Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Marriage is a socially challenging barrier in the personal lives of people with epilepsy worldwide. However, it is during arranges marriages, which are common in South Asian communities, that epilepsy is most profoundly stigmatizing. We hypothesized that the felt stigma associated with epilepsy during arranged marriages affects women more frequently and intensely. Materials and methods A pilot study in married (n = 38) and unmarried PWE (n = 58) and general public (n = 150) to explore gender-based differences in the stigma associated with epilepsy during arranged marriages. Results Majority unmarried PWE (87%) considered arranged marriage as the best way to realize their matrimonial plans. More unmarried women (72%) apprehended problems in adhering to their epilepsy medications regime after marriage (p 0.009) and 50% apprehended victimization in marriage on account of epilepsy (p 0.001). Moreover, 41% of the married women with epilepsy felt that the disclosure had a negative impact on their married life (p 0.047). Conclusions South Asian WWE experienced more felt stigma than men before and after arranged marriages and this might impact a number of health related psychosocial outcomes. The lack of past experience with epilepsy was associated with a number of misplaced beliefs about and attitudes towards epilepsy.

Abstract:
The meaning and purpose of marriage, and the manner in which spouses are selected, varies across cultures. Although many cultures have a tradition of arranged marriage, researchers interested in marital dynamics generally have focused on love-based marriages. Consequently, there is little information on relational outcomes within arranged marriages. This study compared relationship outcomes in love-based and arranged marriages contracted in the U.S. A community sample of 58 Indian participants living in the U.S. (28 arranged marriages, 30 love-based marriages) completed measures of marital satisfaction, commitment, companionate love, and passionate love. Men reported greater amounts of commitment, passionate love, and companionate love than women. Unexpectedly, no differences were found between participants in arranged and love-based marriages; high ratings of love, satisfaction, and commitment were observed in both marriage types. The overall affective experiences of partners in arranged and love marriages appear to be similar, at least among Indian adults living in contemporary U.S. society.

Abstract:
This article uses familial correspondence to examine how bourgeois families conceived of marriage in the early nineteenth-century France. It argues that the companionate model of marriage, which was gaining influence during these years, did not replace the earlier model of the arranged marriage but rather was integrated into it. Marriages continued to be arranged by families but bourgeois couples also sought love and companionship in marriage. Their sense of “happiness” was a very bourgeois kind of happiness, however, based on economic security and domestic peace within the constraints of familial obligations.

Abstract:
A Catholic marriage is valid if it has complied with applicable laws. One of the legal rules is if the wedding is done based on love and the partner's free will. On the other hand, forced marriage is invalid. Forced marriage has many adverse effects, including it can lead to divorce or separation. This study conducted a study on separated/divorced couples at the Rewung Station of the St. Maria Penolong Abadi Parish in Lawir Diocese of Ruteng. The main focus and objective of the research are to analyze the causes and effects of forced marriages in the area. This study found the factors causing forced marriages, namely: marriage due to arranged marriages by parents, marriage due to arranged marriages in a large family as part of the marriage culture within the clan and already pregnant. The effects of forced marriages are squabbles or disharmony, domestic violence (KDRT), and divorce/separation. This study concludes that forced marriage is not only against the nature of the sacramental union of the Catholic Church but also has a destructive impact on the family and the Church itself. This study recommends that marriage preparation be carried out correctly in the premarital canonical and pastoral investigation process. Likewise, pastoral care for Catholic families also needs serious attention.

Abstract:
This research is based on a South Indian community, the Nagarathar Nattukottai Chettiars, an elite and wealthy merchant community traditionally comprised of businessmen and traders. My research seeks to investigate the acceptance of traditional arranged marriage practices by millennials of the Chettiar community currently residing in Malaysia. Marriage practices are slowly changing in most urban-dwelling communities in India to a more informal, love marriage system but the practices in the Chettiar community, both in India and abroad, are still similar to traditional practices of arranged marriage and have undergone minimal evolution. The Chettiars are a very forward-thinking community and have ventured into many top fields since their rise as a money lending community. Therefore, the practice of arranged marriage amongst the Chettiars is paradoxical as its community members are quite global and modern in thinking. Some of the research objectives include, the current expectations of millennials towards arranged marriage, its evolution, the engagement and opposition of millennials, factors such as family wealth, educational attainment, personality traits, physical appearance, status and social class on the selection of a mate at the time of marriage, the economics of marriage – the dowry system, the influence of social media in arranging a marriage and the competency of the system of arranged marriage as an integral part of the community’s trademark. Arranged marriage amongst the Chettiars is a very complex system and difficult to unpack for a non-Chettiar. I take on the lens of a young Chettiar, like myself, and interview young adults, older community members and parents of marriage age men and women to explore their perspectives on arranged marriage in this increasingly globalized world.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of the international marriage business in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s, and the experiences of female participants from China, South Korea, and the Philippines who married through this system and currently live in Japan. The study treats these women as active female migrants and contributes to a gendered understanding of the process of contemporary migration. The thesis argues for an acknowledgement of the way in which the international marriage business served the purposes of marriage and migration for women in male dominant and economically stratified societies in Asia, without downplaying the fact that the same system and its ideology oppresses women. The study argues that, for these women, participation in international marriage by introduction was about marriage and migration. Analysis of the intricate sites of marriage and migration was thus critical to understanding their experiences. The thesis also argues for recognition of the diverse and complex experiences of the women participants. Part I of this study investigates the macro-economic, social and political factors that influenced development of the international marriage business in Japan. It analyses representations of international introduction marriage and its female participants, and maps the ways in which patriarchal gender ideology in the international marriage business system intersects with global capitalism, and other hegemonic power relations operating in contemporary Japan. Part II examines the marriage and migration experiences of 45 women. The section identifies conflicts faced by the women and examines processes of negotiation inside and outside the family domain. It investigates the extent of the women's agency in their decision to many and live in a foreign country, covering interconnected arenas of marriage, family, paid work, involvement in women's groups and questions of legal citizenship. The women's narratives demonstrate the importance of articulating a structurally embedded analysis with active female agency in the study of international marriage migration.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor essay was to study the phenomenon of forced marriage among women who are living in Sweden with another ethnic and cultural background than Swedes. To investigate different kinds of marriage settings, the honor culture, honor violence and murder in connection to forced marriage. The following question has been formulated: What are the respondent’s experiences and/or interpretation of the phenomenon of forced marriage? Five interviews have been conducted with women who have different interpretations, experiences or knowledge within the phenomenon of forced marriage, such as own experiences, experiences from family members and knowledge from professionals. Radical feministic theory was used for the interpretation of the result. The result shows that the women in the study shared many opinions regarding the consequences, interpretations and experiences connected to the phenomenon such as limited freedom and lack of education and employment opportunities.

Aziz, Rashid. "Taking the strain : second generation British Asian Muslim males and arranged marriage in London." Thesis, City, University of London, 2017. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/17293/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers how second generation British Asian Muslim males negotiate arranged marriage, religion and leisure, and how this negotiation is a means to achieve a culturally prescribed goal. The culturally prescribed goal will be demonstrated to be the attainment of wealth and the maintenance of family bonds. An ethnographic study of thirty second generation British Asian Muslim males was conducted in order to understand how decisions regarding marriage and leisure are made. The modes of negotiation of marriage, leisure and religion are analysed using Merton’s (1938, 1957) Anomie and Strain theory as well as Murphy and Robinson’s (2008) concept of the maximiser. Empirical research is used to describe and analyse how the maximiser achieves the culturally prescribed goal mentioned above. It is argued that the maximiser uses both legitimate and illegitimate means in order to achieve a culturally prescribed goal. The legitimate means in this study are having an arranged marriage and abiding by rules of Islam and the family. It will be argued that through a process of intense socialisation, the means to achieve the culturally prescribed goal are learnt from childhood for some British Asian Muslims. It will be argued that culture is misrepresented as religion in order to facilitate this process of intense socialisation in some British Muslim communities which creates a pressure to conform. The modes of adaptation to this pressure including the conformist, the innovator, the Ritualist, the Retreatist and the Rebel are explored. The focus of the study is on the maximiser as it is argued that the maximiser reproduces a system of transnational consanguineous arranged marriages. The methods of negotiation are analysed using symbolic interactionist perspectives, namely Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (Goffman 1959) and Delinquency and Drift (Matza 1964). This process of negotiating marriage particularly when considering transnational consanguineous marriages, is referred to as the lifelong Business of Marriage. The Business of Marriage is defined as: a system in which transnational consanguineous marriages are taking place under the following conditions: (1) There is a process of intense socialisation where respect for parents and cultural practices are internalised (2) where British nationality is given to the incoming spouse (3) where financial and social support is given to the British husband. This thesis will demonstrate that British Asian Muslim males who fall under the category of the Maximiser are willing to forgo the opportunity of choosing their own spouses in order to inherit the family wealth and to keep bonds between families strong. It is also demonstrated that when a transnational marriage fails within the period required in order for the transnational wife to apply for a British visa, the British husband will stay legally married to his spouse in order to ensure the attainment of a permanent British visa. Finally, this research explores the future generations and argues that the Business of Arranged Marriage will end with the fourth generation of British Asian Muslim males. It is argued that this is the case because at this time, the first generation of south Asian Muslim immigrants into this country will not be present and the wealth of the families would have been passed on to the next generation. This thesis concludes by recommending further research into British Asian Muslim males and marriage, specifically around the areas of forced and arranged marriage.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the fate of the last rebel of royal blood in England, the Duke of Monmouth. Illegitimate children of sovereigns occupied a special place in the system of functioning of the European monarchies of the West at the beginning of the Early Modern period. Their status was high in Spain, France and England. The Stuarts of the second half of the XVII century were distinguished by a large number of bastards. A prominent place in the system of functioning of the Three Kingdoms under Charles II was occupied by his eldest bastard James, Duke of Monmouth. The royal father arranged a profitable marriage for him. He was appointed to the highest court positions, was made the commander of the royal army. Monmouth commanded an expeditionary force in Flanders, defeated the Scottish rebels in the late 1670s. However, the duke considered that he had the right to claim the throne after the death of his father. Charles II had no official descendants and the heir was his younger brother, the catholic James, Duke of York. Monmouth became a voice of opinion and a screen for opposition to Charles II and James II. After the death of his father, in summer of 1685, the Duke of Monmouth rebelled. He gathered a group of supporters and landed in the West of England. He was supported by the Protestants, who fielded militia detachments. At the Battle of Sedgemoor, the royal army defeated the rebels. Monmouth was captured. James II ordered the execution of his rebellious nephew. The rebellion and execution of the duke became an important and vivid plot of propaganda, both royal and oppositional. The article deals with some aspects of this process.
