Chan, Catherine. The Macanese Diaspora in British Hong Kong. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729253.

Full text
Abstract:
Diaspora transformed the urban terrain of colonial societies, creating polyglot worlds out of neighborhoods, workplaces, recreational clubs and public spheres. It was within these spaces that communities reimagined and reshaped their public identities vis-à-vis emerging government policies and perceptions from other communities. Through a century of Macanese activities in British Hong Kong, this book explores how mixed-race diasporic communities survived within unequal, racialized and biased systems beyond the colonizer-colonized dichotomy. Originating from Portuguese Macau yet living outside the control of the empire, the Macanese freely associated with more than one identity and pledged allegiance to multiple communal, political and civic affiliations. They drew on colorful imaginations of the Portuguese and British empires in responding to a spectrum of changes encompassing Macau’s woes, Hong Kong’s injustice, Portugal’s political transitions, global developments in print culture and the rise of new nationalisms during the inter-war period.

Abstract:
How can one aspire to reveal the intricacies and peculiarities of a literary work without imposing his/her own interpretation as the only valid one or obscuring the intended message, if there is one? Then of course, I wrote a book on violence, trauma and identity issues, something which felt baffling at times and I faced challenges of all kinds. My purpose here is not to solve this old-age problem. I can only suggest ways of averting this danger, such us my taking into account various theories when doing research on a topic, always questioning my judgments and taking care to throw light over a subject and not obfuscate it. Literary criticism can feel sometimes like a Procrustean bed but there is nothing that a genuine passion for this field cannot solve(...) The author

Keller, Daniela, and Ina Habermann. Brexit and Beyond: Nation and Identity. Gunter Narr Verlag, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.24053/9783823394143.

Abstract:
This volume explores the cultural significance of Brexit, situating it in debates about nation and identity. Contributors to this collection seek to contextualise Britain’s decision to leave the EU and to assess its reverberations in language, literature and culture. Addressing such aspects as British exceptionalism, myth making, medievalism and nostalgia, contributions range from travelogues, ladybird books and rural cinema going to ageing. An important focus lies on marginalised groups and geographical fringes as contributors attend to the Irish situation and the “dearth of literary representation of EU migrants” (Berberich). Finally, two essays widen the perspective to assess American parallels to the discourses about a Brexit that is still far from “done.”
