Abstract:

This dissertation presents adaptation techniques that can achieve high spectral efficiency for single user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Two types of adaptation techniques, adaptive modulation and adaptive powe allocation, are employed to adapt the rate and the transmit power to fading channels. We start by investigating the adaptive modulation subject to a certain bit-error-ratio (BER) constraint, either instantaneous BER constraint or average BER constraint. However, it is well known that OFDM is plagued by a large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem. Zincor, a refinery in South Africa, uses the conventional roast-leachelectrowinning process to produce zinc metal. The roasting process of ZnS concentrate makes use of four Lurgi fluidized bed roasters to produce calcine (contains ZnO and ZnFe2O4 as zinc products) and SO2 gas. Abstract:

This thesis focused on investigating flow, coherent structures, and mechanisms leading to scour around a series of three submerged groynes in a high curvature (radius of curvature (R)/channel width (B)=1.5) channel bend using a Large Eddy Simulation Numerical (LES) model. Flow was investigated during both an initial and a later stage of scour. The results showed that the groynes appeared effective in keeping the main core of high streamwise velocity away from the outer bank wall in the region where they were installed, although high potential still existed for local scour around the groynes.
