Continental scale analysis of the savanna biome indicated that fire did not spread at tree canopy cover above 40%. This study investigates this relationship in a field study. It is possible that the type of tree (forest vs. savanna) may influence the amount of shade experienced by the understory and therefore this study also explores differences in LAI between congeneric pairs of forest and savanna tree species. Data were collected in two major South African savanna parks. Plots were set out to measure grass biomass in reference to canopy cover in both Kruger National Park (n=60) and the Hlu

The objective of this study was to develop diameter/basal area increment equations for loblolly pine trees in thinned and unthinned plantations on cutover, site-prepared areas. Results indicated that one set of coefficients was sufficient to estimate individual tree growth (for the three year period following thinning) on lightly thinned and heavily thinned plots. However, unthinned plots required a separate set of coefficients and therefore a separate equation to estimate growth. Diameter growth was adequately explained by some form of the following regressor variables: pine basal area, har

The economical sustainability of citrus orchards has to cope with the availability of water resources. One way to optimise water resources is to employ deficit irrigation (DI) strategies. DI effects on some physiological characters of young orange orchards were analysed. Four irrigation strategies were replicated 4 times: (i) Subsurface drip irrigation, supplying 75% IR (irrigation requirement), (ii) Partial root-zone drying, supplying 50% IR, (iii) Regulated deficit

Abstract:
Abstract:
Land use regulations are typically established as a response to development activity. For effective growth management and habitat preservation, the opposite should occur. This study considers tree preservation ordinances of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area as a means of evaluating development regulation in a metropolitan context. It documents the impact urban cores have on regulations and policies throughout their region, demonstrating that the same urban-rural gradient used to describe physical components of our metropolitan areas also holds true in terms of policy formation.
