Abstract:
A disabling condition in old age is poor cognitive function (CF), which affects more than 16 million people in the United States. Research has correlated oxidative stress with poor CF, and antioxidants have been suggested as a means to counteract this impact, although there are inconsistencies in the literature. Guided by the oxidative stress theory of aging, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between blood serum antioxidant levels and CF in participants aged 60 and older. This cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey fr

Abstract:
In an attempt to find out whether decreased blood sugar level is associated with impaired cognitive function, adverse emotional changes, or somatic symptoms, 36 subjects who believed or suspected that they had hypoglycemia were given 5-hour glucose tolerance tests (GTTs). After each of the nine blood samples taken during the GTT, the subject's mood, performance on the Serial Sevens Test (SST), and somatic symptom reports were recorded. The subjects reported significantly more negative affect after glucose nadir (the lowest level of blood sugar reached) than before nadir, and endorsed more soma

McLaren, Andrew. "Heart rate and blood pressure variability : association with white matter lesions and cognitive function following stroke." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/965.

Full text
Abstract:
Dementia presents a significant health care burden. Older post-stroke patients suffer high rates of dementia. Subcortical ischaemia may be an important mechanism of cognitive decline, particularly in older patients with cerebrovascular disease. It is hypothesised that abnormal heart rate and blood pressure variability will increase white matter lesion volume through hypoperfusion. This may lead to a subcortical pattern of cognitive decline characterised for example by deficits in attention and concentration. Stroke patients aged > 75 years and free of dementia had a series of cardiovascular au

Abstract:
The microbial populations in the gastrointestinal tracts of poultry play an important role in normal digestive processes and in maintaining animal health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics on the growth parameters, gut ecosystem, histology and immune function. In this study, four experiments one in vitro and three in vivo were conducted using specific pathogen free (SPF) and Hubbard broiler chickens. The first experiment was designed to determine the influence of inulin as an effective prebiotic on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains,

There are many studies conducted on cognitive performance and of different aspects that can affect the performance. However, the literature review reveal that there is a knowledge gap in the area of measurements for bicycle stability and in how bicycle stability is affected during acute alcohol intoxication. The aim of this study is, therefore, to investigate if different group characteristics such as cycling experience, physical activity, sensation-seeking, or previous alcohol habits have an effect on bicycle performance or executive functions during acute alcohol intoxication. Adrenal function, blood metabolites, hematological parameters, growth, and carcass characteristics were compared in tropically-adapted (Brahman,) intermediate (Bonsmara and Bonsmara X Angus crossbred,) and temperate (Angus; n=10 each) beef steers. An adrenal gland challenge was conducted, entailing serial blood collection at 15-min intervals for a 12.5-h period, with administration of exogenous ACTH (0.1 IU/kg BW) 2.5-h into the experiment. Steers were maintained on Coastal bermudagrass pastures overseeded with ryegrass for five month; body weights and blood samples were obtained every 21 days

Abstract:
<p>In addition to the adverse effects of high blood pressure (HBP) on cardiovascular disease, HBP is also associated with increased risk of stroke, dementia, and neurocognitive dysfunction. Although aerobic exercise and dietary modifications have been shown to reduce blood pressure, no studies have examined the effects of a combined aerobic exercise and dietary intervention on neurocognition among individuals with HBP, a group at elevated risk for neurocognitive dysfunction. Abstact: The overall objective of this thesis is to draw attention to discussion as a teaching technique. Discussion can be used to develop pupils' abilities, which are necessary for social life. The question: "How do teachers understand this technique and then apply it?", is closely linked to this problem. It is worth mentioning that discussion has very bad connotations in the Czech society. It is mainly due to its representation in media, where discussion is usually shown as a fight of arguments with an arrogant attitude, unethical and self-centred word-tiffs.
