Abstract:
This research is based on a South Indian community, the Nagarathar Nattukottai Chettiars, an elite and wealthy merchant community traditionally comprised of businessmen and traders. My research seeks to investigate the acceptance of traditional arranged marriage practices by millennials of the Chettiar community currently residing in Malaysia. Marriage practices are slowly changing in most urban-dwelling communities in India to a more informal, love marriage system but the practices in the Chettiar community, both in India and abroad, are still similar to traditional practices of arranged marriage and have undergone minimal evolution. The Chettiars are a very forward-thinking community and have ventured into many top fields since their rise as a money lending community. Therefore, the practice of arranged marriage amongst the Chettiars is paradoxical as its community members are quite global and modern in thinking. Some of the research objectives include, the current expectations of millennials towards arranged marriage, its evolution, the engagement and opposition of millennials, factors such as family wealth, educational attainment, personality traits, physical appearance, status and social class on the selection of a mate at the time of marriage, the economics of marriage – the dowry system, the influence of social media in arranging a marriage and the competency of the system of arranged marriage as an integral part of the community’s trademark. Arranged marriage amongst the Chettiars is a very complex system and difficult to unpack for a non-Chettiar. I take on the lens of a young Chettiar, like myself, and interview young adults, older community members and parents of marriage age men and women to explore their perspectives on arranged marriage in this increasingly globalized world.

Nakamatsu, Tomoko. "Marriage, migration and the international marriage business in Japan." Thesis, Nakamatsu, Tomoko (2002) Marriage, migration and the international marriage business in Japan. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 2002. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/220/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of the international marriage business in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s, and the experiences of female participants from China, South Korea, and the Philippines who married through this system and currently live in Japan. The study treats these women as active female migrants and contributes to a gendered understanding of the process of contemporary migration. The thesis argues for an acknowledgement of the way in which the international marriage business served the purposes of marriage and migration for women in male dominant and economically stratified societies in Asia, without downplaying the fact that the same system and its ideology oppresses women. The study argues that, for these women, participation in international marriage by introduction was about marriage and migration. Analysis of the intricate sites of marriage and migration was thus critical to understanding their experiences. The thesis also argues for recognition of the diverse and complex experiences of the women participants. Part I of this study investigates the macro-economic, social and political factors that influenced development of the international marriage business in Japan. It analyses representations of international introduction marriage and its female participants, and maps the ways in which patriarchal gender ideology in the international marriage business system intersects with global capitalism, and other hegemonic power relations operating in contemporary Japan. Part II examines the marriage and migration experiences of 45 women. The section identifies conflicts faced by the women and examines processes of negotiation inside and outside the family domain. It investigates the extent of the women's agency in their decision to many and live in a foreign country, covering interconnected arenas of marriage, family, paid work, involvement in women's groups and questions of legal citizenship. The women's narratives demonstrate the importance of articulating a structurally embedded analysis with active female agency in the study of international marriage migration.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor essay was to study the phenomenon of forced marriage among women who are living in Sweden with another ethnic and cultural background than Swedes. To investigate different kinds of marriage settings, the honor culture, honor violence and murder in connection to forced marriage. The following question has been formulated: What are the respondent’s experiences and/or interpretation of the phenomenon of forced marriage? Five interviews have been conducted with women who have different interpretations, experiences or knowledge within the phenomenon of forced marriage, such as own experiences, experiences from family members and knowledge from professionals. Radical feministic theory was used for the interpretation of the result. The result shows that the women in the study shared many opinions regarding the consequences, interpretations and experiences connected to the phenomenon such as limited freedom and lack of education and employment opportunities.

Aziz, Rashid. "Taking the strain : second generation British Asian Muslim males and arranged marriage in London." Thesis, City, University of London, 2017. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/17293/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers how second generation British Asian Muslim males negotiate arranged marriage, religion and leisure, and how this negotiation is a means to achieve a culturally prescribed goal. The culturally prescribed goal will be demonstrated to be the attainment of wealth and the maintenance of family bonds. An ethnographic study of thirty second generation British Asian Muslim males was conducted in order to understand how decisions regarding marriage and leisure are made. The modes of negotiation of marriage, leisure and religion are analysed using Merton’s (1938, 1957) Anomie and Strain theory as well as Murphy and Robinson’s (2008) concept of the maximiser. Empirical research is used to describe and analyse how the maximiser achieves the culturally prescribed goal mentioned above. It is argued that the maximiser uses both legitimate and illegitimate means in order to achieve a culturally prescribed goal. The legitimate means in this study are having an arranged marriage and abiding by rules of Islam and the family. It will be argued that through a process of intense socialisation, the means to achieve the culturally prescribed goal are learnt from childhood for some British Asian Muslims. It will be argued that culture is misrepresented as religion in order to facilitate this process of intense socialisation in some British Muslim communities which creates a pressure to conform. The modes of adaptation to this pressure including the conformist, the innovator, the Ritualist, the Retreatist and the Rebel are explored. The focus of the study is on the maximiser as it is argued that the maximiser reproduces a system of transnational consanguineous arranged marriages. The methods of negotiation are analysed using symbolic interactionist perspectives, namely Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (Goffman 1959) and Delinquency and Drift (Matza 1964). This process of negotiating marriage particularly when considering transnational consanguineous marriages, is referred to as the lifelong Business of Marriage. The Business of Marriage is defined as: a system in which transnational consanguineous marriages are taking place under the following conditions: (1) There is a process of intense socialisation where respect for parents and cultural practices are internalised (2) where British nationality is given to the incoming spouse (3) where financial and social support is given to the British husband. This thesis will demonstrate that British Asian Muslim males who fall under the category of the Maximiser are willing to forgo the opportunity of choosing their own spouses in order to inherit the family wealth and to keep bonds between families strong. It is also demonstrated that when a transnational marriage fails within the period required in order for the transnational wife to apply for a British visa, the British husband will stay legally married to his spouse in order to ensure the attainment of a permanent British visa. Finally, this research explores the future generations and argues that the Business of Arranged Marriage will end with the fourth generation of British Asian Muslim males. It is argued that this is the case because at this time, the first generation of south Asian Muslim immigrants into this country will not be present and the wealth of the families would have been passed on to the next generation. This thesis concludes by recommending further research into British Asian Muslim males and marriage, specifically around the areas of forced and arranged marriage.

Hay, William. "South Asian divorce and disputes involving children of South Asian origin." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2198.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with two discrete but related themes that are of considerable socio-legal significance: South Asian divorce and disputes involving South Asian children. Both themes are explored empirically by means of a qualitative research study conducted in an urban and industrial area of Britain with a high South Asian population. The thesis thus seeks to provide much needed information concerning what are currently two poorly understood social problems. The material is presented in three main sections. The first section provides the wider context to the study including a discussion of the changing face of South Asian social relations and the norms and traditions by which they are governed, together with a description of the values, principles and practices of those charged with the responsibility of dealing with disputes over the arrangements for children. The second section focuses upon the approach taken to the research and presents the empirical findings of the study. This section uses as its basis a series of semi-structured interviews that allow different perspectives on the twin themes to be compared and contrasted. The third and final section draws together the key conclusions of the study and offers an analytical and normative framework with which to understand the material generated. The thesis places a high premium on the historical, institutional and normative dimensions of each of the themes and uses a combination of sociological and legal insights to provide a rounded picture of the nature and range of the problems studied. In so doing, it generates a range of questions that are of crucial relevance for members of South Asian communities and those engaged in research and teaching in the area of race and ethnicity. In addition, the thesis has some important conceptual, moral and practical implications for those practitioners who are involved in the dispute resolution process.

Abstract:

The study’s purpose was to gain comprehension and knowledge about immigrate women’s vision on benefits respective disadvantages with arranged marriages.

The study’s question at issues was:

(1) How do the women consider that the ideal marriage is suppose to be?

(2) How do the women experience that their vision on marriage has changed in a new culture?

(3) How do the women consider that parents reasons, around the choice of a partner at arranged marriages?

To be able to answer these questions at issues we used a qualitative method where interviews carried out with four immigrated women from four different countries where Islam is widespread religion. Common for these women is that they all are Muslims and that they come from countries where arranged marriages are practiced. They also have concrete experience of arranged marriages, either through themselves or someone they know.

Material from interviews was analysed with a help of patriarchal theory and social constructivism. We have also analysed the material with a theory about culture and a theory about groups. The results of the study showed that the women are mostly positive into arranged marriages. They argue their standpoint with that marriage is an eternal institution that is built on respect and common values. The women see disadvantages in marriages that are built on love because it often leads to divorces when the love is gone.

Gundogdu, Akturk Elcin. "Attachment Figure Transference, Caregiving Styles And Marital Satisfaction In Arranged And Love Marriages." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612205/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The study aims to investigate the effects of married women&rsquo
s attachment security, caregiving styles, how they initiated marriage (i.e., love vs. arranged) and whether they have egalitarian or traditional marriage on their marital satisfaction and attachment figure transference to their husband. It is expected that attachment to spouse would be stronger and attachment functions would be transferred earlier in love marriages than arranged marriages. Moreover, caregiving styles, attachment security, and egalitarian structure of marriage are expected to predict transference of attachment functions to husbands and marital satisfaction. Married women (N = 204) filled out a questionnaire package including the measures of division of labor in house chores, significant people in their life, attachment anxiety and avoidance, caregiving styles, and marital satisfaction. A series of ANCOVA controlling for the duration of marriage was conducted to compare the participants with arranged and love marriages. Separate hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to predict attachment strength and satisfaction separately for love and arranged marriages. Results revealed no significant difference between arranged and love marriages on the strength and timing of attachment figure transference to spouse. In both types of marriage, sensitive and responsive caregiving styles and low attachment avoidance were associated with stronger attachment to spouse. Although those with egalitarian relationships reported higher levels of marital satisfaction in both love and arranged marriages, women with both egalitarian and love marriages reported the highest levels of marital satisfaction than those with traditional and love marriage. The findings were discussed considering cultural context and previous work.

Roy, Reshmi. ""Saptapadi" -- the seven steps : a study of the urban Hindu arranged marriage in selected Indian-English fiction by women authors." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4690.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the influence of the Indian socio-cultural hegemonic discourse on the urban Hindu arranged marriage. For this purpose, four novels in English by Indian women writers have been selected for their location within the specific urban Indian socio-cultural tradition. These novels are the avenues through which the Gramscian theories of hegemony and consensual control are observed. The study focuses on unravelling the damage caused by the hegemonic socio-cultural traditions within the marriages portrayed in the fiction. The interplay between the reader and the texts is vital in further exploring the reach of hegemony into the reading codes of the audience. The need for a model reader is discussed within the study which also addresses the roles of both protagonists and readers as 'cultural insiders/outsiders.' The study focuses on the emotional and socio-cultural dilemmas faced by the protagonists and the audience who occupy the 'in-between-zones' of those who fall into neither category of absolute insiders or outsiders in cultural terms. This thesis is not an attempt aggressively to deconstruct the Indian traditional social structure. The main aim of this thesis is to use the literary discourse as an instrument to explore the subversion of the ancient Hindu discourses whenever it has suited the vested interests shaping the hegemonic socio-cultural discourses. This study also attempts to further an understanding of the exploitative manipulation of married couples by various interest groups. In the process, using fiction as an instrument, there might be a chance to create stronger marriages and more harmonious marital interactions within urban Indian society.

Bellitou, Touria. ""Le papier en or" : stratégies matrimoniales en milieu migratoire marocain." Thesis, Bordeaux 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013BOR22039.

Full text
Abstract:
For twenty years, with the succession of generations, the issue of marriage migration situations has gradually risen in families of Moroccan migrants in the valley of the Garonne. Through the life stories and interviews collected from people involved, and the sociographic work, this is to identify matrimonial strategies implemented by these families. These strategies intersect migration logical contenders for immigration, generating the appearance of a new form of marriage, "marriage-paper." The request, conducted among migrant parents, their children, and among contenders for marriages in Morocco and in France, highlights the social and cultural constraints faced by the migrant family that has the "duty to assist their relatives", and the immigration applicants who undergo "closed" borders. This thesis demonstrates that the marriage of the children of immigrants, and their migration situation reveals intergenerational conflict, the instrumentalization of Islam and standards of conjugal. Additionally, it shows the subjugation of the migrant families of a village favored by the desire for cultural continuity and reproduction of inbreeding "socio-ethnic." Despite recurring difficulties, the "marriage-paper" appears as a "solution" to families subject to these complex constraints. As a result, affects their possibilities for action, but also marriage practices they seek to include in their migration logic

Basso, Ann McCauley. "Bel-Imperia: The (Early) Modern Woman in Thomas Kyd’s Spanish Tragedy." Scholar Commons, 2006. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3776.

Full text
Abstract:
At the heart of Thomas Kyd's revenge tragedy The Spanish Tragedy lies an arranged marriage around which all of the other action revolves. Bel-Imperia of Spain has been betrothed against her will to Prince Balthazar of Portugal, but she is no ordinary woman, and she has plans of her own. Bel-Imperia's unwillingness to participate in the arranged marriage is indicative of the rise of the companionate marriage; it represents a rejection of the arranged marriage that dominated upper class society in earlier years. This study seeks to throw light upon early modern attitudes towards marriage, focusing particularly on the arranged marriage, the companionate marriage, and the state marriage. Additionally, it examines the role of woman as peace-weaver, a practice that dates back as far as the Beowulf manuscript. Using historical as well as literary sources to delineate these forms, I apply this information to a study of the play itself, with an emphasis on its performative value. Since the proposed marriage dictates all of the action of the play, an analysis of the bartered bride, Bel-Imperia, is of particular importance. This essay examines her character in depth as well as her relationships with Andrea and Horatio, who love her; with Lorenzo, the King, and her father, who seek to exploit her; and with Hieronimo, who becomes her partner in revenge. Additionally, I contrast her with Isabella, one of only two other female characters in the play and conclude by delineating how my analysis would affect a performance of the play and by "directing" a hypothetical interpretation of The Spanish Tragedy.

Gundogdu, Aylin. "Relationship Between Self-construals And Marital Quality." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12609077/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis can be discussed under four main titles. First of all, effects of four different self types (separated-patterned, separated-individuated, related-patterned, and related- individuated), originating from differentiative and integrative needs of individuals based on the Balanced Integration and Differentiation model, on perceived decision making quality, dyadic adjustment and marital satisfaction were examined. Secondly, the effects of three types of marriage named as &ldquo
arranged marriage&rdquo
, &ldquo
family- and self-selected marriage&rdquo
and &ldquo
self-selected marriage&rdquo
were investigated regarding perceived decision making quality, dyadic adjustment and marital satisfaction. Thirdly, the interaction effects of aforementioned variables were examined. At last, variables predicting marital quality were analyzed through structural equation modeling technique. Two hundred ninety two married couples with a prerequisite of being married at least for one year participated in the present study with a selection by snowball technique from the cities of Istanbul, Ankara, Mersin, Denizli and Ordu. According to the results, it was concluded that the self types had significant main effects on each variable. Also, it was found that marriage types had significant interaction effects with self-types on dyadic adjustment and marital satisfaction as well
besides it was also revealed from the analyses that marriage type had no main effect on marital satisfaction. Finally, relatedness and individuation were found to be predictor variables of marital quality directly and/or through mediation of perceived decision making quality.

Sharp-Jeffs, Nicola. "A lot going on : the links between going missing, forced marriage and child sexual exploitation." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/622097.

Full text
Abstract:
An extensive review of research and policy literature revealed that links are made between: going missing and forced marriage; going missing and child sexual exploitation; and forced marriage and child sexual exploitation. However, despite these overlaps, no links are made between all three issues. Given that some South Asian young women will run away from home in order to avoid being forced into marriage and that young people who run away or go missing from home are at risk of, or abused, through child sexual exploitation a research proposition was developed on the basis that a three way link was theoretically possible. A case study methodology was developed to test the research proposition. Eight cases were identified in which South Asian young people (under 18 years of age) had experienced some combination of all three issues. However, the pattern identified within the research proposition was not the ‘final explanation’. Analysis of the research findings revealed that variation existed within the pattern proposed. Moreover, a second pattern was identified in which forced marriage emerged as a parental response to young people who were already being sexually exploited and going missing in this context. The patterns identified were confirmed through analysis of interviews undertaken with twelve subject experts (key informants) and resonated with a specifically selected group of nine young people who were presented with a composite case study during focus group discussion. I argue that awareness of patterns linking all three issues will help practitioners to identify and respond appropriately to cases where the issues of going missing, forced marriage and child sexual exploitation overlap. That said the complexity of the cases highlighted risks associated with overlooking diversities: social divisions related to age, gender, ethnicity, class, sexuality and disability were explored to see how they shaped the young people’s experiences. This process revealed that they were located within complex axes of power which then intersected with social systems, including family, community and public institutions. As a consequence, young people lacked relational support and had limited access to safe accommodation and economic resources. This resulted in some young people making attempts to try and self-manage the competing harms that they were facing. The practitioners who supported the young people highlighted the challenges involved in working with them. Analysis of practitioners’ accounts further revealed how power dynamics within multi-agency working arrangements also impacted their efforts to respond to the needs of young people. Through testing the research proposition, I addressed a recognised need for more focused research into the issue of going missing as it relates to young people from different ethnic backgrounds (Berelowitz et al. 2012; Berelowitz et al., 2013; OCC, 2012; Patel, 1994; Safe on the Streets Research Team, 1999; Stein et al. 1994) as well as furthering knowledge about how child sexual exploitation is experienced by young people from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities (Chase & Statham, 2004; CEOP, 2011b; Jago et al., 2011; Berelowitz et al., 2013; Thiara & Gill, 2010; Kelly, 2013; Ward & Patel, 2006). The development of a typology of patterns linking going missing, forced marriage and child sexual exploitation provides a unique contribution to the scholarly literature.

Abstract:
This is a study about Hindu women's experiences of arranged marriages. The study is based on previous research on women’s experiences. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the underlying factors that contribute to Hindu women experiencing that their mental health is affected by arranged marriages. The purpose was also to investigate how the women felt that the new legislation regulating of the dowry system has affected them regarding their relationship with the new family. The main purpose was to identify themes in women's experiences of arranged marriages and investigate connections between these themes.   The result showed that women who live in arranged marriages are more frequently exposed to both physical and mental violence, and as a result outcome they often suffer from different kinds of mental illness. The papers result also showed that these women’s opinions about arranged marriages differ slightly depending on their life situation. For instance, whether they live in a city or on the countryside, or how conscious they are about people who have other opinions and perceptions than their own. This study also shows the importance of these women having a job outside their home, as it offers contact with people beyond their family, enables the women contribute financially to the family and in other ways affects the women’s situation positively.

Abstract:
ZULEIKHA, who was trained as a pianist in her hometown of Lahore, Pakistan, arrives in Irving, Texas after her arranged marriage to ISKANDER, but finds it difficult to get accustomed to the appurtenances, encumbrances, and perquisites of the middle-class housewife lifestyle. Despite giving birth to a son, WASIM, she quickly falls out of love with her dutiful but straight-laced husband. She begins giving private lessons, and commences an affair with PATRICK, a transplanted Canadian who is trapped in his own loveless marriage. When she gets pregnant, Zuleikha is convinced the child belongs to her husband. She ends her affair with Patrick, but Iskander finds out about it anyway. The ensuing confrontation between Zuleikha and Iskander turns into a physical altercation, during which Zuleikha, having fallen to the floor, is unable to see if Iskander stomps on her belly, or falls on her by accident as he will later claim. The trauma results in a miscarriage. The unusual set of circumstances surrounding this violent episode serves as the backdrop for the rest of the story, by catapulting this otherwise nondescript couple into the glare of the public eye. Iskander is arrested and charged with feticide, and he faces a long prison sentence under Texas law. A court order prohibits him from contacting Zuleikha and Wasim, who are taken to a shelter for Muslim women and children. There, the other domestic abuse victims view Zuleikha as someone who "had it coming" because of her infidelity, and are therefore openly hostile to her. The shelter's director, a woman named REZA, is beholden to wealthy Muslim donors, and therefore arranges for Zuleikha to meet with members of a highly controversial Islamic tribunal. Zuleikha is pressured to forgive her husband and testify in his favor, so as not draw further negative attention to the Muslim community. JANE, the District Attorney, on the other hand, initially plays nice with Zuleikha and informs her that she will devote any and all available resources in the prosecution of Iskander. When Zuleikha can't get her story straight and hesitates about testifying against her husband, however, Jane, too, turns against her. Zuleikha discovers that the DA has been caught hiding her own secrets and now faces a public confidence crisis of her own. Zuleikha comes to realize that Jane's reasons for being so gung-ho about winning Iskander's conviction have as much to do with re-endearing herself to her electorate as with justice. Zuleikha thus finds herself at the epicenter of a political firestorm fueled by winds of anti-Muslim hysteria, with different people trying to use her situation to their own advantage. When Wasim gets in a scuffle at the shelter and has to be taken to a clinic, she panics and contacts Iskander against her better judgment. Husband and wife finally confront each other while Wasim is being treated. Iskander claims to still love Zuleikha and begs her to take him back so that they and their son can resume their prior family life. But Zuleikha realizes that even if Iskander is sincere and not merely seeking reconciliation in order to avoid a harsh prison sentence, she will never be able to forgive him, let alone love him and live with him again. She comes to accept the fact that she has no control over Iskander's fate in court, and can only move forward by testifying truthfully and trying to do what is best for her and her son. While waiting for the trial to begin, she gains admission in a summer training program for piano instructors and begins the next phase of her life.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In order to sell products in the defense industry it is often demanded of the seller to reinvest capital and collaborate with companies in the buying country, with the buyer hoping to establish a defense industry of their own. These so called offset demands are seen as an industry standard and forces the sellers to open up their supply chain and educate and develop the industry in the buying country. This “forced” knowledge transfer is an interesting topic and have been the focus point of this thesis. How can firms conduct successful knowledge transfer and develop the foreign industry and at the same time protects its own products and competitive advantage? This qualitative study has been done through interviews with four people having senior positions and a vast knowledge and background in working with offsets, combined with secondary data from previous studies and articles. The study showed that the most important factor for a successful knowledge transfer is the absorptive capacity of the partner and buying country. Furthermore, the success also lies in the offset regulations of the buyer, if you ask for the wrong things or in the wrong way, the industrial effects will be very limited. The Swedish firms were not afraid of sharing their knowledge since they had the confidence that they would keep to stay ahead of any new upcoming competitor, therefore a minor factor to consider. Lastly offsets have often been portrayed negatively. However, if successfully conducted, several positive effects of offsets have been identified by the authors. Showing that even though partnerships may an “arranged marriage” it can still become successful.

Patel, Divya. "An exploration into women's choice and premarital experiences of arranged marriages within a South Asian community in Britain : an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis." Thesis, University of East London, 2017. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/7388/.

Full text
Abstract:
Arranged marriages are a common traditional practice within the South Asian community in Britain (Hemmings & Khalifa, 2013). There is ambiguity surrounding arranged marriage practices as the Home Office (2000) found practices vary from greatly coercive to completely consensual (Hemmings et al., 2013; Marcus, Begum, Alsabahi & Curtis, 2017). This is problematic as there is a lack of research which focuses on the psychological implications of arranged marriages, considering there is a varying degree of consent and pressure experienced. Therefore, this study explored the meaning of South Asian women’s lived premarital experiences of their arranged marriages, with particular attention to their experience of choice. Seven South Asian women in Britain were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, which captured the complexities and inter-subjective experiences within their cultural context (Smith, 1996). Four themes were identified: cultural and religious belief systems as influencers, the ripple of pressure, decision-making: negotiation of agency and choice, and self and identity. The themes highlight that women are confined within religious and cultural boundaries that guide their decisions. For South Asian women, permission is fundamental and being given a choice, is perceived as an indirect permission for women to exercise agency, to express their own needs and pursue behaviours in line with their identity. For these women, there were varying degrees of choice given to them at each stage of the process. Importantly, the experience of choice was meaningful for women, as this gave an opportunity for self expression and others caring about their wellbeing. Also, women experienced subtle pressure from their parents and the community, to ensure they uphold cultural duties. The premarital distress often led some women to subjugate their needs, and to accept and conform to alleviate psychological and emotional distress. Although some women exercised personal agency and pushed gender boundaries, many felt objectified due to the lack of involvement within the process, which challenged their sense of identity. This research informs clinical practice which is to provide South Asian women a safe therapeutic space to understand their own needs, tensions and feelings which may help women to feel connected to their experiences. Fundamentally, women voiced their need for more rights and involvement within the arrangement process, as their family’s needs were often prioritised. This research also proposes more community work for individuals to be aware of their basic human rights and to understand the subjective element of individual’s experiences in arranged marriages. Limitations and future areas for research are explored and discussed.

Mailler, Emma Cornelia. "For love or money : perceptions and conceptions of the work ethic held by a group of preservice teachers in Queensland." Queensland University of Technology, 2006. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16221/.

Full text
Abstract:
The work ethic has been a popular topic for public comment and for research in the social sciences. The work ethic is usually understood to embody the values, beliefs and principles an individual has in relation to work. Work is an important dimension of human experience. Governments and employers are particularly interested in increasing productivity and competitiveness in connection with work and the work ethic is perceived as an important catalyst in achieving these goals. The main point of reference for discussion about the work ethic in the past century has been Max Weber's Protestant ethic thesis. Weber's thesis has attracted much criticism over the years and contemporary writers have suggested that alternative conceptions of the work ethic do exist. Despite widespread agreement that this is the case, consensus has not yet been reached on how such conceptions should be defined or how they may manifest in an individual. The majority of research on the work ethic has been limited to the collection of quantitative data using one of several survey instruments that are available. Fewer studies have collected data on the work ethic using a qualitative approach and yet, this is exactly what is required to achieve progress in identifying the range of conceptions that may exist. This study occurs in the context of teacher education and the work ethic has relevance to teachers and teacher educators for several reasons. Teachers, through the explicit and hidden curriculum they provide, have some responsibility for inculcating a work ethic in their students. It follows that it is important to understand the work ethic of teachers on this basis alone. A most logical starting place for accomplishing this task is during their career preparation. This study advocates explicit examination of preservice teachers' conceptions of the work ethic and exploration of how this might affect their career and curriculum decision making processes. This research is primarily intended to inform teacher educators who wish to pay attention to these things in their programs, along with researchers from other disciplines who are interested in the work ethic. Inspired by a pragmatic philosophy, this study utilised a mixed method research design to investigate the conceptions of the work ethic held by a group of preservice teachers studying in Brisbane, the capital city of the state of Queensland, Australia. Priority was given to the first phase of the research, which was to identify the qualitative conceptions of the work ethic held by the preservice teachers. The second quantitative phase was intended to complement and expand those findings by demonstrating that an established instrument in the measurement of work ethic could be used to profile conceptions of the work ethic held by an individual. The first phase of the research adopted a phenomenographic approach to identify nine conceptions of the work ethic held by a group of 22 preservice teachers. A courtship metaphor was used to characterise each of the nine conceptions which were labelled as Honeymoon, Monogamist, Serial Monogamist, Arranged Marriage, Celibate, Obsession, One-night Stand, Hedonist and Polyamorist. The second phase of the research used quantitative techniques involving factor analysis and linear modelling to link anonymous responses from 411 preservice teachers to the Occupational Work Ethic Inventory (OWEI) with the nine conceptions identified in the first phase of the research. It was found that the OWEI could be used to profile an individual's orientation to the work ethic conceptions that were defined. This research responded to calls in the literature for a better understanding of the characteristics of the people who choose to become teachers. It also suggested ways in which teacher education could be improved to prepare preservice teachers better through socialisation practices and the university curriculum. This study confirms that there are qualitatively different conceptions of the work ethic that may provide an alternative to the traditional Weberian conception. A technique is proposed to associate OWEI responses with the model of nine work ethic conceptions. Suggestions are also made with respect to potential improvement of the OWEI.

While blind dating has been widespread throughout history and across countries, this article explores the influence of the mate selection patterns on family resources. Based on the data of Panel Study of Family Dynamics (PSFD) from 1999 to 2014, we focus on the information of 3551 families, including 499 blind date couples and 1232 arranged marriage couples. Furthermore, we also employ the two-stage least square method (2SLS) to deal with the endogenous problem caused by the mate selection patterns and family resources. Our results show that couples married by blind dating have lower family income. Couples who are engaged in arranged marriages have higher family income. Couples in the village have lower family income whether by blind date or by arrangement. Couples married by blind dating have lower hours of housework per week, and couples married by arrangement have higher hours of housework per week. Therefore, couples who married by arrangement spend more time on the family. As a result, the couples show that they are more satisfied with their marriage. Another result will be that the number of children in blind date couples is relatively high. Here we expect that since families expect their children to carry on their names, the husbands’ parents from blind date couples have expectations that their daughters in law can product more children, resulting in the fact that they bear more children. Finally, wives who are marriage on blind dates have a lower income when getting married, and wives who are married by arrangement have higher income when she got married. Wives in different cognitive environments have different income abilities in the labor market. Women with higher education tend to have their own thinking and have better job opportunities and social opportunities to find their partners.

Abstract:
Forced marriage is generally viewed as a clash between culture and gender and the fact that men are also victims, in a small number of cases, escapes attention of policy makers and activists. While the overall approach to forced marriage has helped men as well they, however, have remained below the radar of public concern. A problem particular to men is their unwillingness to articulate in public forums their predicament as questions of masculinity are then raised. Ultimately men will have to break the silence, organize and mobilize collectively if they wish to see specific policies that target men.

Semple, Sean Alexander John. "Arranged marriages, broken families and concerned parents : a "bounded choice" perspective on commitment in Grace Gospel Church." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/10802.

Full text
Abstract:
Grace Gospel Church (GGC) is a small congregation that has met in various venues in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal since 2003. It is a partner church of the Mauritian-based organisation, Church Team Ministries International (CTMI), led by Miki Hardy. Hardy is a pastor who claims to have received a unique revelation from God, and he is considered to be an apostle by his followers. Grace Gospel Church and Church Team Ministries International have gained international attention due to claims that they exert a controversial influence over their members. This influence appears to induce a radical commitment to the partner church and CTMI, leading to behavioural, career and study changes, arranged marriages and estrangement between members and their families. Grace Gospel Church has been accused of being a cult, and this exploratory research questions whether this accusation has justification by comparing the group’s theology and practices against theological, psychological and sociological research on cults. Cult researcher Janja Lalich’s theory of “bounded choice” is described and used to evaluate the commitment witnessed in GGC. Bounded choice exists when, as a result of psycho-social group dynamics, a personal fusion occurs between the individual and the ideology and mores of the group. Out of this fusion, a charismatically committed “true believer” emerges who may appear to have personal freedom, but whose palette of choices is severely curtailed by the beliefs and practices of the group. “Bounded” decision making results which might appear irrational or repugnant to those outside the group, but to true believers represent their highest aspirations. This research indicates that GGC shares many characteristic features of typical cults and also promotes the conditions necessary for bounded choice to occur. It is thus concluded that GGC could legitimately be termed a cult, and that bounded choice is a valid explanation for the controversial choices made by its members.

Abstract:
This research A Descriptive Visual Analysis of the Survival of Tamil Arranged Marriage Rituals and the Impact of Commercialism is a critical analysis of ritual performances as a key component of Tamil wedding ceremonies. These rituals are performed before, during, and after the wedding and are interrogated throughout in this dissertation. This research explored and attempted to identify the significance of ritual performances in Tamil people’s marriages of southern India. Through the documentation and unpacking of traditional Hindu wedding celebrations, this study examined how these ancient rituals have been influenced by the modern world. It explored how cultural beliefs are negatively impacted through the commercialisation of wedding ceremonies and how they justify the maintenance of ritual practice. Symbolic activities and ritual performances are studied and discussed throughout this study by observing various Tamil wedding ceremonies and conclusions are drawn through conversations with couples and parents who have participated in such events. The dissertation further explores the ways in which these rituals are ultimately reflected and represented in artistic practice, inspired by the works of various artists who engage with their mediums in a ritualistic manner.

Rashid, Kazi S. "Perceptions of transnational arranged marriages among the children of Bangladeshi skilled migrants in Sydney." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:55318.

Full text
Abstract:
Transnational arranged marriages among Muslim temporary labour migrants’ children have been problematised in policy, media and public discourses in European migrant-receiving societies. Such problematisation has been driven by concerns regarding forced marriages, sham marriages and continuous migration that arguably hinder integration into host societies. As such, transnational arranged marriages have been essentialised as a marker of ‘Monolithic Muslim Otherness’. While Australia is a classic migration-receiving country (Castles, Vasta & Ozkul 2014, p. 128) and Islamophobic sentiment is on the rise (Blair, Dunn, Kamp & Alam 2017), marriage practices among children of Muslim background in Australia are underrepresented in the literature. This thesis aims to address this gap by exploring the perceptions and attitudes of young adult children of Bangladeshi skilled migrants towards transnational arranged marriages. More specifically, it examines the ways in which young adult Bangladeshi-Australians challenge Western discourses of Muslim practices, particularly in regard to gender roles, agency and homogeneity. Employing semi-structured interviews with seven young adult Bangladeshi-Australians, this thesis provides a rich understanding of the complexity, diversity and dynamism of the spousal selection process. Through a postcolonial and post-structuralist analysis of interview data, I illustrate that not only are young adult Muslim Bangladeshi-Australians heterogeneous in terms of their gender, education, age and religiosity, but their perceptions and attitudes towards transnational arranged marriages are similarly diverse. I argue that spousal selection preferences are intertwined with interactions and negotiations between individual preferences, agency and meso-level structures such as family networks, the Bangladeshi migrant community and peer groups, as well as contextual factors, such as the Australian marriage market and immigration and integration policies. This study is an important contribution to the body of research regarding transnational arranged marriages among Muslim migrants, as it moves beyond the marriage behaviour of descendants of temporary labour migrants in Europe. It also makes important contributions to broader research on migration, settlement, national identity and belonging in its driving argument that the questioning of migrant children’s integration based on their marriage behaviour is narrow and exclusionary.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study took place in the Greater Lisbon area, Portugal and used micro-ethnographic methods, to understand the practice of transnational arranged marriages among the Hindu-Gujarati diaspora. Eight married women between the ages of 32 to 52 years were interviewed to understand the experiences and perceptions of women who participate in such marriages. Furthermore, lives of married women within the diaspora were also analyzed using an intersectional structural approach, to comprehend their position within the larger power structures such as caste and gender. Additionally, strengths-based and agency favoring approaches along with migration theories on transnationalism were used to analyze how married women actively negotiated with their environments and countered challenges faced by them while living in Portugal. The study established that arranged marriages between transnational communities served the collectivist purpose of ensuring continuity and reproduction of their culture in while abroad. Traditional marriages among diasporas also entailed that certain power hierarchies from countries of origin sustained in the new geographic context. Although married women from the diaspora were disadvantaged in relation to their male counterparts when it came to certain aspects, they were never ‘passive’ beings within the migration process or while living abroad. Women not only challenged oppressive structures or practices but also occassionally occupied high positions in certain power structures (such as caste) and actively sought to ensure their maintenance in Portugal. The research value of this thesis lies in the fact that this is the first attempt to studying how arranged marriages take place within a transnational context in Portugal. Studying women within diasporas through the lens of strengths-based and agency-favoring approaches is also relatively new approach in social research. Lastly, the study concludes with making suggestions for social work practitioners and researchers who would want to study this group.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate cultural conflicts in Northern Sotho dramas. At the beginning of the work, reasons for the choice of the topic are given, and thereafter, the methodology to be adopted in analysing the plays is outlined. Various factors considered to be contributory to the acculturation of traditional Africans are discussed. Throughout this study, traditionalists oppose westernised Africans because of strange norms and practices they have adopted. The two parties disagree on issues like arranged marriage, remarriage and leadership. Christianity features prominently as the basic cause of conflict. Modernists oppose traditional practices on the ground that they are not in conformity with Christian principles. The plays are compared to determine how each playwright has attempted to resolve conflicts in his respective play. The study ends with a comment on findings where traditionalism, being a common enemy in the three plays, is overridden by modernity.

Abstract:
If You Are the One.
The reality dating programs have constituted an important segment of entertainment industry over several decades around the world. In China, the tradition of arranged marriages has a history of more than one thousand years. In the 1980s, the first Chinese dating program was aired on television, and since then, programs of this genre have gained increasing attention from the Chinese audience, both for their entertainment nature and for the importance of marriage in Chinese culture. One of the most representative programs of this genre in China is If You Are the One, aired on Jiangsu TV. Shortly after its debut, this program has become one of China's most popular TV shows, as marital values and other topics discussed in the program have generated major debates in Chinese society. This dissertation aims to present the most popular debates related to the program, such as the marital values of the Chinese people from various social classes and the commercialization of romantic relationships in the 21st century. The empirical analysis made in this paper on the above questions indicate that there are differences between the criteria of ideal spouses among migrant workers, the middle class, social elites and also between continental Chinese and overseas Chinese. Besides, there is also a big difference between the two genders, since single women in the marital market have, in general, more advantages and choices than single men. As for the commercialization of romantic relationships, this dissertation argues that this is not only a phenomenon that emerged after the ‘Reform and Opening-up’ policy by the end of 1970s, but that there is also a strong tradition of commercializing marriages and demonstrating the seriousness of romantic relationships with valuable goods since ancient and imperial China. However, the market economy has also created new ways of commercializing romantic relationships in the 21st century China.

Abstract:
Due to migration, two different marriage systems came to co-exist in Germany: love marriages and arranged marriages, with the latter triggering a heated debate in the German society. This study investigated the moral underpinnings of negative attitudes towards groups that engage in arranged marriages amongst adult Germans (N =327). Based on the Moral Foundations Theory, the individualizing and libertarian moral foundation were hypothesized to predict negative attitudes towards people who engage in arranged marriages, with the attitudes towards arranged marriages mediating this relationship. Intercultural competences were expected to buffer the relationship between moral foundations and attitudes towards arranged marriages. Unexpectedly, the results showed that individualizing and libertarian moral foundations predict more positive attitudes towards the groups that engage in arranged marriages (i.e., less social distance and less dehumanization). By contrast, the binding foundation predicted more social distance and more dehumanization of groups that engage in arranged marriages. The mediating role of attitudes towards arranged marriages was not supported. Intercultural competences were not significant moderators. The results and their implications are discussed.
