Biodelfurization of petroleum has emerged as a potential alternative to the hydrodesulfurization and oxidative desulfurization processes. However, the main obstacle in its commercial application is the efficiency and practicality of using bacterial cells. Pseudomonas sp. strain KWN5 was tested for the ability to use dibenzothiophene (DBT) in n-tetradecane as the sole sulfur source with two phase oil-water system. The biodesulfurization ability of strain KWN5 was evaluated by immobilized cells with dibenzothiophene as substrates. The cells immobilized by entrapping them with sodium alginate (SA

This work presents a membrane bioreactor prototype used to separate emulsion phases formed in the biodesulfurization reaction. Hydrophobic membranes used for the construction of the prototype allow the separation of the organic/watery phases. The separation unit resembles a tube and carcass heat exchanger. By feeding the emulsion through the housing and due to the pressure gradient pushed on the membrane, the organic phase pass through and allow to obtain an organic phase free of cells and water. Several organic phase/watery phase ratios and many cellular concentrations were evaluated. Results

ABSTRACT The range of sulfur compounds in fuel oil and the substrate range and preference of the biocatalytic system determine the maximum extent to which sulfur can be removed by biodesulfurization. We show that the biodesulfurization apparatus in Rhodococcus sp. strain ECRD-1 is able to attack all isomers of dibenzothiophene including those with at least four pendant carbons, with a slight preference for those substituted in the α-position. With somewhat less avidity, this apparatus is also able to attack substituted benzothiophenes with between two and seven pendant carbons. Some compounds

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration and size of Na-alginate beads that have the highest degradation activity of dibenzothiophene. Biodesulfurization (BDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) was performed using 3 Na-alginate concentrations and 3 different beads sizes in the oil model system. Biodesulfurization was performed with incubation for 24 hours. The previous research showed that sodium alginate (Na-alginate) was an appropriate immobilizing agent compared to other immobilized materials. Na-alginate 4% show the activity of the degradation of the most good that is 66.33% (b

This study endeavors to develop an economical and user-friendly biological sulfide oxidation system and explore its mechanism for generating biological elemental sulfur under micro-aerobic conditions using psychrophilic anaerobically digested media (liquid/solid inoculums obtained from agricultural livestock wastes) for sulfide-free biogas production. With an initial hydrogen sulfide concentration of 5000 ppm, a biogas flow rate ranging from 0.9 to 1.8 L/h-Linoculum-mix, and an air injection rate of 0.6–1% (oxygen concentration in biogas), a remarkable biodesulfurization efficiency of 99–100%

The packing material selection for a bioreactor is an important factor to consider, since the characteristics of this material can directly affect the performance of the bioprocess, as well as the investment costs. Different types of low cost packing materials were studied in columns to reduce the initial and operational costs of biogas biodesulfurization. The most prominent (PVC pieces from construction pipes) was applied in a bench-scale biotrickling filter to remove the H2S of the biogas from a real sewage treatment plant in Brazil, responsible for 90 thousand inhabitants.
