Psalms are songs that have principal importance in Jewish and Christian traditions; in the Eastern Orthodox and Western churches; in the Roman Catholic tradition and numerous Reformed divisions. Contemplation on this rich heritage considers the Psalm's contribution to the enrichment and magnification of the liturgy. The richness that the Psalms offer as song book, should be rediscovered and utilised. In this article, selected new Psalms, recently versified in Afrikaans by T T Cloete, are analysed. These Psalms are to be taken into official use on 28 October 2001. The place and function of hymn

In the interpretation of texts in modern Old Testament studies, a double change in perspective, which has important consequences for the liturgical use of the Psalms, is currently taking place. In the first reorientation, the movement is “from the hypothetically reconstructed ‘original’ text to the text written down in bookform and then to the canonical text”; in the second, the attention moves “from the text to the recipient”. On the one hand, the whole Psalter and its connec-tions with the totality of Holy Scripture are thus increasingly becoming the focus of attention. On the other hand, re

Despite growing recognition that early Jewish culture was far broader than the Bible, the biblical retains its hegemony in the study of early Jewish literature. Often, non-biblical materials are read either as proto-biblical, para-biblical, or biblical interpretation, assimilated into an evolutionary narrative with Bible as the telos. But ancient Jewish literature and culture are far more than proto-biblical. Through a case study of psalmic texts and Davidic traditions, this article illustrates how removing biblical lenses reveals a more vibrant picture of the resources and interests of early

In The Sexual Politics of Meat, Carol Adams develops a feminist-vegetarian theory of the absent referent. She argues that cultural imagery and semantics function to make moral consideration of the animal absent from the act of eating meat. For instance, the use of the word “meat” for nonhuman animals and “flesh” for humans helps humans deny that meat is the flesh of another sentient being that can suffer like humans and wants to live. When translators of the Hebrew Bible use “ivory” for Hebrew shen in Ps 45.8(9) rather than “teeth,” this makes the elephants who provided their tusks the absent

Dorothy L. Sayers' 1941–1942 radio play cycle on the life of Christ, The Man Born to be King, is often lauded for its use of the vernacular, though the scholarly discussion of this aspect of her work often creates the false impression that Sayers was working with a Greek New Testament in one hand and a blank piece of paper in the others. This study focuses on the subtle but clear evidence of Sayers' use of the Authorized Version of the Bible, particularly in the areas of narration and Old Testament quotation as well as additional evidence of the Coverdale Psalms from the Book of Common Prayer.

Spirituality is understood as a life orientation that presents itself both in worship and in a re-ordering of the elements of a person's life to a growing correspondence with the reality presented in worship. It finds expression in a web of relationships between God, the particular individual, the other and creation. Integrated spirituality is spirituality that is equally serious about God and our life in the material world, and it refuses to separate these two passio

Abstract:
This dissertation argues that Psalm 108 introduces the eschatological notions of the king and of the kingdom into its canonical group (Pss 108–110) through its inclusion of a non-historically specific superscription, its quotation and paraphrase of earlier psalmic material (Pss 57 and 60), and its canonical placement in Book V of the Psalter. Chapter 1 presents this study’s thesis along with three undergirding assumptions: (1) the Psalter is a book; (2) individual psalms should be read in sequence; and (3) the Psalter progressively tells a story along redemptive-historical lines. In this thesis amen is traced down to its usage in Old Testament texts selected according to their liturgical setting. Abstract:
This chapter details an interview with Czesław Miłosz on translating the Bible into Polish, which was conducted by Ewa Czarnecka. Czarnecka observes that a growing interest in the sphere of sacrum can be observed in Miłosz's poetry, a passage from history to metaphysics. On the other hand, Miłosz stresses his obligations to Polish literature, in the sense of strengthening it as a language of dignity and hierarchy, an end that the translation of the Book of Psalms should serve. Meanwhile, Miłosz explains that one of the basic problems one encounters in translating the psalms is that there are words which have no exact equivalent in the modern languages. The trick is to find the Polish language's specific register where its rhythmic consistency, its expressive power can be put to use. The point is to find the specific laws of the Polish language.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a narrative of the sustained use of Genevan forms of worship in the British Isles after Knox and Goodman’s return from exile. Genevan devotional practices were not strictly celebrated by the former exiles alone. The broader singing of metrical psalms in England aroused suspicion by authorities of a popular brand of Calvinism. It was not ultimately Cranmer’s Latin translation of the Bible that English and Scottish Protestants shared, but a common edition of the Bible produced by the English exile congregation in Geneva. Gaelic translations of the Geneva Bible intended for an Irish readership extended the edition’s use even further. The discussion also draws attention to Archbishop Adam Loftus’s missionary plan to deploy Goodman in Ireland in order to introduce reformed worship.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at Philo's biblical commentaries. Philo's commentary activity on the Jewish Scriptures must be appreciated in the context of Alexandria, where he became familiar with critical methods of scholarship and engaged in a lively dialogue with colleagues in the Jewish community. He developed an innovative approach, stressing the textual difficulties or “stumbling-blocks” in the Bible and using them as stepping stones for allegorical interpretation. Philo argued that the imperfection of the biblical text was intentional, as Moses thus wished to alert his readers to a higher spiritual meaning. Philo is moreover the first known interpreter who made extensive use of secondary and tertiary texts, innovatively adducing verses from the Prophets and Psalms in order to interpret Genesis. This intertextual approach enabled him to uncover a mystical meaning in the Pentateuch that hinted at the soul's ascent to God, often described in overtly sexual imagery.

Abstract:
In contemporary biblical scholarship that investigates the question of whether Jesus of Nazareth was raised from the dead, scholars generally pay some attention to the Old Testament. The first part of this chapter therefore examines the findings of the New Testament scholars Dale Allison and N. T. Wright and the Hebrew Bible scholar Jon Levenson. The chapter next examines St. Thomas Aquinas’s use of the Old Testament in commenting on John 20–1, the chapters of John’s Gospel that treat Jesus’ Resurrection appearances. In his commentary, of course, Aquinas is not attempting to investigate the historicity of Jesus’ Resurrection. Commenting on John 20–1, Aquinas includes 139 quotations from the Old Testament. The chapter argues that the verses selected by Aquinas play a valuable cumulative role in supporting the truth of the claim that Jesus rose from the dead.
