Abstract:

Abstract This paper reports on variation among speakers of Raga, an Oceanic language of Pentecost island, Vanuatu, in their use of borrowings from Bislama, the national language of Vanuatu, an English-lexifier contact language. The study measures the frequency of borrowings from Bislama in the speech of 50 speakers, surveys speakers’ strategies in assimilating loanwords into Raga and quantifies speakers’ rate of lexical replacement and insertion. This corpus of natural speech reveals an overall low incidence of borrowing from Bislama at 1.6 Bislama words per 100 recorded words. Women and younger speakers borrow more frequently from Bislama. Young speakers use borrowings in equal measure to add to their vocabulary and replace Raga words, while their elders tend to borrow from Bislama to add to their vocabulary, rather than replace Raga words.

Abstract:

Recent years have seen the questioning of a number of widely held views about the early development of Melanesian Pidgin, with some writers debating Mühlhäusler's claim that many of the characteristic features of modern Tok Pisin represent later, twentieth-century, innovations, rather than retentions from what others would argue was a more modern-looking Melanesian Pidgin spoken in the late nineteenth century. This paper argues in support of the contention that many of the lexical and grammatical features that today seem to suggest that Tok Pisin has innovated relatively recently are in fact older retentions, and that these features were recorded in an important grammatical sketch of Bislama published by Père Pionnier in 1913 on the basis of information that he gathered in the 1890s in Vanuatu.

Abstract:

Bislama allows phonetically overt and phonetically null noun phrases (NPs) in argument positions. This article explores constraints on the occurrence of null NPs in direct object position. Discourse factors (given/new status of referent, antecedent's form) and syntactic factors (antecedent's grammatical role, identification by a transitive suffix) are investigated. Morphosyntactic and semantic features that might transfer from substrate languages (referent's animacy, (in)alienable possession) and social factors (age, sex, language of education) are also examined. Strong priming effects for grammatical role of the antecedent and form of the antecedent are identified. Also salient are inalienable possession and semantic type of the verb. The effect of inalienable possession shows the highly abstract transfer of substrate features, raising questions about the modularity of grammar. It is argued that a key motivation for such transfer is not just linguistic availability, but the social and cultural significance of different kinds of possession in Melanesia.

Melanesian Pidgin is a cover term for closely related varieties of the English-lexifier Pacific Pidgin that is spoken in Vanuatu (where it is known as Bislama), Papua New Guinea (where it is known as Tok Pisin), and Solomon Islands (where it is known as Pijin). Structurally and lexically, Bislama is closer to Solomon Islands Pijin than either is to Tok Pisin. The precise nature of many of the structural differences between these three varieties of Melanesian Pidgin has not been widely described, partly because Bislama, and particularly Solomon Islands Pijin, are relatively little described in the literature. This paper aims to describe one grammatical feature which differentiates these three varieties. The grammatical feature that is the subject of this paper is the form se. It carries a particularly high functional load in Bislama. The same form is also present in Solomons Pijin, though in this variety of Melanesian Pidgin, it has a sharply reduced functional load as compared with Bislama. On the other hand, in most current varieties of Tok Pisin, it is almost completely absent. In those varieties of Tok Pisin in which it is present, its status as a genuinely independent grammatical or lexical item is questionable. This paper will also go somewhat beyond a straightforward structural description of se in Melanesian Pidgin, as it will also reconstruct its history in the three varieties of the language. The paper will concentrate on Bislama, as it is in this variety of the language that the form se is most widely used.

Abstract:

A corpus of conversational Bislama (a Melanesian creole spoken in Vanuatu, related to Tok Pisin and Solomon Islands Pijin) suggests that during the 20th century the creole has developed a set of regular inflectional morphemes on the verb that agree in person and number with the subject of the finite clause. It is shown that, where the agreement paradigm is referentially richest, the language is also beginning to grammaticize a tendency towards phonetically null subjects (pro-drop). Three possible analyses of the Bislama verb phrase are evaluated; consistent support for only one is found in the spoken Bislama corpus. The resulting paradigm of subject–verb agreement (i, oli, and Ø) is analyzed in terms of the historical development of Bislama. It is argued that the synchronic agreement marking reflects properties derived from (i) the lexifier (English), (ii) the substrate languages, and (iii) universal grammar. No one component fully accounts for the patterns of agreement marking observed. Instead, a synthesis of all three is required, as previously observed by, for example, G. Sankoff (1984) and Mufwene (1996). Substrate languages provide a model for subject agreement prefixing on the verb; the person features associated with the lexifier ‘he’ continue to be reflected in the distribution of Bislama i; and phonetically null subjects are emerging as the norm where the agreement paradigm best serves to identify the subject referent. This is consonant with generative accounts of null subject systems. Parallels with other languages (e.g., Italian, Franco-Provençal, Hebrew, Finnish) are examined.

Abstract:

During the last few years, mobile phones and social networks have deeply changed relationships and, insidiously, the use and representations of languages in Vanuatu. In spite of being very recent, it seems that new ways of communication imply changes regarding the various ways of using and adapting languages, amongst which are code-switching and language-shifting. Bislama, the national local lingua franca, is becoming more and more used in phone conversations. Internet and especially social networks (such as Facebook) are revealing new language strategies in social intercourses. This article examines interactions of languages that are mediated through social networks and mobile phone exchanges. More specifically, this paper discusses different language ideologies that are manifest in and deployed over forms of telecommunication.

AbstractDo the processes of replication, transfer, and calquing operate on speakers' mental organization of variables? Can the comparison of constraint rankings across languages provide evidence for (or against) the transfer of features in cases of long-term language contact? This article suggests yes to both questions. It undertakes a comparison of constraint rankings on null subjects and null objects in a corpus of Bislama and a corpus of Tamambo narratives to demonstrate the potential and limitations of such methods. It concludes that these methods: (i) allow us to particularize our definitions ofreplication,transfer, andcalquingto inherently variable domains, and (ii) strengthen connections between variationist sociolinguistics and the fields of creolistics and language contact.

Abstract:

Tamambo is an Oceanic language spoken on the western half of the island of Malo in northern Vanuatu. There are at least 3000 speakers of the language, most of them living on Malo, with several hundred residing on the neighboring island of Santo and in the country's capital, Port Vila. Many speakers are also fluent in Bislama (an English-lexifier creole spoken in Vanuatu), one of three official languages. A dialect of Tamambo spoken on the eastern half of the island is now almost extinct, the main phonetic differences from the western dialect being the lack of prenasalized stops and labialized consonants, and the short articulation of vowels. Previous phonetic work on Tamambo is limited to a descriptive grammar of the language (Jauncey 1997).

Abstract:

Many studies have focused on substrate influence on the creole languages of Melanesia – Tok Pisin, Solomons Pijin and Bislama. The same cannot be said with regard to influence in the opposite direction: contact-induced change occurring in local vernaculars due to pressure from the creole. This paper presents a case study of several instances of structural borrowing and semantic category change in Paluai, an Oceanic language spoken in Papua New Guinea. It is shown that a number of functional elements originating from Tok Pisin are now firmly embedded in Paluai grammar: two verbs, gat and inap, and a conjunction, taim. Moreover, semantic categories are undergoing change and possibly attrition due to many-to-one correspondences. This suggests that it is important to view language contact situations as dynamic and involving two-way processes of change.

Abstract:

Mavea is spoken on the eponymous island, Mavea, a satellite island off the east coast of Espiritu Santo Island, northern Vanuatu. The language is highly endangered. There are about 34 fluent speakers on Mavea Island (aged 30 and older), out of a total island population of around 210. There are at least another 30 Mavea speakers who have left the island permanently. These speakers now live throughout Vanuatu, mainly on Espiritu Santo Island (in the villages of Deproma and Matevulu), Aore Island, and in Port Vila, the capital city of Vanuatu. All Mavea speakers are bilingual in Bislama, one of the official languages of Vanuatu.

Abstract:

This article shows how the psycholinguistic process of language transfer accounts for the many features of the grammatical morphology of language contact varieties that differ from those of their lexifiers. These include different grammatical categories, the use of contrasting morphological processes to express grammatical distinctions, lexifier grammatical morphemes with new functions, and new grammatical morphemes not found in the lexifier. After an introductory description of the general notion of language transfer, it presents five more specific types: transfer of morphological strategies, word order and grammatical categories, as well as direct morphological transfer and functional transfer. The article then gives some possible explanations for the distribution among different types of contact varieties of two kinds of functional transfer – functionalisation and refunctionalisation – and for the distribution of particular types of grammatical morphemes – i.e. free versus bound. The examples presented come from contact languages of the Australia-Pacific region: three creoles (Australian Kriol, Hawai‘i Creole and Tayo); an expanded pidgin (Melanesian Pidgin, exemplified by Vanuatu Bislama and Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin); a restricted pidgin (Nauru Pidgin); and an indigenised variety of English (Colloquial Singapore English).

Abstract:

Between November 2018 and 2020, residents of New Caledonia will have three opportunities to vote on whether to become an independent state. Residents of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will vote on the same issue in June 2019. Should the residents of either territory vote for independence, the issue of whether a language shall be designated the national and / or official language for the new state will arise. If the decision is to designate a language for the new state, the choice of which language will also surface. This chapter considers the language choices made by a number of countries across the linguistically diverse Asia Pacific region post-independence and in so doing, provides some models for the language configurations which may eventuate should either territory become independent. The linguistic configurations discussed here are divided into Category 1 - countries where a national and / or official language are legally specified or have de jure legal status. - and Category 2 – countries where no language is legally named but at least one language may be de facto national or official. Examples of Category 1 countries include Indonesia where Bahasa Indonesia is the only de jure national and official language and Vanuatu where Bislama is the de jure national language and is also a de jure co-official language with both English and French, the languages of the former colonial powers. Examples of Category 2 countries discussed here include Papua New Guinea where Tok Pisin is named as one of the possible languages needed for an applicant to become a Papua New Guinean citizen but does not have de jure national language status and the Solomon Islands where Pijin is the de facto national language and English is the de facto official language. Whilst the results of either the Bougainville and New Caledonian referenda are not clear, the different configurations already in place serve as a pointer to what may eventuate should the residents of either territory vote for independence.

Abstract Despite the stated importance of fieldwork within the discipline of Linguistics, and the existence of several texts about fieldwork (Thieberger, 2012; Bowren, 2008; Newman & Ratliff, 2001), there is very little literature concerning the experience of fieldwork from tertiary students’ perspectives (see Macaulay, 2012). In this article, the work of four New Zealand postgraduate linguistics students working with fourteen Vanuatu teachers to translate reading materials written in Bislama into seven vernacular languages is documented. Findings indicate that students were motivated to be involved in the fieldwork by a range of factors including travel, altruism, and commitment to the communities and their languages; they drew on and, in some cases, clarified many concepts from their undergraduate studies; and that the fieldwork experiences both allowed them to gain confidence in their linguistic skills and influenced their future studies in linguistics.

Innerhalb der Ingenieurwissenschaften bestehen spezifische kommunikative Anforderungen, deren Auswirkungen auf die formalsprachliche Realisierung bislang nur qualitativ-exemplarisch oder quantitativ anhand kleinerer Datensätze untersucht wurden. Der vorliegende Beitrag unternimmt einen Schritt in Richtung einer quantitativ gesicherten Beschreibung semantischer Marker in ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Texten, die auch Rückschlüsse auf das zugrundeliegende semantisch-funktionale Profil erlaubt. Im Zentrum stehen maschinell erfassbare Ausdrücke, die bestimmte semantische Relationen encodieren; um jedoch auch Spezifika ingenieurwissenschaftlicher Fachsprache jenseits der lexikalischen Ebene erfassen zu können, werden diese Einheiten hier nicht isoliert betrachtet, sondern in ihrer syntaktisch-musterhaften Einbettung im Kontext analysiert. Merkmale, die sich in der Betrachtung unseres eigenen Korpus als salient herausstellen und auf mögliche Spezifika ingenieurwissenschaftlicher Fachsprache hindeuten, werden in einem weiteren Schritt punktuell mit weiteren (wissenschaftlichen und nicht-wissenschaftlichen) Korpora abgeglichen, um sie von Charakteristika anderer Wissenschaftstexte abgrenzen zu können.

Jahrhundert entstandene,1 anonym,2 unikal und fragmentarisch überlieferte ,Minne- und Aventiureroman‘ Reinfried von Braunschweig besitzt aufgrund seiner thematischen wie motivischen Fülle und erzählerischen Raffinesse großes Potential für die mediävistische Forschung und die akademische Lehre. Doch bislang ist ihm nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit in der Forschung zuteil geworden und in den universitären Vorlesungsverzeichnissen ist er selten zu finden. Das liegt weniger an dem mittlerweile überwundenen Blüte-Verfall-Modell von Literatur, das noch die Zurückhaltung der MediävistInnen bis ins 20. Jahrhundert erklärt, als an der unbefriedigenden editorischen Aufarbeitung.

Die Nutzung von und die Kommunikation mit sozialen Medien basiert auf dem Austausch persönlicher Daten. Dabei können Privatheitsrisiken entstehen, vor denen man sich oft nur schwer schützen kann. Damit Menschen Online-Angebote selbstbestimmt nutzen können, ist ein gewisser Schutz ihrer Daten erforderlich. Immer häufiger wird die Online-Privatheitskompetenz als Voraussetzung dafür angesehen. Kritisch hinterfragt wird jedoch, ob Wissen über Online-Privatheit tatsächlich zu aktivem Datenschutz führt. Die Kausalität zwischen Online-Privatheitskompetenz und Datenschutz blieb bislang unerforscht: Schützen Menschen mit hoher Online-Privatheitskompetenz ihre Daten besser? Oder ist es umgekehrt, und Datenschutzverhalten macht Internetnutzende kompetenter? Mit einer Längsschnittstudie haben wir die Wechselwirkung zwischen Online-Privatheitskompetenz und der Umsetzung von Datenschutz von N = 898 Internetnutzenden untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Menschen mit höherer Online-Privatheitskompetenz über die Zeit ihre Daten etwas aktiver schützen. Umgekehrt hat Datenschutzverhalten jedoch keinen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Online-Privatheitskompetenz.

The identity of the Early High German author Johannes Hartlieb, who had been working as a court physician in Munich since 1441, with a pleban of the same name who was installed in Ingolstadt in 1436/37, was repeatedly called into question. The comparison of a letter of this pleban with autograph documents of the Munich court physician confirms now that both are the same person. Die Lebensstationen des frühneuhochdeutschen Autors Johannes Hartlieb vor dessen Zeit als Münchener Hofarzt (1441–1468) waren in der Forschung bislang umstritten. Durch den Schriftvergleich eines Briefes des 1436–1437 belegten Ingolstätter Plebans Johannes Hartlieb mit den autographen Dokumenten des Münchener Hofarztes, kann nun gezeigt werden, dass es sich bei beiden um dieselbe Person handeln.

Gegenüber strategischen Kommunikatoren im Allgemeinen sowie gegenüber Pressesprecherinnen und Werbern im Konkreten werden seit jeher vielfältige Vorbehalte geäußert: Sie täuschen, langweilen und seien überflüssig. In der Forschung wurden die Vorbehalte bislang allenfalls als singuläres und peripheres Problem begriffen. Dadurch aber geraten sowohl die sozialen Prozesse hinter den Diffamierungen als auch die Praktiken von Pressesprecherinnen und Werbern beim Umgang mit diesen Vorbehalten aus dem Blick. Der Beitrag setzt daher grundlegender an: Wenn Merkmale einer Gruppe weithin als abweichend bzw. unerwünscht etikettiert werden, ist die Gruppe stigmatisiert. Das Stigma-Konzept von Erving Goffman ermöglicht eine soziologische Analyse der Entstehungsprozesse sowie der Wirkungen und bietet damit einen theoretischen Rahmen, um die Forschungsfragen zu beantworten. Als das diskreditierende Merkmal von Pressesprecherinnen und Werbern wird in dem Beitrag ihr strategisches Handeln und damit der persuasive und instrumentelle Charakter erkannt. Die stigmatisierende Wirkung entfaltet sich erst durch negative Zuschreibungen, wie dem Täuschungsvorwurf sowie mitunter der fehlenden Relevanz und fehlenden Unterhaltsamkeit. Zudem wird herausgearbeitet, wie Pressesprecherinnen und Werber im Rahmen des Stigmamanagements mit dem Stigma umgehen.

Abstract Der Begriff Langgedicht ist gebräuchlich geworden: Autoren und Verlage, Kritiker und Literaturwissenschaftler nutzen ihn heutzutage nahezu selbstverständlich. Gattungstheoretischer Konsens herrscht über das Langgedicht jedoch nicht, eine allgemeingültige und bindende Definition steht aus. Ein Blick auf die Debatte, die Walter Höllerer 1965 mit seinen Thesen zum langen Gedicht lostrat, soll die Schwierigkeiten, die mit jeder diesbezüglichen Definitionsbestrebung einhergehen, veranschaulichen – und auf eine Gedichtform und ihre Theoriebildung hinweisen, die bislang kaum erforscht worden ist.The term Langgedicht has by now become common in Germany’s literary scene: authors and publishers, critics and researchers use it on a regular basis. From the perspective of genre theory, however, there is no consensus on what a Langgedicht actually is or might be. A general definition has yet to be established. The difficulties in elaborating a binding definition are illustrated by a closer look on the debate triggered by Walter Höllerer’s Thesen zum langen Gedicht of 1965. The reconstruction of the debate shall also help to popularize this form of poetry and its theory formation.

Abstract Literaturgeschichtsschreibung als grundlegendes Arbeitsgebiet der Literaturwissenschaft wird von Zeit zu Zeit gerne in Frage gestellt, und dies vehement. Es ist dann oft sogar von der prinzipiellen Unmöglichkeit die Rede, sich Texten auf eine solche Weise überhaupt nähern zu können. Trotz vieler Abgesänge erfreut sich diese Disziplin aber in allen literaturwissenschaftlichen Praxis höchster Aktualität, und es hatte auch nie den Anschein, dass Literaturwissenschaftler wirklich darauf verzichten wollten oder zumindest ein Konzept herbeisehnten, das sich radikal von allen bekannten unterschiede.1 Und auch die bislang zum Glück wenig erfolgreichen Versuche, Literaturwissenschaft auf cultural studies auszurichten, konnte an deren Nützlichkeit wenig ändern. Dass es sich um eine Gattung handelt, die ihre eigene Geschichtlichkeit niemals aus den Augen verlieren durfte und letztlich in jeder Generation neu zu formulieren war, gehörte zum Grundkonsens, neben dem es dann aber sehr unterschiedliche Weisen gab und gibt, Literaturgeschichtsschreibung zu betreiben. Deren Defizite und Vorteile jenseits der Theorie auszuloten und in Praxis umzuwandeln ist seit jeher Maßstab für Gelingen oder Scheitern eines derartigen Unternehmens. Eine Literaturgeschichte auf eine Theorie oder eine Methode ausrichten zu wollen, wie verschiedentlich versucht wurde, sie gar an turns zu binden, scheint wenig erfolgversprechend zu sein. Bereits zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts beschrieben die Ausdruckspsychologen sowohl einen spezifischen Gesichtsausdruck als auch eine besondere Lautbildung, die nur dem Lachen der Schadenfreude zu eigen sein sollte. Leider wurden diese Ideen bislang nur unzureichend durch gezielte Untersuchungen weiterverfolgt. Vorarbeiten zur vorliegenden Studie, in denen die Häufigkeit und Intensität von Lächeln und Lachen in 16 positiven Emotionen untersucht wurden, zeigten, dass nicht nur Erheiterung systematisch mit Lachen und intensiveren mimischen Reaktionen einhergeht, sondern auch Schadenfreude. Aufbauend auf diesen Ergebnissen testete die vorliegende Studie drei Hypothesen zum mimischen Ausdruck von Schadenfreude in 17 erinnerten Schadenfreude-Erlebnissen. Die Resultate zeigen, dass Schadenfreude sehr oft mit Lachen einherging (in 70 % der Schadenfreude-Erlebnisse) und darüber hinaus die mimischen Ausdrücke oft durch Marker der Regulierung/Dämpfung des Ausdruckes gekennzeichnet waren. Während Schadenfreude also durch den für Freude typischen Gesichtsausdruck gezeigt wird (Duchenne-Display), findet im sozialen Kontext oft eine sichtbare Abschwächung (Regulation) oder ein Verbergen des Ausdrucks statt. Dies ist womöglich darauf zurückzuführen, dass es sozial nicht akzeptabel ist, über den Schaden anderer öffentlich zu lachen.

This article details the controversy between the Austrian Bible Translator, currently the object of much close academic study, and unknown opponents, presumably theologians, around the former's use of sources from the Biblical apocrypha as a gloss to his gospel harmony; in so doing, it draws on the Translator's apologia, composed in Latin, which has received little attention from research to date. Part I of the article consists of an exemplary analysis of the Translator's borrowings from the German 'Kindheit Jesu', indexed with its underlying Latin documents; this text supplements Luke's narrative of the nativity with an alleged first miracle of Jesus, the healing of a midwife called to his birth by Joseph. Part II retraces the drawn-out historical process by which apocryphal additions found themselves successively eliminated from the manifold spectrum of vernacular Biblical writings, a process which did not result in effective synonymity between the German lay term 'Bible' and the canonical concept of the 'Holy Scripture' until, at the earliest, the end of the 15th century. Ausgehend von seiner bislang weitgehend vernachlässigten lat. Verteidigungsschrift skizziert der Beitrag die Kontroverse, die der momentan intensiv erforschte Österreichische Bibelübersetzer mit unbekannten, wohl theologischen Kontrahenten über die Nutzung apokrypher Quellen zur Glossierung seiner Evangelienharmonie austrug. In this article we will try to clarify the expression binna skelde (literally ‘within the shield’ or ‘within the debt’), which features in Old Frisian juridical language, and which has not yet received a satisfactory explanation. We arrive at the following results. Firstly, the (inflected) form skelde undoubtedly means ‘shield’. Secondly, the context of most of the relevant passages—some being unclear—proves that the expression belongs to the field of Frisian feud terminology, which has its own specific characteristics. Finally, the data suggest that the best way to paraphrase binna skelde is ‘under the liability of the feud leader(s)’ or, alternatively ‘under his (or: their) liability as (a) feud leader(s)’. In diesem Aufsatz wird der Versuch gewagt, einen bislang nicht befriedigend gedeuteten Begriff der altfriesischen Rechtssprache, und zwar die Wendung binna skelde (wortwörtlich ‚innerhalb des Schildes‘ oder ‚innerhalb der Schuld‘), zu klären. Es lässt sich Folgendes feststellen. Erstens ist mit skelde (flektierte Form) zweifelsohne ‚Schild‘ gemeint. Weiterhin lässt sich aus dem Kontext der meisten der vorhandenen Belegstellen – die übrigen sind unklar – schließen, dass der Ausdruck der teilweise ganz eigenständigen friesischen Fehdeterminologie zuzuordnen ist. The acquisition of reading competencies as a significant cultural skill in our society is initiated early on and supported by a child’s interaction with its social surroundings. The family, as probably the most important agent of socialization, decisively affects children and their competencies. However, which forms of activities are meaningful for the development of precursors to reading, known as emergent literacy, has rarely been investigated in Germany yet. Therefore, the present paper explores the importance of different facets of the home learning environment on children’s emergent literacy, using data of 554 children, age 3 to 4 years, from the longitudinal study BiKS-3-10. Three dimensions of the home learning environment are distinguished: quality of interaction, formal instruction in literacy, and exposure to books. Through path modeling the associations between these dimensions of the home learning environment were analyzed, controlling for children’s level of competencies at the beginning of the study and family background variables (socioeconomic status and parental native language), and emergent literacy (vocabulary, grammar, content knowledge, knowledge of letters). Results show that specific dimensions of the home learning environment are associated with specific facets of emergent literacy. The findings are discussed with regard to theoretical and practical implications. Zusammenfassung Der Erwerb von Lesen, als eine der zentralen Kulturtechniken unserer Gesellschaft, wird bereits früh angebahnt und durch die sozialen Interaktionen des Kindes mit seiner Umwelt gefördert. Als bedeutsamste Umwelt kann wohl die Familie angesehen werden, welche als erste Sozialisationsinstanz die Kinder entscheidend prägt. Doch welche Praktiken genau für die verschiedenen Vorläufer des Lesens von Bedeutung sind, ist bislang, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Raum, recht wenig erforscht. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird im vorliegenden Beitrag die Bedeutsamkeit unterschiedlicher Facetten der familiären Anregung bei 554 Kindern der Längsschnittstudie BiKS-3-10 im Alter von ca. 3-4 Jahren für verschiedene Kompetenzen, die als Vorläufer des Lesens gelten können, untersucht. Es werden drei Dimensionen der familiären Lernumwelt unterschieden: Qualität der Interaktion, formelle Instruktion in Schriftsprache und Erfahrungen mit Büchern. Mit Hilfe eines Pfadmodells wird der Zusammenhang zwischen diesen verschiedenen Dimensionen der familiären Lernumwelt, unter Kontrolle des Ausgangsniveaus kindlicher Kompetenzen und familiärer Hintergrundvariablen (sozioökonomischer Status und sprachlicher Hintergrund), mit schriftsprachlichen Vorläuferfähigkeiten (Wortschatz, Grammatik, inhaltliches Wissen und Buchstabenkenntnis) analysiert. ZusammenfassungSeit über einem Jahrhundert wird das Altkornische Vocabularium als kornische Version von Ælfrics Glossar anerkannt, bei dem die altenglischen Übersetzungen der lateinischen Lemmata durch kornische ersetzt sind. Diese Auffassung wird hier gegen einen neueren Vorschlag, das Vocabularium als ‚multilingualen Text‘ zu betrachten, verteidigt, indem die bislang vorgebrachten Argumente erneut überprüft werden. Allerdings ist das traditionelle Datum von c. 1100 für die Abfassung wahrscheinlich zu früh: hier wird versuchsweise das mittlere oder spätere 12. Jahrhundert vorgeschlagen. Ein besonders einschlägiges Argument für die Datierung ist der Lautstand des Vokabulars, v. a. die Assibilierung der dentalen Verschlußlaute.

AbstractDie Historische Soziolinguistik hat sich in den letzten 25 Jahren zu einer zentralen Teildisziplin der sprachhistorischen Forschung entwickelt, von der auch wichtige Impulse für die Linguistik der Gegenwartssprache ausgehen. Dennoch sind bislang nur wenige Versuche unternommen worden, den zahlreichen Forschungsansätzen ein gemeinsames Forum zu geben, das einen intensiven Austausch über Theorien und Methoden der Disziplin, aber auch über forschungspraktische Fragen ermöglichen würde. Im vergangenen Jahr wurde auf der Konferenz „Language History from Below“ in Bristol das „Historical Sociolinguistics Network“ (HiSoN) gegründet. HiSoN besteht zur Zeit aus über 100 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus unterschiedlichen Philologien.

ZusammenfassungUm seine verlorene Braut Rhiannon zurück zu gewinnen, muss Pwyll im ersten Zweig des Mabinogi seinen Gegner überwältigen. Dies geschieht in einer märchenhaften Episode mit Hilfe eines Sacks oder Beutels, der sich auf magische Weise nie füllen lässt, bis Pwylls Gegner selbst sich in den Sack begibt. Auf diese Weise - so sagt der Erzähler - wird zum ersten Mal ein Spiel namens ‚Dachs im Sack‘ (oder ‚Dachs im Beutel‘) gespielt. Diese Benennung lenkt allerdings davon ab, was eigentlich gemeint ist. Ein Dachs spielt in dieser Geschichte keine Rolle, und worum es wirklich geht, ist das Konzept ‚jemanden im Sack haben‘ oder ‚jemanden in den Sack stecken‘. Vergleichbare Ausdrücke sind schon im Mittelalter in mehreren Sprachen bekannt und verweisen möglicherweise auf eine wirkliche Art von Zweikampf. Die entsprechende Erwähnung in dieser walisischen Geschichte scheint der bislang älteste Beleg für diesen Ausdruck zu sein.

ZusammenfassungSowohl in der Wirtschaft als auch in der Wissenschaft spielen Projekte und Projektmanagement eine zunehmende Rolle. Projekte beeinflussen immer häufiger die Arbeitsstrukturen in Organisationen und wissenschaftlichen Instituten. Sie ermöglichen dynamisches, flexibles und vernetztes arbeiten, was in der heutigen Welt gefragt ist. Projektbasierte Arbeit bringt jedoch auch unterschiedliche Herausforderungen mit sich. Besonders im Falle von komplexen Projektkonstellationen, an denen Spezialisten aus verschiedenen Fachrichtungen und Ländern beteiligt sind, können strukturelle, sprachliche und kulturelle Hürden sehr groß sein. Der Artikel stellt theoretische Überlegungen zu der von der Forschung bislang vernachlässigten Beziehungsebene in der interkulturellen Projektkommunikation an und analysiert die Rolle von Asymmetrien für die projektinterne Kommunikation anhand von E-Mail-Interaktionen aus Wissenschafts- und Wirtschaftsprojekten.

AbstractDie Protestbewegung der 1960er und 1970er Jahre werden nicht mehr allein in Erinnerungsliteratur und Feuilletons aufgearbeitet, sondern sind im vergangenen Jahrzehnt auch zum Gegenstand der historischen Wissenschaften geworden. Dies zeigt sich an der gewachsenen Zahl von Neuerscheinungen und Tagungen zum Thema. Dabei ist bemerkenswert, dass die Geschichtsschreibung von ehemaligen Aktivisten und Betroffenen immer mehr auf Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler übergeht, die keine Zeitzeugen waren. Von diesem Generationenwechsel ist ein neuer Blick auf diese sozialen Bewegungen zu erwarten. So arbeiten gegenwärtig zahlreiche Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und –wissenschaftler aus Linguistik, Geschichtswissenschaft, Politologie, Soziologie und Literaturwissenschaft an Forschungsprojekten, die bislang vernachlässigte Aspekte der 1960er Jahre in den Blick nehmen. Das „Interdisziplinäre Forschungskolloquium Protestbewegungen“ bietet Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und –wissenschaftlern ein Forum, in dem sie neue Zugänge zur Historisierung und wissenschaftlichen Behandlung der Studentenbewegung diskutieren können.
