Abstract:
The relevance of the research is based on more than a year-long restrictions experienced by people of Lithuania and worldwide because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical part presents a concept for bibliotherapic recommendations for reading. From an interdisciplinary point of view, the research integrates insights from the domains of psychology, public health, information and communication and literary criticism. Individuals experiencing psychological problems, by delving into literature which encourages reflection of humanistic values, during their in-depth reading process, can not only distract themselves from stressful everyday life but also, while identifying themselves with personages of literary works, better conceive themselves and their environment as well as find new ways to solve their problems. This justifies the applicability of bibliotherapy for those who experience social exclusion during the pandemic. The open survey collected data from 17 experts (12 members of the Lithuanian Bibliotherapy Association and 5 practitioners involved in bibliotherapy projects; 4 study participants from the health service sector (psychotherapists); 6 representatives from the education sector; and 7, from the cultural sector). A recommendatory list of books for passive bibliotherapy sessions was drawn. The list comprises 2 topics: (1) recommendations for general bibliotherapy and (2) fiction for health practitioners (81 books in total, 43% of which are accessible online). Every entry in the list includes metadata required for the identification of the work (AUTHOR and title), a brief substantiation of bibliotherapic aspects formulated by experts and the information about the accessibility of the book on the portal ibiblioteka.lt. The list of bibliotherapic literature can be also useful for health practitioners, social activities professionals, organisers of local community activities, librarians and those who wish to provide help by reading.

Abstract:
Bibliotherapy from a Literary Perspective This article aims to introduce and discuss the phenomenon of bibliotherapy in the context of comparative literature in Sweden. It opens with an introduction to the field of bibliotheraphy, defining this as the use of books to aid people in their healing processes. The article discusses this definition, and provides a short historical overview of the treatment of bibliotheraphy, placing particular focus on ”interactive” bibliotheraphy which, in many respects, has become the model of bibliotherapeutic intervention today. Primarily, however, this article explores how a literary perspective could contribute to the research on bibliotheraphy. Firstly, I consider a variety of different studies and their views on bibliotheraphy in order to make clear the values and the perspectives on literature underpinning much of the research in the field. Secondly, I examine the different conceptions of the reader and the reading process expressed in the research on bibliotheraphy in relation to reader-response criticism. Among other things, the model of the bibliotherapeutical reading process used in the school of interactive bibliotheraphy is discussed. This model is shown to be highly normative when it comes to how one can read in order to be aided in the healing process. In conclusion, the article raises questions concerning how other views on bibliotheraphy might produce alternative models of reading.

Abstract:
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a disease caused by HIV that can lower a person's immune status to trigger an opportunistic infection and cause death. HIV / AIDS can infect all age groups, including teenagers. Bibliotherapy is a learning model to change teenagers' knowledge of HIV / AIDS. We aimed to analyze bibliotherapy's effect on teenagers' knowledge of HIV / AIDS. We used quasi-experimental research with a nonequivalent control group design approach. The population in this study was 30 teenagers, with the technique of determining the sample using purposive sampling. The research instrument used is a knowledge questionnaire. Data analysis using the Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney test. The analysis result showed significant differences between the pretest and post-test in the intervention group (p-value= 0.001) and control group (p-value= 0.044). Bivariate test used Mann Whitney indicating an effect of the bibliotherapy method on teenagers’ knowledge about HIV / AIDS (p-value = 0.002; p <0.05). The effect of bibliotherapy is to interpret words, sentences, and even images that are captured by the sense of sight and will be conveyed to the brain by optical chiasm when someone reads information. Therefore, the conclusion is bibliotherapy method has an effect on the knowledge of teenagers about HIV/AIDS. Nurses' role in applying bibliotherapy is to increase teenagers' knowledge to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS in the community.

Abstract:
This article discusses the historical development of bibliotherapy and how books can be used in the treatment of a range of minor mental health conditions. The article provides a brief historical account of how books have been used in institutions through the centuries and how the bibliotherapuetic process works through the use of texts from which the reader gains an insight into their personal situation by identifying with a character experiencing similar problems. Bibliotherapy as both clinical and community-based treatment is discussed through a number of case studies from the critical literature, in particular the Ayrshire Read Yourself Well scheme and the Reading Well/Books on Prescription scheme. The results of a medical trial on the benefits of reading a novel based on MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans of readers are then discussed.

Abstract:
Cancer patients experience severe health issues and the resulting emotional and psychological complications; therefore, in addition to medical treatment, they also need emotional/psychological support. Bibliotherapy is one of the possible ways of support. The study is aimed at developing a concept of bibliotherapy for cancer patients and providing practical recommendations for service organizers. It uses a targeted information search on bibliotherapy services in Lithuanian public libraries and a questionnaire survey. The concept of bibliotherapy is based on the theories of nursing, social work and library of science. Bibliotherapy services for cancer patients can be provided in primary health care settings or public libraries. The bibliotherapy service in libraries must be conducted in cooperation with medical professionals. The bibliotherapy service, which can be didactic/informative bibliotherapy (recommended reading lists), personal development bibliotherapy (reading services in public libraries), and reading groups (clubs), can be organized in public libraries or in institutions that provide emotional/psychological support. A number of reading clubs with elements of bibliotherapy have been introduced in Lithuanian libraries. A similar service has been identified for a target group, i.e., cancer patients. On the one hand, naming the target audience of the club may traumatize the potential beneficiaries of the service, and on the other hand, it allows for better dissemination of information and better access for patients. Cooperation between institutions is needed to enable patients to learn about bibliotherapy and to have more confidence in the service.

Abstract:
This article explores bibliotherapy as a process in which death-related literature is used to help bereaved children cope with experiences of death and loss. For that exploration, this article defines bibliotherapy, offers an argument in support of its value, and suggests how a potential bibliotherapist might begin. Suggestions are made for selecting and using stories in bibliotherapy. Since most bibliotherapy is actually used as an optional tool in bereavement support groups, guidelines are offered as to how it might best be implemented in that context. Much of this discussion is also relevant to the use of bibliotherapy on a one-to-one basis involving a particular child and an adult guide. Examples of stories and books for children that I have used in bibliotherapy are mentioned throughout this article.

Abstract:
Today, the library therapy is a promising library service that librarians can offer in the market. Its efficiency depends significantly on the level of library therapy studies. The history of bibliotherapy in Russia and worldwide is reviewed in brief; approaches to bibliotherapy classification and understanding of bibliotherapy as a discipline at the interface of medicine and librarianship are discussed. The most important stages in the development of bibliotherapy as a scientific discipline are presented. Against the historical retrospective, the main areas of modern bibliotherapy are analyzed. The history of the discipline demonstrates that the bibliotherapeutic studies have been within the methodological framework of library science, cultural studies, psychology, and pedagogy. The vectors of bibliotherapeutic process and the goals of applying bibliotherapy are described. The study and determination of the bibliotherapeutic potential of the book is one of the important problems associated with reading for psychotherapeutic purposes. The author emphasizes that the bibliotherapy effectiveness is determined by several factors, i.e. the professional competitiveness of librarian and quality of bibliotherapeutic service with these two working in synergy.

Despite its general acceptance, there has been no research exploring the actual use of bibliotherapy by Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs). This study sought to determine the extent to which LCSWs, represented by a random sample from one state, used bibliotherapy for specific problems, identified relevant variables that influence bibliotherapy use,and compiled a list of books currently used by respondents. Results suggest that bibliotherapy is used for numerous specific problems and LCSW endorsement of bibliotherapy by LCSWs is similar to that of respondents in other disciplines. Unlike studies involving other disciplines, LCSW usage patterns were not related to gender and less related to employment settings.

Studies in trauma healing and teaching ESL students have been done before. In addition, bibliotherapy has been used in educational and psychological disciplines. However, there are few studies that explore the use of bibliotherapy and trauma healing in ESL refugee students. My objective for this study was to explore bibliotherapy to see what experiences/stories surfaced from students’ lives and what connections/ reflections students made to the books we read in the bibliotherapy sessions. This was a qualitative single case study; I observed and worked with a group of ESL refugee students in an after-school program. However, for this study I followed the progress of one student over our bibliotherapy sessions. I used observations, interviews and artifacts analysis. Data was collected, triangulated and coded. I found out that the student Identified herself to some degree with the texts read during our bibliotherapy sessions. However, stories from past traumatic experiences surfaced during oral discussions but became more visible whenever she was writing.

Recent developments in psychology have rekindled interest in the therapeutic potential of literature. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, wherein many children lack access to conventional psychological assistance, bibliotherapy emerges as a viable aid for addressing personal issues. However, not all children's books are suitable for this purpose, necessitating meticulous scrutiny to ascertain suitable therapeutic reading materials. Through qualitative examination, this study scrutinized the affective bibliotherapy approach within fiction and illustrated books, unveiling three essential bibliotherapy attributes in children's literature. Comprehensive examples are offered for each feature, aiming to enrich future bibliotherapy research and application.

This study explores the current trends of bibliotherapy within the public library community in Malaysia. A qualitative data collection approach using a structured interview was employed to elicit the opinions of five public librarians, two practitioners specializing in mental health, and a bibliotherapy writer. Eight (8) interview transcripts have been analyzed using theme-based analysis. This study shows that bibliotherapy in Malaysia is a new trend and concept. The public librarians were unnoticed that they had already practiced the technique due to the lack of bibliotherapy awareness among public librarians. Abstract:
Bibliotherapy, as an interdisciplinary field, is undeniably heavily researched on a global scale, yet there are relatively few studies, especially empirical ones, devoted exclusively to the problems of public libraries, while those that would focus only on the services provided by librarians themselves, excluding cooperation with specialists in the field of health promotion, have been undetected at all. The concept, typology, methodology of bibliotherapy and specialists, who can provide services in this field, especially the scope of librarians’ possibilities, are still being discussed in multidirectional works of bibliotherapy. The article presents the results of a quantitative empirical study based on the synthesis of multidisciplinary bibliotherapy research, which allowed to determine the librarians’ own possibilities to provide bibliotherapy services, revealing the state of bibliotherapy services provision in Lithuanian public libraries in 2022. In addition, the article provides a comparative analysis of this study and secondary sources, which showed the evolution and development possibilities of the provision of bibliotherapy services in Lithuanian public libraries. It was found that in most libraries, at least one bibliotherapy service is provided by their own staff. Out of them, slightly more than twice (both qualitatively and quantitatively) of services are attributable to passive bibliotherapy, exclusively covering an intrapersonal level of communication, based on recommendations of books to be read, which is traditionally more characteristic of these institutions, rather than those to be associated with its active variety, which includes an individual interaction of a reader with a librarian inspired by the read book, or a group one - with the members of the book club led by them that integrates an interpersonal level of communication as well. However, as shown by the comparative analysis of the results of the quantitative research of the same object of 2022 and 2011, the active bibliotherapy, which promotes the interaction of readers, is also becoming popular in Lithuania as the functions of libraries expand in the direction of socialization. This is largely in line with global trends. Summarizing the data of the latest research presented in the article and previous secondary sources, it can be stated that in the early 21st century, library bibliotherapy began to be developed at the formal level, and after the development breakthrough recorded at the turn of the first and second decades it has already established itself as a service provided by Lithuanian public libraries. The librarians’ attitudes towards it are positive, the motivation to expand the range or scope of bibliotherapy services is increasing. Although librarians both independently and institutionally, usually through projects or occasional trainings deepen their knowledge in this field, yet its lack is still mentioned, and in particular, the lack of practical skills necessary for organizing more formal active bibliotherapy activities, which leads to a lack of confidence in their own abilities and induces them to limit themselves to the role of an event organizer with a guest lecturer. As one of the ways to solve this problem, long-term institutionalized training in bibliotherapy is mentioned. It is available to those who want to improve in this field and to expand library bibliotherapy services, which help to implement the traditional functions of book repositories and reading promotion and more advanced, globally relevant functions of community gathering and reader education.

Abstract:
The theory of the Gestalt therapy which is based on the humanist attitude towards the personality is applied in the social work, education, etc. It is considered to serve as a foundation of interactive bibliotherapy. However, as the professional discourse of the experts of Gestalt has demonstrated, and as it has been proven by the lack of research of the application of bibliotherapy in Gestalt therapy, bibliotherapy is still being underused as an option in Gestalt treatment. Generally, even though the interdisciplinary field of bibliotherapy has been extensively explored, there is an incentive to share the scarce (in terms of quantity) models of the applied nature which would define how bibliotherapy could be systematically involved into various consultation practices with the objective to enhance their efficiency. The article presents one of the possible models of practical application of interactive bibliotherapy in the Gestalt practice which is based on the triple dialogue (in interaction with the therapist) and written reflection of brief fictional texts. The model is based on the grounds of aligning the paradigms of Gestalt therapy and bibliotherapy. Cases of 60 clients who were being applied bibliotherapy throughout the 7 years of operation of one practice were explored with the emphasis on the qualitative aspect. The results of the research proved the appropriateness of bibliotherapy as a secondary means to be applied in Gestalt therapy. It has been established that, under the appropriate field conditions, the properly selected fictional text as the mediator through the dialogue-based reflection with the therapist may help the client to perceive his/her unsatisfied needs and to alter in the desired direction within a shorter timeframe, i.e., it enables personality transformation. In such cases, works of fiction serve the function of the stimulants of the authentic intrapersonal communication (i.e., one’s inner experiences and their inner reflection) and the amplifying or reinforcing function of the stimulants of interpersonal communication. This corroborates the data of neurological research indicating that fiction intensively stimulates and even (trans)forms the intellectual and emotional self- and world perception of a reading individual. The presented model of the application of bibliotherapy may be beneficial not only for the practitioners of Gestalt, but also for librarians, social workers and education specialists as well as the practitioners of therapies of other types, while especially considering the lack of systematic descriptions of the application of bibliotherapy as an additional and enhancing means, which has been highlighted in the relevant literature.

Abstract:
The United States is facing an epidemic of mental illness, affecting nearly 60 million Americans annually (http://www.nami.org/ ). The World Health Organization describes mental health as “a long neglected problem” and has established an action plan for 2013-2020 (http://www.who.int/mental_health/action_plan_2013/en/). One way to combat mental illness is through bibliotherapy, which is the use of written materials including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to support emotional and psychiatric healing.Bibliotherapy has been in existence since ancient times, but began in earnest in the United States in the 1850’s during the “Great Awakening.” At that time, mental illness began to be seen as a medical condition rather than a supernatural phenomenon. Since then, due to the changing nature of our institutions, interest in bibliotherapy waned until the 1950’s when there was a slight resurgence in its practice. However, in the last 20 years, bibliotherapy has gained a stronghold in the United Kingdom. To relieve the stress of an overcrowded mental health system, public policy in the UK has supported the use of bibliotherapy in a variety of its institutions. There are many ways to conduct bibliotherapy, but studies show that when the process is interactive, such as in a support group setting, the results are better. Also, bibliotherapy can be conducted by many sorts of professionals, including doctors, therapists, social workers, teachers, and librarians. Studies also show that when the bibliotherapists are trained in the best practices of bibliotherapy, results improve. Bibliotherapy is an effective, low-cost alternative for people in need of therapeutic assistance. The UK model should be studied and implemented in the United States and in other nations to help solve the mental health crisis.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to find out the use of bibliotherapy to prevent negative behavior of students at school. The research method used by researchers was qualitative with a descriptive study approach, which was the focus of this research using the counseling technique of bibliotherapy to prevent negative behavior of junior high school students. Data collection techniques carried out included interviews, observation, and documentation studies of several documents related to the research topic. The results of this study indicate that the users of the bibliotherapy technique themselves are guidance and counseling teachers who are professionals, meaning they must be graduates or bachelors in guidance and counseling. While the use of bibliotherapy techniques has proven effective in preventing or reducing students' negative behaviors such as smoking, bullying, being disrespectful to teachers, and fighting, besides that kind of guidance and counseling, teachers use group guidance with discussion techniques. While for bibliotherapy, it is used during individual counseling.

Abstract:
Bibliotherapy represents the planned use of literary texts and devices to encourage awareness and processing of emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal problems in individuals with different types of psychosocial distress. As a part of expressive arts-therapies, it includes precisely formulated goals, basic stages, and methodology that are described in this paper. In addition, an overview of recent scientific research on this topic is provided in order to gain insights on the most commonly used approaches, methodologies, and outcomes obtained, as well as the effectiveness of bibliotherapy. Based on our evaluation, we concluded that the use of bibliotherapy is an appropriate complementary approach in educational settings, for children with special needs, as well as for maintaining mental health. Considering the limitations of bibliotherapy, we emphasise the need for further research with the aim of improving practical models and assessment tools. Bibliotherapy can be a promising part of a multimodal educational and rehabilitation approach that recognises the power of language arts, which simultaneously supports both realistic and transcendental aspects of human existence.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of bibliotherapy education on the social-emotional skills of psychological counselling and guidance candidates. The test group of the study consisted of psychological counselling and guidance students who participated voluntarily in the course named “Applied Counselling and Bibliotherapy”. A pre-test and post-test experimental design without a control group was used in the study. The Social Skills Inventory was used, for determining the social skills level of students before and after they are provided with bibliotherapy education. It was concluded from the study that there is a significant difference in the general scores for the social skills of female students after bibliotherapy education and the scores they obtained in the sub-dimensions of social expressivity. With the given reading materials and method of delivery, when the effect of bibliotherapy education on social skills level was compared, it was found in the final test that female students’ scores in the sub-dimensions of emotional expressivity and social control were significantly higher than those of male students. However, it was concluded that male students’ scores in the sub-dimension of emotional control were higher than those of female students.

Abstract:
The healing potential of books has been known since ancient times, while the term “bibliotherapy” was used for the first time in 1916. Since that time, the concept of bibliotherapy has still been developing. The goal of the article is to discover the methods of using bibliotherapy among young monks and students in theological seminaries. The author tries to explain the definition of bibliotherapy through the prism of literature — books written by the biggest Polish figures of this discipline, e.g. Irena Borecka or Wiktor Czernianin. Furthermore, some paragraphs of the text are devoted to the structure of The Holy Bible. The author highlights includes various paragraphs or scenes that might have a healing potential. Finally, the author reveals that the answers given by young monks and students in theological seminaries leads to the clear conclusion that using bibliotherapy among them happens very gently and often inadvertently. The article presents multiple observations when the survey respondents felt better, consoled, or comforted after reading The Holy Bible. The results of the study also point to moments when they experienced katharsis. The text presents their very own observations as extraordinary material for future reference.

Abstract:
As one key element of establishing a superhero persona, many superhero myths are based on the principle of experiencing parental loss at an early age. This study examined the impact of group bibliotherapy using superhero stories with children and adolescents who have experienced parental absence. The 187 participants who resided in foster care were divided into three experimental conditions: Bibliotherapy with superhero stories, bibliotherapy without superheroes, and no treatment. Four dependent variables were tested in a pre–post–follow-up design: Anxiety, violent behavior, aggression, and future orientations. Results indicated that the strongest desired outcomes were obtained in the superhero treatment condition: There were significant positive changes on all four dependent variables, with changes sustained at follow-up. In the other treatment condition, significant changes were observed on only two variables and were not sustained at follow-up. No significant changes were observed in the non-treatment group. On the future orientations scale, only children in the superhero condition indicated change: They gained in future goals and had reduced fantasies about home. In general, results support the effectiveness of bibliotherapy with children and clearly point to the unique contribution of bibliotherapy content tailored to children's specific needs.

This study investigated how LIS professionals and health practitioners have adopted bibliotherapy and relevant information services to enhance mental health issues in Nigeria since 1962 to date. The study adopted a narrative research design of qualitative methodology. Semi-structured interviews using audio recordings and personal observations/interactions by the researchers were the instruments for data collection. The researchers collected data from three purposively selected academics whose areas of expertise cut across library and information science and psychiatry. The data collected were presented in a narrative form, with insertion of verbatim transcriptions where nuanced expressions were identified. The findings from the study revealed that bibliotherapy is used by clinical psychologists in neuropsychiatric hospitals in Nigeria; however, LIS professionals do not have the knowledge and adequate skills to practise bibliotherapy. The study recommends that the time is ripe for NLA to pragmatically implement recommendations that the LIS curricula in Nigerian library schools be diversified and expanded to incorporate valuable realms like bibliotherapy.
