This study elucidates the use of the precipitation method to enhance the uniformity of oxide additives in boron carbide ceramics. Achieving a homogeneous distribution of additives is critical, as higher additive content tends to degrade the mechanical properties of boron carbide. In this research, yttrium and aluminium hydroxide salts were dispersed and incorporated into boron carbide slurry under highly alkaline conditions. The mixture was aged and subsequently calcined to produce metal oxide layers around the boron carbide particles. The additive-to-boron carbide ratio and calcination condit

Bode and Nyquist plots were plotted for each substrate. The Bode plots point to the possible formation of a double-layered passive film on the surfaces of all the Ti-6Al-4V alloys containing boron after exposure to the solution for times of 28 to 168 h. At exposure times of 28 to 168 h, the Ti-6Al-4V-1.09B alloy did not show noticeable changes in impedance behavior with respect to increased exposure time.

Abstract PWSCC in Alloy 600 and Alloy 182, 132 and 82 weld metals is important because these materials are widely used in the PWR coolant system. Plant experience indicates that PWSCC will steadily increase as plants age without effective mitigation. This study is investigating the mitigation of PWSCC initiation and propagation by adjusting the current operating PWR primary water chemistry, including dissolved hydrogen, lithium and boron concentrations, the pH at temperature, and Zn additions.

Abstract To increase the longevity and to optimize the performance of biomedical implants, a class of β-titanium alloys, specifically Ti-Nb-Zr (TNZ) is being explored. TNZ alloys demonstrate advantageous properties including non-toxicity, biocompatibility and low elastic moduli. Moreover, previous studies have shown that the addition of trace amounts of boron (0.01- 1 wt%) in conventional titanium alloys increases the tensile strength and corrosion resistance of the alloys. The objective of this study was to investigate the corrosion behavior of UNS R58130 (Ti-13Nb-13Zr or Ti1313) as well as T

Abstract High gamma prime Ni-based superalloys comprising ≥3.5 % Al are difficult to weld due to high propensity of these materials to weld solidification, heat affected zone liquation, and stress-strain cracking. In this study the root cause analysis of cracking and overview on the developed weldable Ni-based superalloys for repair of turbine engine components manufactured from equiaxed (EA), directionally solidified (DS), and single crystal (SX) materials as well as for 3D AM is provided. It is shown that the problem with the solidification and HAZ liquation cracking of turbine engine compon

A 24-inch-diameter x 0.75-inch-wall X70 low-carbon bainitic-steel pipe was evaluated to obtain an independent measurement of pipe properties and to examine metallurgical characteristics that may affect behavior in gas-transmission service. The steel from which the pipe was produced was processed using advanced steelmaking methods to insure cleanliness but apparently was not treated for sulfide shape control since no sour gas exposure in service was anticipated. Primary microalloying additions in this high manganese steel, other than columbium, were titanium and boron. Titanium was added to for

Electrochemical disinfection has gained interest as an alternative to conventional wastewater treatment because of its high effectiveness and environmental compatibility. Two and a half billion people currently live without improved sanitation facilities. Our research efforts are focused on developing and implementing a freestanding, additive-free toilet system that treats and recycles blackwater on site. In this study, we sought to apply electrochemical disinfection to blackwater. We compared commercially available boron-doped diamond (BDD) and mixed metal oxide (MMO) electrodes for disinfect

Standard salinity management theory, derived from blending thermodynamic and semi- empirical considerations leads to an erroneous perception regarding compensative interaction among salinity stress factors. The current approach treats matric and osmotic components of soil water potential separately and then combines their effects to compute overall response. With deficit water a severe yield decrease is expected under high salinity, yet little or no reduction is predicted for excess irrigation, irrespective of salinity level. Similarly, considerations of competition between chloride and nitrat
