Biodelfurization of petroleum has emerged as a potential alternative to the hydrodesulfurization and oxidative desulfurization processes. However, the main obstacle in its commercial application is the efficiency and practicality of using bacterial cells. Pseudomonas sp. strain KWN5 was tested for the ability to use dibenzothiophene (DBT) in n-tetradecane as the sole sulfur source with two phase oil-water system. The biodesulfurization ability of strain KWN5 was evaluated by immobilized cells with dibenzothiophene as substrates. The cells immobilized by entrapping them with sodium alginate (SA

This work presents a membrane bioreactor prototype used to separate emulsion phases formed in the biodesulfurization reaction. Hydrophobic membranes used for the construction of the prototype allow the separation of the organic/watery phases. The separation unit resembles a tube and carcass heat exchanger. By feeding the emulsion through the housing and due to the pressure gradient pushed on the membrane, the organic phase pass through and allow to obtain an organic phase free of cells and water. ABSTRACT The range of sulfur compounds in fuel oil and the substrate range and preference of the biocatalytic system determine the maximum extent to which sulfur can be removed by biodesulfurization. We show that the biodesulfurization apparatus in Rhodococcus sp. strain ECRD-1 is able to attack all isomers of dibenzothiophene including those with at least four pendant carbons, with a slight preference for those substituted in the α-position. With somewhat less avidity, this apparatus is also able to attack substituted benzothiophenes with between two and seven pendant carbons. Some compounds
