This paper explores contemporary issues regarding the challenges of quantifying improved decision making and situational awareness as it is applied to emerging tools in aviation weather information dissemination. The authors explore the phenomena of increased/improved pilot decision making due to additional visual representation of visual weather data. General concepts such as past and present flight planning tools and procedures are discussed. Additionally, the authors explore the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Alaskan Weather Camera program as a potential case study for future explo

Harry Miles Johnson (1885–1953) took his Ph.D. under John B. Watson at Johns Hopkins University. During World War I Johnson was the first “aviation psychologist” and did pioneering research in vision, accident prevention, and sleep. He founded the Ph.D. experimental psychology program at Tulane University. He was an acerbic critic of psychology from a position of “objective empiricism.” This position was modulated by his beliefs in the importance of applications of psychology and an emphasis on underlying philosophical issues. Objective: This study evaluates the effectiveness of a training program designed to improve cross-functional coordination in airline operations. Background: Teamwork across professional specializations is essential for safe and efficient airline operations, but aviation education primarily emphasizes positional knowledge and skill. Although crew resource management training is commonly used to provide some degree of teamwork training, it is generally focused on specific specializations, and little training is provided in coordination across specializations. Method: The current study describes

Alcohol abuse by airline pilots poses a potential danger to the safety and welfare of the flying public. This paper analyzes two strategies for reducing pilot-error aviation accidents: conducting background checks on pilots for driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) convictions and random preflight alcohol testing of airline pilots. Although both policies have been implemented, no empirical research had previously been conducted to justify either strategy. The results and conclusions of this study are based on analysis of data obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration on the flying performanc

Background The analysis of data sets provides an increasingly difficult problem. The method of visual representation is considered an effective tool in many applications. In 1981, 11,500 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic controllers throughout the United States walked off their jobs. Since government employees are prohibited by law from striking, the controllers were ordered back to work or they would be subject to dismissal. When the return-to-work deadline expired, approximately 11,000 air traffic controllers were fired. After two years of unsuccessful attempts to improve supervisory and managerial effectiveness following the strike, the FAA incorporated rational-emotive therapy (RET) concepts into a subordinate survey feedback program for sup
