Abstract:
Milky mushroom (Calocybe indica P&C) is a tropical potentially new species gaining popularity and demand by the mushroom growers especially in South India. As biochemical composition of milky mushrooms are influenced by the growing environmental conditions, research pertaining to these aspects is very meagre and also to compare the nutritional and biochemical composition of three milky mushroom species so that the best species can be selected by the growers, hence the present research work has been taken up to estimate the concentration of proteins, carbohydrates and phytochemical compounds

Calocybe indica known as a milky white, indigenous and medicinally important edible mushroom. The cultural conditions, molecular identification, and phylogenetic relationships of selected strains of Calocybe indica were examined. The optimal temperature for mycelial development was found to be 30°C, whereas the lowest growth occurred at 15°C. The most favorable growth occurs at a pH of 5. Based on the growth characteristics of various culture media, potato dextrose agar proved to be the most advantageous, while Hennerberg and Czapek Dox media were less suitable. Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of Calocybe indica extract (CIE) in alleviating liver and kidney toxicity caused by cadmium chloride (CdCl₂) in rats. Methods: Six groups of five rats each were used in this study. Group A was the control while groups B to F received 3 mg/kg CdCl2 subcutaneously. Group B was induced with CdCl2 alone for 21 days. Orally, 100 mg/kg of vitamin C, and 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg of CIE were used to treat groups C, D, E, and F respectively. Mushrooms are fleshy or macro fungi, belong to a special group in biological science, the Mycota and their descriptive science is called Mycology. Mushrooms have considerable interest in the most important civilizations in history because of their sensory characteristics. They have been recognized for their attractive culinary attributes. Presently mushrooms are common valuable foods because they have low calories, carbohydrates, fat, and sodium and are cholesterol-less vegetables. Besides, mushrooms have important nutrients, and are rich in selenium, potassium, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin D,
