@163.com,

Abstract:
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. Consequently, the research makes strategic and operational prescriptions, so as to improve the capability of defence forces that are concerned with preventing or resolving LIC.

Abstract:
Video-based fire detection is a crucial object detection problem that relies on accurate and reliable data to detect fires. However, collecting and labeling fire-related data can be time-consuming and expensive, making it difficult to obtain sufficient data for training machine learning models. To address this challenge, uncertainty-based active learning techniques can be used to iteratively select the most informative samples for labeling. This can reduce the amount of labeled data needed to achieve high model performance and has the potential to even prune the training data with fewer informative samples. The traditional sampling-based uncertainty estimation methods are computationally expensive. Hence, an efficient prior network-based ensemble distillation State-of-the-Art approach is evaluated on an internal dataset which still requires relatively higher overhead computation making it difficult for production deployment. A biased softmax differencing-based uncertainty approach and a feature-based hard data mining approach are proposed and compared with the distillation approach. The novel approaches are found to have a very low overhead uncertainty estimation time compared to the ensemble distillation approach and traditional sampling techniques. The methods are evaluated in the context of curating the unlabeled pool data and improving the training data. For completeness, the experiments are performed on three different data sizes, and overall, the frame-wise selection strategy is proved to be better than the sequence-wise querying strategy. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based hard data mining outperformed other methods and improved the model performance by 16.33% with AUC2% metric when compared with the random selection of data. The approach even outperformed the main network trained on full data by 7.33%, henceforth improving the training data by using informative 26.39% data. The results indicate that novel data mining provides efficient training and pool data curation

Abstract:
VET (Vocational Education and Training) Reforms and Labour Market reforms have started a process aimed at filling the gap between demand and supply of competences. The demand of competences, in fact, is affected by factors requiring the constant adjustment of production and training processes as well as the greater connection between education/training system and enterprises. Digital training, included in National Programmes of ERASMUS+, is essential in order to ensure effective training practices for the current VET system which is undergoing organizational and methodological change. In this context, Digital Teaching in VET System is an innovative approach to support the objectives set out in national and European strategies for applying ICT to VET systems through teachers/trainers training. The use of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality technologies is an important strategy to innovate teaching and improve attention of students during the training session. iDid, application for immersive teaching, represent the deliverable of the project that allows VET teachers and trainers to produce contents of lessons using the potentialities of AR/VR/MR streams, and to share contents in a community oriented approach to transfer know-how and also obtain important user feedbacks.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter describes the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms with the linear-eddy mixing (LEM) based tabulation for modeling of subgrid turbulence-chemistry interaction. The focus will be on the use of artificial neural network (ANN), particularly, supervised deep learning (DL) techniques within the finite-rate kinetics framework. We discuss the accuracy and efficiency aspects of two different strategies, where LEM based tabulation is used in both of them. While in the first approach, referred to as LANN-LES, the subgrid reaction-rate term is obtained efficiently using ANN in the conventional LEMLES framework, in the other approach referred to as TANN-LES, the filtered reaction rate terms are obtained using ANN. First, we assess the implications of the employed network architecture, and the associated hyperparameters, such as the amount of training and test data, epoch, optimizer, learning rate, sample size, etc. Afterward, the effectiveness of the two strategies is examined by comparing with conventional LES and LEMLES approaches by considering canonical premixed and non-premixed configurations. Finally, we describe the key challenges and future outlook of the use of ML based subgrid modelling within the finite-rate kinetics framework.

Abstract:
Training in information technology (IT) tools has traditionally been defined in terms of skills. Consequently, training methods and approaches have focused almost exclusively on ensuring that a trainee acquires the skills required to use an IT tool, and in a specific domain. With the advent and increasing use of enterprise-wide IT architectures, such as client/server, integrated processes such as workflow systems and integrated packages such as SAP, this narrow view of training will prove to be inadequate in preparing the workforce of the future. To train such a workforce, we propose a re-conceptualization of training based on a hierarchy of knowledge levels that a trainee will need. We then use this hierarchy to propose an integrated framework that can be used to develop a comprehensive training strategy. We offer directions for research that are needed to use our model to develop effective training strategies.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the importance and impact of zonal workouts – a level of training with low to moderate intensity, which focuses on increasing cardiovascular endurance and improving aerobic metabolism. Through this research, we seek to understand how this methodology can improve the performance of runners in the long term. Running is a complex sport that requires a proper combination of speed, endurance, strength, and strategy. While it's commonly thought that running faster in workouts will lead to better performance during races, recent studies suggest that integrating training periods into zone1 may be equally or even more beneficial. Using a quantitative and qualitative methodological approach, this study aims to analyze empirical data from professional and amateur runners to provide insights into the benefits of zone1 workouts in improving running performance. The research will also explore the physiological principles behind this training methodology to give a scientific insight into the implications of zone training1. It is hoped that the results of this study will contribute to the understanding of the importance of different types of training in running, encouraging athletes and professionals in the area to consider the inclusion of zonal training1 in their training programs.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors present the results of a project designed for 41 preservice preschool teachers to introduce the concept of living things as an experiential learning strategy in the classroom. The need to approach this concept from a different perspective prompted the design of an education project involving the introduction of insects into classroom as a teaching resource. An informative storyline was used for project launch presentation. The questions they strive to answer in this chapter are related with what concepts of living organisms and what inquiry stages will preservice teachers consider their pupils will carry out during the project. Relevant concepts that are usually not much covered in the preschool curriculum such as the life cycles of animals were considered by 23 participants. Twenty-five of the future teachers claimed that they would be able to work on every inquiry step if they implemented this project in the classroom.

Abstract:
Information security in the health information system has been technology-centric and no strategy has been put forward to meet the demands of the rapid adoption of e-Health in the health industry. The implementation of security requires a good understanding of the stake holders involved and requires the technical aspect of clinical information security, including security requirements, access control and disclosure control. However, since technology-centric security is prone to failure, a stringent strategic approach is quintessential. This chapter discusses the ways to safeguard medical information assets from the strategy point of view. This study shows that most of the existing clinical information security literature and practice has been focused on tactical prevention at a technical level. This understanding of the current status of clinical information security not only suggests the need for a shift from the technical approach to the strategic approach but also raises the necessity for the employment of multiple strategies working in a harmonised way.

Abstract:
<p>In the context of structural health monitoring of infrastructures, the combination of vibration-based systems with artificial intelligence algorithms is becoming particularly appealing. Nonetheless, one of the major challenges lies in effectively managing a large network of bridges and scheduling monitoring activities appropriately. Each bridge typically needs separate training if considering traditional machine learning models, which is often impractical when dealing with numerous structures. Moreover, the lack of labelled data hampers the implementation of supervised learning classifiers. To address these challenges, transfer learning offers the possibility to make inferences on a partially labelled/unlabelled target domain by transferring information from a labelled source domain. In this paper, a methodology based on domain adversarial neural networks is adopted to create a domain-invariant space where the classifier can generalize effectively across a network of bridges. This study examines the transfer between two post-tensioned concrete bridges, the Z24 bridge and the S101 bridge, focusing on the case in which the Z24 bridge serves as the source domain to successfully perform damage classification in the S101 bridge, where only healthy labels are assumed available.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The identification of nonlinear boundary conditions in operational structures is essential. Current physics-based methods only identify nonlinear parameters from known patterns, while data-driven approaches solely focus on load-response relationships at the structural level. To this end, this study introduces a hybrid physics-data-driven strategy for identifying nonlinear boundary conditions. Nonlinear behavior is modeled by multilayer perceptrons (MLPs), while linear structural elements are modeled by the finite element method. These components are assembled to form the global stiffness matrix and restoring force vector. Discrepancies between measured and model-predicted responses are formulated as the loss function, guiding the indirect training of MLPs. Three numerical cases are employed to verify the proposed method in identifying elastic, and hysteretic nonlinear boundary conditions without prior knowledge of the nonlinearity type.</p>

Abstract:
Vortex Ring State (VRS), a hazardous condition during rotorcraft descent, appears more problematic for high disc loadings aircraft like tiltrotors and eVTOL multi-rotors. Traditionally, semi-empirical models were calibrated using flight data to predict VRS. Recent advancements in modeling techniques and computational resources made it possible to predict the VRS by solving Navier-Stokes equations via Eulerian (VTM) or Lagrangian (VPM) approaches and conventional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The study aims to validate the capability of the open-source VPM code DUST to predict VRS boundaries and rotor loads and support the development of appropriate simulation models for the assessment of aircraft handling qualities. Finally, the effect of the rotor dynamics will be introduced to better simulate and design an escaping VRS strategy to enhance the correct training to increase future rotorcraft safety.

Abstract:
Federated learning has been identified as an efficient decentralized training paradigm for scaling the machine learning model training on a large number of devices while guaranteeing the data privacy of the trainers. FedAvg has become a foundational parameter update strategy for federated learning, which has been promising to eliminate the effect of the heterogeneous data across clients and guarantee convergence. However, the synchronization parameter update barriers for each communication round during the training significant time on waiting, slowing down the training procedure. Therefore, recent state-of-the-art solutions propose using semi-asynchronous approaches to mitigate the waiting time cost with guaranteed convergence. Nevertheless, emerging semi-asynchronous approaches are unable to eliminate the waiting time completely. We propose a full asynchronous training paradigm called FedFa, which can guarantee model convergence and eliminate the waiting time completely for federated learning by using a few buffered results on the server for parameter updating. Further, we provide theoretical proof of the convergence rate for our proposed FedFa. Extensive experimental results indicate our approach effectively improves the training performance of federated learning by up to 6x and 4x speedup compared to the state-of-the-art synchronous and semi-asynchronous strategies while retaining high accuracy in both IID and Non-IID scenarios.

Abstract:
Cyberattacks have risen to become one of the most critical global risks. Despite increasing investments to combat cyberattacks, there remains a significant, often unnoticed vulnerability: employees. Previous literature reveals that over two-thirds of cyberattacks within organizations result from employee negligence. While strengthening cybersecurity through employee training is essential, traditional methods often fall short. In this study, we tested different approaches to reduce risk exposure to phishing, one of the most common types of cyberattacks, focusing on a sector and context unaddressed by previous literature: the public sector in a developing country (Argentina). We randomly allocated 1,918 public servants to a control group and two treatment groups to compare the effectiveness of online trainingcommonly used to promote behavior changes on ancillary workplace topics such as ethics, discrimination, and data protectionversus a "learning-by-doing" approach, which involved sending repeated phishing emails followed by educational emails. Our findings indicate that the learning-by-doing approach is superior for enhancing phishing email detection, resulting in fewer phishing emails opened, fewer clicks on phishing links, and improved reporting of suspicious emails. This strategy is particularly effective among permanent public officials compared to contractors, as well as among female employees. These findings not only inform organizational cybersecurity practices but also have broader implications for influencing employee behavior on other important workplace topics.

Abstract:
Online marketplace participation is a strategy for reducing barriers for female entrepreneurs who qualify as persons with disabilities (PWDs). Adapting a framework focused on causal interaction, entrepreneurial action, and the sociocultural context, we analyzed data using a mixed-methods approach from an entrepreneurial training program aimed at PWDs and implemented in three Southeast Asian nations, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, to evaluate whether online marketplace participation helps female PWDs generate better income and support their families. Findings indicate that female PWD entrepreneurs who participate in the online marketplace generate better earnings than those who do not, although heterogeneities by nature of the product/service in question are prevalent. The results also show that trainees are better able to meet their families’ financial needs. Despite the advantages, online marketplace participation among female PWD entrepreneurs is still low due to constraints regarding capital, technical know-how, and suitability of products. Hence, targeted intervention is necessary to enhance their participation.

Deng, Zhuohang, Zhiliang Luo, Neil Hockaday, Ahmed Farid, and Anurag Pande. Evaluation of Left Shoulder as Part-Time Travel Lane Design Alternatives and Transportation Management Center Staff Training Module Development. Mineta Transportation Institute, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2023.2153.

Abstract:
Permanent capacity expansion, such as adding new lanes, is no longer a viable strategy to address traffic congestion in California; hence, ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) strategies, such as part-time use of the shoulder as a travel lane, need to be explored. The use of the shoulder as a travel lane during peak traffic hours has limited applications in the US, and most use the right shoulder as a part-time travel lane even though either the right or left shoulder (but not both) may be used. Caltrans District 5 is exploring the use of Left Shoulder as a Part-time Travel Lane (LSPTTL) as a piece of the larger project, titled Five Cities Multimodal Transportation Network Enhancement Project (FCMTNEP), aimed at congestion relief near Pismo Beach, CA. Construction is expected to begin in Winter 2025 with a Winter 2027 completion date. Given that this would be the first instance of LSPTTL in California, it is a Project of Division Interest (PoDI) for the California division of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the District 5 experience may guide similar future installations of the shoulder as travel lane projects in the state. This research uses a microsimulation-based approach to evaluate design alternatives being explored by Caltrans District 5. This approach allows for evaluating the operational and safety effects of each of the alternatives. Furthermore, a Transportation Management Center (TMC) operator training framework has also been developed to ensure that the local TMC personnel can effectively deploy the LSPTTL during routine operations and emergencies. Based on the operational evaluation, the study found no significant difference in travel times associated with the three design alternatives. Alternative 2, which involves the longest segment with LSPTTL among the alternatives, was found to be the safest based on a surrogate safety measure-based evaluation. This framework for evaluating design alternatives for operations and safety effectiveness may be used for future projects that involve the use of the shoulder as a travel lane. For TMC operator training, this report documents key learning objectives. A hands-on training program that involves operators executing the opening and closing of the shoulder for routine and emergency conditions was developed. As the project nears implementation, there is some scope for improvement in the training modules through replication of the exact features of the LSPTTL design and introducing more realism in the TMC simulator training exercises.
