This thesis explores how the newly adopted Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), the first internationaltreaty to regulate the trade in conventional arms, can address the issue of the illegal andirresponsible proliferation of small arms and lights weapons (SALW) and improve peace andsecurity. By far the most commonly used weapons in modern conflicts, SALW and theireffects mainly on intrastate conflicts, I argue, are the most important issues for the ATT toaddress. Being one of the prime sources of fuel for, and even cause of, the new trend ofincreasingly deadly and destructive intrastate conflicts today, c

Abstract:
Adequate oxygenation is a critical requirement for normal cellular function in humans. In patients with conditions such as major trauma, sepsis and aspiration injury there is often significant local and widespread tissue hypoxia as a consequence of inadequate oxygen supply or impaired oxygen utilisation. In this thesis, the role of acute hypoxia and hyperoxia were investigated in a novel animal model of acute lung injury. Bronchoscopic instillation of HC1 acid in an anaesthetised, ventilated rabbit resulted in reproducible acute neutrophilic lung injury in the instilled lobe. The contra-latera

Abstract:
Natural Killer cells (NK) are critical components of the innate immune system. Often referred to by their morphology, these large granular lymphocytes (LGLs) are bone marrow-derived lymphocytes and can be found throughout the body. NK cells reside in the liver, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT). Importantly, NK cells also circulate throughout the blood where they function as surveyors of the body and are armed to eliminate malignant, infected, damaged, or foreign cells. NK cells function by a dual receptor system. That is, NK receptors are broadly cate

Abstract:
Mobility, which includes life space and driving behaviors, is an important functional domain for older adults (e.g., Webber, Porter, & Menec, in press). Low mobility is associated with sensory, physical, and cognitive deficits (e.g., Anstey, Wood, Lord, & Walker, 2005). However, few studies have investigated how mobility changes over time. This dissertation contains three longitudinal articles that explored mobility changes, with an emphasis on driving and cognition, among community-dwelling older adults. The first paper investigated patterns of driving self-regulation (i.e., adjustment of dri
