Abstract:
The Baptist Cooperative Programme is a system in which churches, who cooperate with the Nigeria Baptist Convention (NBC), make contributions in the form of certain percentages of their tithes, offerings, and undesignated income to their associations, state conferences, and the national body. This paper explores the effects of denominational loyalty on the Cooperative Programme of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC) and strategies to deepen this loyalty among church members. While I am not claiming credit for this year's panel session devoted to the question of intercommunion in the context of College Theology Society's convention with Baptist participation, I am deeply gratified that we as the church's theologians, Baptist and Catholic, are now raising the question in this manner, and that Professor Freeman has made clear for us what the ground rules seem to be for playing the hypothetical game of Baptist-Catholic intercommunion at a CTS convention. I have nothing to add to his spot-on summary of the Baptist “rules” for open communion and the Catholic “rules” for

In recent years the Southern Baptist Convention has been engaged in a struggle between fundamentalists and moderates. This conflict involves the proper use of certain terminology. Sociologist Lester Kurtz offers a paradigm using the dialectical terms "heresy" and "orthodoxy" to suggest that an institution uses struggles with internal deviance to strengthen and redefine itself. His model has been applied to the Southern Baptist convention to provide a better understanding of the struggle.

In 1979, fundamentalists began a movement to take control of the sixteen million-member Southern Baptist Convention. At the heart of their social agenda was the appropriate place of women in church, home, and society. Using rhetorical analysis, this article examines the resolutions and other key documents produced by the Convention since the 1970s and finds that under fundamentalist leadership, the Convention has developed an ideology that narrowly circumscribes gender roles for women around issues of women’s sexuality, reproduction, homes, and careers. From the late 1970s through the early 1990s, a minority conservative faction took over the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). This project seeks to answer the questions of how a fringe minority within the nation’s largest Protestant denomination could undertake such a feat and why they chose to do so. The framework through which this work analyzes these questions is one of competing worldviews that emerged within the SBC in response to decades of societal shifts and denominational transformations in the post-World War II era. Before being selected to replace L. K. Williams as senior pastor at Olivet Baptist in Chicago, he made stops in pastorates in Macomb, Mississippi, Omaha, Nebraska, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Abstract The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) was predisposed towards fundamentalist influence in the twentieth century. During the first wave of fundamentalist controversy during the early 1920s, Southern Baptists took note of developments among Northern Protestants. Relying on the idea that the South was insulated from modernist ideas, leaders encouraged Southern Baptists to support the contentions of the fundamentalists, not by giving credence to rumours of heterodoxy in Southern Baptist institutions, but by redoubling their commitment to their own denomination and its systems of funding.
