Abstract:
The Bosnian Muslims have only fairly recently become internationally identified as a national group. As a matter of fact, Bosnia and Herzegovina itself has had until lately a low recognition value to most people not living in southeastern Europe. Indeed, to many it has become a shock to discover that a fairly large group of Muslims resides in the middle of Europe, not to mention that they have become the object of ethnonationalistic violence at the end of the twentieth century. A further seeming incongruity in the international arena is the claim by many Bosnian Muslims that they should not be

Political thought in Bosnia and Herzegovina during Austro-Hungarian rule can be researched by a thorough analysis of the engagement of local political elites with pressing contemporary issues. There were four distinct political clusters in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time: the Bosniak Muslim, Serbian, and Croatian ones were crystallized around an ethnoreligious principle; while Social Democrats as a coherent group were based on the principle of civic and working class identity, and were consequently indifferent towards ethnicity and religion. The aim of this contribution is to examine the meaning of the word musliman or German Muslim and to answer the question whether the meaning of this word in a dictionary can be mapped by means of classical distributional analysis, and whether further meanings can be captured by this method. In addition, a simple method for a distributional semantic analysis is presented. The basis of the investigation is the assumption common in corpus–based semantics and lexicography that the meaning of words can be interpreted from the context and thus polysemy and synonymy can be recognized. Despite the distinction, the issue of ‘Refugees and religion’ and the issue of ‘Migration and religion’ will overlap. The Bosnian war was not a purely “ethnic conflict,” as both in-group members and out-group members were sacrificed for the higher political objective, namely, ethnic homogenization of divided Bosnian territories. The process of resettlement of the ethnic kin was just as important as the expulsion of the ethnic “other” for re-creating a new ethnic and political balance in select strategic areas.
