Abstract:
Background: This project aimed to explore the experiences of people who compulsively hoard and how they make sense of their own hoarding behaviours. Method: A total of 11 compulsive hoarders were recruited and interviewed using a simple semi-structured interview format, designed for the purposes of the study. The resulting transcribed interviews were analyzed using interpretive-phenomenological analysis. Results: Four super-ordinate discrete, but interacting, themes were found: (1) childhood factors; (2) the participants' relationship to their hoarded items; (3) cognitive and behavioural avoidance of discard; and (4) the impact of hoarding on self, others and the home environment. The themes as a whole described people entrapped in massively cluttered physical environments of their own making. Efforts at discard appeared consistently sabotaged by cognitive/behavioural avoidance, thereby creating maintaining factors of associated personal distress and environmental decline. Conclusions: The results are discussed in the context of the extant evidence concerning hoarding, the distinct contribution made by the current results and the identified methodological shortcomings of the research approach.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and evaluation of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) for the library and information science (LIS) community, as this method has only recently been used for exploring experiences of various phenomena related to LIS. Design/methodology/approach – IPA is discussed within the phenomenological tradition. Two examples of recent IPA studies are examined in parallel to show application of the IPA method. Issues and challenges of applying IPA to LIS research questions are discussed. Findings – IPA is an alternative phenomenological method, adding to the repertoire of qualitative methods used for LIS research. It was an effective method for exploring experience among information professionals: it was equally suitable for studying reference and information service work for academic library professionals and burnout experience for information and communication technology workers. Originality/value – Only a few LIS studies have used IPA and no discussion or evaluation of the method has been published for this field. This paper provides a discussion of the method for LIS researchers interested in this emerging phenomenological method.

Abstract:
Objectives:There is a lack of research on the coaching relationship (O’Broin & Palmer, 2006a). The current paper will present the findings from a qualitativstudy that explored experiences of workplace coaching including the coaching relationship.Design:The study adopted a qualitative design and the data was analysed by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, Jaraman, & Osborn, 1999).Methods:Nine participants, from two large organisations, were interviewed about their experiences of coaching. Results:‘The coaching relationship’ was identified as a main theme which, in turn, comprised of three sub-themes; valuable coaching relationship; trust; and transparency. These themes highlighted that the coaching relationship was very valuablefor the participants and that this relationship was dependent on trust and improved by transparency. Conclusions:It was concluded that it is important that coaches are aware of, and are working with, the coaching relationship. Nevertheless, the participants also highlighted that the relationship was not the only factor that made coaching useful. Working towards goals and improving performance were also valuable components of the coaching. It was, therefore, suggested that coaching may be most beneficial if it incorporates a number of components, including a focus on the relationship.

Abstract:
Qualitative studies within autism research are gaining prominence, yet there is little evidence about the usefulness of particular qualitative approaches in reflecting the perspectives and experiences of autistic participants. This short report serves to introduce interpretative phenomenological analysis as one among a range of qualitative approaches to autism research. We argue that certain features of interpretative phenomenological analysis, including its commitment to an equality of voice and researcher reflexivity, may help to illuminate the experiences of autistic individuals. The procedures of interpretative phenomenological analysis are presented through the lens of 10 studies into autistic people’s experiences, and a case is made for the suitability of this approach within qualitative autism research.

Abstract:
Phenomenological research is commonly used worldwide in the field of health psychology to describe and explain the unique life experiences of health and disease. In Latvia, the phenomenological research in health psychology has not been performed yet. In this study, the methodological aspects of interpretative phenomenological analysis applied to explore the experience of fathers with a child in palliative care will be exemplified. The paper particularly aims to analyze the steps of interpretative phenomenological analysis applied during the study of one father’s experience. A single case will be presented detailing the disclosure of father’s experience and reflection on the process of interpretive phenomenological analysis on interview data. Conclusions in terms of the methodological aspects of interpretative phenomenological analysis will be provided.

Abstract:
One approach to getting to know a user and understanding the user experience (UX) is phenomenology. Currently, there is a lack of clearly defined methods for phenomenological analysis of user experience in design projects. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is an approach developed in psychology, and in this article, it is adapted to the case of a pro bono design project at a UX design agency supporting a disadvantaged group of people, newly arrived immigrants to Sweden. The design project involved research on how the immigrants experienced a service that introduced them to the job market. The adapted method, UX IPA, contributed to the pro bono project with a focus on both experience and meaning, which is important in design projects that relate to major events in users’ lives. The method was considered less appropriate in UX projects for specific products with highly instrumental use. The method can, in many cases, be too costly. However, costs can possibly be reduced by top-down approaches. In commercial UX projects, the method may be appropriate for the fuzzy front-end of design and innovation, but clients may be unimpressed by the small sample size. This can potentially be alleviated by mixed-methods approaches.

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to explore through interpretative phenomenological analysis on how psychotherapists understand and conceptualize women’s relationship experiences including those of intimacy and love with their abusive partners. In this study, 6 therapists were interviewed regarding women’s relationship experiences with abusive partners. The findings of this research challenge the notion that therapists can act as blank screens in therapy and has implications for psychological therapy, therapists, supervisors, training courses, services, and policymakers. These highlight the need for therapists, through self-reflection, supervision, continuous professional development, and personal therapy, to reflect on how they influence women’s disclosures of abusive experiences. The study supports the argument for a multitreatment approach with systemic understanding when working with women living with violence and abuse.

Abstract:
Purpose While interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) has been used in health psychology research, it has so far not been applied to seek deeper insights into the patients’ experiences about treatment. The purpose of this paper is to address this gap by using IPA to understand patient non-adherence. Design/methodology/approach In total, 18 patients with chronic conditions seeking healthcare services in Goa and Karnataka, India, were selected by using the snowball sampling method. In-depth interviews were conducted face to face. A semi-structured questionnaire developed by the researchers was used to collect the data. IPA was used to explore the themes to predict patient non-adherence. Findings The study results indicate that economic factors, health system related factors, social factors and psychological factors impact patient non-adherence. Patient non-adherence includes medication non-adherence and lifestyle modification non-adherence. Research limitations/implications Being cross sectional in design, the results may not be as appropriate as the results derived from a longitudinal study given that non-adherence occurs over time. Practical implications Patient non-adherence is a global health issue. Multidisciplinary approach to enhance patient adherence to treatment should form part of public healthcare policy. Social implications Exploring the factors influencing patient non-adherence will help the health-care industry stakeholders to reduce healthcare cost and improve patient’s quality of life. Originality/value Although there is extensive quantitative research on the prevalence of non-adherence, qualitative research is limited. This paper addresses this gap by using IPA to understand patient non-adherence and its factors and dimensions.

Abstract:
Aim:The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the IPA methodology and how this can be used in the field of educational psychology.Rationale:Originating in psychology and a popular choice in the health sciences, IPA is not yet a commonly used approach in educational psychology. The use of this methodology is gradually increasing. It is a particularly appropriate method to use for case studies and focusing on the perceived experiences of individuals, which is often relevant within educational research.Findings:This article presents an examination of IPA as a methodology, considering the theoretical and epistemological underpinnings.Limitations:IPA studies tend to focus only on small samples so there is no generalisability claimed. However, it is intended that, by close examination and metaphorically shining a light on a small area, this may lead to the illumination of the whole. Conclusions:The IPA methodology offers an approach that embraces the importance of individuals’ perceived experiences and the value in exploring the idiosyncratic accounts of small samples of ‘expert groups’. The holistic approach of IPA fits particularly well with the educational psychologists’ perspective of providing holistic support to pupils, schools, and families.

Abstract:
Background Clinical decision making is a complex, but important, research area. Decision-making theories have evolved to recognise that, although heuristics and biases can lead to error, expert clinician decision makers can also use intuition to good effect. More research is needed to understand how nurses and other clinicians make sense of complexity and uncertainty. Aim This paper discusses the utility of interpretative phenomenological analysis to elucidate clinical decision making, expertise and intuition. Methods A narrative review of published interpretative phenomenological analysis studies exploring clinical decision-making, and discussion of an exemplar study. Results A limited number of interpretative phenomenological analysis studies have been published in this area. By seeking out descriptions of real-world decision making, interpretative phenomenological analysis research provides ecologically valid insights into what it is like to make time-critical, high-stakes decisions with limited information. Conclusion Contributing to the study of complex clinical decision making in combination with other research approaches, interpretative phenomenological analysis research has significant unrealised potential to inform education, assessment and support interventions and the development of clinical guidelines. Future applications could enhance understanding of multi-disciplinary decision-making and the development of expertise and intuition, over time.

Abstract:
Neuroscience is increasingly part of the national dialogue regarding mental health and yet little is known about the experiences of mental health professionals learning and integrating neuroscience into their work. In this study, the authors explored mental health professionals' experiences learning Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB). Four super-ordinate themes emerged from an interpretative phenomenological analysis: (1) learning process as dynamic and engaging, (2) deepening knowledge and understanding of self and others, (3) personal and professional growth, and (4) impact on therapeutic practice. Three higher-order constructs appeared embedded within and across themes: learning as ongoing, person of the participant, and person of the instructor. These findings suggest learning IPNB through experiential-based means had a profound impact on participants' personal and professional development, specifically in areas related to characteristics of effective counselors. Implications for future research and mental health practice are discussed.

Abstract:
In this brief paper I suggest further scrutiny of the hermeneutic tradition to which interpretative phenomenological analysis is ‘strongly connected’ (Smith, 2004, p.40). This exhibits philosophically how everyday recurring practical understanding – tacit knowing-how in practices – is structured. Dialogue with research participants involves foregrounding emerging practices (e.g. coping with chronic pain) in structured awareness of recurring behaviour surfacing on reflection.
