It asserts that the image of the aristocracy is heavily marked by and perpetuated by the use of nostalgia. It also explores the idea that the contemporary members of the aristocracy utilize the existence of nostalgia as a way to commodify their past social history for profit.

This thesis aims to consider the competing visions of Sasanian Iran advanced by Arthur Christensen in ‘L'Iran sous les Sassanides' (1944) and Parvaneh Pourshariati in ‘Decline and Fall of the Sasanian Empire' (2008), discuss the relevant evidence in relation to their arguments, and to suggest our own theory of how the Sasanian Empire operated. This thesis focuses on the rebuilding of the Val di Noto towns in south-eastern Sicily after the earthquake of 1693. Academic literature usually presents this architecture in terms of ideal cities and putative baroque harmony. I question the link between geometric urbanism and rationalism by analysing how the rebuilding enabled and maintained the power of certain aristocratic families. I investigate how architecture is implicated in power relations. I argue that rebuilding after the earthquake provided an opportunity for aristocrats to remake their territory through new locations and new forms

Abstract:

This thesis is a contribution to the social history of medieval Devon and the south- west in the lifetimes of the first two Courtenay earls, Hugh II (1275-1340) and Hugh III (1303-77). The fourteenth century was an era of particular importance to the region's social evolution, in which many sectors of the non-agrarian economy - cloth production, mining fishing, ship-building, intermational commerce - attained impressive levels of growth, interrupted perhaps only moderately by the demographic crises of the middle decades.
