The aim of this work was to use simulation as a tool to better understand areas of orthokinetic (shear-induced) aggregation which are still not well understood. These areas include aggregate structure, aggregate strength, breakup and restructuring and combined perikinetic/orthokinetic aggregation. Previous simulation studies were reviewed and it was concluded that the methodology of Chen and Doi (1989) was an appropriate starting point for this study. The modified simulation was validated by comparison with theoretical and experimental results. Orthokinetic aggregates were found to have a fr

The effects of maximum size coarse aggregate on the relationship between accelerated strength and 14-day normally cured strength of normal and superplasticized concrete have been investigated. Among the various sizes of aggregates investigated, one-half inch maximum size of coarse aggregate exhibited higher strength producing properties. Congenital microcephaly (conMiC) is a manifestation of severely disrupted prenatal brain development, caused by genetic defects, toxins, severe maternal malnutrition, or infection. The Zika virus outbreak and the devastating impact of Zika infection on the fetal brain have focused much attention on the cellular and molecular pathophysiology of conMiC. Mendelian conMiC disorders offer a unique opportunity for understanding gene and protein networks that direct cellular processes essential for prenatal brain development. Fractures and fracture networks govern the mechanical and fluid flow behavior of rock masses. Tunneling and other rock mechanics applications therefore require the characterization of rock fractures based on geological data. Field investigations produce only a limited amount of data from boreholes, outcrops, cut slopes, and geophysical surveys. In tunneling, the process of excavation creates a priceless opportunity to gather more data during construction. Typically, however, these data are not utilized due to the impedance of sampling and analysis on the flow of construction, and safety concer

The damages on building structures are typically grouped into three main categories: exterior, interior, and contents damage. The consolidation and reinstatement of the existing urban fabric has become the normative view of place-making, and this exacerbates a view of place-thinking as “reactionary.” But if, as
