Abstract:
A renewed merging of art and design accompanied by the inflation of design in relation to art has been increasingly noted by writers since the 1990s. Some critics and artists such as Dan Graham have celebrated this phenomenon as a critical opportunity; others such as art historian and critic Hal Foster have criticized the trend as a catastrophic loss of the limits required for liberal subjectivity. In the first chapter, I consider Graham's position as outlined in "Art as Design/Design as Art" (1986) and contrast it with Hal Foster's argument as presented in "Design and Crime" (2002).While the

The literature on gallery education emphasizes docent "management", or the methods used to recruit, train, and supervise docents. Although no one has ever escaped death, humans have succeeded in extending longevity due to continuous efforts. Due to the definite termination of death to the physical body, humans have faced death with both strong and complicated emotions; on the one hand wishing for longevity, while on the other hand, approaching death with fear and contradiction. Abstract:
This thesis explores the possibility that a well designed and situated urban art gallery might improve a problematic urban condition in Vancouver. The aim is to vitalize a neglected urban space, and connect the waterfront seawall with the downtown core, while exposing the gallery to the public. By playing on the potential of a formally rich urban context— characterized by viaducts, SkyTrain rails, tunnels, underpasses and abrupt elevation changes — the project aims to celebrate the site’s unusual formal qualities while reclaiming it for human, rather than vehicular, activity.

M.Tech. (Fine Art)<br>In this thesis I attempt to show that it is possible to resolve 'difference' most effectively in non-verbal ways. One method is in making art. To demonstrate this, I first describe my own thought system and belief structure, as part of western culture. I try to show the impasse this has reached. I then offer art-making, particularly within Post-modern premises, as a potent means of resolving 'difference'. I use my own and Barbara L 'Angie's work to show that this is possible, not only for black artists with Western influences, but also white artists with African influence

John Dewey’s Art as Experience (1934) declares art to be the “incomparable organ of instruction” on the third to last page of the book. This dissertation analyzes the place of children within the aesthetic philosophy Dewey expresses in the text and what the implications of Art as Experience could mean if applied to the art-making of children as the foundation for developing kindergarten and elementary curriculum. By exploring Dewey’s earlier writings on education and art, the dissertation develops a view of how art-making could be applied in a Deweyan pedagogy. The main influences on Dewey’s a
